Can you eat a whole burger when you have good restriction?
Sue Magoo replied to zuly98's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Yikkes! I don't think I could even eat half of a Jr. Whopper. I haven't actually tried a burger at a fast food restaurant since before I was banded. As far as fries go, I sometimes eat four of them if someone else gets them. I usually get a yogurt and fruit parfait if I have to go to McDonalds. I haven't gone to Burger King since being banded, but I imagine they have something similar to McDonald's yogurt. I have gone to Papa Gino's and get one piece of pizza when I go. Sometimes I can finish it and sometimes I cannot. I would get a fill if I could eat a Whopper Jr. and fries because I probably would eat that much if I could. My band is my belly cop! Best wishes to you and your band. Sue -
Thanks TexasMama! I usually don't eat anything after about 6 or 7 pm... Maybe I am not drinking enough water? I don't understand because it seems like the more water I drink the heavier I am the next day. I don't know what is up. I am eating 3 meals and 1 snack (usually a yogurt.) a day. I know the weight will catch up eventually, but I wish it would hurry up!!

Made Myself A List For Stuff To Have At Home After Surgery....
Janedeaux3 replied to Jlewis229's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Everyone's suggestions are great! I would like to add that I've been using my immersion blender with my soups, just found it easier. I purchased an inexpensive strainer from Walmart, which I've used a lot for said soups. Oh and colorful plastic baby spoons. I tried to take bites w regular soup spoons and I would take in too much to swallow comfortably. I've practically lived on vitamin water zero and watered down G2 (as my water), as not to elevate electrolytes, just maintain and hydrate. I've been using a large container of Fage 0% Greek yogurt. I could spoon out small portions and thin it w a little high protein milk and a little sprinkle of Splenda or sugar free Torani syrups to change it up a bit. ***A bag of Sonic ice**(Did you hear me sing??) I don't know how I would have survived w/o it. I even put it in my liquid Lortab to dilute it. Best wishes for you!!! ~Jane -
Thank you all for these ideas, I went to a frozen yogurt shop and asked if they had a book on the nutrition of the yogarts. I was the only one in the store and when I saw how high the carbs were (18-20) for ? Ounces, I wanted to leave but the guy was holding the cup and I was too embarrassed to just leave. I bought 2 ounces of vanilla sugar free and was out of there never to return. I thought jamba juice non fat yogart was a smaller carb count but I can't remember now. I'm going to try the Greek frozen Yogart. overall I really can't bring any of it home cause I eat more than one portion. Dryers sugar free popcycles, I can control those and they help w/ nausea

Day 11 post OP. My program went straight to soft foods about a week post OP. I tried eggs once and it didn't go down well so I've abstained for now. I went back to liquids fir a few days and now able to tolerate refried beans, cottage cheese, plain yogurt, fish and even chicken breasts. Quantity is the issue, I think about 5 to 6 bites of fish and chicken and I am full. I'm allowed 1/2 cup cooked veggies OR non citrus fruits with my proteins but I've not done much of that yet. I typically pair my fish or chicken with cottage or ricotta cheese or plain yogurt. No starches, grains, sugar or dense carbs allowed for now and I don't miss it. So averaging 60g to 70g of protein daily, less than 10g of net carbs. About 500 cals (on a good day) daily. Went back to work yesterday, dealt with head hunger for a bit because of past routines with food and colleagues but working through it. Gently trying to get 10K steps per day if able. Surgical scars have closed but feel a pinch on the largest incision when I bend too quickly otherwise it's like surgery didn't happen. I choose to weigh weekly so next weigh in is Friday. Prayer is that we all ease into this new lifestyle effortlessly[emoji120][emoji120][emoji120] Sent from my SM-N960U using BariatricPal mobile app

Miss Mac replied to marfar7's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
The Fit and Active Vanilla Greek Yogurt that I get from Aldi's has 140 calories per cup. -
It gets easier, but truthfully i am 10 weeks out and if i eat anything to dense( ie i still cannot eat chicken salad!) its like your having major chest pains. And then whoopsie, back up it comes. Stick to the purées and yogurts as long as you need, good luck!

