    Men are so frustrating!!!!

MY MAMA SAID...(God rest her soul, she's been gone almost 20 years) Anyway, Mama said that men do not want you to change. Subconsciously, they don't want you prettier, they want you less attractive to others. Over the years, I have...noticed...that she tended to be right, whether it was weight, a haircut, even clothing. Just saying, food for thought.
  2. Congratulations on starting this journey!! My mom was from the dayton area - miamisburg (go Vikings!) I am 53 yrs old, and had gastric bypass July 18. I'm doing well. My husband is hopeful for his surgery in December of this year. I think once you decide on having weight loss surgery, your mindset changes. It was so much easier to follow the plan laid out for me once my "eye was on the prize." Good luck to you!

    Stalls and weight gain

I weigh daily, morning and night and have for 15+ years (though I didn't while I gained all this weight in a years time). If that's what you prefer, eventually you will learn to understand the fluctuations and accept them for what they are. Experience is the teacher. Just stick with your plan and you'll succeed.

    Stalls and weight gain

I understand. We have all been through it and that is why we are all here, in some form or another. Don't panic, if you have a calorie deficit you WILL loose weight. Stalls and fluctuation are common and going to happen. Just follow your plan and keep chugging along and you will see the change.

    Stalls and weight gain

I always weigh myself in the morning, when I wake up. I guess I'm stressed because when I've tried to lose weight on my own, I always end up stalling and the gaining weight again after a few weeks, even if I'm still on a diet and writing down everything I eat. It's like my body adjusts super fast.

    Stalls and weight gain

You are going to drive yourself crazy if you track your weight to the gram daily. Weight gain or loss is not linear. Think about it: if you drink 16 ounces of water, that is zero calories, but until you excrete it through urine, sweat, etc., you will have gained a pound. Obviously, that is not the same thing as gaining a pound of fat from eating more calories than you’re burning. A lot of people only weigh themselves once per week (or less often), and you might want to consider that if seeing a temporary weight gain is going to upset you. If you can’t help checking more frequently than that, you could just record it once per week (no matter how many times you step on the scale) so you can see your long-term progress without the day-to-day fluctuations.

    Stalls and weight gain

It is not "weight gain" it is weight fluctuation. Like you said, people fluctuate. Yesterday, you may have been retaining less water. Today you might be retaining more. It really is best not to weigh yourself everyday, it will drive you mad. But, if you do. Try to weigh yourself at the same time everyday. I can and have gained 10 lbs from morning to evening because I was so swelled up and had so much water retention. I can visually see it in my ankles and legs. It doesn't really happen that drastically now that I have lost quite a bit of weight but it still happens.

