@@Djmohr hi I had my surgery on April 23 thus far from before surgery and post I lost 45 pounds. For Two Weeks I'm Stalling, my fluids I'm getting better at it and I stop taking my protein and vitamins which I started again this week. I walk my job I walk and constantly on my feet. I gained about 3 ounces my routine now is I wake up and take my protein, for lunch I will have mash potato and a little gravy. In between I try fruit which the only one I can deal with is cantaloupe or strawberry, and later have a yogurt. This is really my day. This is new to me and someone just refer me to this site and said it will be helpful. And thank you for the the time to reply.

Well, here it is...just a little more than 48 hours since my surgery. Yesterday afternoon was a little rough, my stomach hurt as if I did 50 sit ups and getting up and down was a chore. Finally dug out the heating pad and took an Aleve. Thas has really seemed to help. I only took the prescription pain meds the first day, then I switched to liquid tylenol. Gosh, those things taste AWFUL. Plus they didn't very good at relieving the pain; hence the Aleve. Feeling pretty perky except I think that darned anestesia (sp) is still hanging around in my system. Not quite up to normal speed yet. But, today will be my first outing. Our granddaughter turns 2 today so I just have to go to her party. But will be taking my protein drink and Greek yogurt. I am doing pretty well in not experiencing hunger yet. But I am sure that will kick in shortly. Well, it is back to work tomorrow morning at 0630. I just hope I feel twice as improved as I did today. KEEP UP THE EXCELLENT WORK, MY FELLOW AND FEMALE BANDSTERS.

OK, I am confused. I understand the process of being banded (surgery) but what I am confused about is the recovery period. I know I am supposed to be eating healthy, which I am desperately trying to do, but here is the confusion part..why am I told to eat things like yogurt, mashed potatoes, cream of wheat, oatmeal, puddings, applesauce??? all these things are packed with either sugar or carbohydrates. Is this just a recovery phase while healing and waiting for the fills to start? And after having watched the DVD which was provided to me yesterday, which outlines the 8 rules...am I supposed to do this from the very beginning or after I start fills? What do you do? I truly want this to work and I know the band is just a tool, but I need to know how to make it work to my benefit. Any suggestions? Z

