    Keto diet

The oils I buy are olive, coconut, peanut, and real butter. Milk, yogurt, cottage cheese are all full fat. I plan on settling into a low carb lifestyle... not really full keto, but will aim for 65g/day. I've tried before, but feel my sleeve will make it possible.

    Sleeping on Stomach

It took me 3 weeks to be able to sleep on my stomach and about 4 to be able to do it comfortably. My back hurt so bad after surgery it was worse than the incision pain. As for pureed I did the ricotta bake, yogurt, pudding, lots of soups still, refried beans with a little low fat sour cream and salsa in the blender, tuna and egg salad.

Newbie to VSG, just starting my journey

April 11, 2017 ================================ 21 days post op. I feel basically back to normal now, have since about day 12. That's also when I hit my first stall. Fun! I lost 10 lbs in 10 days and then stalled. I know it's normal - I lost 20 lbs total in March between the pre-op and post-op very strict diets so it makes sense that my body would need a week or two to catch up and figure out what's happening. I'm trying to avoid the scale except for Friday weigh-ins. I feel lighter and my face and neck seem to definitely be the first place I'm losing. Which is nice because i wasn't a fan of my double chin and it's almost gone. I'm at about 41lbs gone total since starting this process. I just hope that when I hop on the scale Friday it shows some positive movement. Eating - I'm currently on purees until next Wednesday (my 1 month checkup), when I'll move to soft foods for a month - then I'm put on a "normal" diet with a few restrictions. So I've been using my blender/processor a lot. I skip that part sometimes and just chew really well but it doesn't do quite the same thing so sometimes I regret that. I haven't gotten sick yet (vomiting) and nothing I've tried has really gone down "wrong". The only time I feel uncomfortable is when I eat too much or too fast (or both!). I'm eating chicken, tuna, beans, guac, sour cream, melted cheese, ricotta, cottage cheese, yogurt, pudding, etc - all pureed/chewed to the consistency of pudding. I'm off red meats until at least 2 months out per my doc, bread until at least 4-6 months (if ever), and alcohol until further notice (my own restriction - it hit me hard before, I can only imagine how it would affect me now - plus alcoholism runs in my family and I figure why risk transferring my food addiction to alcohol!). Constipation hits every few days but usually eating some beans helps within a day but if not, I've been drinking a half cup of regular coffee and that always works (I'm not "supposed" to have caffeine but a half cup once or twice a week won't do much I'm sure - and I prefer that to taking a laxative!) I started back on the treadmill this week. Just 3 days a week, 20 - 25 mins for now. I have been doing all my regular daily routine stuff for about a week and except for getting tired (I'm only taking in 600 - 800 cals still) or having a little incision pain if I do too much, I feel pretty good. My incisions are all closed up and healing well, albeit ITCHY some days. One is almost invisible already! I have a few random stitches sticking out that bug me but I'm trying to leave them alone and let them work themselves out. I have been putting aquaphor on them daily to help them heal. Once they're completely healed i have some Bio Oil to use at night and I'm going to try coconut oil as well. Overall, I feel WAY better than I expected to at only 3 weeks out. Now if only the scale starts moving again...