Any August 31st Sleevers?
QueenLaamiri replied to dorothy510's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I used the little cups they gave me, until I reached stage 4 -reg diet. The protein is the most important. But for food I liked mushy things like can salad. Turkey salads, puréed in the cups and that was great. Cheese!!!! Fish baked, tuna out of the can with celery salt, Greek yogurts, all have High protein, low low sugars and low carbs. -
Any August 31st Sleevers?
PamInWA replied to dorothy510's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I went out yesterday and got a couple of the protein water type drinks but I'm really not wild about them - tried Isopure and Cocotein but they are too sickly sweet. I ordered the sample pack of Syntrax nectar from mybariatricpantry.com but I'm getting my protein from premier, Greek yogurt, and unjury chicken soup for now. -
6 weeks out - how many calories are appropriate?
loridee11 replied to Fat2FabMyWay's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
We have similar stats and surgery around the same time. I don't have much hunger, but I had a really easy recovery (yay!) and don't seem to have any food aversions or challenges with eating and drinking which means I've been able to push myself to meet my protein and fluid goals from early on. That means even though I'm limiting my meals to 3-4 oz lean protein (usually with light mayo or greek yogurt because I am still on soft foods, or I eat a lot of eggs) and then if I am still hungry some soft cooked veggies, I get almost 800 calories a day. Part of that is because I'm still using protein shakes to supplement I am seeing my surgeon and NUT next week for my 6 week. My weight loss has been really slow the last 3 weeks and I'm hoping it's just a stall and they'll have some advice to pick it back up. -
I hadn't tried this recipe yet. I stumble upon this on foodnetwork and find this chef named Ellie Krieger. Though, I don't know very much about her, but her recipes are healthy cooking. I might give this a try at my dad place when I go up to Washington state during the holidays. I can't have mayonnaise or other stuff cause all the brands in store have corn syrup and sugar. It just taste awful and too sweet. I can understand why people make there own mayonnaise and ketup. I hope you guys like sea food. Specially, lobsters. Ingredients 1/2 cup nonfat plain Greek-style yogurt or 2/3 cup regular, plain nonfat yogurt 3 tablespoons juice 1 pound cooked meat or cooked Protein 29 g; Carb 25 g; Fiber 3 g; Cholesterol 85 mg; Sodium 720 mg Excellent source of: Protein, Niacin, Vitamin B12, Copper, Magnesium, Manganese, Phosphorus, Selenium, Zinc Good source of: Fiber, Vitamin B6, Calcium, Iron, Potassium

So in honor of this post, I wrote down everything I ate in the last two days. Many of theses are repeat items that I had both days..... eggs, bacon, chicken, shredded pork, turkey sausage, shrimp, cheddar cheese, Parmesan cheese, power crunch bar, Quest bar, natures valley Protein bar, quest chips, Greek yogurt, unflavored whey protein, peanuts, asparagus, spinach, onion, cherry tomatoes, broccoli, baked Beans, red bell pepper, yellow squash, Kashi go lean Cereal, All Bran cereal, ground flax seed, blueberries, orange, coconut milk, 1/2 and 1/2, decaf coffee, decaf tea, plain Water, protein hot chocolate, Bai5, water with sweet leaf flavor drops, dark chocolate candy filled with brandy liquor. Portions ranged from a couple tablespoons to maybe 1/3 cup (except the liquids) and eaten over 14-15 "meals". My weekday variety is much lower. Probably more like 10-12 different things over 5-6 meals. I guess the OP's therapist would have a field day with me!

Lapband - Moving on to solids
DropWt4Life replied to jenhanna87's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
You should be fine with that. I am not a lap-band patient, but us sleevers still deal with the slider issue. I have protein smoothies all the time, and it holds me over pretty well. I would choose the lowest sugar Greek yogurt you can find. As far as fruit, maybe some raspberries, blueberries, blackberries, and/or strawberries. I add 1/2 banana to mine along with about a 1/2 cup of frozen spinach. If you add all of these in frozen, they make a great milkshake type protein shake. I have made 32 ounces at one time, and divided it into four 8 oz. servings. I then drank two each day. It really is more filling than regular protein shakes. If you have access to seeds in Scotland, those are great as well. Chia, Hemp and Flax seeds add good fats and protein to your shakes as well. Good luck! -
Mine was eleven years old and even though I had no fill in mine and was still vomiting almost every time I ate. I could only get things like ice cream, pudding and yogurt through it. I went to a different surgeon (the one who did the band moved away about 5 years ago) and said it had to come out because eventually I wasn't even going to get water through it. During the band removal and revision to a RNY they discovered that the band had slipped, and the slip caused a hiatal hernia. I had this done a bit over 4 months ago and weigh less than the lowest weight I ever got with the band. If your surgeon doesn't want to consider removing it, maybe you should consider finding another surgeon who will work with you before it gets worse.

