How do you know if you stretched your sleeve

100% agree. When i had my band i never went in for "unfills"... i just adjusted my portion sizes... I learned valuable lessons in all those years and i truly believe it's why even after my band removal and being without i gained only 30lbs..... That being said, it still was 30lbs and on someone 5'2".. it's not a good look. I went from 143 to 173.5 in 2.5 years..... Did i look terrible...No, Did i feel terrible... YES... I felt like a failure even though i didn't have any tool I thought i should have been able to control my eating better. I quickly was reminded what "hunger" felt like again. With the band, i was never hungry. I didn't have to have the sleeve done and in any other situation, i would not have even qualified for it. But because i had had the band my dr did it as a revision (2.5 years later). And because i was lucky enough to have 14k in my bank account. I worry about the pouch stretching.... this is why i portion everything... and If i'm still hungry.. too bad, i just go hungry. As of today i at 135.... SX 8/28/19 Feeling like my old self again.... all my clothes that were too tight now either fit or are to big.... whoop whoop.

    Port and Tube replacement

Hello to the previous people who had tube /port repair or replacement, I am having my tube re-attached in 2 days time, 29/01/20. The damage was caused a couple of years ago after an accident, I am really looking forward to my band working properly again as I had very good success previously. I have been lucky to find a surgeon in Perth (Australia) that will do the necessary surgery as unlike some things I have read on here, banding is no longer favourable here. Fingers crossed and hopefully a new wardrobe of clothes in a few months.

    PAIN, 8 DAYS POST OP

I had surgery on 1/10 and my wife had surgery on 1/17. I had almost zero pain and was out walking around the block and going up and down the stairs 2 days after surgery. I was really surprised. However my wife is still having pain. Everyone and every surgery goes a little differently. Rest up and don't do too much, just let it heal and you should be fine soon.
  8. Oh my stars, this is exactly what i thought! I agree, it's time to amp up the protein, one way or another. AZhiker, thanks so much for this recommendation. It looks like I need ~10-15 more grams of protein per day. Also, I wanted to thank you for some of your posts on exercise. I've found them really inspiring. I've started lifting a few days per week, and I'm adding in some yoga. Once I get stronger (and hopefully restart the weight loss), I'm going to start running again. I really can't wait! Thanks so much for this bit of potential context. I was just so flummoxed when he said it -- I really should have asked a follow up question, but my mind just sorta went into a "what the heck!?!?" space. Thanks, folks, for the sanity check!
  9. I have two questions that are admittedly silly. Background: Had a RNY on 12/20/19. SW was 205, CW is 185, stalled for 2 weeks at 185. (I'm female, 46 yo). 1. How much protein should I be eating daily? I've asked my NUT this question, and she says I should be "doing my best" to get in protein, but that they don't give out goal numbers. How am I supposed to know what the number I should be reaching, if they won't tell me? I then asked my surgeon, and he advised me to speak with my NUT. This seems ridiculously silly, so I'll ask you all: How much protein should I be eating daily? I exercise moderately 3x/week and have a sedentary job, if that helps at all. 2. When I visited with my surgeon for my four-week checkup, he said, "You've lost pretty much all the weight you're going to lose due to the RNY. Everything you lose from this point on will have to be through exercise." OK, that sounded really strange to me. I was four weeks out at the time. RNY is a tool, which I'm working, but just because I started with a relatively low weight, it doesn't mean that there's no weight loss, right? Because that's just crazy. I track calories religiously, and I'm averaging 500 cals per day, about 50 grams of protein. I'll lose some weight just because the calorie deficit, I would think. I'll be honest, I wouldn't even be checking with everyone, but I've been in the three-week stall for two solid weeks now, it is making me a bit crazy. I'm ok with a stall, I'm not ok with this being the end of weight loss. In writing this out, I think I feel better about getting medical advice from random people on the Interwebs, instead of my surgeon's office. Sigh.
  10. I had fluid removed from my band when I got pregnant. I noticed that I had terrible gas pains and bloating. I attributed it to the pregnancy. I miscarried the pregnancy but never lost the gas and bloating. That was four years and 4 miscarriages ago. I feel it has to do with having the fluid removed from the band. I had most of the fluid put back in but later started having esophageal spasms and had to then have it all removed. I now have 4 of the 6 cc's back in. I'm going to get 1 more put in. But all thru this I never lost the horrible gas and bloating. Now we are assuming I have IBS but I think its funny how it all started when we started messing with the band. Now my sister has also just had to have all her fluid removed. As soon as she did she started having horrible gas and bloating and gained 10 pounds in a week. She mentioned the gas to our surgeon but he acted like no one has ever had this issue. I am going to bring it up again to him next week.