    Chocolate cravings

I'm writing this while munching on a Dove dark chocolate heart to satisfy my sweet tooth. I'm 18 months post-op. It's that time of the month when chocolate feels like a biological need, haha. For me the cravings for sweets never went away, but I did find satisfying substitutions that I believe actually aided my progress rather than derailed it. In the past whenever I'd feel deprived on a diet I'd eventually cave in and binge on the danishes or ice cream I yearned for, but by having very small, reasonable desserts and snacks that have stayed within the goals I set, I've kept myself contented. During the liquid phase post-op my favorite protein powder was the chocolate one from Unjury. I added in unsweetened cocoa from Trader Joe's for extra chocolatey goodness sometimes. I also like having it with PB2 and iced coffee, or Torani sugar free syrups. I invested in a Nutribullet before surgery, and have really made use of it. I really liked the protein shake recipes on The World According to Eggface's blog, too, and recommend checking them out if you haven't yet. She's got a really winsome attitude and a lot of fun recipes for all stages. When I could start eating solids again I looked for sweets that were lower in carbs and sugar. One of my favorite desserts are the chocolate covered banana bites (Doles makes them, but the brand I like best is at Sprouts grocery stores) because they only have around 15 carbs for a four piece serving, and are just enough to be satisfied but won't derail progress. Trader Joe's also has slim Belgian chocolate bars that are only 100 calories and low in carbs. Other favorites from Trader Joe's are their macrons (three for 15 carbs), lemon bars (I think they're 10 carbs each), and Belgian waffles (big, fluffy, yummy and only 13 carbs!). Chia pudding, Siggi's yogurt, and smoothies made with high protein yogurt and frozen berries are also sweet enough to be enjoyable while still healthy. The cocoa sounds yummy. My main suggestion is to use something like MyFitnessPal to track everything you eat during the weight loss phase so you are really aware of how everything adds up. That way you can make adjustments to be able to add in sweets while still staying on track.

    Tired of eggs

I haven't had surgery yet, but I have had to follow a high protien diet for the last 3 months to be approved. I like Fage Greek yogurt, the passion fruit is my fav or strawberry. Also premier protein shake- Carmel flavor with some cold brew coffee, taste like a latte! I have also made these little breakfast muffin things, by putting a slice or two of deli ham in a muffin cup and pouring raw scrambled egg on top and a touch of cheddar. Bake for like 10 mins and store in fridge, then I reheat them in the morning for breakfast and I think they are like a carb free breakfast sandwich. Sorry I know it still has egg, but at least it's got other yummy stuff too!
  7. I went to couple Disney parks when I was 2 1/2 months out.I was able to eat salad, grilled chicken, shrimp.I did take some protein shakes to make sure I got my protein in.At Hotel had scrambled eggs and brought some of my greek yogurt. Most hotels have yogurt high in sugar.Just make sure you drink all day or you will dehydrate quickly.I know we hate to buy water but dehydrating is a lot worst..Most hotel have fridge and Microwaves so I would get some food I could eat and keep in fridge.

    Liquid Diet Struggles

I have been struggling as well. My surgery was 4/5/17 and I have been doing 2 shakes a day , I'll have 1/4 c of greek yogurt 2x's a day , jello (which I'm finding too sweet even though sugar free. Popsicles...all I know , I will be so happy to move to soft foods. By that time I'll have been on the liver reduction diet for 23 days. No one said this was going to be easy. I have been taking more naps , trying to wear off anesthesia, going for walks , contacting my support buddy ...7 more days before I see my doctor for first post op visit...
  9. I went to the Bahamas 4 months after my gastric Bypass and really was not able to eat much at all. For breakfast I had yogurt. Lunch was a problem, I had a couple bites of a salad. Dinner was an issue, I would take a bite of a piece of filet and it tasted so good, I would take another 3 bites, and then had to leave to through up. I was thankful after the first 2 days that I brought me protein bars. But everyone is different. I am 5 months at this point and still can only a limited amount of different foods and very small amounts of food that my stomach will tolerate.

    Ohioans?

Good question. I typically like to be totally left alone when I'm not feeling well. However, I did appreciate, over the first days, my husband being attentive to remind me I needed to try to eat, etc. and offering to bring me liquids, etc. I was glad I didn't have any real responsibilities over the next two weeks as I found myself needing to nap. I did go into work a couple of evenings for an hour or two and four days post-op felt fine to drive to Meijers so I could get a good walk in. I'm 58 and my kids are raised so I really didn't have to worry about household tasks, etc. I did find I needed encouragement as the first few days I was seriously wondering what I had gotten myself into. I was home alone the day after I got home. I had pre-purchased yogurts and lots of sugar free popsicles. Those were my go to items.