    Stalls and weight gain

Today I gained weight for the second time since I had the gastric sleeve surgery three weeks ago. I was 700 grams heavier today than I was yesterday, or 1,5 pounds. Last time this happened was a week after the procedure, when I gained 400 grams one day (a little under a pound) and then the day after I weighed the same as I did two days before. I weigh myself every day, and have done for a long time. I realise that weight fluctuations can happen, but I'm still a little shaken that they can happen when I'm only eating a few hundred calories per day. Yesterday, I ate around 800 calories, which is about the highest I've gone. Usually, I'm around 4-500 and not really hitting my protein target. I am hitting my water targets, so I'm not dehydrated. According to the UCLA Center for human nutrition, most people need at least 1200 calories per day just to survive, and eating less than 1000 is essentially starvation. So how can I gain weight on what is essentially a starvation diet? I'm not working out a lot, but I walk to and from work every day..
  11. I carry MOST of my weight in my abdomen. So naturally I lost the most there, I have always had smaller legs and arms. last time I measured I was 3 months post op and had lost 16 or 17 inches in my waist alone but basically stayed the same within 1/2 inch every where else. My face has also changed a lot, you can see my jaw line now. (slightly, but it is still there) Anyway, overall definitely my stomach/waist.
  12. I am pre op but have lost over 60 lbs already. I was expecting to loose some face fat by now but pictures really haven’t shown a difference… however over the last year i have lost about 8” around my midsection and 2” on my chest and about 1/2” each of my thighs… where did you “loose first”? when did you start loosing the face fat/reduced chin and neck??
  13. Hi y’all. My original surgery was an RNY done on August 1, 2017, so 5 years post op now. Recently I’ve been having a very nasty acidic metallic type taste in my mouth every day. I’m being told that sounds like acid reflux. I’ve never had it before so don’t know. Since Covid and working at home full time and having all the bad for me foods within reach, I’ve put all my weight back on. I am so disgusted with myself!! But I am still at least trying to make an attempt at losing. My doctors have me on Metformin and Topomax. But they’re not doing anything. My health has went downhill quickly. And things with my health just keep getting worse!! I have an appointment with a different surgeon to speak about a revision and if I could be a candidate on September 15th What do you think my chances of being accepted into his program to get a revision are? My insurance covers but need 6 months of dietary visits. What should I expect on the initial visit with the surgeon on the 15th?
  14. I think I have an ulcer. I've had pain midway between my belly button and sternum (i think that's what it called) or breastbone. Whatever. Pain is worse when my pouch is empty and goes away for a bit after I eat and I have called the surgeon's office 3 times, its always she will call you back. Yeaaaa At this point they can kiss it where the sun don't shine. I left a message to my primary to see what she can do to help me out. I started taking Omeprazole (OTC) to help and low and behold no more pain or rumbling tummy. So symptoms are managed. Only thing I noticed is the weight loss has increased. I usually lose up to 3 lbs per week and it's about 1 lbs a day so that's a bit concerning. Not complaining but just a tad concerned. Anyone have an ulcer? How long did it take to heal?

    4 month stall

As mentioned above you probably are gaining muscle and muscle weighs more than fat. As long as something is moving (inches) then you ARE losing. If nothing moves at all then it would be maintenance, but I don't think you're there quite yet. I'd say not to stress about it, but I'm sure it's next to impossible not to.
  16. Biggest Change: I developed a wheat allergy after surgery (3% chance. They don't warn you) so learning to check every label for ingredients so as to not make myself sick has been a new experience in paranoia, and I have to cook every meal in my house because going out to eat is almost impossible when you have a wheat allergy. Biggest Surprise: My clothing size. When I was in the 180's when I was in middle school I was a size 16. That's what I expected to be. I'm a 12 in jeans and a medium in tops. That was a shock. A pleasant one. But a shock. Biggest Challenge: I have had a Trigeminal Neuralgia flare since April 2022 and was put on an anti-convulsant (Gabapentin) that caused me to gain 18 pounds. Now that I'm weaning myself off of it after being put on a different one (Oxcarbazepine) I've lost about half of the weight I gained, but am struggling to lose the other half. I stress out over that extra weight so much... Biggest Personal Victory: For me, it was getting out of the 'obese' category and being 'overweight' instead. I cried.

Those of you 1+ year post op….

The most interesting revelation in considering these questions is that WLS has not been the overwhelming consideration over the years. what’s been your biggest change? Seating. When travelling, airline seat size is no longer a consideration. When renting a car, seat size is no longer a consideration. Theater seat sizes are no longer a consideration. Restaurant seat or booth sizes are no longer an issue. Folding chairs are no longer fear inducing. what was the biggest surprise? I honestly don't recall any surprises. I had done crazy research before I decided on WLS, so there were no surprises related to surgery, the recovery, the diet, or anything. I wasn't concerned with the post-op diet because proteins were my favorite parts of meals. Can the biggest surprise being that there were no big surprises? biggest challenge? The one challenge I took seriously is that weight and dieting would not be the center of my life once I lost my weight. I was not going to be on a diet for the rest of my life. My surgeon's plan was basically that I started with my lifetime maintenance diet from day one. So, from day one I started building my lifetime habit so that by time I lost my excess weight my lifetime eating habits had been built into me. So my biggest challenge was anti-climatic, it was my new normal. Additionally, a major aspect of this is that I don't weigh at home. I only weigh at my annual physicals biggest personal victory? This is probably the easiest questions of the four. I ran 5 marathons, one of which was the San Francisco marathon where I got to run across the Golden Gate Bridge. I ran two Long Beach Marathons, which started and ended at the Queen Mary. One was the Surf City Marathon. So 4 marathons were on the Pacific Coast. The 5th was the Valley of Fire Marathon which was just outside of Las Vegas.