I made this last night and it was big hit! I'm eating it again today for lunch and it really is good. Enjoy! Ingredients: 4 Talapia filets (or any type of fish you like) 1/4 c. salad dressing, ranch, nonfat or lowfat 3 T. yogurt, plain, nonfat or lowfat 1 1/2 T. mustard 1/2 lb. spinach, fresh (I used a big bag of baby spinach) galic salt and various other spices to your liking (I used a little garlic and Emrils fish rub) Directions: Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Rinse fish, pat dry with paper towels and arrange in glass baking dish. Mix dressing, yogurt and mustard; spoon evenly over fish. Spice the fish up, use your favorite seasonings, doesn't take much as the salad dressing and mustard have some spice in them. I like to sprinkle a little of Emeril's fish rub on mine, then maybe a shake or two of the garlic salt. Bake until fish is no longer translucent, 8 to 10 minutes. (I cooked mine more like 15 - 20 min) Remove tough stems from spinach; rinse thoroughly and drain. (I didn't have to do this as I bought the baby spinach in a bag) Heat nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. When skillet is hot, add spinach and stir-fry just to wilt the leaves, about 30 seconds. (I also added a little pam butter flavored to the skilley to give it a little more flavor and seasoned the spinach with a squeeze of lemon and garlic salt) Arrange spinach single layer on serving plates; top with baked fish. My Journey Starting With Pre Op Diet
Aidalphung replied to Tawnya777's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Greek yogurt , lf cottage cheese.and I think tuna is in your mushi diet along with cream of chicken soup -
I was sleeved on March 5th at approx 0800. My journey started a few years ago. I started tossing the idea of bariatric surgery around when I kept gaining and gaining weight. My dr kept doing test to see if there was a reason, and adding meds to my regimen because I was being diagnosed with different things. I talked to my dr about it and went through the initial seminar that the local bariatric surgeon has. That's as far as I went that time. I met my wife and realized that I wanted to be healthy. I wanted to be around for her and my children. Her and I talked and she pushed me to go back to the dr and start the process again. I am a paramedic for the city we live in and she is an EMT. A nurse at one of the ER's had recently had gastric bypass. My wife spent about an hour one night talking with her and her experience. She recommeneded the surgeon she used. He had practiced at the local trauma hospital and done the gastric surgeries there. Our friend had had great success and had nothing but great things to say about Dr. Allen. I did some research into the different types of surgeries that were being performed and decided that I really wanted the sleeve. I contacted Dr. Allen's office and scheduled to go through the seminar again. By this time I had almost completed the 6 month weight loss study with my primary dr. After the seminar I submitted the appropriate paperwork and was pre-approved. I met with Dr. Allen and informed that at that time he was not doing the sleeve. He suggested the bypass for me. I decided it was the next best thing; I was NOT having the band done. lol Dr. Allen wanted a few approvals from my primary physician before surgery. I had to have a EKG, and Pulminary Function Test. The PFT came back obstructed at the dr's office so I was sent to a pulmonologist. I was very discouraged. I met with the pulmonologist he sent me to and was told there was a chance I had COPD. Again, more discouragement. The pulmonologist was not about to sign off on letting me have surgery since the intubation could be bad for me. He wanted me to use an inhaler and CPAP at night for 6 weeks and come back for a follow up PFT. 6 Weeks later I was back. The PFT was enormously better, and I felt ENORMOUSLY better. Best of all, he APPROVED ME FOR SURGERY. My primary physician signed off ok'ing it as well. It was time for the waiting game with the insurance company for approval. A few weeks later on Feburary 5th at 1300, I recieved a phone call from the surgeon's office that I had been approved and my surgery date was March 5th. They gave me the date and time for the pre-op meeting and test. And the best of all, the information on the 1500 calorie diet I was to follow for 2 weeks prior to my surgery. 2-weeks prior to surgery my wife went to the store, stocked up on slim-fast shakes and frozen lean cusines and I started this crazy 1500 calorie diet. I was approx 390-400 lbs. It wasn't as bad as I expected. The day before surgery a few of my friends from work and my wife took me out for my "last meal". I went to the local BBQ shack and had a full rack of ribs. Normally, before the diet I could clean them off and still be hungry, however, I ended up sending almost half of them home with a co-worker! We then had a small desert and sat and talked for about an hour. It was the last time I really ate "real" food. The next morning my wife and I were up at 0430 getting showers and packing bags for my hospital stay. I was told to be prepared for a 3 day hospital stay. Surgery began at around 0900 and I was out and in recovery by 1030. No problems with sedation or intubation. However, I was slightly oversedated and sent to the ICU for the night because they were worried about the sedation and my sleep apnea becoming a problem. I don't remember much of this. The most I remember is having a cathader that I kept asking to be taken out and waking up with the CPAP mask on at one point. The next day at around 0800 I was taken for a swollow study (worse tasting stuff in my life). Everything looked great! Cathader was taken out and I was released to drink clear liquids! A few hours later I was moved out of ICU up to a regular floor bed. My wife spent hours with me at the hospital, encouraging me to get up out of bed to walk and get the gas off my stomach. She made sure that I was getting adequate nutrition as well as enough Water to drink. She even brought me fat free milk! On the Friday after surgery I called her to come get me. They removed my JP drain and got me ready to go. I was able to go home and get a FULL NAP!!! I actually felt good enough when I woke up to go to the grocery with her to get some broth, Soups, and yogurts. Since then, I am down to only 1 pain pill a day if I go out for a long period of time. I haven't gone back to work, but don't have a follow up until Monday. I'm hoping to get the staples taken out of the incisions on Monday as well. They itch like crazy. And I'm super excited to start the mushy stage of my diet. I'm ready to get back to the gym and start walking and riding the bike and lose some of this weight a little quicker. I'm amazed at the little amout that I'm eating and it's keeping me satisfied. I already have more energy than I did before the surgery and I am able to stay awake longer during the day. I did cheat yesterday and had 1 lean hotdog. I ate it very slowly and didn't drink anything with it or afterwards. I didn't get sick, but I felt 100x's better afterwards. Guess, we're not all perfect lol Hope everyone else that has been sleeved is doing well also, and everyone getting ready to be sleeved is excited!