    Vacation tips

I am on vacation. I left about 9 days post op so my diet is pretty restricted. I took premier protein shakes, yogurt and cheese sticks to the parks every day (Disney) packed in ice packs along with my waters. I would say at your point, you would look for some low carb beef jerky (try nicks sticks on Amazon-70 calories, 9 gm protein and 5 sugars), weigh out some almonds and macadamia nuts and put them into baggies (I go to COSTCO and find the quality is good and the price is right, you just have to package them up). You can make Tuna or egg salad and pack the cooler, that way you feel like you are getting some REAL food. Don't rely on the rest stops, if you get lucky and find a great choice go for it, but at least you have your stuff packed and ready if there is nothing for you. I find the jerky (not that I can have it yet- but I was paleo for a bit) in the stores has lots of sugar, and the nuts are full of salt too.

Need list of high protein foods

Okios tastes good, but sends me to the toilet. Tastes are such an individual thing. I recommend spending 15 minutes in the yogurt section comparing brands. Those that say they contain live and active cultures will help with gut health. Maybe grab a handful of different small containers to do a taste test...

Need list of high protein foods

This is pretty spot on. My support nurse said baby food is for babies. For soft foods, meat is not an option unless it's super fine/chopped. The dannon triple zero Greek yogurt (oikios) has 15 grams of protein. I get most of my food protein from baked white fish (talapia and Cod are my favs). I am away and had salmon (3oz was my max) and had that several times but I made sure to CHEW it a long time before swallowing the white fish is definilty easier to chew into small pieces

@Clementine Sky Thank you for the yogurt ideas. I will check Siggi's website out. I haven't seen their brand or the Liberte on my grocery shelves, but that doesn't surprise me.
  16. I feel great! I just finished up 5 days in Disney World doing 8-12 hour days at tha parks, pushing 75 pound stroller. Lol. I did most rides except I pushed it a bit with the Big thunder Mountain, comes to an abrupt stop and I was a tiny bit sore. Day one after surgery I felt crappy. I had to be up by 5am for my surgery so I was definilty tired later in the day. I thought I would be up and walkin laps around the place (bc a few people I knew had been just after surgery). I was 2 hours post op and like I'm ready to go, let's walk!! And then 1/2 way down the hall I was like, ok let's go back. 😂 But every 2 hours (even overnight) I got up and walked, each time going further and more steady. I passed my swallow test with no problem and tolerated the water, protein shake and jello, so I wasn't out by 1:00 the next day. They said to catch up on my sleep on my first day home and then I could go to the gym and they wanted as much moving as possible. I don't go to the gym, but I used my eliptical every couple of hours for 5-15 minutes day one and then every couple of hours for 10-20 the next. That helped so much with the gas pain. My gas pain wasn't that bad and was totally gone by day 3. I did use a few gasX strips each day, but I'm not sure if it helped, but it couldn't hurt. I was driving by day 3, but sore and tired. Since I have kids I couldn't take the narcotics too much (driving, etc) but I took Tylenol during the day and the oxy at night for the first 2 nights home. I went back to work day 4, but my work pants hurt my incisions (yoga pants we so comfy that I didn't factor in a belt and sitting at a desk) so I only made it 3-4 hours. But day 7 I was back normally with no problems. My only complication so far was a wicked rash that formed on my abdomen. I took benedryl each night (again can't get doped up on meds when you've got kids depending on you). They weren't sure what was causing it, because it wasn't really around the incisions, lightly all over but heavy on my sides. But it started to get super itchy near the incisions and the glue was coming off (after 8-9 days) so I peeled it off and the next day the rash improved and after that nearly gone. So I'm thinking it was an allergic reaction to the glue they used OR from the stitches. Either way, if that's my worst complication I'll be blessed. It WAS hard to get my protein and water in those first 2 days, but I make it my business to get it in. I over pack stuff for work and travel just to be safe and I track EVERTHING on baritastic (app). That's the most user friendly app for me personally and has been a very valuable tool. As far as weight loss, I'm hopeful. I'm away now, and I have. Even perfect on my diet. I ordered shakes and had them delivered to the hotel along with some foods I can have (yogurt, cheese) but I will see tomorrow when I weigh in at my mother in laws house. One big thing I WAS NOT prepared for was the weight gain after surgery. I was UP about 6-8 pounds on my home scale the day I came home. This apparently is common bc they have you on IV from an hour or so before surgery until a few minutes before discharge (which for me, was about 30 hours straight. I lost that over the first 4-5 days and now I'm about 10 pounds down from surgery. Since pre-op (about 4 weeks ago) I'm down 20 But I FEEL good. I have energy. I already look visibly better in clothes. I'm starting to see my old shape I'm not sure if they work, but I take biotin pills (COSTCO) and vitamin patches (patchmd.com) calcium/Vit D, B-12 and multi vitamin, and biotin plus. I told my PA at the office and she said other patients had good results, so I'm hopeful and I think they are helping with my energy. I'm praying they keep my hair fro falling out, but I've read that it says futile lol Don't overpack for the hospital. Just comfy clothes to walk in (I'm not a fan of the gown. And comfy clothes for the car ride home (and a pillow to hold over your stomach for the ride home). Someone posted about dry mouth here and it was helpful. It's NO JOKE. I packed a dry mouth spray and that was good. You can't swallow, but 2 sprays was soaked up immediately in my dry mouth- yuk. I'm typing on my phone half asleep- so sorry if there are typos

