If you dont stop obsessing for every pound now, you are going to be sorely upset when you go a few weeks and lose nothing. Peaks and valleys for weightloss, never a constant loss. Sent from my SM-G930P using the BariatricPal App

what were the previous weeks like? Perhaps you had a big loss and then things stabilized a bit... or if the losses have been very low for a bit, perhaps you do need to consider lowering your calories just a little. But I'm guessing it's just a little water retention or something and next week will show a loss again. Hang in!

ShrinkingPeach replied to Jazziminna's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
You can have Fluid retention from day to day. I don't know how often you weigh but it can fluctuate greatly from day to day. I weigh every day but try to see where the trend is going. Hang in there, this is very common and if you follow your plan the weight loss WILL happen! You can do this! -
Surgery on 9 Aug! Yikes!!!
Becca replied to curvygirl68's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
WELCOME!!!! The concerns you have are normal. I was terrified when I would think about having most of my stomach removed. You know what though, you don't need all of that stomach! It just allows you to eat yourself to death. I am so happy with my sleeve and I love being able to stop myself from mindless eating. Lose skin is just part of the process. I have horrible skin on my stomach (that I hope one day to have removed). I am able to wear Spanx to hold it in and so it's not so noticable under my clothes. I will take the lose skin to be able to wear cute clothes! hair loss will happen, but it grows back. I was never a big fan of Protein shakes. The only ones I could really tolerate was the Premiere brand. I am sure if you shop around you can find one that is lactose free. There is something called Bene-protein that I used for awhile to add to foods. It is tasteless. Maybe you could try that. Congratulations on this new chapter in your life! -
Some people say that hair loss is a part of the bariatric surgery experience. You might be interested in reading more about it. To those who are experiencing hair loss after sleeve gastrectomy, Google: Telogen effluvium. You will find many explainations about hair loss, some of which are connected to shocks to the system, severe diets being one. There is information there about the nutrients needed to keep our hair follicles "awake" and growing.

@@CanyonBaby, great post! So much truth and I hope people read and absorb it. It can be a real struggle, but I think it's worth it. I want to elaborate a bit on your: "You may gain weight back." a little. I've seen so many people online and off who say thing about weight loss surgery being PERMANENT weight loss. No damned way. SO many people lose considerable amounts of weight and yet gain back every pound and sometimes more because they go right back to eating the foods they did before and sometimes nearly the same amount. I have a friend who had surgery six months before me and she had less to lose than I do. She was 10 pounds from her goal around Christmas. A piece of pizza turned into three. A piece of pie at Thanksgiving had turned into trying a piece of each pie at Christmas along with Cookies and fudge. After the holidays it kept going and it continues to as of this month. This story also touches on your "you may lose friends" point as well, because she blew up at me a week ago because I wouldn't go out for pizza with her. I offered to have her over for something else but she insisted we get a pizza. Pizza is a food I used to love but I haven't had a bite of it since I started preparing for surgery last March because I know me and I need to focus to stay on track. She's gained back 40 pounds since December and shows no signs of stopping. She told me I'm obsessed with my surgery and my weight loss and that it isn't healthy for her to be around me anymore. It made me a little sad, but I can't afford to let anyone or anything knock me off my track. I used to weigh 450 pounds and I never want to be there again. I'm telling this not for pity, but to illustrate how even people who've been on a journey like yours, it isn't exactly like yours. We all arrived at the decision for surgery for myriad reasons and our weight loss paths are going to be different a well. There isn't one way to do it right, you have to do what's right for YOU to keep yourself moving in the losing direction. It's too easy to stumble and go backwards.

My ah ha moment, there were a few that happened in the same two week period: 1. My daughter is my mini me, same hair, face ect. And everyone is always telling she and I how much we look alike. One day she said to me "Mommy, I look just like you huh?". I agreed and she replied "Am I fat like you are too?" I almost broke into tears as I got on my knees and explained to my beautiful 5 year old that she was healthy and perfect. 2. Went out to eat with a girl I work with. As we slid into the booth I got agitated thinking the booth table ahd been over onto my side more as I could barely fit. Then I realized, no it hadn't been slid over, I was just to fat to fit anymore. 3. I got onto the scale and saw that not only had I exceeded the 250 mark but had surpassed it by 18 pounds. I realized at that moment that if drastic action was not taken I would be that woman in the grocery store using the carts because she cannot walk anymore. At 25 years old the thought of that left me cold and sick.

