Question: has anyone ever had bariatric surgery while they had braces on their teeth? I'm at the end of my journey with braces (hopefully get them off next month), but I have surgery scheduled for July 13th. I am just wondering if it could cause me to have to postpone surgery if I still have them on in July. Thanks! Sent from my SM-G950U using BariatricPal mobile app

I just saw that they have multivitamin patches in the Bariatric Pal store. Has anyone tried these yet? Taking my supplements is my least favorite part of my day.

I don't know if there's a more current thread for AA sleevers/bypassers but I figured I'd say hello. I am Day 3 of my pre-op diet. Surgery Day May 15th. I grew up on specific types of food so i'm looking for support and even more bariatric friendly versions of AA Soul Food.

I'm a horrible example to use right now, but once I get my labs balanced, I'm taking Bariatric Fusion co. mplete multivitamin and mineral supplemen chewables for gastric bypass and sleeve patients. Read many, many reviews and these have excellent reviews. Many who had been getting bad labs, after being on these six months, were back in balance and stayed there. I think they taste good, have to chew 4 day. I have the mixed berry flavor. Just got iron infusion, taking Vit B12 injections and Vit D. My hematologist said these are excellent vitamins, made expressly for us. Most patients said they don't take anything else. I'm going to add some Biotin, as I am having hair issues. Also, committed to getting my labs done every six months and not letting it get out of hand again

If you are in Houston I have a superb bariatric RD who is very reasonable and also takes Medicare. She’s in the Med Ctr. Also I’m with a university practice group. They excel at aftercare. -
HELP! 7 YR POST OP WASTING BAD LABS HOW TO RECOVER?

Allie, thank you for your comments. I forced myself to get to the store, and get some peanut butter, bananas, and whole milk. I think without realizing what I was doing, I have literally been starving myself. If you do that long enough, you don't have an appetite. I was thinking of myself pre-bypass and counting calories that way not to regain. Dumb!!! I was probably absorbing about 600-700 calories a day. Since I live alone, have no one to cook for, and don't have anyone helping me stay on track. Also, have been very upset over a failed romantic relationship. Recipe for disaster!! Depression can lead to appetite loss and lack of motivation. As the hematologist and I discussed, I think I'm in the perfect storm. Horrible labs, depression, feelings of isolation. I have no family or friends that are close to me, only social acquaintances. Lost both husband and only son, who committed suicide. Being a very strong willed person, was able to hold it together until the end of a very important relationship. That's when I just lost it, quit going out, quit eating. I'm trying to get back on track, move downtown, where I can be close to my church, Lakewood, Joel Osteen's ministry. My church family is much more supportive than my family, which is basically 0. I need to be closer to the church, as I live nearly an hour away. The people that go that are the type that will take care of me. I really need that, both emotionally and physically. I also plan to move into a downtown loft, which are mainly young people. I am energized by them and act like a fool with them. I am responsible for so much of this. I got lazy and quit doing my labs regularly. I may have to take b12 injections for quite a while. The hematologist said I will probably need iron infusions once a year or so. So, it's going to be a slow process My labs are not bad enough right now to be admitted to the hospital. There's no way I could self pay. I tried to get admitted through ER, but they said my labs weren't bad enough. Going to look for a good bariatric RD Monday. I saw there's one not far from me. Going to make sure I tell them I'm 7 yrs postop - very different from a newbie still needing to lose weight. I agree, I need more than 60 grams of protein -- going to try to get at least 100 in. I really, really appreciate everyone's support. I was feeling pretty down and isolated. Been praying all day and feel a bit better - prayed I could get to the store and I did. Drinking shake I made right now. -
Sleeve gastrectomy after a hysterectomy...
Sheribear68 replied to JoniR's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
1. Gestational diabetes at the age of 28 with child #2 in 1997 (also my last pregnancy). Gained 96 pounds during that pregnancy and lost 12 so by the time it was all said and done, I was carrying an excess of 80 pounds more that. Would. Not. Stay. Off. 2. Triple negative breast cancer diagnosis in 2009 at the age of 40. Mandatory year of chemo/radiation which completely finished wrecking what little metabolism I had left that the gestational diabetes didn’t wreck. Gained 15 pounds during that year that. Would. Not. Stay. Off. 3. Hysterectomy in 2014 because of complications due to chemo-induced menopause at the age of 40. And at the age of 41. And just for fun, again at the age of 44. Went through menopause 3 times. Gained another 10-15 pounds that. Would. Not. Stay. Off. 4. Bariatric surgery in February 2019 after 21+ years of fighting a losing battle with metabolic syndrome caused by all of the aforementioned issues and yo-yo dieting. When I was 28 and got pregnant with my daughter I was about 140 pounds and a size 8. When I started the bariatric process at the age of 49, I was 259 pounds and a size 20/22. Throughout my years of yo-yoing, I’ve always been a SLOW loser. I was the girl who would diet/exercise for 4-6 weeks before even 5-6 pounds would come off. Then after it would finally start to come off, I could count on losing about 6 pounds/month eating 1200 calories daily and exercising like a maniac. Then the instant I would stop that brutal routine, the weight would insta- jump back on. Since my surgery date on February 6th (where I weighed 244 pounds) I’ve lost 46 pounds. Honestly it’s been “slow and steady”. Besides the first 2 weeks, I’ve not had a single week where I’ve lost over 3 pounds, but I’ve also not had a single week where I’ve lost under 2 pounds. So if I can lose weight with my history, honestly anyone can -
My bariatric dietician recommended Pre-Natal vitamins before my surgery and that's what I have been taking except for the first 14 days Post-Surgery when they insisted I grind everything up. When you have dentures you can't really chew chewables, and they are Nasty Nasty! First time I tasted them all I could think of was giving my babies liquid vitamins and then having them barf all over me. Same evil odors to those things. So at 15 days, I said Frustr8 Old Girl, this IS NOT going to continue! Took a mouthful, okay baby mouthful of 2 ounces, of liquid, three my prenatal in and let it float down as I swallowed. Oh I got some amused states at Wally World going through the vitamins area. One of my ex-coworkers who is now in Over the Counter Pharmacy said " You're 72, do you have something to tell me?" No this was Roy the Dietician's idea, not mine! But until recently it did me good, then after the 3 month TPN through my PICC line I got deficient enough in iron to require an iron INFUSION. Still wasn't as bad as It sounds, I was comfy, took 5-6 hours out of my day, but still it was what it was. Maybe it will hold me for a while, PCP thinks every 3 months, but he didn't order it, it was ordered by my surgeon,in Columbus and that's where I ended up going. So Spring Valley from W-Mart, about $9 a bottle, non-chewy, non-gummies, because 1st ingredient is Sugar or High Fructose Corn Syrup and that's a 👿😈Devil we all need to avoid!😎😨

