Low Blood Sugar 3 times this week

I am going thru the same thing. I was off my diabetes meds before surgery due to the preop diet. I noticed it two weeks ago when I almost passed out in my water arobics class. My A1C is very low compared to my last one so they think its been going on for a couple of months. After tracking I have noticed that I start getting symptoms under a reading of 80: headache is number one, weakness, shaky, anxious, light headed, dizziness and the urge to just eat and eat. Now that I know the symptoms I realize that it was happening a lot but didn't put it all together. When I get under 60 I get confused, disoriented and feel like I am going to pass out. I have to test my sugar constantly to stay on top of it. I have added more fiber to my diet and have been eatting more complex carbs and it seems to be a little better but still happens. I am having to eat three meals and three snacks a day and sometimes eatting doesn't bring it back up and I have to use the glucose tablets. After an ER trip, talking with my bariatric surgeons office multiple times they r calling it delayed or late dumping syndrome. I have a scope scheduled on the 16th to look at the opening to the small intestines. If the food is falling out to quickly because the opening is to big it hits the small intestine then the pancreas releases insulin which drops the blood sugar. I am hoping the opening is fine and it's just my body adjusting to losing 80 pounds in 4 months because this would be my 2nd revision surgery.. I had a stricture at 7 weeks out that they perforated trying to dialate it open. I could possibly have the complete opposite problem now. But it is all still worth it and I would do it all again if I had to.
  3. Hello! I have reached my weight loss goal and will be having surgery next month to remove excess skin, tummy tuck and breast implants. At the same time, I have asked my Lap Band surgeon to do a port revision because the one I have now is a bit bothersome in some clothing (ie - tights, nylons, some tighter waistband pants/skirts). He's agreed but I'm wondering about any insurance coverage issues. The pain is really not a concern, since I'm going to be pretty miserable from everything else - what's a little bit more? lol Anyway, has anyone had experience with BC/BS PPO with regard to coverage on the low profile port placement? Thanks!
  4. I cannot remember how many times I saw my surgeon but I will be having a revision, and am switching from another surgeon that I was originally going to have my DS with. With the new doctor, I went to a group seminar first, and then will see him for a consult in two weeks. I have all my medical information, and did all my testing (the testing required from previous doctor,) I just need to see the nutritionist, and psych which I will do all the same day. So the only things I need to do next is do any extra things that he might need which I'm not sure what that will be. So far I've done my endoscopy, upper gi, blood test about two months ago, my cardiac function, and pulmonary test, as well as my PFT. Any additional information would be appreciated.
  5. Hello! I am a newbie to vertical sleeve talk. I was banded in August 2009. I lost 76 pounds and have been having problems with my band. I can't eat healty food, can never get fills right, food is always stuck and I very bad heart burn daily and at night it is worst. I and waiting now for insurance approval for me to have the sleeve. I have been researching the sleeve and have heard nothing but great things. I feel that I can get the rest of my weight off with the sleeve and enjoy life with it. I really need feedback on how the revision was. Thanks,
  6. Just wondering if some of you were approved with BCBS Federal? I was denied and I'm appealing. BCBS FED would not tell me the reason why it was denied they only said, the claim did not meet the criteria. That is all they could tell me over the phone. They said I would have to request this in writing. I am appealing this and asking in writting what was the reason it was not approved. I'm also requesting for a Bariatric Surgeon to be one of the consultants in the Appeal and Grievance Board. The band did not work for me at all. I was always starving. I hated it. I lost 17 lbs and then gained it all back and then some. Has anyone been approved for your revision from band to sleeve with BCBS Federal? Thanks. Thanks.
  7. I'm in a bind myself. I have United healthcare, and had no problem getting my surgery paid for in 9/07 since I was morbidly obese. On 11/5/09, I just had a revision surgery to remove/replace my LAP-BAND® VG to a LAP-BAND® APL... Doc said I was all set. I called and they didn't say I wasn't covered. Today, I just rec'd a letter from UHC saying my surgery is NOT covered. WTF???? I am very upset.. I HAD to have the surgery. It was NOT optional. Their reason was that I was NO lONGER morbidly obese, and therefore was not able to get the surgery! Not too mention, without the surgery, my stomach had prolapsed up over my band, and 1 night I coudn't even swallow my own spit.... Will keep you posted. Brenda
  8. I wanted to get some of y'alls opinions.. I need a revsion due to complications. I saw Dr Kim on Friday and I am honestly not sure what to think ? I liked him . however was not fond of the insurance coordinator . I live in Austin and went with Dr Kim because I heard he's one of the better revision surgeons around. However I left there feeling like my head was spinning and no answers. . They did an upper gi and the lady asked me how in the world I was eating ? I told her not very well .My band has so much damage, scar tissue that liquids barely go through my band .. Doc told me there are ppl with band issues and then there is me ! Mine are bad basically . He told me to come back next week for and egd, they stick a tube down my throat to see if my band d has erroded through my stomach , he suspected it has . Sounds all bad huh ? the problem i had is no one is in a hurry to get it fixed ! The insurance lady is an idiot ! She was basically telling me my insurance most likely won't pay for anything when I know they very well may .. she really made me mad . She had never dealt with my insurance yet was telling me like she knew she didnt even know that PCIP was not through an employer I guess cause its not what I wanted to hear .. anyway I had a sleep study done Friday night to see if I have sleep apnea . So hopefully will know more in the next dayor so ?? he also told me if i dont revise to a sleeve because of my PCOS that with in 2 months of band removal i will gain back the rest of my weight and will contiune to regain about 30% more weight . HE also said due to the PCOS with out a sleeve i will get diebetes with in 5 yrs ! LOVELY ! All in all i was discouraged, Mainly because the insurance lady didntknow what she was talking about and it pissed me off. I just am not sure what to think ??was this y'alls experience ? thanks Mindy