The need to chew...
Bobbi McGhee replied to Bobbi McGhee's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm following my plan, I was just curious if anyone felt the same way. I can have yogurt on Monday, which is only 2 more days away. I'm just getting sick of this clear protein drink. And I'll be happier once I can have some milk and my chocolate protein shake. I'm not pushing it. I've made such a drastic decision to better my life, I'm not going to mess it up. It's just hard to make a full dinner for my family and not participate. I know it's only a few days. But it's a thought that has run through my head. -
Same here. I even had to take MOM just to go every 3 days and it was super hard....even caused bleeding. Once I started adding insoluble fiber to my shakes and yogurt, I've had regular, soft daily BM's. For me, soluble fiber like Metamucil and benefiber did nothing. It had to be insoluble fiber. I currently use a mixture of ground flax seed and Now Foods apple fiber.

The incredible edible egg
JackieOMonroe replied to Douceur72's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I can't usually tell when I'm full. The feeling is so different than the old feeling of full that I feel compelled to keep eating. I take 30-45 minutes to eat a meal. Usually that consists of a cup of greek yogurt, or a packet of cream of wheat. I'm hoping that when I ear foods that are more solid, the full feeling will be more obvious. Right now, I just stop eating when i decide that I should probably be done. It's kind of frustrating for me. I'm worried that I'm doomed to overeat even though my stomach is smaller. -
Hi everyone! I just wanted to thank everyone for all the good information on these boards! I've been lurking for about a week & finally decided to post. All my paperwork has been forwarded to the doctor in Mexico & now it's a waiting game to see if I'm approved! I started a 'liquid' diet yesterday just to see if I could do it, 1 1/2 days in & it's not bad. I was going to go to Starbucks on my lunch break, I usually get a frappachino w/skim milk or a carmel macchiato w/skim milk, but on my way I decided I really didn't have any interest in one!! I'm trying to stick to Slim-Fast, Activia yogurt, eggs, lowfat string cheese, V8... Most of the posts have such a good vibe & everyone seems to be happy with their decision (at least the one's I'm choosing to read!) I look forward to becoming a 'sleeve sister' soon!!

The Need To Feed - Myself !
monalisa1010 replied to monalisa1010's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Nancy, howbfar out are you ? Not everyone gets this. It usually happens if you eat too much or too fast. If this happens you Will know. Its an excessive amout of salivia that you produce, so much so that I keep a cup with me to not have to go to the bathroom to spit every 30 seconds. Foam is also produced, its just terrible. When you "vomit" its not like what you would expect, its an actual slime ball, im sorry i know this is disgusting. This happens to me most of the time if i eat anything other han pudding or yogurt. It happens when i chew min of 40 times & also if i wait 5 min before taking a second bite. Hope you never encounter this ! -
I am so frustrated!! I lost 11 pounds during the month before surgery-3 weeks liquids. Surgery was on June 27th. I went down 6 lbs by the end of that week. Woo Hoo!!!! I've NEVER lost that much in a week. Of course I ate next to nothing because anesthesia always depresses my appetite for a week afterwards. I did get every drop of Water in during that time. Okay why am I so frustrated? I went down 2 lbs one single day during the past two weeks, but those 2 lbs have played games with me since that day up 1, up 2, up 3...I never know. I have kept track of every bite that goes in my mouth. I'm on soft Proteins now, not allowed any carbs except veggies and dairy which is great for my diabetes. I am averaging between 600 and 800 calories per day, between 20 and 40 carbs, 70 - 120g Protein, and under 25 g fat. I'm exercising 30 -45 min daily; nothing too strenuous yet. I know what you're all thinking- that's not enough calories. Well I'm 54 and very motivated. I feel like this is my last chance and I'm just trying so hard. Forget the band...how could I gain 1-3 lbs during the past two weeks eating like this. I feel hunger pains several times a day and I gulp water to help them go away. I called my nutritionist today and she was very nice. She wants me to up my calories to 1000 and see if that helps. I'm not sure what to eat? If I could have cream of wheat, oatmeal, potatoes, or whole grain breads it would be easy. Thanks in advance to all of you out there who I know will give me some words of wisdom. On a very positive note - I've reduced my insulin by half!!! Wow-my health was my main and most important reason for having this surgery. And it is helping no doubt. I'll be thrilled when I get "optimization"(new term for restriction..lol) out of my band. Thanks for reading and feel free to ask any questions if you just don't get my point! What if I can't 'do' puree?
RubberTrampRyan replied to Smile!'s topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yuck. Puree stage is horrible. I have to do it for 3 weeks, i'm 2 weeks in. I drink 2 Bariatric Fusion shakes with 8oz of Lactaid which gives me my minimum protein requirement. Throughout the day I'll have 1/4 cup scrambled eggs, a 6oz Yoplait Light yogurt cup, a 100 calorie Healthy Choice greek froyo cup, and 60 Gerber Lil' Crunchies snacks, and at least 32oz of Crystal Light. I get all my liquids and about 80g of protein, right around 800 calories a day. It sucks and I'm dying for some chicken salad or stringcheese, but beats putting turkey, potatoes, gravy, etc. in a blender... -
Banded 12/30, and am hungry already
brijan replied to PhillyGirl's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was also banded 12/30 and i feel your pain, this is not a good feeling. I just keep telling myself that Thursday i get to start yogurt and applesauce. This is insane. I wonder if i made the right choice. I am going to do it though. I wanted this and i will make it work or i will starve to death. Good luck from STL. -
no more thing the next morning you will go down for the xray to check for leaks, obviously you wont be able to drink anything before that, but after that you will get gatorade and I think tea? I don't really remember I stuck with the gatorade for fear of dehydration, after that it's mushies, you go straight to mushies, I believe I had oatmeal, yogurt and Jello brought up to me, now obviously there was no way I could eat it all, as a matter of fact I wasn't even hungery, but just a note they want you to be able to eat mushies' before they send you home, don't be scared that it is going to slow down your weight loss it wont, as a matter of fact I think it helped because I didn't hit that stall that everyone else seems to have when they go from liquids to mushies. and don't be surprised when one or two bites fill you up, don't pust it or force it, I followed the nutrionist rules and stop once i get that feeling that i've had enough and I've never gotten sick from over eaten.