Toilet visits and other niggles
Frustr8 replied to Spitting image's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
If your urine is dark golden or light brown and starting to get a smell to it, flood yourself with fluid, 2 oz every 15 minutes, that's 8 ounces an hour, 64 in 8, as a person who has herself gone through dehydration, took 2 bags-full the last time, because I got "bull-headed", talk about cutting your nose off to spite your face! Anyway people, and especially bariatric patients, do better on Fluid Drive. Popsicle yourself if necessary but get that fluid count up!!! -

thanks everyone for your input, I think I'm getting info to help. Will look for experienced bariatric RD that treats long term post op patients. I know I need therapy, but that's the second and long term solution. I can't even get to the therapy right now. I'm so unfocused and anxious, wouldn't even be able to listen. Scientific research and physicians shows Transendental Medititation works (even my hematologist does it herself) for Type A hypercreative personalities, like me, and is great for anxiety, depression, ADHD, etc. I plan to take the 2 day TM course, as soon as I get to feeling better and can get to the school downtown and stay focused enough to do it twice daily 20 mins a day. As my hematologist told me I am intelligent, analytical, logical, but hypercreative. My underlying health issues are magnifying all of these great qualities, turning them into negative right now. She's the best free therapist I've ever seen, and yes I have been to therapy many times. She said especially when I m in a hypercreative state, mimics many other mental illnesses, which she definitely says I am not. Even my psychiatrist told me I was the sanest person he had ever treated, and he loved talking to me for at least 30 mins...about himself. He spent about 5 mins with his other patients because he hated treating crazy people. I got to the root cause, his Indian father made him go into that specialty, thought he could make the most money...sad. -

Google bariatric dietician in your area and start there. When you find one, talk on the phone for initial interview. If they can't help ask for a referral to someone specialized in this. But get a counselor!!! I don't know where you need to start with food. You could seriously injure yourself with refeeding too quickly in the wrong way. Depends on just how badly you've been restricting food. -

Violet P replied to Violet P's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I tried that....said labs weren't bad enough to get admitted. I think I need a Registered Bariatric DIetician, who is familiar with long term bypass patients with my specific issues. My surgeon's office only has RD that does postop patients one year out trying to lose weight!! Has no clue about one like me losing too much and my age. She handles those who are regaining. They consider me a great success story!! Well, I am at losing the weight and keeping it off. I'd like to be a success story at regaining my health in the most realistic way I can right now. What food's should I try to eat...will liquids work until I can get an appetite back? I had this happen one time before, but was going out to eat a lot, so was getting many more calories, even though small amounts. Since I don't cook have been buying frozen foods but yuck! And they contain so few calories. They are great for someone trying to lose weight. -

