    Is it Worth it?

Well, I can help you with some of that. Though everyone is different there isn't usually pain for upwards of a month. I am 2 weeks post op and doing pretty much everything I normally due and even sleep on my stomach. Unless you have GERD or already have reflux most people don't just experience heartburn unless they do something to cause it and most Drs. will prescribe an acid reducer for at least the first month. Now, the food part I would suggest seeking some therapy if that is a major concern to you. You have to make the decision if changing your eating habits, hair loss (which may or may not happen and if it does hair grows back) NSAIDs etc. if all of those things outweigh the desire to lose weight and be healthy then the surgery is not for you. But, right now it seems you are dwelling on a lot of possibilities that might not even occur.

    Is it Worth it?

The pain for upwards of month after, not being able to tolerate food or foods that I enjoy, diarrhea, vomiting, heartburn, no alcohol for 6 months to a year, no nsaids, potential gallstones, hernia , hair loss to name a few.

    Surgeon Disappointed ๐Ÿ˜ž

That's about what I lost the first month. My surgeon told me that people either lose incredibly quickly and their weight loss slows after about 6 months or stops, or they're slow and steady and they will lose up to 18 months or 2 years after surgery. People are one way or the other and you can't really control it by eating or exercise that's just how it goes.

    Surgeon Disappointed ๐Ÿ˜ž

That is ridiculous and unrealistic! The average expected weight loss is 2-4 lbs a week.

    slowwwww weight loss

At a starting weight of 216lb your weight loss is going to be lower and slower than someone whose starting weight was much higher. What is your height? Are you exercising? What exercise are you doing? How many calories are you consuming a day now? How much protein do you eat daily? Carbs? Do you drink alcohol? Do you do a lot of incidental activity? Getting plenty of fluids? All this (and others) factor into your weight loss patterns, we are all different and lose weight differently. If you are able answer these though, I am sure you will get some very helpful suggestions regarding weight loss. Has your dietician or surgeon made any suggestions for you?
  6. I had surgery May 04, 2021. I am 10 weeks out and have not lost a lb in several weeks and am only 26 lbs down total. I started at 216 and I was a very restrictive eater before surgery had been for years. Never ate over 1500 calories a day. Very insulin resistant. Any one else have this type of issue? Did I waste my money even doing this? I just feel defeated at the moment watching everyone else have success.
  7. First, gotta ask: what does โ€œfish toshingโ€ mean? I quickly googled it and couldnโ€™t find a suitable answerโ€ฆ Second: re: getting back to basicsโ€ฆagree with most up there about figuring out how many cals you are taking in (log, if you arenโ€™t already) and cut a couple hundred cals from that. Skipping the wine will likely achieve this, but if you are not keen on doing that, cut the cals from somewhere else. I will say you still look fab to me, even with the extra 25lbsโ€ฆ.but I get how YOU want to think that about yourselfโ€ฆso if you want to drop a few lbs, cutting your cals is the obvious first step. (and drink lots of water, get a good nightโ€™s sleep and save the wine or desserts for special occasions or maybe just Tuesdays, lol) Other โ€œtricksโ€ of the trade if you like โ€œrulesโ€: dont eat past 7 (and/or before noon)โ€ฆnaturally reduces daily intake. Wait at 30 mins as soon as you get the urge to eat/snack somethingโ€ฆyou may change your mind. If you still want it after 30 mins, then by all means, go for it. May not be your cup of tea, but you can try. Iโ€™ll also echo what catwoman mentioned about slower weight loss being at โ€œnormalโ€ BMI. It may get discouraging, but so long as you are at a calorie deficit (barring any medical or genetic issues) you will lose weight. Good luck! โค๏ธ
  8. I had surgery in my 50s and wish I'd done it earlier so I wouldn't have spent most of my life morbidly obese. gallbladder - as someone else said, some people have gallbladder issues and need it removed even if they DON'T have weight loss surgery - and I honestly don't know how many people who've had WLS end up needing their gall bladders removed. Some - but I don't think it's a majority. Years ago many surgeons used to take people's gallbladders out as part of the WLS, but they don't do that anymore because a lot of patients never end up having gallbladder issues.