yogurt will go down fine and it is the one thing I was able to eat the most of but I gotta tell you it all gets old real quick lol I got to the point that I couldn't even drink a Protein shake anymore it just wouldn't go down the taste and thickness of it just started to make me choke.. I finally order this stuff callled click protein it taste like coffee, alot of people on here will say it is the wrong protein, but liz ( the Nut ) was starting to get so worried about the amount of protein I was getting that she didn't care and told me to drink it even tho it wasn't whey... She also told me I could drink through a straw because I wasn't getting my fluids in and I told her I could drink more with a straw and she said fine then do it. She also allowed me smoothies shakes that I would make using yogurt, calorie countdown milk and fruit or I think in the beginning I was using the torani syrup instead of fruit and then moved on to real fruit later.

Here's what my nutritionist wrote when I asked why the liquid diet was necessary and not just a low glycemic diet: "You are to follow the pre-op meal plan that was given to you. I know it's hard because it doesn't consist of a lot of substance, but it is a requirement from Dr. --- in order to have surgery. Every person whom is overweight or obese has an enlarged liver. The liquid diet helps shrink the size of the liver, fat around the abdomen and helps Dr. -- perform the surgery in record time and prevents him from poking your fatty liver with his surgical tools. If your liver is fatty and it gets poked it will bleed and therefore the operation will take longer. Please follow the guidelines and don't have anything that isn't already listed on the pre-op diet. Dr. -- has been known to put his camera in the belly, look at the liver and if it's still too large, a funny color from eating solid foods or if he feels that you cheated, he will cancel your surgery on that very day! So please take full advantage of 2 Protein shakes a day and 3 servings of cottage cheese, milk or yogurt to help fill you up as much as possible. The previous items include protein for satiety! " Guess that puts the fear of God (and Dr.--) in ME! I want my liver the right color, whatever that is!!