I am very frustrated today. I went in for my consult at Weight Loss Surgical Center in KC last November in which they checked to see if my insurance would pay and I received a phone call saying they would pay but it had to be done at an acute care facility which they did not have but were in the process of building one. Fast forward to a month ago and I called to check on the facility and if it was completed & they had just done their 2nd surgery there so the ball starts rolling again....get phone call to set up another consult OR pre-op visit. I was on the fence whether to do it or not and after joining this group and reading the success stories I am 110% committed so left 2 messages to set up pre-op consult and the person that gets insurance clearance had been calling me WEEKLY to update me on Tricare's requirements that were being met each week SO I think as soon as the facility meets Tricare's requirement I am a go....NOPE....now I'm told that my BMI is under 40 and I do not have the 2 co-morbidities to qualify. WHAT!?!?! Talk about popping someone's bubble fast that was ready to get this going..........so now I wait as they try to gain clearance from Tricare. Why would they tell me last year that they would defniitely pay for it and now possibly NOT? They had the same requirements last year that they do today. Very disappointed & upset. Anyone else have to deal with Tricare? Do they pay for your fills as well? I have a $1,000.00 family deductible which I met last year from being in the hospital twice and if I could have had this done before Oct 1st I would not have had to pay a dime! But my health is worth the $1000.00 at least and I just want to do this and I think if I'm denied I will really fall in to a deeper depression...I don't want to have to eat until my BMI is over 40 to get the surgery so I may be left of my own. I lost 84# once before but its all back and then some. They think my thyroid issues will count so they are going to run it by Tricare. Thanks for letting me vent and if anyone has Tricare just wondering how they were getting them to pay for your surgery!

Should I have the Gastric Sleeve or Gastric ByPass?
samuelsmom replied to Anita Kaddoura's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Unless you have some type of medical issue, there are pluses and minuses to each surgery. While lapband is the simplest surgery there is a significant number of persons who have the band slip or have major issues with it which requires another surgery to remove the band. The bypass reroutes digestion, however, is effective for resolving diabetes. The VSG leaves digestion intact and reduces the size of the stomach. VSG has fewer complications overall compared to the bypass. For me, the sleeve was an obvious choice as I ate very healthy foods, however, portion control was my biggest issue. I also am not open to the idea of another surgery. Once is enough! In short, depending on your current health, any of the 3 surgeries could be appropriate. I would suggest you go to some different weight loss seminars and determine what you are comfortable with. Good luck. -
Hello everyone, I'm Antonio I was sleeved on 5/29/15. Reside in NYC. Was sleeved at NY Presbyterian HW 340 SW 320 CW 200 MY GOAL WAS 225. But now I want to go down to 190 . I been motivated for the results of the weight loss and my gym results. I lost all of my weight by November 2015 now it's just been maintenance. Definitely keeping active, as you see I picked up biking which is something I haven't done in 20 years along with hiking. Surgery was the best decision I made in my life. My only regret was not doing it sooner since now I'm in my mid 40s . Hope to chat with fellow NY'ers

Revision options
catwoman7 replied to salasmarlene02@gmail.com's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
most people lose more weight with the DS, and it's easier to maintain your loss, but like Superman said, there's a greater chance of vitamin deficiencies with it since A LOT more of your small intestine is bypassed. But other than that, I'm not sure what to tell you. I know some DS'ers have to educate their PCP's and other doctors on the DS when things happen because it's not a common surgery - whereas RNY is very common so doctors are going to be pretty familiar with that (if this is even an issue for you...). I don't know - they're both good surgeries. -
Gastric Sleeve vs Medical Weight Loss
StarryNightSky posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
As I am beginning my journey to getting the Gastric Sleeve I had someone ask me what the difference was from having a Gastric Sleeve verses taking an appetiate suppressant and just eating less. I know I was asked this because not long ago I did a medical weight loss program for 5 months and lost 50 pounds but ended gaining it back and then some. I had no idea how to reply except to repeat the information I learned in the seminars I went to. But this conversation really got me down and had me asking myself why can't I just loss the weight that way am I crazy to be on this journey to a gastric sleeve. I am 5'3 327 pounds and I know I need to lose the weight and I am committed to making my sleeve work but if I am committed to that why can't I do it without it. -
Plastic surgeon in Houston TX?
ShoppGirl replied to readyIthink's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Ooh if it’s in another state they may not know anyone (but still worth a shot). You could also try a local weight loss surgery clinic that is reputable. I’m guessing they would be willing to share a name if you ask nicely. At least then you will have a couple names of people with experience with the surgery you want and then you can do your research from there. -
Hi there from Connecticut :)
Jesangel76 replied to Goalwatcher's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Awesome! It looks like you're well on your way. It's a pain in the arse, but once they say yes and give you the date - you'll finally be able to exhale and relax... I haven't been to any support groups yet. I've been meaning to attend them before my surgery so I can warm myself up to the idea that I will have to include these meetings in my weight loss plan. -
Thanks Tquad64 for the kind words. Your right we each will lose/gain differently. I guess the biggest thing is I feel like I am not doing what I am supposed to because I am not losing as much. However, I have lost inches and not weight during this l period of no losing, so I know I am still heading in the right direction. Yah the fill is right around the corner and I know that will help. The calorie counting is a great idea, the only thing is my doctor hasn't said what range he would like me stay within when it comes to calories or anything for that matter. I will make sure and ask when I go in on Jan. 22. I agree the exercise is key to helping with the weight loss and I have been moving around more then I did before. I bought a pedometer and have been walking at least 2 1/2 miles 7 days a week. Guess I just needed to hear its ok. Thanks again !!!!