    Questions to Ask Before Surgery?

it's sleeve - there are different bougie sizes. But I'm not sure if all surgeons ask for your preference. there is one revision to bypass where they can bypass more of the small intestine for some additional weight loss- but that doesn't seem to be a very common form of revision. For a virgin surgery, I don't know that anyone ever asks for your preference...or I should say, at least I've never heard of that.

Thank you, yeah the scale not moving is what’s stressing me out. Gaining my thighs and butt back via exercise after losing them post VSG had been nice.

    4 month stall

Like you I went months without losing and I had to accept that I was not going to reach my second goal. My body was just happy where it was. The fact that you say you are losing inches though makes me think that maybe you should hang in there trying for a bit longer though and see if you are just gaining muscle weight. Losing inches is still losing. I was not exercising other than walking so that was for sure not what was going on for me but possibly what is happening for you. I would wait until I went months without losing on the scale or the measuring tape before I threw In the towel.
  21. Hi All, I had surgery 10 months ago and hit my 18 month goal at 6 months. However, since then I fluctuate 2+/- lbs for the last 4 months. I have lost 2 pants sizes, about 6 inches from my waist, and gained about 3 inches on my hips. I can’t get past 140/142 lbs on the scale. I have increased my protein, watched my carb intake, increased my exercise and still haven’t dropped past 140 lbs. has any had this happen? My dietician still hasn’t responded after multiple attempts of outreach.

    July 2022 peeps!

Hello! I just had VSG surgery on July 11th, so I guess that makes me 7 weeks post-op! I'm currently in the "Mashed Food" phase until September 12th when I can start "Easy to Chew Foods". I like that mashed food is a bit more like real food than liquid or pureed, but it still feels really limiting. I don't mind eating small portions, but everything I eat basically has to be refrigerated and I can't wait to get to a phase, maybe? where I can eat some convenience foods, aka throw something in my purse in case I get hungry or I need to eat and a restaurant doesn't have what I need. Anyway, you can see most of my details in my profile, but I can't fill out some of it, which is weird. I'm not pre-op obviously. Oh I know...I lost 30 lbs prepping for surgery by walking, eating smaller portions and practicing the 30 minute waiting and such, oh and more water and no diet soda. Since my surgery I've lost another 35 in the last 7 weeks, I'd say that's not bad! My most recent bariatric nurse appointment was positive and she said that I'm ahead of the curve. I think I'm losing weight faster because I'm absolutely horrified by vomiting and I may hold back a bit because I don't want to get sick. My local friends that have had WLS said if I've gotten this far without vomit, I've probably done a good job following the rules and its not going to happen to me. I do once in awhile get the pressure in my chest, but then I either don't eat that thing again for a few more weeks or I eat a portion of less than 1/4c. Has anybody come up with any "life saving" types of recipes or convenience foods that they like???

    August surgery buddies!

I feel like they tend to drop the ball with the short-term aftercare information. I had no idea about the heartburn meds and never took mine either until my 3-week post-op apt My doctor encouraged me to keep taking them for the same reasons. So glad ur doing good and congrats on your loss! Non-scale victories... I feel like I have so much more energy than before. Any lower back pain I had before is totally gone. No more shin splints or fasciitis pains. I can def. tell my clothing is fitting loser and people are starting to notice the loss. I'm starting to gain my confidence back up as well.

    July 2022 peeps!

Hi! Congratulations on the weight loss 👍🏻 I had my surgery on 7/28 and had lost 13lbs by 3 weeks then nothing for 10 days. Now at 4 weeks I’m at 18lbs. Every bit of advice I’ve gotten or seen from people ahead of me on this thread or others has helped so much. I don’t weigh myself every day now and I’ve taken the phrase “ be compassionate with myself “ to heart. Just last week I was on here wondering if my surgery was successful and now I’m feeling much better about it. Hang in there, from what I’m reading these stalls happen to all of us.