Protein Shakes?
O.T.R. sleever replied to beatles girl's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Just be very careful with the bars, they tend to be very high calorie. Other options for Protein are Hemp Protein powder. I mix this with 4oz of mango purée & 2-4oz of water- tastes great. Greek yogurt, it has tons of protein. unjury chicken Soup flavor. It teases like the broth from ramen soup. String cheese And of course tuna, and the like. Hope this helps. -
2nd Fill - Too Tight???
2beskinny replied to 2beskinny's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Aaaaahhhhh....much better  Got .5 taken out today. I was able to swallow Water again immediately and then had a bowl of veggie Soup (mostly broth) for lunch. The surgeon who did my fill was in surgeries today so his PA did my unfill. She did a great job and wanted to go the whole .5. I asked her if we could do .2 or .3 as I was trying to avoid feeling the NO restriction feeling again, but she assured me that it was best to go .5. I was very swollen and got immediate relief. I still felt some restriction with the soup (probably mostly the swelling) but I'll take it. Being overfilled is miserable! It kinda made bandster hell seem OK. It was a learning experience I couldn't even exercise this morning because of the weird feeling in my chest after just 2 sips of water! My next fill is in 5 weeks. She made the observatioin that most people with the 10cc band that I have feel restriction between 4-5 ccs. Maybe the 3rd one will be the sweet spot! I'm at 3 now after the partial unfill, plus maybe a touch more from the priming procedure during surgery. Kydman - my doc says eat "lightly" the day of the fill, then after - clear liquids only for 24 hours. Then pureed for 24 hours, then soft for 24 hours, then regular food again. I can tell you that with my first fill I had no problems whatsoever. I felt I was pretty swollen from the surgery for only about 3-5 days. After that initial period I didn't necessarily feel hungry, but I could eat a container of yogurt or 4 oz. of cottage cheese, etc. whereas the first couple of days I could only do a couple of bites. I remember thinking that I might not get my first fill as scheduled because I really wasn't hungry. By the time the date rolled around, I felt like I could handle it and did fine. My doc, however, is only 20 minutes away, so I always have an option. I know some folks travel quite the distance to their docs so you have to choose what makes sense for you. One more week into the healing process can make a HUGE difference in how you are feeling -
The reason I began to introduce variety of foods around the fourth month was because after being cleared back to solids had a very hard time holding just about anything down. Even water made me gag, sick and nausea. it got to a point during the second month developed horrible heartburn that felt like a heart attack ending in ER. After that I decided just to stick to soups... yogurts.. shakes because I did not want to get sick again. Once I hit my fourth month slowly re-introduced solids to wean out the foods I could or could not tolerate. Has it improved.. Yes.. but still cannot eat meats.. eggs.. any type of health breads.. still cannot tolerate water. In regards to my regrets!.. Yes it's just food.. and the tool I was given is to improve my overall health and well being. Have I lost the weight.. Yes 70 pounds.. do I feel amazing.. Not exactly. I feel tired.. very low energy and am also losing my hair. My regrets are based on all those factors that I was not expecting this far in as well as just missing the norm of eating a healthy meal without experiencing that horrible pressure after 3 -4 bites. I now dread meal time because I don't know how I am going to feel . Quantity has nothing to do with it... it's quality of life. I know I am not alone in this because I have spoken to many post vsg outside this forum who feel the same. So for those who have had a positive experience god bless.. but for those like me who wish they can turn back the clock keep searching for an outlet and foods that can make your meal experiences tolerable..

Late May 2015 surgery date - check in!

Maureen - The RN in my clinic just made a lot of suggestions for added protein as I progress to puréed foods. (Yay!) 1) Greek yogurt and protein drink added to a fruit smoothie 2) Applesauce with cottage cheese (I had it tonight, heavenly!) 3) Mashed potatoes with chicken breast (puréed for now). -
Banded 12/28, finally feeling better
willbehgb replied to willbehgb's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm so sorry to hear that you all have shared some of my struggles! I actually cried reading some of the posts from people who said they were up the next day doing laundry and cleaning. I too am happy with my weightloss thus far. I am supposed to be doing high Protein full liquids including Jello, pudding, and yogurt. I just can't do the protein!! I already have such a little desire to eat and the thought of putting high protein pudding in my mounth disgusts me! I did soft scamble an egg earlier and made it through most of that ok. I figured that would be a good way to get some protein in. -
Is there anyone that does NOT have trouble eating or drinking.
marfar7 replied to pjackson0523's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Wait till ur on regular foods. It's easier to eat 4oz of yogurt than it is to eat 4oz of steak. I'm 3 1/2 mths post op and can only eat about 2-3oz of a TOTAL meal (including Protein, veggies and a carb). I'm hungry again in 2 hrs, but thats beside the point! They took out 85% of ur stomach. Don't worry. You won't be able to eat like you did pre op. I promise...