    FIVE MONTHS OUT

As far as being hungry. I'm not. I'm never hungry but I am thankful there are a few things I am able to eat just for the nutrition. I'm still eating a little tuna but since the bacon flavor has returned I'm really pleased to have it. I eat bacon and lettuce sandwiches on whole wheat bread with no condiments. Tomatoes still taste off and I loved them like crazy before. I eat a few mashed potatoes, the Bob Evans kind you get in the store prepared. Green beans taste good. The wife fixes them with a little butter and onions and cooks them a long time. Most raw fruits and veggies taste OK. Again, I am never hungry. I haven't been hungry since Feb. 15, the date of my surgery. I used to drink at least 5 20 ounce bottles of water a day. It's all I ever drank. It doesn't taste bad now but did in the beginning. I struggle to get the 64 ounces of fluid but I'm trying. The taste aversion happens to almost everyone. It's the one thing they're not very forthcoming about before surgery. That's why they stress protien. They don't tell you, "Every bite of meat you put in your mouth after surgery is going to be disgusting." Instead, the dieticians stress protien. So, get it any way you can until your tastes come back. Enjoy having no hunger. The taste aversion aids weight loss so just eat for nutrition purposes and enjoy the weight loss.
  10. It's been 3 weeks since my bypass surgery. I was told I had to have bypass surgery due to Severe Acid Reflux. I also had a high BMI of 44, Sleep Apnea, Severe Asthma, Severe Incontinence, High Blood Pressure, when dieting used several medicines and weight loss programs would loose 15 lbs at most and gain more back. At first I said would not do it again due to throwing everything up that I drank or ate. Not been able to eat or drink much of anything. I lied though it is worth it all. I am hungry and then when I eat I get full very quickly. I am holding on to the fact I am hoping I loose the weight that they say I will which they think 80 to 100 lbs. I am hoping it is the later of the two. I can say positively my asthma is so much better, my Sleep Apnea is better not using machine and not snoring, my Incontinence is a ton better so far. So yes do it, medically I say do it. Just to lose weight no. Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app

    A couple of questions

I am only 3 weeks out. My hair seems to be the same as it was. Make your own schedule you want 6 small meals so put them equally apart. Force yourself to drink I am having trouble drinking. I loved water I hate it now. Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app
  14. My last appointment is in October and just was seeing if there was anyone else out there have there last appointment coming up.
  15. It's time.

    A couple of questions

I had terrible hair loss so started maintenance early. Now I'm struggling to get back on program. I wish I'd stayed on program but was freaked out and didn't know how long the hair loss would last. It was severe and lasted 7 months. I'm older so my hair doesn't grow very fast anymore.
  16. Sorry to say, but no skin care product is going to keep you from hanging skin after massive weight loss. Genetics, amount of time spent overweight, and amount of weight to lose are all factors. If you are young, have good skin elasticity, and havenโ€™t been overweight very long you may not need PS. If youโ€™re older, have poor skin elasticity, were significantly overweight, or overweight for many years you will likely have loose skin. I had my sleeve surgery at 49, was overweight for most of my adult life. After losing 140 lbs I had lots of loose skin. I had a tummy tuck, breast lift & augmentation, and arm lift in January. Iโ€™m planning on a thigh lift next year. Iโ€™m so glad I had these surgeries, but even if I hadnโ€™t would still be glad to have lost all the weight.
  17. I would really love to hear some success stories of people who had a revision from the slave to the mini gastric or gastric bypass and had success. Personally, I am totally willing to go through a revision and all that comes with it but not for a 30 pound weight loss and Iโ€™m getting a lot of mixed information. Whatโ€™s your success story? Would you share some pictures of your revision starting weight self and where youโ€™re at now? I could really use some encouragement because Iโ€™m not sure if I should believe all the surgeons Iโ€™ve been talking to!

6 Weeks Post Sadi Op Journey

To provide an update now that it has been 4 and a half months since the surgery, I have lost a total of 75 pounds, 62 post surgery. I have been really happy with the steady loss. I eat between 690 and 730 calories a day now and make sure I get between 65 and 90 grams of protein. I try to keep my net carbs to 30 and under but it sometimes can go up to 35. I still only manage about 1.5 liters of water on average and make sure I keep up with my vitamins. My doc said I could start eating rice, pasta and bread at the three month mark if I wanted to, but I donโ€™t react well to those foods normally so decided to not reintroduce them yet until I reach the maintenance phase. I have no regrets and love that I can walk into almost any shop now and buy clothes off the rack. Iโ€™ve lost over a 100 centimeters and dropped 4 to 5 dress sizes (currently in between sizes at the moment, which is always challenging). my fitness has greatly improved and can hike steep hills without puffing my lungs out and stopping along the way. If you are thinking of taking the bariatric leap, I highly recommend it ๐Ÿ˜Š
  19. I am now 5 months from surgery. I've had horrible food aversions but some of that is easing. I can now eat bacon again. Before, it was disgusting. The same can be said of a few other foods. I'd love to be able to tolerate chicken but it's still off the menu. I am taking tasteless GENEPRO twice a day, 60 grams to keep my protien up and it is giving me some strength back. Also, I've switched to a 1 a day bariatric vitamin. Weight loss as of now is 118 pounds and my goal is 210 pounds. Hope this encourages some who are struggling. Stick with it.
  20. TL;DR What skin care products and procedures should I use in the months after surgery to avoid having huge amounts of excess skin that may compel me to get plastic surgery? I'm a large man who had Gastric Bypass Surgery 20 days ago. Everything is going better than I hoped, both in terms of weight loss and tolerating food. That said, I use a mental picture of myself in a couple of years to motivate me, and that mental picture is incompatible with the images of people with massive excess skin that I have seen. I'd feel compelled to seek out plastic surgery in that case (and given my weight history and the amount I am losing, it would appear that I have a higher than average chance of ending up in that situation). What products and procedures does this forum recommend to reduce the likelihood of having significant excess skin when my weight loss is complete? I'm currently under the impression that in addition to the aggressive strength training that I already planed, I should use Retinol and Hyaluronic Acid Topically, aggressively exfoliate, and ingest collagen and vitamin C and perhaps CoQ10. Are there significant changes I should make to this list or products that the forum has found to be effective? Thanks!
  21. Hi Dan. You're a great husband being so supportive of your wife. She's definitely blessed to have you. I am currently 11 days post-op from my gastric sleeve. I have been living with bipolar II for many years, and I have continued to take my meds as scheduled. I talked with my psychiatrist prior to surgery to ask her if any changes would need to be made, and she gave me tips on my different medications. One she switched to a dissolves-in-the-mouth form, which helps a lot since it is a difficult pill to get down after surgery. As someone stated above, the malabsorption issues tend to happen with bypass more than sleeve. One of the reasons I leaned toward the sleeve instead of bypass is for that very reason. I've been stable on my meds for some time now, and I didn't want to risk throwing myself off. Something to remember too, is that as weight loss occurs, sometimes doses need to change (often go lower) to work with our new weight. So, as long as your wife and yourself keep that in mind too, it will help to know if maybe something needs adjusting in time. As for the immediate depression that people sometimes feel, I had that. The first week following my surgery I sat there feeling low and asking myself, "Why did I do this to myself?" I was in pain and had very little energy, so I just felt like I had made a huge mistake. However, prior to surgery, I had read that type of depression can occur. Therefore, I just tried my best to keep telling myself it is only temporary. Sure enough, now as the pain has significantly subsided and my energy is going back up, I feel much better. I would say, being prepared for those ups and downs are one of the biggest aides in our recovery. It helped me to know it was something common that many people experience, and also that it was only temporary. Well wishes to your wife on her new journey!