    Revisions?

I also loved my band the 1st 2 yrs. Until the constant barfing caused a slip. Couldn't take the nightime reflux so I got an unfill to try to fix it. Didn't work and the barfing continued even without Fluid in my band. The slip eventually became a herniated. Had a revision 4 mths ago. While im losing slower than I would like, im eating everything I want, just about 6-8 bites of a meal. I've only vomited once (my fault, ate too much) vs almost daily with the band. I've been maintaining 153-155 for 2 mths so I feel that when I finally do get serious about losing the last 23 lbs, I will be easily able to maintain it. And it feels good not to have a port (my "alien") sticking out of my clothes. Altho there is scar tissue where it used to be. No more pain when eating either. The sleeve just prevents u from overeating. Good luck to u

    Revisions?

Sorry about that. I see why people do revisions, many slips.
  12. How long ago was your band removed? I found it very hard to stop gaining weight after removal. I would go for it to help you maintain. You won't lose too much. It's a revision that is why it was approved.

  14. Hi! I have had LapBand since 2007. I lost approx 35 pounds and kept it off. I am having some complications and my surgeon recommends a revision. Has anyone out there revised from Band to RNY? What kind of results did you see? I am leaning towards the Sleeve but I am Diabetic and would like to have that added benefit of not being Diabetic right away. Any feedback is welcome! Thanks
  15. original surgery means it's the only weight loss surgery I've had. A revision surgery means you've already had a weight loss surgery before getting this one. mine was laproscopic. I think endo is a new technique (they didn't do that when I had my surgery five years ago).
  16. oh we can eat - unfortunately!! Mine wasn't a revision - it was an original surgery. I had it because I had GERD prior to surgery - RNY usually improves if not outright cures GERD (did mine!). I lost over 200 lbs - but again, it wasn't a revision.
  17. I am looking to get a revision From the band to the sleeve. I got my band in 2009 and had went from 249 to 145. Had a pretty bad slip in 2016 and the ER doc didn’t know what to do so I had to guide him while take fluid out. He was a bit heavy handed and I think he damaged the port. They can’t refill the band because they think the port has disconnected from the “hose”. I’ve steadily gained and am back up to 220. My doc wants to remove my band and convert to the sleeve We are just now in the starting process and I’ve worried my insurance won’t cover it!! 😞
  18. I saw my sugeon yesterday about this darn band that has never been the same since I unfilled it. He gave me a monster fill and I'm going for a barium swallow. we think there's several possibilities - it might be leaking for starters. Although all through the refill process as I've complained of not having the restriction I think I should have (although I have had restriction, just not what I previously would have had a certain fill levels) when the docs have checked the Fluid, its been there. But this time, I only had 3cc, when we thought I should have 3.4cc. Well, the records say that, verbally the doctor I'd seen said I had 3.8cc! When it was unfilled, there wasnt the fluid in there we thought there should be. So the other possibility is that the records have been stuffed up along the way, we've gotten confused and I've never had in there what I thought I had. Other than that, of course, there's the possibility of a slip, I'd be surprised as I've had 3 CT scans and about 4 abdo xrays in the last year for cancer related reasons and my band has never looked obviously out of place. A very remote possibility is erosion - I'm horribly Iron depleted to the point that suggests a GI bleed somewhere and I know its not from my colon as that has all been checked out only in November. But my surgeon didnt think that at all likely, he said I'd have lost restriction entirely. After my monster fill, this morning, I can feel it, its at least held overnight. Its pretty good restriction but again, I've never had this much fill in before and would expect to be actually too tight. But lets just see how it goes. I've held off any weight gain the whole 9 months I was unfilled, and managed to get through seven months of this fill process with inadequate restriction but its darn hard work and I'm ever so slowly losing the battle now, a half kilo here and there that sticks around. Hopefully at least this fill will stick long enough just to lose 4 or 5 lb again! Not terribly worried, if the band needs to be replaced, the way it works here with my clinic, I paid $4000 up front and the rest was covered by Medicare and Private Health Insurance. All my aftercare, including any revision surgery will be free to me, the cost is billed directly to Medicare and I never have to put my hand in my pocket again. It will just be incovenient but oh well!
