Please forgive me for over stepping. But, I disagree. I don't think you should ask your regular Dr for nutrition advice for at least 6 months. They have no clue usually. You shouldn't be "getting any calories you can" you need ONLY very high protein foods. Instead of grits make a scrambled egg and put it in your nutri bullet of whatever blender you have. Or some Daisy cottage cheese. 1/2 cups has 10 or 12 grams of protein. The oikos yogurt drinks I listed before are tiny but full of protein. Your body is burning up all your fat for fuel. You don't need carbs, just protein and water. Calories right now are not needed really. You can do it. You are just going through an emotional and physical shock and it's hard to adjust, but you WILL. And you are going to be gorgeous.

First of all, congratulations!! How are you doing and feeling? That sounds so good. I've craving greek yogurt. I bought so many different protein powders and they all turn my stomach when I think about it. Yes!! I would love more recipes. Please? I hope you update your profile so I can learn more about you!

I am also newly sleeved (4/4). I have been doing a lot of smoothies that my nutritionist recommended. I seem to like the yogurt smoothies the best. The pre-mixed protein shakes I lived on during pre-op phase sound terrible to me now. For smoothie: Any container Greek 100 yogurt (sugar under 10) 1/2 c milk 1 scoop unflavored protein powder 1/4 c dry milk Half banana (or other fruit) It takes me half the day to get it down, but it tastes good. There are a few others I can share if you're interested, or Pinterest seems to have a lot of good ideas as well. Good Luck!

Hello, I had my surgery a week ago yesterday (4/5//17) so I'm brand spanking new. I am not very hungry at all and the thought of having a Protein Shake makes me want to gag. My doctor said that he just wants me to get at least one Protein shake (30 grams of protein) and fluids if that's all I can do. Any other protein options you can recommend. I can only have liquids. Soup? I bought a fresh squeezed juice yesterday consisting of beets, carrots, apple and ginger. I need something wholesome. It was very soothing to me. Don't know if I am allowed to have that but I didn't want to have anything. Also, my daughter has Cobani Yogurt drink that has 14 grams of protein and I liked it. The tanginess more specifically. Except it's high in sugar. Any suggestions? How soon after did you guys exercise? My doctor told me right away so on the third day, I gone on my spin bike for 15 minutes. Seems too soon though... Anyway, I would love to get to know you and be part of this community. I feel like a preschooler. I know nothing. So I'm willing to learn. Thank you!!
  5. I am one month post op and have pretty much only eaten cottage cheese, yogurt and fish...too afraid to try anything else...looking for some ideas for dinner...help

Try the oikos yogurts. They are so delicious!!! 10 G protein each. I have also seen the light regarding hunger. It's funny, I used to say, but I don't eat that much!! How am I fat?? I blamed my lupus meds and diabetes. Now I am remembering every time, I just casually walked past the pantry and stuffed an Oreo in my mouth. Or finished off the kids fried chicken so it wasn't wasted food. Or all the times I had "just a few bites" of the cake on the counter while I cleaned the kitchen. YES, I did eat that much!! I just did it without noticing.

aaak same here, sleeved 04/05 and I have dreams of eggs! Anything but these stupid protein shakes. Week 4 of this and I am feeling very sorry for myself as well. Good to know I am not alone. I don't like jello so I have Face 0% Greek yogurt and Fairlife 0% and flavorless protein powder. Also no sugar Popsicles and chicken broth. One day at the time @megh02

Hi, I wasn't either. Luckily I'm one of those crazy people that prepares for emergencies and one of my preps is this: https://smile.amazon.com/SurvivAMINO-Emergency-Substitute-Vitality-Sciences/dp/B00MAG75FU/ref=sr_1_10_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1492109292&sr=8-10&keywords=protein+tablets those shakes are disgusting! I am not taking 15 tabs (90 g of protein) I'm taking 9 a day instead. I don't need 90 g of protein!! Plus I bought these: http://www.oikosyogurt.com/products/yogurt-drink/strawberry they are amazing and taste so delicious and have 10g protein!!!! I will start those when I feel like "eating"

    Approved! 4/26/17

I am very lucky to not have a all liquid pre op diet. I give you props haha I have a protein shake for breakfast then a snack which is either a protein bar or Greek yogurt and then lunch is a protein shake and then I get another snack then for dinner it's 6 ounces of lean protein, 1 cup of cooked vegetables(2 cups if raw) and 1/2 cup of a starch then one more protein shake before bed if I'm hungry! Good luck though! The 26th will be here before we know it![emoji4][emoji4][emoji4]
  11. Yogurt. Cottage cheese. Hummus. Pudding. Repeat. Vegetables are making me sick. Which sucks because I would actually kill someone from a salad. Any suggestions?
  12. I am 6 weeks post-op and have noticed that meat doesn't taste good anymore. I have tried chicken several ways (kung pao, teriyaki, grilled) and fish (even with lemon and tartar sauce) and they don't taste right. I don't even want to eat them but feel I need to in order to get enough Protein in for the day. I know there are other sources of protein. Other things still taste the same to me (yogurt, eggs, cheese, iced tea). What the heck is going on?