    January 2020 Surgery Date

I had VSG and I have a desk job. I am ready to go back to work tomorrow. I don't have the same energy used to as I am averaging about 500 calories per day. I have zero cravings and no hunger. But I feel I can handle working. As long as you can get in 64 oz of water and meet your protein daily goals you probably should be able to go back to work. If you have a job that is more strenuous you probably will need more recovery time. Also keep in mind, no lifting more than 10 lbs for the first 4 to 6 weeks until you incisions heal.
  13. Some history: I am a 29-year-old American woman living in Denmark on a residency permit with my husband and his kids. We tried to get pregnant for a while, but after many failed attempts, we decided to bring our concerns to an OB/GYN. I was diagnosed with PCOS and was asked to lose quite a bit of weight before they would help via fertility treatments. It has been a struggle to get any assistance at all in regards to PCOS related symptoms because of my weight, never mind the fertility issues that come along with it. I decided to go for bariatric surgery, as recommended by my GP. Meetings held & requirements so far: A week prior to my meetings, I was required to get an EKG and blood test done. 12/09/2019 (141kg / 310lbs) - I had my first meeting with one of the doctors at the diabetes center. It was basically just the start of a medical journal. He got my starting weight, illnesses, medication, and allergies. I was told that I need to lose 8% of my current weight, which would put me at 129kg / 284lbs. He told me that it looked like I would be offered surgery since I met the requirements (a BMI over 35 with concurrent related diseases, which, for me, is PCOS, sleep apnea, and a history of hypertension), but I would find out on my next visit. The day before I left on vacation (12/17/2019), I weighed 136kg / 299lbs! While I had a great time visiting family, I ate way too much unhealthy food and shot back up to 142kg / 313lbs when I returned home (01/09/2020). Yikes! 😩 I managed to get the weight back off before my next visit though! 01/15/2020 (135kg /297lbs) - This was my second meeting, but this time it was with a senior doctor. He described the pros and cons of each option for surgery. Due to me having a history of occasional acid reflux and heartburn, he suggested that I go with the bypass surgery. However, he told me that I could choose for myself. I have decided to stick with what he recommended. By the end of the conversation, he offered me the surgery (as I figured at this point 😂) and set up an appointment for me to see a dietitian. He also said that my EKG and blood tests came back normal. Within two weeks of the previous meeting, I had to send in a stool sample. Upcoming meetings: 02/18/2020 - My first appointment with a dietitian. 03/06/2020 - Normally, I would be required to attend a patient seminar with other overweight people prior to surgery, but because I do not speak fluent Danish, I will have to participate in a 1-on-1 meeting with the details of how the operation takes place, how to prepare, and how to eat/live after the operation. This is a plus to me, as I am normally uncomfortable in large groups of people. As of today (01/26/2020), I weigh 133kg / 293lbs! With this current rate of weight loss, I imagine I will have met my goal weight for surgery by the time I have my first visit with the dietitian. This both delights and worries me, as I am not sure how they will take this information. I was told during the meeting with the senior doctor, that once I lost the weight, I would simply call up the clinic to tell them and I would get my surgery date some days later via email. However, the emails I received from the clinic prior to these meetings thus far have confused me, as they don't seem to suggest the same thing. Here's the list of requirements that I am still supposed to meet besides the upcoming appointments I have listed above: Lose at least 8%-12% of what I weighed the first time I visited the clinic and maintain that weight loss until the day of surgery. I need to have regular conversations (via meetings with a dietitian at the clinic or telephone) with approx. 4 week intervals to discuss: Agreements and goals for progress and weight loss Dietary changes Exercise Smoking and drinking alcohol Medical diseases Then, it says: after 3-6 months, I am to have a status interview and then a team of specialists will assess whether I can be offered an operation. 🤔 I guess what I am confused about is that I thought I was already offered the operation, but just needed to lose the required weight before I could get a date! Furthermore, if I lose the weight before my first meeting with the dietitian, would I really need to have so many more meetings after that? Eh, I guess I will make that phone call once I reach my goal weight to find out where I go from there. I am hoping it's as easy as the senior doctor said it would be during our meeting! Anyways, that's enough from me for now. I'm Steph! I recently joined the FB group and ended up finding my way onto the website. I look forward to writing with you all more in the future! Good luck, everyone! If anyone else has experienced a similar situation in the Scandinavian countries, I would love to hear what clarification you guys had gotten! And sorry if I sound totally spoiled -- I know the US insurance companies require a lot more in order to cover the operation! 🙈

