    Question for the ladies

screwed up menstrual cycles seem to be very common in the first few weeks or months after surgery. It's supposedly due to the fact that estrogen is stored in fat cells, and it starts flooding your body during rapid weight loss. It'll stabilize once your weight loss slows way down. a couple of people mentioned Depo-Provera. I don't know about the side effects after WLS as I didn't have WLS until I was post-menopausal, but I was on Depo when I was in my 30s. I gained about 45 lbs on it, and I switched to another birth control method after my ob/gyn couldn't guarantee that the weight gain would eventually stop. It has to do with its effect on hormones.

    Help!!! Menopause. :(

Well, my weight gain is from menopause. I'm sure of it. Again my diet is in check, I have restriction(sweet spot). I drink the green drink Dr OZ, most morning's and piece of fruit. Lunch and dinner consist of fish and veggies on a small saucer plate. Snacks consist of low cal cheese, grapes etc. I will admit I cheat a couple of times a month(small cheats). I take care of my parents weekly, watch my grand-kids 1 to 2 days a week, plus work out 2 or 3 times a week on my treadmill... Just saw my doctor this morning, he wants me to add in lite weight training. The only prescription meds I take are the biodentical hormones. No depression meds. Since nov of 2011 I have gained 22 pounds.... Good luck to All. Thanks!

    Help!!! Menopause. :(

Any weight gain? If I have restriction with the band, why am I not losing weight? I eat very little everyday! Not to mention, I eat health foods, very health, I might cheat 1 time a week. And that is a small amount...

    Considering Liposuction

Definitely wait until you have reached and maintained your goal weight. Your body is going to change so many times before you reach goal. In addition remember when you take fat cell out of one area of your body your body will readjust and any weight gain will be in another part of your body (not that you will gain). Extra weight on the body is always better in the lower extremities than the middle. By the time you reach goal your thighs will be so much thinner and you will probably just want to get rid of the extra skin by then.

    Countdown to your Bandiversary!

Yes we can definitely do it! I really want to hit goal this year, and I have renewed my passion for it... I made a New Year's Resolution with myself that I am no longer going to eat any type of chips, full fat or full sugar Ice-cream, or any types of pastries. Ever. Period. End of Story. Well today is day 5 and so far so good. I cannot eat these foods, because they are sliders and I never get full on them, they are loaded with everything I do not need and they are preventing me from losing and helped in the weight gain I experienced. I am now 244 (again) so I am right now at the goal I originally intended for myself. I now have a new goal to get back to 239 by my Bandiversary. Good luck all!!
  6. I am just starting this whole process. I called the insurance Co. and they sent me a list of requirements they need before approval. One of them is *Documentation from multidisciplinary non surgical weight loss program with unsuccessful weight loss or weight loss followed by weight gain* They don't say for how long? I have been on a million diets, just none of them have been supervised. Does this mean I have to do the supervised diet thing? Already getting frustrated and I have just started!

    Diet pill

I am having a lot of trouble losing the 15 pounds, my Molina insurance wants me to lose to quality for surgery. I was in a couple car accidents a few years back and suffered a tramatica brain injury. It was the frontal lobe area. This has to do with plnning. I can't for the life of me plan my meals. On top of that I have a bad knee. I got off the pain pills because I think they were attributing to my weight gain. So, I was wondering if a diet pill would help me lose the 15 pounds before surgery. I think once I have the sugery, things will be easier. I know surgery is just a tool, but I really believe they cut out a lot of the grelin hormone out and possibly other hormones as well. I believe that weight issues are very entwined and everybody is different and so many things can snow ball. Things can go from bad to worse and all of the sudden, your so heavy, you can't move and then you have to ride those electric carts at walmart. And then, you get so darn depressed, all you want is comfort food and then you beat your self for messing up your diet and then you get depressed, ecetera, etc. And then the way our society looks and treats its over weight population is sad. Any suggestions anyone has about the diet pill or anything else be would be greatly appriciated. Sent from my SM-G900T using the BariatricPal App

I REALLY hate PCOS...I feel defeated...

Have you tried metformin and Spironolactone for PCOS? That's what I'm on and balances out my hormones. I've been on both since I was 16 and diagnosed with pcos. These meds at the right dosages should help with any weight gain that's due to pcos. Metformin alone can do it. I just have the added spironolactone because I have high androgen with my pcos.

    14 Days Post Op

I had my sleeve Aug 8. down only 8 lbs since surgery as I had left the hospital with a weight gain of 4 lbs. I am very tired and weak and find I get short of breath easily. I started preop at 240 and am now at 221. I wish I could be skinny right away too but realize this is a patience thing. I am very thankful to have this opportunity so don't want to mess anything up. I have been walking for 40 minutes a day but other than that I am recovering. 1 more week of liquid diet and then I start mushy foods. I have a wedding on Saturday and it will be hard when the buffet line starts. Haven't figured out what I will do, probably go sit in the car LOL

    Insurance GERD Revision

Just curious if insurance will cover you if they want to do a revision from a sleeve to a bypass. 18 months out no weight gain buy having unbelievable GERD affecting my health.
  11. I agree with everything that has been said here so far - no one is the perfect patient. (Well, maybe this elusive unicorn is out there, but fear not, sister - you are in good, imperfect company!) I agree with other folks that have said that this weight gain is not really an embarrassment, so much as a hiccup. You absolutely DESERVE to get back on track. You are worth it, right? RIGHT. :-) The best thing to conquer the disgust you feel with yourself and your depression is to get out of the pattern of having no control over your band, and get some professional help! If your Doc or surgeon is not available, find someone who is. Make some calls, get on the web, do some research... the moment you begin to take this matter into your own hands, the faster a solution will present itself and the better you will be able to sleep at night. We are cheering you on! Keep us posted...!

