    EEEEk!

BREEEEEEEEEATH, all is going to be fine. I got anxouis reading your post. Find a good book to read. You will not know any of those answers till you get done with surgery. Don't get yourself all worked up over the unknown. Think on the positive side. The surgery is a sucess and all the time of trying was leading up to this. You lose the weight you want and you get to become the person you are inside. You feel alive again. You can go and do things you were embarassed to do before. People tell you how great you look. Go on that thought pattern. Sound like you fought to hard and long with the insurance company to flake out now. Something inside you would not give up. Find that part of you again. YOU can do this.

    No longer a stranger

Oh my gosh, everything you said sounds like me, except of course the part about being athletic, being the life of the party (I am too shy) having a partner....well maybe it doesn't sound like me but the height, weight and age sound like me. I just found this site a few days ago and have been reading as much as I could. I am still on the fence about having surgery. I actually have it scheduled for Oct 31st and all I can think of is I am going to miss out on the after halloween candy sales. How sad is that? I don't have insurance and can't get it because of my weight so I am hoping that the $15,000 will be money well spent. Does anyone regret having it done? Vonnie

    I am an Addict

I soooo agree with seeing a therapist. I see one weekly and although I like her very much and it is always helpful to talk to somebody...she is NOT a WLS therapist and I am thinking I need to find one. She definitely encourages me to make the changes required to being banded, and making those changes habit but there lacks a certain weight to her words because she is not an "expert" in the field.
  4. well i have had fill and was so scared but was really surprized how simple it was and even though i really don't feel any restriction and still eating as usual and no weight loss , i am not going to let this get to me i know i just need another fill to get this right. i would rather have to little than too much, i wish i could tell you guys on how much weight i have lost but pray that once i get this fill stage right i will be on my way also. i had a large fill compared to others i had 2.6 cc and know i need more but i had that strange feeling of fullness when it was being done , so i know its in there and the feeling i will get when i get enough fill , i had the fill and went in to the doctor right on lunch time my tummy was growling with hunger as i hadn't eaten lunch yet and it completely stopped after my fill. (freaky) i was so glad just to know that my band was in there and the fill made a difference . i know it is trial and error and i would rather have to little than too much so i will return soon for fill 2 and hope this fill will stop me eating as much, i will let you know any results soon hopefully i will join all of you that tell your stories of how much you have lost !!
  5. What caught my eye in the abstract you posted, Sue, was the part about both groups being satisfied with their achieved weight loss, improved mobility, and improved self-esteem. Those things are all I care about. So what caused the researchers to call one group "good outcome" and one group "poor outcome?" They both had good outcomes in my book. The question I find interesting is what personality qualities would differentiate successful from unsuccessful bandsters when the measure of success is percentage of excess body weight lost. That would be a fascinating study. For example, I wonder whether a flexible person or a rigid person would do better? A flexible person might be able to adapt more quickly to eating in a different way. On the other hand, a rigid person might be more likely to stick to the bandster rules without deviation. Nancy

    I am an Addict

I am 38 years old and I am a food addict. The feel of the creme filled donut in my mouth, the crunch of KFC, and the comforting feel of chicken and dumplings, all of these things are what have made me decide that I need the Lap-band for help with my weight loss journey. As I get older you would think that I would make better choices for myself but I didn't until now. I am due to be banded in November 09 and I can't wait. Does anybody else have these same feelings or do I just need psychiatric help?

    help. realize or lapband

I was banded with the Realize band yesterday. My doctor told me there is virtually no difference between the two, and he showed me a stack of research and literature to back him up. Of course, every doctor has their own opinion and you have to trust your own doctor. My doctor gave me a choice of which band, and he gave me links to the website for each band. You can only access the detailed part of the websites if you have your doctor's access number. I chose the Realize band because it has a really good website with places to track your food diary, your weight, etc. But as far as I could see both bands really function the same.

    REVISION From band to bypass!

This is my plan too, just waiting for the consult with the doctor to discuss it. Hoping it works better long-term than my band. I got that in 2005 and lost a good amount of weight initially but gained quite a bit back after.
  9. Hubbie and I are going away this wk end and Hotel is doing supper and breakfast, I do not want to gain weight, but also don't want to be a party pooper. Any advice cheers

    All about you!

Once you lose that first thirty pounds, it becomes easier to believe that maybe just maybe this surgery thing is going to work. Most human beings are no damn good, and you will find this out post-op by the stupid things they say about your weight loss and the fact that you are achieving it with surgical intervention. But you won't really care, because you are starting to physically feel better, too. So, what the mean people are saying doesn't jive with what you are knowing and feeling. It becomes easier to speak up for yourself. You begin to realize what intense control people had over you because of your weight and shyness, and you don't like it. Kinda like, "I am mad as hell and I am not going to take this anymore!" It's ok to get mad, because once you get mad, you start to realize that there are other things you would rather think, do, say, eat, wear and watch on TV besides what others have had control over. You realize that since you now have control over your weight, you should have control over all of these other aspects of your life, too. Getting healthy not only re-sets your body systems, it re-sets your mind. Others around you may not like it that they are losing a chump that they could run over, but oh well. Happy, healthy, and "in charge" will be your new normal.

