I am 3 weeks post op today and haven't experienced any real nausea the whole time. But yesterday and today I am having the WORST nausea all day. I wake up and it's instant. I had to leave work early because it's been so bad today. I took 2 Zofran and it worked for less than an hour before it came back. The worst part is my new stomach isn't capable of throwing up - just dry heaving spit. I have a doctor appointment tomorrow to check it out. My question is has anyone developed nausea out of the blue? It's been hard to stay on top of eating and drinking when my stomach is flip-flopping all day 🤢

November 2022 Surgery Buddies

FYI - the fruity pebble protein powder is absolutely fantastic to me makes me feel like i had naughty cereal for breakfast instead of being on my liquid diet this week!! one more day of liquids to go before Thursday surgery!! Wednesday night I have a special bottle of pre surgery Ensure to drink along with two tylenol to prepare. Then Thursday morning I have to take an anti nausea med on the way to the hospital….. so nervous! -
You are definitely not alone. That's why I caution others not to do what I did. I just put away in a box, a zillion different protein powders, unflavored and flavored, Bariatric soup and chili packets ... Etc. I think after the first 2 weeks, I found more delicious, natural and appetizing ways to get my protein in. But here is the weird part, I still buy them from time to time if someone mentions one that I think I will like. After one serving or two servings, back in the box.

Hi all! New to the site. Scheduled for surgery on Nov 1oth in Dallas (I live just north of Dallas) - Super excited and nervous. I'm on day 5 of the 2 week liquid...Sometimes it's way easier than I thought and other times it's way hard (when my brain starts it's madness about what I 'want' or 'deserve') Glad to have others at the same stage as we go through this. -
Hi! I know where you are, hahahaha! Love it! Feel free to ask questions here or anywhere in this forum, people are great! It feels super scary, I know, I was scared, too. You'll feel better physically in a week or two, you'll be healed in 3 months. In those 3 months you'll be on the diet plans to help your tummy heal, which can be boring, but man you'll lose weight fast! Best wishes to you!!!

Food after sleeve surgery
MissMerryberry replied to Beantownposse's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Oh wow! I don't even eat steak yet and I was cleared to eat whatever I wanted 2 weeks ago! Everyone has already talked about why you shouldn't have it yet, so I won't go in to that. I wanted to tell you that while I LOVED protein shakes before surgery, they were just fine for my pre-op prep. I HATED them after, it wasn't even the taste, my stomach started reacting poorly. Fortunately, I have access to Fairlife milk and Fairlife is easy on your tummy because its lactose free AND it has higher protein per serving than regular milk, its a great protein shake replacement if you are still in a mostly liquids stage and need to get your protein in! I was drinking three 8-10 oz glasses of Fairlife Lowfat milk a day, until just recently because I can now have protein bars and other solid forms of protein. The shakes or the milk are SUPER important to make sure your body gets enough protein until you are cleared for solid foods. When I was in the pureed stage my go-tos were refried beans with a little cheese and taco sauce on them (still eat that now!), cottage cheese, low fat/low sugar greek yogurt, Protein 2 O (its a protein water!), and Fairlife milk. Good job on your progress, take care of your new little tummy! -
So just came back from my surgeons office for the 6 month follow up. Vitamins all looked great. My iron has gone back up to normal levels. But unfortunately 1 blood test did not and actually is higher than when i personally had it tested a week before which is something called Bilirubin. So they are ordering 1st an ultrasound to see if there are any stones or blockage in the gallbladder. After that if it shows nothing then they are going to do a HIDA scan to check function. Shall see how it goes. but they were impressed with the weight loss in 6 months. They did tell me to eat more lol

HI, Has any one had stomach flu after your Gastric Sleeve? I ask because I came down with the Stomach flu on 10/26 and I am still dealing with painful cramps and Diarrhea. I ended up in the emergency room for dehydration and pain. They ct scanned and my sleeve was fine. Hydrated me up and sent me home with medicine for the cramps. Anytime a eat anything it goes straight through me. I have had stomach flu be for and it was no where near as bad as this. I am really not getting much support from my surgent on this either. I went and seen my regular doctor and same, Stomach Flu. Seems odd that I have had it for 1 week now. I'm I being overly concerned? Is this normal? I have been stressing out over this because I have lost 4 lb in one week, because everything just runs through me. Any help would be greatly appriciated Thank you!