    Stretch mark cream

You get stretch marks because the skin is stressed out so much from weight gain (or growth spurts) that the elasticity of the skin can't accommodate - they are technically damaged areas of skin that won't ever go away without surgery. All those expensive lotions have in the fine print that they will "reduce the appearance of stretch marks" so don't waste your money. No cream or lotion can remove them, so just use some good moisturizing lotion that isn't too expensive to keep the skin hydrated as they fade out.

Over 60 and having the sleeve

Hi, I think having the sleeve was the very best thing I have ever done for myself. Food seems to be what I went to when things were good or bad. Like you I gained weight with y first child and I was 27 when I had mine. Now I now longer make food my main thought. I no longer let the food control me. I am in control of the food. I no long live to eat. I now eat to live and be healthy. You have to know that this is NO miracle cure. It does requires work and effort on your part and some exercise too. We have all been on the roller coaster of lose the weight gain the weight back. I must have joined Weight Watcher 20 times and got frustrated just like you. I believe that it works for some, but I have watched so many of them regain it too. You have to be willing to make a lifestyle change. It isn't about being on a diet, but changing forever how you are going to eat. This is the first time in my life that I have maintained my 105 pound weight loss for 4 years now. And it is something that I know I can do for the rest of my life too. I am 67 now and did this when I was 63. I did not have insurance that paid for mine. I am so very happy that the insurance is really coming around and paying for these for people. I feel so very lucky to have gone to Dr. Aceves, because I believe he is one of the very best Weight Loss Suregons out there. There are a lot of good ones, out there I am sure. I can only speak about my experience, and going to Mexicali, Mexico. I know for a fact that I received so much better care than anything I have ever received in any US hospital. I wish you nothing but success, and I am always out here if you have any questions at all about this. Hugs, Suzanne

Over 60 and having the sleeve

I will be out 7 years in April. I am still thrilled with it. I have gained a little bit of weight back because I can't seem to keep sweets out of my mouth. I lost it before and gained it back because I had 3 back surgeries last year. It's easier to diet when I gain weight back because I'm never really hungry. I just like to eat junk when everyone else is, and of course, that causes weight gain.

Ugh need to vent about a Husband that doesn't understand!

He did go to the first consultation and has a clear understanding of the surgery, etc., from me explaining it and bringing brochures and sending him info from online, he just doesn't understand the problems I have with emotional eating, appetite control, weight gain from my meds..and everything else that causes my failing on every diet. And whether he is fine with how I am or not ..this is for me and will make me happy & complete. I am sure he won't mind though when I am thinner and looking hot lol
  16. Absolutely not if I dont eat right and workout the weight gain begins so no it was tool to help me start myjourney!
  17. as usual, I totally agree with Jaelzion. the first year or so most people do have lowered hunger and most of us are pretty gung-ho about following our programs, and as long as you do that, the surgery WILL work. You have to really monitor yourself for life, though. After a year or two, you're dealing with the hunger monster again (although for some, it's not as intense as it was pre-surgery), and you're not always as committed as you were that first year ("diet fatigue"), so weight gain is easy if you don't watch yourself. if you find yourself dealing with the urge to binge eat again, then like Jaelzion said, work with a therapist. The surgery won't cure that. A lot of us work with therapists and find it helpful.

    I’m not happy

Hi. I’ve struggled with my weight for most of my adult life. My weight has fluctuated so much and I’m tired of looking and feeling the way I feel. I lost my mom four months ago and it hurts like hell. I wish you all the best and I pray for your comfort-emotionally, psychologically and physically. I’m scheduled for surgery on December 10th. I’m nervous and worried but I’m also excited to look and feel better. My back and feet hurt constantly and my anxiety and depression is all over the place and I dread taking pictures and going out because I’m so ashamed of my weight gain. Since my mom has passed food has definitely been my comfort.

Fighting your food! Getting tired of it?

