    September surgery buddies!!

Hi Buddies - Two weeks away and I've got a lot of head trash going on that I just need to get off my chest. ::deep breath:: Fair warning - this is kinda long, rambling and full of woe is me. Feel free to exit stage left now. I am afraid. Not of surgery, not of complications, but of failure. I've tried so many things and failed. Or succeeded, then gained the weight back and then some more. I feel so out of control of my weight, I've gained steadily for two years straight. 50+lbs. Nothing stopped it, not even my usual approaches. And I can't help but think, if starving myself didn't work in the past (I mentioned I've tried everything, including very low calorie diets) and led to regain plus some, why will this work? If I couldn't stop the gain, how will I possibly lose the 100lbs I need to lose? If I am in control of the successful outcome of the surgery based on adherence to the rules - then that makes me shake in my boots. I've been down that road before, "You will be successful if you just follow the program!" Didn't work so well obviously. I'm feeling defeated because of my past, but trying to find hope. My hope is all the success stories. I'm almost hesitant to feel TOO hopeful because of my fear of failure. I also know I'm not alone in how I feel, that many of you feel or felt the same. And if you don't feel this way, please don't let my fear become your fear! I KNOW you all will be successful!! It's my own failure that I'm all too familiar with. Sorry to be so negative. I just had to get this **** out of my head and get honest with how I'm feeling.
  2. These pixies sound awesome. Also it would be a crazy busy job. But then what do they do with the fat after they take it away? Is that how other people gain weight? Do you have to make offerings to the pixies in order to stay on their good side? ... Maybe I should stop wandering down this rabbit hole... Sent from my Pixel 4a using BariatricPal mobile app

    August surgery buddies!

I’ve had a crazy week after my surgery on the 29th. I’ve been struggling with gas pain and swelling; my tummy is so swollen and sore. I have huge bruising near my incision sites, too. I got really nauseated yesterday and started vomiting. I really felt terrible! So I ended up back at the surgery center to get IV fluids. I was really dehydrated. Im feeling sooo much better today! I have some meds for nausea now and lidocaine patches for areas near my incisions that are very sore. Im still the same weight as my surgery day so I guess I should be thankful I didn’t gain due to all the swelling! Im living on jello, bone broth, popsicles, and a LOT of water!!

    Diuretics after surgery

I take eplerenone, which is a diuretic. I continued to take it after surgery. I also have lasix as needed and they purposely gave to me in the hospital (even though I typically don't take it) and I am glad they did... got rid of post-surgery fluids. It wasn't a problem after surgery. Sure constipation was an issue, but that's an issue for lots of us regardless of diuretics. I just made sure to get my minimum fluids as soon as I could post surgery. Also, if taking for high blood pressure, it's a good idea to monitor your pressures after surgery. As you lose weight, you may not need it (or as much of it) as you did before. I halved two of my BP meds pretty quickly after surgery.

    Help! VSG or Bypass

I’m so sorry i know how horrible it is. I had the VSG October last year, lost all the weight but by my 4th month i couldn’t take the pain from GERD Dr had me on so many medications for it but nothing worked. I am now a week post conversion to Bypass no Gerd anymore. Best decision ever. I hope you can convert soon 🥰

    Revision to bypass

Hi, i had the sleeve on October 6 last year, i lost all the weight and more. Unfortunately my Gerd was so severe i had to convert to bypass. I converted August 23rd so far so good. From what i know there is not a non surgical way to convert to bypass or to get a sleeve revision. I have a friend who had the sleeve and for following certain life style changes gained all the weight back she than got the bypass. She lost all the weight and has kept most of it off, she does struggle a lot and wishes she was more mentally prepare, she believes she wasn’t mentally prepare to make some changes and that has affected her progress both times. So i would say talk to your Dr and see what the best option for you is. Best of luck 🥰

    August surgery buddies!