    Low carb ideas

Siggi's Icelandic yogurt is the lowest flavored yogurt I've found, and to me it's quite good. I prefer having it as a snack or a dessert, but it's good for a quick breakfast since you can get it individual cups and just grab one and go. http://siggisdairy.com Liberte yogurt is low-carb in some flavors, like sweat cream. I've only found it at Whole Foods, though, and it's a bit overpriced. For breakfast I most often will make a smoothie using Trader Joe's brand of plain yogurt that has 23 grams of protein and 7 carbs (if memory serves) with some frozen berries and kale.

    Looking for your thoughts...

I'm also still in the full liquid pre op phase. My surgery date is April 19th. I think the thing I have struggled with the most during the liquids is that I'm tired of everything tasting "sweet". Protein shakes, Greek yogurt, jello, sugar free puddings...I'm also actually having a hard time getting in the 1000 calories per day that they want me to have. I am able to have some cottage cheese or one scrambled egg if I "need" it. Broth definitely helps but not very many calories in it. All in all, the liquid diet was not near as bad as I had thought it was going to be.

    Low carb ideas

For preop diet I had stuff like this... - Meatballs.. with egg and instead of bread crumbs using almond meal - String cheese, block cheese (cheddar mostly) - Almonds (ate too many of these and gave me hemorrhoids) - Peanuts (unsalted), peanut butter - Scrambled eggs with tbsp of ketchup or block cheese melted into it - Other ideas: - Peanut butter cookies using almond flour and stevia - Pizza using almond flour, block cheese, low carb meat sauce, and ground beef or other non processed meats - Take a cow home and gnaw on it for a bit My first week or so home post op I already have ready: - 1 percent milk (less fat no diff in carbs) - YOP yogurt drink (only until solids.. more carbs than I'd like) - unsweetned apple sauce (might add cinnamon if tolerable) - SF jello - ice cubes.. already like chewing them anyways - Duff Beer
  21. I have just completed the first week of my 2-week pre-op diet. The first and second day were hard. Then it got easy...... Protein shake for breakfast. Egg beaters and fat free cottage cheese omelet with grape tomatoes for lunch. Cup of fat free Greek yogurt and cup of fruit for snack. 3 ounces of tuna and 3 ounces of chicken with a can of green beans for dinner. Protein shake for after dinner snack. I'm full. I'm physically satisfied. I'm not physically hungry. I'm hovering around 1000 calories a day. So why can't I eat like this all the time, every day and "do it myself?" Why is it in the face of surgery that I'm so disciplined and careful and attentive? Could I just cancel surgery and hope that I could continue being this disciplined?

Great. I have never tried plain yogurt of any kind. What about Yoplait Greek 100?

    Low carb ideas

Most flavored yogurt probably is too high in sugar and carbs. At least I sure couldn't find any that were acceptable for me. So I went with the plain Greek, and I really had to dig around to find a low carb one of those too.