Also fogot to mention that since my first fill ofc3 cc I can only eat 2-3 bites then it comes up. But usually I can then eat the rest of my food. This happens at almost every meal. I am not as excited with this fill as I was before it. And I take a few weight gaining pills for my bipolar and even with the fill I am losing very slowly...almost too slow. I try to watch what I eat but when I get really hungry I eat whatever will go down the easiest. Bad choice? And my hair is falling out. It was thin bc of hypothyroidism but now have a few balding spots. I see my endocrinologist today so maybe get my thyroid in check and maybe with eating more protein my hair will start coming back. There's alot more but I'll leave it like this. Thx I am bipolar too. I had my Dr. switch as many as he could to liquids. Helps a lot since some of those pills are huge!
  20. I’ll try and keep this as brief as possible. Sorry if I rant on and on. As I went from 240 lbs to 390 lbs between 2009-2019 I slowly hid myself away from friends and family. The truth is I was in denial about how bad things were getting and I was embarrassed. I was ashamed of how I couldn’t keep up with my friends just walking around the city or fitting into booths at restaurants for family milestones. I was out of breath walking into work from the parking lot. I felt like if I could avoid these things in front of other people, if other people couldn’t confirm how limited I had become, it somehow made it less true. I have missed SO many adventures and huge important events in my loved ones lives simply because I was physically unable. This hurts my heart. In 2018 I ditched a good friend’s bachelorette weekend out of town because I was so anxious about how I wouldn’t be able to keep up with everyone. Like literally I could not walk around and I felt ridiculous going to clubs with girls wearing their best outfits and me in an oversized T-shirt. By that point I couldn’t stand for 5 mins without my lower back screaming. Our friendship has not been the same since. I have always thought that was the turning point in our friendship. Now fast forward to late 2019. I happened to be invited to another good friend’s bachelorette weekend. This is a friend I met in college and we were so close we lived together for a couple of years. This is also when my depression/weight gain really got bad. I did my best to hide it, but I’m sure it was obvious. Over the last 7 years I have make excuses to avoid meeting up with her because she is so active. I even prayed she wouldn’t ask me to be a bridesmaid. How sad is that? I really didn’t think I could make it through the dress shopping bit. Pre-surgery I was 390 lbs and a size 26. This friend has run the NYC marathon and I was at least 220 lbs heavier than any other girl in her friend circle. When I was invited on the bachelorette weekend I immediately thought of ways to get out of it. I told one of the maids of honor that I didn’t think it would be a good idea since it was still early after surgery and I wasn’t sure how I’d feel. Well it’s been almost 5 months and I’ve been so lucky to have zero complications. My mobility is much better too. I am also sober by choice. I was never a big drinker anyways. I partied pretty hard as a teen so by the time I got to college I was somewhat past that phase. It doesn’t make me feel good and now with a sleeve I feel like alcohol serves me no purpose. Anyways what I am looking for is real honest advice. I feel immense guilt over declining this invite. I have thought about how I would feel if I was my friend. I could see how she would be upset or disappointed. Am I wrong to not go? I don’t drink and I’m trying so hard to stick to my diet. I know if I really wanted to I could make it work. I don’t want people to tell me what I want to hear. I guess I just want someone to say they understand what I’m saying and feeling. I don’t have anyone in my family or friends that are even overweight. I feel like no one can relate. Has anyone else been through this? Did things get better as you lost weight?

    new years weightloss challenge

you will do great! I didnt have to stop taking any meds so i don't know from personal experience about the weight gain. as for the new years challenge I'm offically down 20lbs so im going to set a smaller seccond goal of another 10lbs.
  23. I agree with clk, I even have had a hysterectomy and every month I gain and lose with in that one week. I am a slow loser as well. I lose about 1 lb. a week, so I know how bad that weight gain looks. I try to stay away from the salty meats around that time of the month, because I also swell ( I can tell with my ring ). As for the constipation, it's common because you're not putting as much food in as before. (tmi) I go about once a week now. If it goes longer than that I have a prune.

    Unexplained Weight gain post revision

I am not working out. I can't due to other health issues. I walk on a regular basis but that's it. This isn't muscle. I average 50 oz of fluid a day. I already saw my dietitian. This is not diet related as I was successfully maintaining pre revision while eating more. I absolutely cannot physically eat enough calories to be gaining weight. I am also vomiting up much of what I eat. My maintenance TDEE is 1548 calories to maintain 140 pounds. I am tracking my calories and averaging 800 in my fitness pal daily. I measure everything. Even if I was off at all I am not eating double that amount of calories. It's literally impossible. Again I was successfully maintaining while eating more. This is completely unexplained weight gain and not diet related. I am so tired of suggestions to see my dietitian when I just saw her. I have a diet plan from her that I am following. I have a follow up with my surgeon next week.
  25. Thanks Amazon! Yes, we are all so different. I, myself, have PCOS and have gained weight REALLY fast this year. Which is what prompted me to have the surgery now. I had POSE (it's in fda trials now) back in 2011 at 230 lbs. I lost down to 168 but never got below that. POSE is sooooo not close to the restriction that you get from sleeve but back then being cash pay I was scared to do the sleeve. Well, fast forward 4 years, a baby, fighting weight gain for about 2 years but kept it off and then BAM! Blink my eyes and 30 lbs back on me since March. So..I know I've got some issues working against me but I also know my stomach is stretched back out and I'm not satisfied on the smaller portions any longer. I also have my head wrapped around the fact that if I push it, I'll regain again and I refuse to do that. This is it for me so I'm praying all goes well and I'll get to goal and be grown up enough to keep myself there However, it is good to see those without 100 or more to lose hitting their goal because I know we don't lose as fast as those with over 100 to lose so I wondered if that affected the end result.