I had a meeting with my nutritionist today, She was super helpful with ideas I can start trying and encouraged me to do so. I've been kinda scared lately to eat, mostly because I don't like the way I feel after and the fear of overeating. She also confirmed what my PT doc. said yesterday and told me I was right on track where they expect to be in my weight loss. I think I'm so scared of disappointing everyone it has just gotten to my head that I need to lose it all RIGHT NOW, haha.. This has been such a mental struggle and adjustment for me as I'm sure it is for all of you. I think each time I see my team I'm so shocked at how positive they are with this journey for me. That I just expect to be treated awful like I deserve it as a punishment for getting to where I am. I continue to look forward to seeing all of our journies with this new tool we have 3mo, 6 mo, 1 yr + unfold.
  8. Well, I was thinking maybe if I made an appointment at another place, I wouldn't even tell them I had surgery at all. Heck, I gained weight back and am now a candidate for surgery again LOL. But I think there might be staples or something in from the original surgery, so I would THINK they would be able to tell?
  9. I would think of you have gained all the weight back you would be approved fairly easily. It seems like it when people have only gained part back that they have to prove it’s medically necessary for reason other than those Based on BMI. I’m sure it all depends on your insurance but it seems to me like you would be okay. Hopefully someone who has actually had a revision with similar experience will see this and let you know based on actual experience.

    Weight during preop

There are a couple things that some people miss when they begin tracking or measuring. Are you counting all the oils and marinades you are cooking with? Also are you actually measuring sauces and stuff?? Two tablespoons was alot less than i though. When I actually put it in a measuring cup I realized I had been using a lot of calories worth of dressings. Another thing I was underestimating was shredded cheese. I don’t mean to sound insulting if you are already measuring these things correctly that’s great but I know I wasn’t in the beginning. if you really are tracking everything correctly then it has to be stress. If I understood correctly your team did not actually give you a goal of weight to lose?? For the most part the medically managed diet is just an insurance hoop like others have said. A few people with higher BMI’s are given a specific Amount of weight that they must lose in order to make the procedure safe but for the most part it’s just the insurance game. if I were you I would contact your team and let them know you are struggling and ask if you were required to lose In order to be approved or not. Get rid of that thing that is most likely causing you stress which is causing your body to be in fight or flight mode making it harder to lose.
  11. just another update… down to 374.4! thats 65 lbs this year so far! it’s been several years since i have seen my weight under 390!! Been doing some really hard emotional work and am pretty used to the keto… think that combo is bringing success

    Question on hair loss

I cut mine in two stages. My hair wasn’t quite at my waist but probably about 2/3 down my back. Had about 4inches cut off in the first month then had it cut to just above my shoulders in the second month. (I go to my hairdresser every 4 weeks to colour & cut my hair.) Have to admit the shorter strands did not look nearly as bad as the long hair in the bottom of the shower - didn’t seem as as much hair. By cutting off some of the length you may notice your hair is much bouncier & less flat as you don’t have the weight of the longer hair pulling your hair down. Your hair will grow back but it will just take a bit of time to get back to the length you want it. Or you may decide to keep the shorter length like I did. So much easier to care for & style.
  13. Haven't updated this thing in a while. It's just to keep me accountable and I know others can read this so feel free to chime in. I'm officially almost entering my 7th month of post op life from my gastric bypass. I feel so much better and I've lost over 100 lbs but there are days I still feel like it won't all really matter at all until I am stick skinny (which wouldn't be possible without plastics and even then I don't think so). I hate that I think that way - it makes it hard to be happy for myself and then that feeds into not meeting my goals.

I was in a weight loss rut for a while there - like the whole month of August basically was me just gaining and losing the same 4 lbs. I figured it was just a weight loss stall part of the process because I hear there's a big stall 6 months out. I also was macro and calorie counting but I was drinking more alcohol than I ever have since surgery. I think that contributed to it immensely. Just to be clear I wasn't drinking out of transfer addiction - just going to more social events and dinners because my life has gotten so incredibly busy. It's amazing because I have the confidence to go out and be social now but it makes it harder to navigate the strict calorie limits and hydration goals when you're always hanging out with people.

Anyway, I really put a lot of thought into calories the past two weeks and stopped drinking too. I finally broke my stall. I went from 240 to 236 and it seems to be sticking. I'm at this weird part in the surgery journey where the honeymoon is over. I no longer get food stuck in my esophagus on the regular but I have noticed I am starting to feel nauseous after eating (probably because I don't have the limitation of the food getting stuck) so I don't realize how much my body is actually okay with.