That would be me, I have my son(40) still living with me, the last. hospitalization I had, after having both kinds of pneumonia immunizations, I still caught a variety. At that point, they brought me Crystal lite, the,non- caffeine variety. Pureed carrots, very small dish of pureed turkey with fat-free gravy in an adjoining small bowl , sugar-free strawberry Jello and a 4 oz juice glass of skim milk. For breakfast I got cream of rice, skim milk and Crystal lite. Surely if my inept local hospital ( called derisively by Columbus Hospitals "the Band-Aid Station") had a dietician who could figure it out, I am sure LTF (long term facilities) could keep me from starving. Eventually my local will be adding Bariatric Clinic and Surgery, basically VSG, in Spring- Summer 2020, but I couldn't wait on them with my weight 365 pounds and rising, trying to lose on my own for over 3 years, and Phenteramine made me GAIN 30 pounds in a month, I was to the point of Surgery or not making it to 75 alive. Oh it was not a flippant decision I made, but I realized I feared major surgery less than merely continuing to exist. And there is No One Else my age current on here, most have given up and died. I am my surgeon's Oldest Patient so it behooves Me to Heal as well as possible to prove the Nay-Sayers wrong. Lost 140 since highest weight, 93 ( I weighed myself today) since surgery 8 months ago tomorrow, my clinic forecasts I will break into Onderland ( under 200) on or slightly after my 1st Anniversary and that is despite 3 months of Total Parentel Feedings through my Upper left arm's PUCC line, without the artifially high calorie count (1403 calories daily) I might have made it there already. Never count me out, the REST of my days will be the BEST of my days. -

Oh, just remembered. was told by experienced bariatric surgeon that did my revision to keep my protein uptake at 60 grams daily, low sugar to prevent dumping. I tolerate sugar fine, only one episode years ago, ate way too much at Christmas. I'm drinking Premier Protein Shakes, can get them down and they taste okay to me. Wonder if I should add a glass of full fat milk daily, I might could get it down, if I split it up. I try to eat a few bites of full fat cottage cheese. I can't even get down a small frozen meal, such as Atkins, etc. Tried this morning, ate about 4 bites and spit it out. I know I need therapy, my husband died in 2014 from cancer, then my only son who was heroin addict in 2015, committed suicide 2015. I am overwhelmed with unresolved grief...but that can take years to solve I need help with getting the best nutrition to be focused enough and well enough to even drive to therapy. Get my drift? I need a registered dietician in bypass patients who are experiencing my specific condition, and take my health issues/age, and the fact I live alone, and find it even hard to get to store, etc. I'm overwhelmed to say the least. Just wanting first step. Getting medical care, but she really doesn't know best core diet to recover from this. -

You call your surgeon's office back and ask for a referral to their bariatric dietition (RD) and to a bariatric counselor. That's ALL you need at this point except you might need some home health care to help you!!! And you MUST make yourself eat. But anorexia is an underlying mental illness and must be treated in several modalities to be effective. Some of those include hospitalization. -

What does your primary care doc think? Have you checked in with your bariatric group lately? Maybe a visit with the dietician would be a good place to start. Sorry this is happening to you. -
My advice, go to a Center of Excellence Hospital that is also affiliated with a Medical University. I had my RNY at Ohio State University- Wexner Medical Center in Columbus Ohio, my surgeon was also the Chief of Bariatric Medicine and Metabolic Weight Loss. And I was 72 years and 8 months old, they took me when many others refused. Took me over 3 years from when I first started to seek it. YOu may have difficulties convincing the average Bariatric Surgeon to consider you , that's why I say Go High and Prove this isn't a casual thought on your part, RonnysGal found it worth it, but I'll warn you, if you do find someone, it will not be as easy a recovery as Surgery#1 and Surgery#2, we don't heal as well when we are in our late 60s and early 70s as these 20 and 30 year olds, oh we heal but it can be slow. Hey I wish you success in your search and if you do receive it, please update me, I am nearly your peer and am concerned for YOU!😛👍💥

I’m 7 weeks and I can usually get down 1 egg and a few soft vegetables for breakfast, and 2 ounces of meat for lunch and dinner. I have veggies then too but i’ve reconciled myself to the fact that those two ounces of vegetables are going to take me an hour to eat. And I’m determined to eat them because I need the fiber 😅. In between meals I drink the Bariwise hot chocolate or cappuccino and the Bariatric Choice drink concentrates, which i’ll happily evangelize about if you’re interested.

To tell or not to tell

I've been open about it at work. Coworkers who had it before me were open about having surgery and it made me feel more comfortable to seek it out knowing how our benefits would apply for bariatric surgery. I've had two coworkers who are thinking about weight loss surgery talk to me about it recently. Our benefits used to not cover it up until the last few years. I've only gotten one negative comment from a rail thin coworker who thinks our insurance should only cover it if you're near death. Most people have been supportive. I want my coworkers who are struggling with their weight to be comfortable seeking out and to know that insurance wise it is an option for them just like the people who have already had it before me at work. I've been open with friends and family as well. My mom had surgery at the end of February and was open about it and it made me feel less like I had failed for seeking out surgery. I personally choose to be open because I want to remove the stigma of surgery being a sign of failure or the easy way out. I want more people to view it as a valid tool and that we still have to put in the work pre and post op for it to work. But it's a personal choice to share and I don't think anyone should have to share if they don;t want to. -
I had incredible pain as well-- way more than i ever expected, and it was especially worse because any bariatric support groups i was looking at all talked about how it was basically pain free. Im on my 10th day from the surgery (i also had a hiatal hernia repaired), and really only in the last 2 days have i felt able to sit up at a 90 degree angle or move around without much pain. Today is the first day i can bend down, and i cant even do it fully yet. But each day got less painful, i do remember that! I was only in the hospital one night, but i really do think the beds make it worse. I also live alone. Sent from my LM-V405 using BariatricPal mobile app