    Loose Skin

First and foremost is to not get fat in the first place, and second would be to get better parents - it's primarily a genetic thing. There are lots of potions and creams out there that purport to tighten loose skin, and some might actually do something in minor cases. The problem is, beyond the nature of the industry for cosmetics, nutritional supplements and other miracle cures, is that it is very difficult to validate the claims with any kind of double blind control testing. With all the personal variables involved, it's virtually impossible to get two groups of effectively identical people together to test the value of these products (assuming the manufacturers were so inclined, which they rarely are.) So, yes, we will find people who used this or that product and report a certain result. The problem is that they have no idea whether that product did anything at all versus having done nothing. Give it your best shot, use what seems to be the best product, and see how it goes. Losing more slowly has some merit, though the major difference would be in losing your weight over five years versus six months. The difference between getting to goal in ten months versus eight months would be insignificant. Some are naturally slower losers than others due to their metabolism; however, the danger in trying to lose more slowly by consuming more while losing is that you may never get all the weight off that you want to get off. Our overall metabolism (resting plus activities) will trend lower as we lose since we have progressively less weight to move around (the main exception being those who seriously ramp up their exercise as they progress - as in marathon training levels,) We go into weight maintenance when our consumption meets that declining metabolic burn, so we can end up short on our loss if we consume too much.

    My Story

What a great story...I love that your husband was 389 and now is 200 that's very inspiring for me, I'm the same starting weight now and going in next week for sleeve...glad to hear his success!
  13. I read a statistic that banded patients on an average, lose 55% of their excess body weight after 2 years. I've also read that gastric bypass patients have a window of opportunity to lose weight during an 18-24 month period. After that, the weight stops coming off. My question is this, can banded patients continue to lose weight after 2 years or does the weight loss stop like gastric bypass patients? I don't think I can go through surgery and accept a loss of 55% of my excess weight. Is there more hope than that? Thanks in advance if you can offer me some personal insight!
  14. I am 2 1/2 years post op. I lost 100lbs total and I was very happy about it. At about the 2 year mark, my OB Doctor started me on a hormone medication in an attempt to achieve pregnancy. This was unsuccessful, and caused me to gain about 25lbs in a two week period while taking it. The OB said it can be normal to gain weight while taking this, and some of it should go away once I stop. I haven't been taking it for about 3 months now and I have not lost a pound yet. My eating and exercise habits haven't changed at all. I am incredibly frustrated and depressed. I feel like a fool for "messing up" my weight loss journey in an attempt to have a baby that failed anyways. Has anyone had any similar issues that they may have any suggestions for me? I also have PCOS.

    flip flop

Hey there, I am also 'wondering" about it. I think I'm going ahead with it. Even being really good, the weight comes off so slowly, I get frustrated and ..well, eat how I like. I've been reading lots about it, too. Seems there is overwhelming positive about the band. Are you up to the challenge?

    No weight-loss

Is your liquid intake a lot of broth/bullion? these have a LOT of salt in them which will also make Water weight stay put. Make sure you are getting non-salty fluids in and are walking to help more the fluids out of your cells. This is a post-op phase and you will begin to loose soon.
  19. I'm a single mom. I had my son when I was 15, and had a tormultous relationship with his father. Wasted a lot of my life. Now I'm 34, my son is 19, I'm single, and hope to find true love and be married. I also would like to have at least 1 or 2 more children and have the even celebrated. I lost my left ovary due to having a dermoid tumor two years ago. My doc told me on Friday, that I may have a small one growing on my right ovary. I can't have sleeve surgery until next year this time. I've tried losing weight on my own to attract guys but losing weight is a bear as you all know. Once having the surgery I have to wait 12mths to get pregnant. I just have so many stressors right now, I'm afraid of how things are going. I don't want to lose my other ovary and my chances of having any more children. Sometimes I feel like I'm being punished for some things i did when I was younger. Why me???

  21. Hello everyone! My name is Anne. I'm 39 and was banded in Nov 2008. I was 255 before and now, I'm at my goal weight of 130. I wish all of you here the best of sucess in your journey to loose weight. It's so worth it in the end, to be healthy and happy once again.

    Hypothyroidism

It is a little soon to tell (yep we are now two meggies with (soon) sleeves, husbands named Michael, AND hypothyroidism!) but I lost 18 pounds on my two week liquid diet, and have lost 16 in the four weeks since surgery. I am thrilled with it as I too have always lost weight very slowly in the past- but I think I never really got how important the carb factor was and have stuck to that firmly since day one of my pre-op. I think that as long as we keep our levels good we will be ok- jmo. (ps you aren't by any chance left handed? now that might almost be eerie...)
  23. I was diagnosed with Hypothyroidism a few years ago and take Synthroid every day. My levels are stable, but because I have had trouble losing weight in the past, I was wondering if any of you have the same health problem. If so, were you able to lose much weight quickly after surgery? Or does this ailment prevent quick weight loss after surgery, as it can without surgery? I just wanna know what to expect. Any responses would be greatly appreciated.

    Can't wait...

Hello everyone my name is Brianna. I'm 20 years old and 277 pounds. I started a new job at a hospital as a patient care assistant where I take care of patients that have had surgery and one being the Lap Band surgery. Since I have been working there this memory of me wanting the Gastric Bypas surgery came into my mind...but then I thought to myself why not get the Lap Band since i'm still young. So now i'm in the process of working on my 6 month diet that my insurance requires, getting my doctors appts. set up, and all that other little stuff that is required before surgery. I'm soo excited to do things that me weight has stopped me from doing before. Such as playing a game like Basketball, or tennins, or anything that requires a lot of movement. Or going on rides that require you to be locked in..or there is this ride at the fair here in Columbus that there are little seats that dangle from this huge thing and when it's turned on all the chairs go around in this circle(hard to imagine if you haven't seen it before), but i have never been able to fit into it..and i would love to some time. I just want to be able to enjoy life...so..here i go..on a journey...:car:

Has any one had gout after surgery?

Ironically, I am pretty sure you would have to avoid high intakes of protein. This topic has me curious- my great toe has been hurting terribly for about a month now. It hurts like an ingrown nail but I had my roots cut years ago due to excessive ingrowns- I can bear weight but the toe hurts plenty- maybe I have gout?