So now I'm at this point where I'm figuring out how much of different types of foods I can really eat without making myself nauseous. It's a work in progress but I'm determined. I'm usually good around 1/2 a cup of carbs and 1-1.5 cups of vegetables. Protein is always different. Sometimes I can eat it no problem, others it's one of the only foods that still get "stuck". I try not to go crazy counting calories because I have a history of eating disorders. I mainly try to stay under 1300 calories. My BMR is around 1900 right now. Instead of counting every single morsel, I make sure I eat more in the beginning of the day so I don't snack at night and I weigh my food if it's a fat or carb.

I'd really like to add more exercise back into the equation but I've been on my *ss for the past 2 weeks because I sprained my tailbone. It's finally better so I'm going to try doing a mile run and a 2 mile walk at least 3 times a week to start out. Weathers also clearing up for outdoor runs and I'd like to get my sweat on anyway.

But anyway, I feel like I'm at this point of my surgery journey that doesn't get talking about a lot. The pre op and right after surgery phases are talked about most but the most important part seems to be what happens after all the cool perks start dying down? Hunger comes back, or you're able to increase portions, introduce foods back, etc. I'd love to talk to others about this point just for support. I know it just comes down to tracking and movement but sometimes it does feel like you're doing it all and those numbers won't budge (they don't go up, but they don't go down). For me it's best not to obsess over the number. I can get really depressed checking my weight everyday. I'm down to checking about 3 times a month now.

Not sure what else I'm trying to say here. Just want to keep going. My first goal weight was 220 that I set for myself. I'm about 15 lbs away from it. I think once I hit 220 and maintain it for 2 months I'll set a new goal weight for 200 lbs. I think at that point I'll be ready for plastics. I'd love to have my arms tightened, my stomach skin removed and my boobs lifted. Everything else I can take or leave haha

  14. Since obesity is considered a disease, how can it be the easy way out to take the most effective treatment for it? If someone has some other disease like diabetes, no one would say they took the easy way out for taking insulin for it. There's so much fat stigma in this society. We can't win. We don't do anything about our weight, people criticize and judge us. We use an effective tool (wls) to lose weight, they also criticize and judge us and say we took the easy way out. I think part of it is that people want to feel superior and feel like obesity could never happen to them. This world would be so much better off if people would learn some empathy, and not judge each other until they've walked in each other's shoes! Sent from my Pixel 5a using BariatricPal mobile app

    Weight during preop

I know it's frustrating, but most likely this is just water weight. When you start dieting, the amount of glycogen stored in your muscles and organs drops pretty dramatically since you're not taking in enough carbs to replenish the glycogen. This depletion of glycogen also causes scale weight to drop in the form of water loss. Over time, those glycogen stores are renewed, which also causes you to put the water weight back on. This phenomenon is even worse if you also add in new exercise, as your body needs extra water in your muscles to help repair the micro damage that exercise does to your muscles. If you feel sore muscles, you can know for sure that you're storing extra water. I suspect there's another factor at work here: stress. Elevated stress levels causes you adrenal glands to make and release a hormone known as cortisol into your bloodstream. Among other things, elevated cortisol levels can actually slow down your metabolism, meaning you're burning fewer calories at rest.