  19. Anytime that I see someone contemplating a revision, I would advise getting a second (and even third) opinion, both from the perspective that revisions are typically more complicated than a virgin surgery, and also the reasons for the revisions are more varied, and this is where the perspectives of different surgeons with different experiences is most valuable. Strictures and twists like you are describing are an indicator of technique problems (which isn't to say that there is something particularly quirky with your individual anatomy that would have caused problems with any surgeon, just that they are frequently associated) so it is quite possible that another surgeon who is more experienced specifically with the sleeve and sleeve related surgeries may have some other ideas of how to tackle your problem. There are some surgeons out there who routinely perform some very complex revisions (such as converting a problematic RNY to a DS) and this is the type of doc that you would like to consult with, as they would be best able to straighten out your sleeve (and if they concur that an RNY is the best approach for your particular problem, that provides a lot of confidence in deciding to go that route.) I tend to like DS surgeons for sleeve problems as they typically have a lot more experience with the sleeve and correcting sleeve problems (as the sleeve is a part of the DS, most of them have been doing sleeves for over twenty years, while most bariatric surgeons have been doing them part time for 5-10 years, and some less. https://www.dsfacts.com/duodenal-switch-surgeons.php gives a very incomplete listing of DS surgeons, and unfortunately, there aren't any very close to you - NY/NJ/PA area is the closest, but probably worth the effort; most can do initial consults over phone and email. Dr. Roslin in NYC and Dr. Greenbaum in NJ both have good reputations in the DS world for complex revisions. As a side note, the mini bypass isn't often done in the States as US insurance rarely approves it, and it has never been accepted by the ASMBS.

    Another surgery?

I'm sorry you are having a tough time. I second @ProudGrammy's advice. Give your pouch a second chance! Work on your head right now, not healing from another surgery. Weightloss after a revision isn't a slam dunk. Go to therapy. Go to group sessions WLS support groups locally, go to OA (overeaters anonymous). Find a way to get your head back in the game and refocus on losing your present regain. Go back to the basic rules of your forever diet from your surgeon. Many vets here lose all of their regain! You can do it!
  21. Lmao at can eat! I always thought bypass was just that. Eat and no digestion. LOL 200 lbs. wtg! Yay! what’s difference with original bypass and revision. Isn’t it the same?

    Question re: unfill then refill

Dr. Aceves in Mexico is $12,500 for a revision surgery from band to sleeve. He is an excellent doctor and the hospital he works out of is like a 5 star hotel. He is very experienced with band to sleeve revisions and I would not go to anyone else. I didn't feel that way when I got banded, but Dr. Aceves really has a lot of experience and is an excellent surgeon.
  23. I am confused? So you had your revision? If so make sure you are eating very little sips/bites of food and eat slowly. Make sure you are not eating too much. I am 40 days out and have 4 ounces of shake or 2 ounces of chicken at a time. I had my revision on September 10th and couldn't be happier!
  24. I did my revision from band to sleeve in one surgery 2 days ago. When the doctor came to see me he said he could only cut 60 percent of my stomach because it was a mess. Anyone have a big sleeve ? We're you able to lose weight ? I thought they move around 80 percent of your stomach not 60 percent. Really worried that I went to all this trouble & not get results . I feel that my doctor Should have told me before that this may happen .
  25. So sorry to hear this. I had a revision also and if I am correct the part that they remove is barely affected by the band. Did he say what he meant by "a mess"? I would definitely get proper clarificiation, sounds to me for some reason he went very conservative, I would want to know why. For me my surgeon removed 85% and I have been super successful. I am sure that you will really have to watch what and how much you eat to get your weight off. You might consider going to another doctor(say Mexico) in time, to get your stomach made smaller. I wish you the best