February bypass buddies?
FluffyChix replied to RunningLibrarian's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Keep in mind, you may need to verify your meal size with your doc or RD. Because when most people here 4-6oz, they start thinking weight--as in weighing on a scale. But, the reference they gave you still alludes to a volumetric measurement. 1oz by VOLUME (measure) = 2tbsp = 1/8cup by VOLUME = 1/4oz by weight 4oz by VOLUME (measure) = 8tbsp = 1/2cup by VOLUME = 2oz by weight 6oz by VOLUME (measure) = 12tbsp = 3/4cup by VOLUME = 3oz by weight ************** Conversely, most protein in it's pure/fluffy/cooked state, unweighted down by meat lube or other moisture additives like light or fat free mayo and dressings and sauces add up like this: 1oz protein by weight (then flaked, chopped fine, or pulled) = 2oz by VOLUME = 1/4c by VOLUME = 4tbsp 2oz protein by weight (then flaked, chopped fine, or pulled) = 4oz by VOLUME = 1/2c by VOLUME = 8tbsp ************** And then there's the whole "meat salad thing" like tuna salad, etc... 2oz tuna, salmon, canned chicken by weight (flaked, chopped, pulled) + 1tbsp low fat mayo/yogurt + 1/2tsp mustard + 1/2tsp dill relish = 1/4c by VOLUME = 4tbsp. It will weigh more than 2oz by weight because of the addition of the condiments. Fun and intriguing bs isn't it? -
Pills and Supplements
diva replied to princess_n_thep's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I need to lose 28 pounds before surgery. I am aiming towards the last week in July or the first week in August. I am in full blown menopause and my appetite is scary. Its an actual appetite-not head hunger-like growling in my stomach kind of appetite. Ah-hormones. My band doc gave me a scrip for phentermine, its for 15 mg. I can take it 2x a day or once a day. The scrip is for 60 pills. It is saving my sanity. And it putting a rocket up my butt by jumpstarting the weight loss by allowing me control over my appetite. I think of it like the band- a tool which helps me to the right thing. I am finally eating right and good. Keeping to 1,000-1,200 calories a day. The doc will need to check my blood pressure every 2 weeks. BTW the only problems I have besides being fat is apnea & high cholesteral which is controlled big time by 40 mg of Lipitor- I don't have diabetes or high blood pressure. I took 2 for the first 4 days, one after breakfast and one around 3:30. I always eat before taking one-something solid like a sandwhich or a lean cuisine. Never on a slim fast or something like grapes or yogurt. I don't get any jitters if I take it with a solid foundation in my stomach. After the first 4 days I am now taking only 1 late morning. My stomach has went down and I don't need 2 to keep control. I have used it before and lost 30 pounds but of course put it back on after I went off them. Which is why I am being banded. As a baby boomer and child of the sixties- I have taken real street speed , nothing like a baggie full of black beauties in your freezer to let you eat nothing but cheetos while loosing weight and cleaning the whole house in 15 minutes while rocking to Led Zepplin. I have yet to even vacuum since I've been on these! LOL I say if your doctor feels based on your history (and this is my lap band doc not my PCP) and you are being monitered and you practice some common sense and you don't have high blood pressure or heart problems then go for it. And you have got to eat. No flirting with fasting or forgetting to eat. Thats when you get the willies. You gotta eat. BTW I've also been on Meridia in the past and it did zip. And I don't recall the name of that other drug that blocks fat but gives you a very attractive side effect of oily bowel discharge (can you say romantic? hee hee hee) Anyway-To each his own but I am happy to have a some help. -
Why are my readings not coming down?!?!?!
chitowngirl replied to bascott73's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Do you track your food? Maybe the protein drinks you are drinking contain a lot of sugars, have you been eating something that contains high sugar? Yogurt can contain a lot of sugar if your not careful. Even though you are not eating a lot I would still really watch the sugar content. Hope you figure this out soon. -
Not everyone gets the barium swallow after surgery to check for leaks. My surgeon doesn't do it. I will be on water immediately the first two days. Then protein shakes, yogurt,, jello...