If you believe surgery is not a good fit, You are right (because you know you best). It’s a huge change in your diet that you must maintain for the rest of your life after a major surgery with a very mindful recovery process. the idea of injections (i don’t have any conditions that require that) and compression socks don’t bother me like the liquid diets and recovery process… it’s a big, life altering commitment. but all that doesn’t scare me half as much as what being overweight is doing and will continue to do if i don’t shed a massive amount of weight .. Best of luck trying to find a new way of eating and exercise that will give you the life you want to live! I hope you quickly find something effective for you.
  17. When I was in nursing school in the late 90s, during my pediatric clinicals, I took care of a baby that had hundreds of seizures a day, and they put her on the keto diet to try to help. THAT'S what the keto diet was originally for, but some fad to lose weight. I wouldn't go to any surgeon who recommended ANY type of strict diet to me that left out whole food groups. Now, my surgeon did recommended very low carbs at first, but gradually adding them in. It is a very balanced approach and no food is completely off limits, in moderation, of course. I eat mostly vegetarian so that was important to me. Now, I am not a complete vegetarian and I was willing to eat some chicken and fish to get more protein after my surgery. Anyway. All surgeons are different. If you're not happy with their plan, find another doctor who is more aligned with the way you want to eat. This has to be permanent lifestyle change, and to be successful it's important to find something you can stick with long term. Some of my family does keto and it's always all or nothing with them. One minute they're totally strict, the next minute they're living on processed carbs.. It's a total diet mentality which I don't believe in. I don't want to get on my soapbox here. Just wanted to tell you that not all surgeons are gonna say you have to do keto. Sent from my Pixel 5a using BariatricPal mobile app
  18. Yes. Before I was really fat I (when I was young) wore a size 8.5 or 9 wide. After I gained all that weight I wore a 10 wide and sometimes 11. After losing my weight, my feet are back to an 8.5 or 9 wide. Unfortunately, my feet have been wide since the day I was born. I wish I could lose that too! It's wonderful buying smaller shoes though! August surgery buddies!

Hi, I had bypass 8/23. Day of surgery I was 273 then gained 3lbs during hospital stay. I am 7 days post op and I am 271. I am on liquid diet and following it very strict. Why am I not losing? Clothes feel the same and pictures look the same.

I’d talk to your program and ask them. At least then you’ll know where you stand. I’m sure the stress isn’t helping either. Hopefully since your program didn’t tell you (you must maintain or lose X) they won’t have that requirement. One thing that was very helpful for me has been working with a psychologist if you aren’t already (bonus if they have experience with weight loss). I get therapy isn’t for everyone, but it has been helping me. Unsupportive family is enough of a reason … but you are going through major surgery and life changes, it can be a help in adjusting to all of that as well.

    Weight during preop

Could the fluctuation be fluid retention or your monthly cycle? Make sure you are measuring and tracking everything so you can go over with your nutritionist at that appointment. Did your program give you a goal or an expectation? My program told me I couldn’t gain weight from my initial weigh-in, but I wasn’t required to loose.
  23. Depends your body type, genetics and where you carry your weight. I feel like for really big people (including myself and especially pre op and right after my surgery) the weight didn't come off in any specific area the most.just everything got a little smaller but still retained the same shape. I only noticed an extreme difference in face size towards the 4 month post op mark personally. Now that I'm over 100 lbs down, I'd say most of what's left is my lower abdominal region (hanging apron belly) and my thighs. I think that's the most stubborn. Weight during preop

do you think that you may not qualify because you haven’t lost weight? do not worry about that. it’s more of a formality that insurance companies put out there. I guess the thought is that overweight people have never tried to loose weight so they should try once before surgery lol have you consulted with a nutritionalist yet? that can help you prepare for the bariatric journey even if it’s not required. do you have an app or journal where you track off of your food intake? for me, this was important to gauge what i was eating and where i needed to adjust. i currently am doing a pre op keto diet and use “Carb Master” to look at all of my nutritional macros (protein/fat/carbs/calories). it helped me actually shed some weight before going down to keto low carb levels (and been fantastic since hitting that level) i will say that it is important to understand your nutritional habits and change unhealthy ones if possible before surgery to avoid issues. knowledge of self is true power in this situation! have you completed the other insurance requirements or still working on them?
  25. Good morning, I’m so frustrated. I have 2 visits left for my 6 months of Dr advised weightloss. I’m actually up in weight. I’ve tried everything: increased exercise, more produce, no soda, no added sugar, increasing fiber, only eating white meats (chicken, turkey, fish), doing 2 shakes a day and 1 meal, meditation, and getting COVID. I lost 5 pounds then even with following everything my weight went right back up. I’m beyond frustrated and worried I’m going to not qualify. I see the surgeon in a few weeks for an appointment after the EGD. Anyone else have this happen?
