    what surprised you?

    Everyone is different in this process, however, I was surprised more people didn't struggle with their pre-op diet. I was on a strict liquid only diet for 2 weeks before my surgery. It completely zapped my energy level. I had to work from home because I was so weak. Following surgery I had a very difficult time getting my protein in during the liquid phase because I couldn't stomach any protein shakes or protein water. Many people can bounce back to work relatively quickly following gastric sleeve. But for me it's taken much more time. I didn't expect to take more than 2 weeks off work, yet that's what my body needed.

    there seem to be a lot of different pre-op diets. Mine was strictly ultra-low cal (or no cal) liquids, 4-5 protein shakes a day, plus sugar free Jello, sugar free popsicles, and a limited amount of tomato juice and broth (I think a cup of each). But that was two weeks. Some people are allowed to have a small dinner with regular food, but I was not. Hopefully you'll be able to since you have to do it for four weeks. Mine was just for two - thankfully!!!
  4. Surgery finally approved and scheduled for late Nov. Has anyone had to be on a pre-op liquid diet for 4 weeks, this is my doctors recommendation.

    Dumping or something else?

    I agree with @catwoman7, but I'll add one thing. There are three things I suppose this could be: Dumping syndrome. Not all that likely, but possible I guess? A reaction to one of the ingredient. Could be xylitol, but there are other "not-really-foods" in there that may have also caused a reaction? That said, my money's on excess fiber. Those bars seem to have quite a bit of fiber in them, especially soluble fiber. Soluble fiber will swell in the gut, expanding to a much larger size than the bar itself. As a bypass patient, I think that definitely could have caused your symptoms.

    I survived on the warm LF chicken bone broth for “dinners” for a while. It got cold a few weeks ago and I actually craved it. Agree with the don’t buy too much camp, because your tastes will change. I can’t stand jello now, nor popsicles.
  7. No difference in actual eating (but i did/do) burp an awful lot. Fullness felt different…it was/is a pressure in my chest instead of a bloated feeling in my lower abdomen. further…when drank alcohol the first time (about 3 weeks post op) for swear i could feel it travelling down my intestines. After a few months (can’t remember exactly when) alcohol no longer produced that sensation.
  8. Well I am currently on the last trimester of my pregnancy. We are to be having a scheduled c-section due to previous c-sections I have had with my previous babies. Everything has looked good with baby's health as well as mine. Baby is about 3lbs as of now. We have about 8 more weeks left. Weight gain has been a total of 4 lbs. Nothing else new, just keep getting my protein in daily, drinking lots of water, and taking my vitamins. One pregnancy symptom that is horrible is heartburn. I have it soooo bad every day as well as leg cramps. LilaNicole congrats again and I'm so excited for your bundle of joy.

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

    Surgery date Nov 22nd. I'm self-paid so everything is moving fast, just need to do a couple of mandatory classes and in 2 weeks get the surgery clearances. Can't deny I was thinking about Thanksgiving, but I will either be on preop or post op, and I would rather get it done that week that I may not be as busy with work.

    Constipation

    I have an issue with constipation. I take 2 colace in the morning and 1 at night and after talking to my team about it last week I've added fiber gummies with some success. I was going 1-2 weeks with no bm and then pooping what felt like solid boulders(I know TMI!!!) Pushing to the point of almost passing out. I eat food, healthier food but food.     October 2022 surgery support

    Hi, My surgery is on monday so we will be very close on our journey together I will be in the hospital until friday. For me I have made bone broth and frozen into cubes for easy heating. I got some collagen protein to add to my water and clear liquids. I also have jello, sugar free popsicles (otterpops, freezer pop, ice pops-- the ones in the tube). Once I'm allowed all liquids, i will graduate to various broth soups- I have Pho broth cubes, various Cup O soup packets that I can strain, Miso soup, and a nice clear mushroom soup flavor packet that I can add to the bone broth. I also have clear whey protein in blood orange flavor and a bunch of sample packets of different clear whey protein flavors. Some flavor drops so i can keep things interesting through the period as well.. I will also be adding unflavored whey protein powder to my liquids to make getting my protein in easier once im cleared to do so. Already told my husband to bring me a bottle of water and a Sugar-free gatorade when he picks me up- I have a three hour flight from Turkey, and a 1 hour drive from Dusseldorf, Germany to our home in the Netherlands. Probably wont need both, but it will be nice to switch in between the two if possible. I have intentionally not eaten any pumpkin flavored things yet this season so that I will be excited to eat Pumpkin soup when im allowed.