Mixed with tuna instead of mayo, shred or dice a little apple and celery with it and a little lemon pepper. They served samples at support group one night night and NOT being a Greek yogurt (or any yogurt!) fan, it was still really good. (They used some honking big radish of some sort and cut it super thin like chips to dip in to it. Yum!)

All this sounds great, oh how I wish I liked yogurt and cottage cheese....

I've always done Centrum (or the generic equivalent) and haven't had any issues. Lots of WLS patients take them. As long as a vitamin meets the ASBMS (American Society of Bariatric & Metabolic Surgeons) requirements, it should be fine. for calcium citrate, I have three ways I take it --- Upcal D (a powder which I mix into things like yogurt), generic calcium citrate tablets from Walgreens or CVS, and Bariatric Advantage calcium chews which are great for traveling or for when you're out and about and not near your regular calcium stash (I always keep a few of them in my purse for that reason).

Changing how I consume my protein
par1959 replied to Kindle's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
Has anyone tried Chobani Greek Yogurt. It comes in a 5.3 OZ size. 13 grams of protein also 13 grams of sugar:( but I find it avery satisfying breakfast. Add a little fruit and some granola it my current fav. 120 cals per serving -
It has been just over a month for you, and I think 10 lbs is a very respectable loss. As for meals, I make salads (Romaine, Parmesan Cheese, grilled chicken breast, cut up a hard boiled egg, and use light Caesar dressing), using a container for dressing and the other salad stuff. I also sometimes put Turkey meatballs in spaghetti or marinara sauce, some Parmesan cheese on top in a microwavable container (meal portion) and nuke for 2 minutes. That way you eliminate the pasta at least for the time being. When you feel ready to try pasta, use the whole grain type. Better for you. I also like chili. I brown a package of ground turkey, scrape of the narly fat stuff that cooks off it, then add a 15 oz can of kidney (light or dark) or pinto beans, undrained, a 15 oz can tomato sauce, a small can of chopped green chilies, some chopped onions, and simmer until hot and bubbly. Then I sprinkle Kraft Free fat free cheese on top and let it sit for a little bit so the cheese will melt. The I get out my Tupperware and divide up the whole pan into about 6 meals or more. Then you can nuke for 2 minutes to reheat at home or at work. No fridge at work? Get an insulated lunch bag that uses freezer packs. I carry a ready to drink protein shake, some yogurt, a small can of V8, some nuts (not roasted and salted, but the kind you bake with--I get almonds, walnuts, and pecans and count 10 of each and put in a snack bag--they can be a little hard to digest, so you might want to wait a while on those). I also get cereal and snacks from kaysnaturals.com. They sell them in 1-1.5 serving bags, and I will often pour the cereal into my yogurt to eat, or eat it by itself. They also have protein chips in different flavors. They sell a sampler box that allows you to try different flavors. I also make crustless pizza. You may find that chewy bread tends to get stuck (I do fine with fat free croutons on my salad-they disintegrate rather than get chewy). I take two microwavable dishes (meal portion size), cover the bottom with 1/3 to 1/2 jar of Ragu Homemade Style pizza sauce; cover with Hormel Turkey Pepperoni; cover with toppings of choice--I like peppers and onions and keep Birdseye Pepper Stir Fry in the freezer to use--it is just chunks of 3 color peppers and onions: cover with Kraft Free fat free Mozarella or Cheddar; nuke for 2 minutes. As a recovering pizzaholic--I would work out at Curves, pick up a pizza for dinner, and eat the entire 12-15 pizza myself--this really satisfies my craving for pizza. Try it. A lot of post-op eating is trial and error. I don't do low carb, but I try to eat good carbs, like cereal, salad, whoe grain pasta. I have read where some people have a problem with salad greens; I don't. Sometimes I don't know for sure until I try something. Just be sure to chew thoroughly. Some of the harder to digest foods will go down if chewed thoroughly. Hope this helps.