Kiz, oh you're bad, putting hubby on the spot like that. Congrats on the weight loss.

Help me understand why one shouldn't eat solids after a fill?
allielee replied to WorkingMom's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
You do this because you want your lapband to work. The main reason is so that your stomache can slowly get used to being tighter and second the 2 days of liquids and 2 days of mushies really jump start your weight loss! I always lost the bulk of my weight right after a fill. Good luck and I hope this helps. The rules of the band are simple to follow and are there to help "optimize your weight loss!" -
Does Your Insurance Cover Plastic Surgery?

Best lotion to try a little to avoid saggy skin?
Jodi_620 replied to bethm's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Vain or not, it is a legitimate concern. I was worried about it too. We are close in age and my face isn't as tight as it was when there was a bunch of fat but it doesn't look saggy either and I am not too far away from goal now so I don't see it getting too much worse (due to weight loss anyway ). Overall I look MUCH, MUCH better without the weight. -
Hey there.. I also had this pain and was told the same thing that I had pulled out one of my internal stitches.. but I am over 7 months out now and no pain.. the only thing now is when I am standing my port sticks out due to the weight loss. I was told that it's ok to lose a stitch and after awhile your body naturally heals itself around your port. I wouldn't worry. I hope that helps!

August All Stars Easter Sunday Challenge! End, wk 1

Start: 243 Goal:223 Today: 239.8 Loss: 3.2 To Goal: 16.8 Had a great week! I really buckled down and got my snacking under control and it seems to have made the difference! -
Ok my disclosure is, I did eat these when I was on Atkins.. so I only know of its 'impact' on Atkins if you want to eat them. As for calories, since I am on a reduced calorie diet-- I stay away, calories are calories. But apparently carbs are not created equal! My husband is doing Atkins now and eats these as well. Anyway.. I don't know what sugar alcohols actually means (besides it can act as a laxative if consumed in large quantities), but if you're counting carbs, you get to subtract Fiber and Sugar Alcohols from the carb count. So, on Atkins these candies work out. They never affected mine (or my husband's currently) weight loss on Atkins. The nitty gritty which I don't quite understand is that they don't trigger your sugar levels to change (diabetic info inserted here--that I don't know), so it doesn't impact you like a normal carbohydrate would.

Laura, I just responded to your post a few lines up. With a lower BMI, check into Cincy weight loss center. Doc Osborne will operate on lower BMI people. I don't know what the costs are with docs out of the country, but being in the same state may even out the costs. It's also a same day thing with them so you don't have to stay overnight. (unless you have other health problems...) Their web site is www.CincyWeightLoss.com. I found them from a commercial during the Dr Phil show lol.

Best lotion to try a little to avoid saggy skin?
Jachut replied to bethm's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
All the factors are unique for you. You're right, as an ex smoker, you've done damage to your skin but you may naturally have better skin than the next person. There's just nothing but time will tell how your skin is going to react to weight loss. One thing's for sure. Nothing you put on it will stop loose skin, but there's nothing but good to come of keeping your skin in great condition. -
Sugar alcohols come out of the carb count. But as Laura said, they are also good laxatives, lol. The calories are still the same. In my humble opinion, you are doing yourself more of a disservice by eating the 'fake' chocolate with the fake sweeteners. Eat REAL chocolate, but in moderation. Those fake sugars screw with your metabolism. That's why you are not seeing weight loss. There is plenty of science out there that shows sugar free is NOT the way to go. Nor is the Fat free stuff. Off my soap box now.