    Pre-op diet. Need a buddie

I'm scheduled for 4/19 also and today is my first day of liquids. I appreciate any ideas for what I can have besides the broth, sugar free jello and popsicles. I'm meeting with the dietician in a few hours and will have to ask her about Greek yogurt and steamed veggies. Good luck everyone!!

    Protein & food

Trust me when I say that your body will let you know if you're eating too much. For me, I hiccup one time. Any bite/sip over that hiccup and I need to be finding a restroom fairly quickly. You definitely are not eating enough. What are you allowed during your soft foods stage? The only reason why I ask is because surgeons are so different when it comes to that. I am allowed pretty much any meat (except steak) and fruit and veggies as well. Chicken and other meats just need to be chewed really well... the first couple of times I literally counted to 30 with my chews and made sure not to take such a big bite. Protein shakes are really REALLY hard for me to stomach so I'll only drink them when I have a super tight restriction day... after I've tried to at least eat a yogurt. For breakfast: I have a Greek yogurt which has anything from 14-17 grams of protein in it. Every now and then I have chili from Wendy's because it I easy and cheap when I'm out and about and will usually give me 2-3 meals depending on how much I eat. Eggs w/ cheese is another good simple protein option. Peanut butter isn't on my list of okay foods so I cannot answer that question for you. Hope this helps.
  15. Just had my 1 week post op apt and I have been cleared for soft foods ahhh! Can't wait to have yogurt lol. While I saw my doctor I explained to him how everyday since I've been home immediately when I wake up I feel hot and dizzy and nauseas and very ill. Liquid Tylenol only made it worse so I waited and took the Percocet I was sent home with and I felt so much better! But then it turned into a cycle where in the morning I'd feel like **** and then by nighttime I was lively, no pain feeling food. He then explained that it was mostly likely side effects from the Percocet and to take pill Tylenol. The thing is is that I have never had that terrible side effect from Percocet although it's very common. Anyone else have this problem?? I am going to refrain for the day and see how I feel tomorrow morning [emoji855]

    Pre surgery diet.

I am on my diet for a month, so end of April I will see if I can get my date. My diet isn't so bad. It is lean meats and raw veggies and only 2 protein shakes for breakfast and lunch. I am allowed snacks like nuts, sugerfree jello and greek yogurt. It's not so bad, but I'm tired of chicken lol

    Pre-op diet. Need a buddie

I just finished the first week of my 2 week liquid diet. I survived...yay! It actually wasn't AS bad as I had originally anticipated. I have tried to eat things high in protein. I am allowed to have greek yogurt as long as it doesn't have any chunks and that was pretty helpful. Also a lot of Premier protein shakes! I have a "tasteless" protein powder that I have added to my "creamy" soups and that seems to give them a little boost. But I do agree with everyone about the popsicles. I found some that are sugar free tropical flavored that are pretty good. My surgery date is April 19th. Good luck to everyone!

    Healing quickly

I'm a week post op, and was sent home from the hospital on full purées. I'm still mostly just drinking water and protein drinks, with the occasional yogurt or applesauce; but that's really mostly because I'm nervous about trying anything else. I have my first follow up next week, at which they will probably move me to soft foods, so it sounds like your diet progression might be similar to mine. As others have said, every doctor is different. The most important thing in these early stages I think is to just follow the plan you were given. It sounds like you must have a good surgeon since you are feeling good and healing quickly!

    Keto diet

The oils I buy are olive, coconut, peanut, and real butter. Milk, yogurt, cottage cheese are all full fat. I plan on settling into a low carb lifestyle... not really full keto, but will aim for 65g/day. I've tried before, but feel my sleeve will make it possible.

    Sleeping on Stomach

It took me 3 weeks to be able to sleep on my stomach and about 4 to be able to do it comfortably. My back hurt so bad after surgery it was worse than the incision pain. As for pureed I did the ricotta bake, yogurt, pudding, lots of soups still, refried beans with a little low fat sour cream and salsa in the blender, tuna and egg salad.