    July 2021 Surgery People!

Hi everyone! Just checking in five days post op. I've been feeling pretty good! My 3rd day after surgery was the turning point when I started feeling better. I think that was when all the surgery meds were out of my system. The nausea went away at that point and I didn't have any real pain just a little discomfort. I have been doing fine getting my water in, and today is the first day that I think I'll be able to do all of my protein shakes. I am also allowed to have some pureed food. I had a few ounces of pureed cream soup two days ago and it was good. Yesterday I tried pureed refried beans and those were satisfying. I haven't had any problems with my sleeve hurting when I eat or drink. I am pretty cautious in my sip/bite sizes, probably from my years of terrible experiences with my lap band. I had no interest in food whatsoever for the first few days after my band, and I really haven't felt hunger yet. I have noticed myself paying more attention to some foods on advertisements or when I am cooking and serving my children their meals. But overall it has been very easy to control. I think part of it is knowing that I can have any food I want eventually in small amounts at some point in the future. That makes me feel less obsessive about it. This week I want to work on getting my calories up a little bit. I think I've only been around 200- 300 calories a day, and I had a dream last night where my hair was falling out, so I think my body is telling me to get a little more nutrition in there. My main issue now is a lack of a BM. I hadn't had one for at least a few days before surgery and I haven't had any since then so that's like seven or eight days. I've been taking Miralax since before surgery and every day since then, so I don't think it is a water issue. I think I have motility issues with my actual intestines, and I'm sure the tiny amounts that I'm eating aren't helping that. I'm feeling a little bit bloated but not any pains. I probably will call my doctor on Monday and see if I need to add some sort of fiber supplement to help. Anyway things are good so far. I hope everybody else who still recuperating is doing well, and good luck to those of you who are having surgery this week!

    Low start bmi โ€ฆ

I had a BMI of 35, i am about 4.5 months out and I have lost 45 pounds total (counting pre op). The weight loss now seems to have slowed to a crawl but it is still going down.

    Surgeon Disappointed ๐Ÿ˜ž

there's no average. Most people seem to lose in the 15-25 range the first month, although I don't have any hardcore research to back that up - it's just what I've observed after spending the last seven years participating on this and other bariatric forums. So your loss is totally normal, and your surgeon is an idiot. I lost 16 lbs the first month, and I went on to lose over 200 lbs. Some people lose slower or faster than others depending on a lot of factors, some of which you have little to no control over (like genetics, age, gender, starting BMI, etc). You DO have control over your activity level and how closely you follow your program, so if you do well with those and your overall weight trend is down (even if slow), then you're fine. P.S. that 15-25 range I mentioned - of course you'll always find people who fall on either side of that, but they're outliers. You are doing just fine!

    Surgeon Disappointed ๐Ÿ˜ž

I agree with everyone else, 21lbs in 4 weeks is great! At my actual check in I had lost less than that (14lbs total) because I hit a stall 2 weeks after surgery that lasted almost 3 weeks. My surgeon was still supportive and happy for me. Hopefully yours gets the stick out his butt and is more supportive in the future. You're doing awesome. Celebrate that loss and don't let his bad attitude get you down.