    January 2020 Surgery Date

I’m having surgery in 2 weeks (February), and wondered if I could ask you guys who have just had your surgeries as few questions... 1. My doctor says I can likely be back to work in 7-10 days. I’ve had my gallbladder removed and I felt like I was ready to head back to work after 3 days. Is 7-10 days after realistic? (I teach kindergarten, but can head to the washroom when needed and avoid lifting for the first few weeks as I have a full time EA this year). 2. Did your cravings drop after surgery? I’m 1 week in to my 3 week pre-op and not craving sugary foods. I think maybe because the protein drinks are sweet. But the cravings for savoury things is intense (cracker and cheese, steak, etc). I’m seasoning my roasted veggies and it helps a little. But when you have to make 3 meals/day for your family and see and smell the food, it doesn’t help much.

    Weight loss slow down

That’s what I’m saying I’m confused too I talk to my nutritionist and she said she’s not worried about it but I am now granite before my surgery before my 10 day pre-op diet I was 271 now 228 that is a considerable weight loss but now that I had the surgery I’m 20 days past my surgery and I am not losing any I gained I’m starting to wonder whether he did the operation right or not
  16. At my first meeting with the bariatric surgery program (12/17/19) I asked about the pre-op diet. I was told that the latest research shows that liquid fasting for 1-2 weeks prior to surgery does not benefit the patient, but actually causes distress, so they no longer require it as of a few years ago. For the pre-surgery diet, they now require that for 2 weeks, you have one small meal a day, and the rest is liquids. I was so happy to hear that because a month seems like a REALLY long time to be on liquids only (if you have to do liquids for 2 weeks pre-surgery and 2 weeks post-surgery.

Calling all vets- where are you

I was sleeved may 15th 2017. I was pretty active my first year post-op, but then life got busy with 2 new grand babies and traveling for work. I hit my goal weight about 8 months post op and I am usually within 10 lbs of my goal weight since then. I am currently about 12 pounds above where I want to be mostly because I am having a hard time adjusting to not being able to run. I had knee surgery 2 months ago and I am still having pain. I need to nip this now and cut back on calories until I can figure out where I need to be with less exercise.

    Weight Loss on Pre-Op Diet

Yes, it's normal (although everyone is different). I also find that the heavier a person is, the more they lose on these types of diets. I've noticed this not only on sites like this, but also when I was a part of weight watchers. People who were morbidly obese had very large drops of weight on any kind of restricted diet (10 pound or more a week), where as that would be both unusual and alarming for anyone who was within a normal BMI range. The first time I did this I lost 21 pounds in 21 days during my pre-op diet (of course it was not one pound a day, it stalled and dropped over 3-5 days usually, but the end result was this). I'll be starting my pre-op for my revision surgery in February, so hopefully I can get similar numbers.
  22. I had MGB in TJ in April 2017 and it resolved my acid reflux, which was very severe pre-op. Life was great, lost a lot of weight, but 10 months post-bypass I developed bile reflux. I knew it was this because I would throw up greenish-yellow liquid, and then it was confirmed via EGD, along with Barrett’s Esophagus. My gastroenterologist and PCP were unfamiliar with bile reflux and did not know how to treat it, no medicines they recommended helped, but I found a great out-of-state bariatric surgeon (who also specializes in complex revisions) who was able to treat me. In July 2018, he repaired a hiatal hernia and performed a Nissen Fundoplication on me and since then I’ve had zero acid or bile reflux issues, which have been confirmed via EGD (2 of them post-op). He considered revising me to RNY but during surgery he was able to do some magic so that I didn’t need that extra procedure. And as the final step in my weight loss journey, I’m scheduled for plastic surgery in mid-Feb 2020.
  23. Hello, still here. I let go for the holidays... and so started back on track with my diet , but down 10# after 2 weeks of no added sugar and watching the carbs. My knees have been giving me trouble still but getting gel injections every 6 months so that does help. Overall I’m down 110# and held with a10-15 # fluctuations.
  24. Hello surgery 12/10/19. Surgery weight was 252, this morning I am at 223.2lbs. So, a weight loss of 28.8. When I went in for my first post op I was at 262 but believe it was the actual IV fluids and swelling. I can tell a big difference in my face and my clothing I was wearing 22 now in a 16. I feel great!