Newbie to VSG, just starting my journey

April 11, 2017 ================================ 21 days post op. I feel basically back to normal now, have since about day 12. That's also when I hit my first stall. Fun! I lost 10 lbs in 10 days and then stalled. I know it's normal - I lost 20 lbs total in March between the pre-op and post-op very strict diets so it makes sense that my body would need a week or two to catch up and figure out what's happening. I'm trying to avoid the scale except for Friday weigh-ins. I feel lighter and my face and neck seem to definitely be the first place I'm losing. Which is nice because i wasn't a fan of my double chin and it's almost gone. I'm at about 41lbs gone total since starting this process. I just hope that when I hop on the scale Friday it shows some positive movement. Eating - I'm currently on purees until next Wednesday (my 1 month checkup), when I'll move to soft foods for a month - then I'm put on a "normal" diet with a few restrictions. So I've been using my blender/processor a lot. I skip that part sometimes and just chew really well but it doesn't do quite the same thing so sometimes I regret that. I haven't gotten sick yet (vomiting) and nothing I've tried has really gone down "wrong". The only time I feel uncomfortable is when I eat too much or too fast (or both!). I'm eating chicken, tuna, beans, guac, sour cream, melted cheese, ricotta, cottage cheese, yogurt, pudding, etc - all pureed/chewed to the consistency of pudding. I'm off red meats until at least 2 months out per my doc, bread until at least 4-6 months (if ever), and alcohol until further notice (my own restriction - it hit me hard before, I can only imagine how it would affect me now - plus alcoholism runs in my family and I figure why risk transferring my food addiction to alcohol!). Constipation hits every few days but usually eating some beans helps within a day but if not, I've been drinking a half cup of regular coffee and that always works (I'm not "supposed" to have caffeine but a half cup once or twice a week won't do much I'm sure - and I prefer that to taking a laxative!) I started back on the treadmill this week. Just 3 days a week, 20 - 25 mins for now. I have been doing all my regular daily routine stuff for about a week and except for getting tired (I'm only taking in 600 - 800 cals still) or having a little incision pain if I do too much, I feel pretty good. My incisions are all closed up and healing well, albeit ITCHY some days. One is almost invisible already! I have a few random stitches sticking out that bug me but I'm trying to leave them alone and let them work themselves out. I have been putting aquaphor on them daily to help them heal. Once they're completely healed i have some Bio Oil to use at night and I'm going to try coconut oil as well. Overall, I feel WAY better than I expected to at only 3 weeks out. Now if only the scale starts moving again...

    Chocolate cravings

I'm writing this while munching on a Dove dark chocolate heart to satisfy my sweet tooth. I'm 18 months post-op. It's that time of the month when chocolate feels like a biological need, haha. For me the cravings for sweets never went away, but I did find satisfying substitutions that I believe actually aided my progress rather than derailed it. In the past whenever I'd feel deprived on a diet I'd eventually cave in and binge on the danishes or ice cream I yearned for, but by having very small, reasonable desserts and snacks that have stayed within the goals I set, I've kept myself contented. During the liquid phase post-op my favorite protein powder was the chocolate one from Unjury. I added in unsweetened cocoa from Trader Joe's for extra chocolatey goodness sometimes. I also like having it with PB2 and iced coffee, or Torani sugar free syrups. I invested in a Nutribullet before surgery, and have really made use of it. I really liked the protein shake recipes on The World According to Eggface's blog, too, and recommend checking them out if you haven't yet. She's got a really winsome attitude and a lot of fun recipes for all stages. When I could start eating solids again I looked for sweets that were lower in carbs and sugar. One of my favorite desserts are the chocolate covered banana bites (Doles makes them, but the brand I like best is at Sprouts grocery stores) because they only have around 15 carbs for a four piece serving, and are just enough to be satisfied but won't derail progress. Trader Joe's also has slim Belgian chocolate bars that are only 100 calories and low in carbs. Other favorites from Trader Joe's are their macrons (three for 15 carbs), lemon bars (I think they're 10 carbs each), and Belgian waffles (big, fluffy, yummy and only 13 carbs!). Chia pudding, Siggi's yogurt, and smoothies made with high protein yogurt and frozen berries are also sweet enough to be enjoyable while still healthy. The cocoa sounds yummy. My main suggestion is to use something like MyFitnessPal to track everything you eat during the weight loss phase so you are really aware of how everything adds up. That way you can make adjustments to be able to add in sweets while still staying on track.