    Scared to go through with surgery

    Thank you so much for your answer! I'm 5'4" and my BMI went from 39 to 34.5 in 3 weeks on my meds. Starting from 230lbs and now at 198lbs. My endocrinologist asked if I considered that my PCP is fat phobic... Which is what makes me concerned. I'm just not sure if that's why he didn't want to check my hormones before sending me to bariatrics. I knew he didn't listen to my concerns much, but I didn't realize how much of an impact that would have on this outcome. I kept thinking I would be getting a vsg and it's good for me, but I've almost been nutrient deficient my entire life. Now, am I being biased to think this way about my PCP or is this me being sensitive? If this helps put things into perspective: Nutritionist and endocrinologist= female PCP and surgeon = male I appreciate everyone's replies! Sent from my M2007J3SY using BariatricPal mobile app
  13. talk to your endocrinologist and listen to your instincts. it sounds like you found the cause of weight gain and it is resolving. you can always do the surgery later if you stall out!
  14. I'm a bit scared to go through with my surgery. It's planned for late November. I talked to the nutritionist for pre-op and she realized something was wrong with my hormones, because I generally don't eat much and I work out a lot. She protested with my PCP to look at my hormones, and told him I needed to see an endocrinologist. Long story short I'm on meds for hypothyroidism, but my bariatric surgeon and PCP still say I need the surgery. My endocrinologist says don't do it. I've been on the hypothyroid meds for 3 weeks and I'm down 32lbs and officially under 200lbs. Am I being too sensitive and thinking my PCP and surgeon are fat phobic or should I trust them? My nutritionist is saying hold off on it because she doesn't think it's an eating problem, but a hormone problem, and I can't help but believe her since I've seen crazy results on my thyroid meds.     so i just "ate" for first time since surgery (my plan is 2 week clear liquid, 2 week yogurt/cottage cheese, 2 week soft/puree, then regular) I had a quarter cup of yogurt and i can feel my tummy gurgling lol its like it is cutting flips in there

    I can see how this can be alarming. I'm trying to remember all this as I go through the process. I still have the worries in my head that this won't work and I'll be one of the people who don't find success... my body so darned and determined to hover around 290 pounds for life. Logic is what you're all talking about with stalls, calories, water retention - but the mind can be so tricky. ' ♥️

    Hey! I got my surgery on October 6th and I'm doing fantastic. I'm here if you need any support or suggestions on things to eat or anything like that. I'm now on phase two where I can have cream low fat soups and a couple other things that I wasn't able to have last week.     Back to work after one week??

    I stayed completely off work for the week following surgery, then worked from home for the next week (plus Labor Day). Coming back to the office was both wonderful and challenging. Getting up and down from my desk chair was difficult, but as liveaboard15 mentioned, having a cane nearby was definitely helpful (we had a spare one from my husband's foot surgery).

    Stall on loss

    This. I fit this pattern to a T. I am 14 months out. I'm working out hard, tracking calories, and have dropped into the 4-5 bs a month range. The fast loss is only at the very beginning for most people, and will slow down. You will have stalls and it will be frustrating unless you are someone very lucky. This is a long game, not a quick fix by any means.

    nope - "normal" WLS patients do not lose that much that quickly. Maybe if they started off at 600 lbs, but otherwise, no. You might find some "normal" WLS patients ("normal" as in starting off in the 200s or 300s - and maybe low 400s) who lose 30+ lbs the first month, but even that's not common - and they certainly wouldn't keep up that pace after the first month. I've been hanging out on bariatric forums for the eight or so years, and just based on posts I've read (which have been thousands), I'd say most of us lose around 15-25 lbs the first month, then about 10 lbs (give or take) a month for a few months - then it drops to around 5 lbs - then 2 lbs......then eventually stops. as far as not losing any weight the last 1.5 weeks, you're in the infamous three-week stall that most of us experience.     Agree with everything @kcuster83 said above. I love Crystal Light, but had to stay away the first few days after surgery. It was just too harsh immediately after surgery, but a week or two in it was totally fine. You may need to experiment. I wound up drinking a lot of warm bone broth, which was great because it has more protein than regular broth, felt nice in my tummy, and also counted for fluid. I also used to love all the Premier Protein shakes, and post op I hated everything except the Vanilla which was tolerable. The Caffe Latte is also delicious but I couldn't drink it for the first 6 months because of the caffeine. I switched to Unjury protein powders in soy milk. Yum.

    5-15 lbs per WEEK?!? For the first few MONTHS?!? That is a bold (and borderline irresponsible) statement for a publication to make. If I lost 15 lbs per week i would’ve been NEGATIVE 5 lbs in 4 months. Dust Particles. Anti-matter? Does anti-matter have negative mass??…i digress… I didn’t even hit an average of 5lbs per week (for first 4 months), and from reading on here i was one of the faster losers. Pro tip: manage (lower?) ur expectations and revel in your accomplishments. It will save you alot of angst. P.S. Congrats on the 20lb loss! That is no small feat in a month.

    15 lbs a week?!?!? NO WAY! Ask your surgeon about that, no way they would agree with loosing 15 lbs a week.

    Well I had rny surgery and I read that it is norm to loose 5 to 15 lbs per week the first few months following surgery , so that is where my expectations came from . I am glad about losing 20 lbs but in the big scale of things was feeling discouraged since the 20 lbs was really only lost the first 2 and a half weeks then I have been stalled since not loosing anything in the last week and a half , basically since I started eating instead of drinking liquid only. Pre op diet start was 9/1 weight was 305 surgery date was 9/15 weight 294 and today 275. But again the 275 has been the same for 2 weeks now. I'm getting less then 1000 calories a day and walking a bit but not much as I have plantar fasciitis and am in pain .   25. Good morning! My surgery date is on the 21st and I’m trying to be prepared. I have all my Premiere Protein shakes. For water can we use crystal light? I also bought Premier protein bottles of water? Does anyone use collagen in their water? I take regularly now and it has protein so wonder if it’s an option to add PO. Thank you for any feedback it’s a week and I feel like everything is running through my head to be prepared. Any PO additional things you know of that maybe I’m just forgetting. Thank you!