Hi there! My surgery was July 11th and I was 3 months post op about 2 weeks ago. It is so weird to not be on an assigned restricted diet. I know we have to watch out for soft breads, dry or tough meats, fibrous vegetables, stringy fruits, rice and noodles - but that doesn't feel like "follow this plan" type of stuff anymore. I kinda feel a bit lost and while I'm trying new things, I'm sticking to a lot of the things I'm used to. Oh! I tried 2 pieces of candy - they weren't even fun size, they were the ones that are just like a little square - I really wasn't impressed with them and I don't think I care about candy anymore at all. For reference I tried 3 Musketeers and Snickers, most people eat them in two bites each, I broke it down to 3-4 bites each. The rest of the night last night, while handing out candy, if I felt hungry (this is after dinner) I snacked on Toasted Sesame flavored seaweed, its good! Crunchy and light, with a bit of a nutty flavor, I learned about it from the instagram account theguacwarddietitian - she has awesome videos for recipes, foods to get from the store, (especially Trader Joe's), and other really upbeat and positive motivation stuff! Oh, so I've been eating a lot of foods that I started eating on the "easy to chew" step of my plan, which was the last step before normal foods. I just started adding beef though, I dunno I had this thing in my head that it wasn't "easy to chew?" or it was harder to digest? I'm weird! I tried eating a hamburger patty, I can only eat like 1/3 of it, and I serve it on top of lettuce/tomato/pickle and put ketchup/mayo on it. Its a mess but tasty I also added eating like 2 mini squares max (a serving is 4 squares) of Ghiradelli dark chocolate mini squares - SO MUCH BETTER THAN CRAPPY HALLOWEEN CANDY! I started losing weight in March, I lost 30 lbs before surgery and since July 11th I've lost 57 - I'd say 57 in a 3 1/2 months is pretty good! But a total of 87 since I started practicing healthy eating habits in March! I don't measure myself but I have gone from a women's size 24/26 or 3X (mens 1X) to a women's 18/20 or 1X (men's XL). So I'm pretty happy about that, too! 1st Pic - me in Jan 2022 (325) 2nd Pic - me in May 2022 (approx 305) 3rd Pic - me last week, Oct 2022 (240)

Well, obviously I'm in the minority here, and that's fine. I do feel like corn tortillas may be getting a bad rap? While they certainly aren't the most nutritious food in the world, they are a whole grain complex carbohydrate that contains fiber, as well as several vitamins and minerals. They are typically low in calories (roughly 50 per tortilla), low in fat and are especially high in zinc. Compared to plain flour tortillas, corn tortillas are definitely the better choice. Note that some of the most protein rich dinners I'm eating right now are tacos and enchiladas, so I don't see a problem with them at all as long as you eat them with protein. I also don't get the safety concern. They are made from ground hominy (typically finely ground), and are pretty homogeneous. They are also easy to chew. Also, unlike wheat flour products, they don't tend to "gum up" in the guts. Maybe I'm missing something there, but these should be fine? For the record, at 4 weeks, my plan said to: "focus on low-fat solid foods". A corn tortilla is certainly a low-fat solid food. I was also supposed to eat "protein first, then vegetables and fruit, and limit grains and starchy foods". No foods were specifically off limits at 4 weeks or later. Tortillas definitely fall into the "grains and starchy foods" part, but I probably only eat a few tortillas a week. I'm pretty sure that qualifies as "limiting them". As far as I'm concerned, it's all about balance and these work for me.

8.5 POST OP FROM GASTRIC BYPASS!!!!! ~ Diary ~
This is just for myself although feel free to read if you're interested in the journey - I haven't logged into this forum in a while. I've been super busy in a good way. I'm still losing weight albeit very slowly which I'm not unhappy with. I've dropped about 7 lbs since last updating this.
I am able to eat pretty normally again and rarely do I get the foamies. I'm soooo close to reaching an overweight BMI category which has been my goal for a while. .5 points away! My new goal is to reach a BMI of 28. I think I'll sit comfortably at 28 given my large frame and height. To achieve this, I will consume protein shakes once a day with at least 30 grams. I'll get the rest through my food, limit consumption of simple carbs and fatty foods. I will drink 64 ox of water a day and go on a 2 mile fast walk 3-4 times a week, one workout video at home 1 time a week, and 1 jog once a week, probably on the weekend afternoons. I will also improve my sleep hygiene, get a more comfortable mattress and make my bed every day.
I really want to be conscious of my calories without overwhelming myself or triggering maladaptive eating behavior. I feel what works for me is counting calories of foods that aren't really part of my eating plan. For me, no foods are off limits but I need to be mindful of the foods that don't necessarily put my closer to my goals while still enjoying them. Paying attention to their servings sizes, my portions and logging the nutrients and calories will be a good middle ground to log my food.
I also feel that overloading myself with work will make this harder so I need to be mindful about how many things I say yes to. Keeping a very clean home and workspace will help me a lot and cutting out unnecessary distractions and drama.
I have a lot of hope for myself. I think this small goal forward is really good for me. If I think about it logically - it'll work. Right now I have my goals in food, water, movement, work, and home. I think I'm ready! : )

That sounds great! Lots of yummy flavors. My program has us using 3 shakes a day even in the puree phase. 6 weeks/soft food I can bring it down to 2/day. 6 months/solid food I can go down to 1 shake but that continues for a year. Then it's whatever we feel like. So for right now I can only do 2 meals a day that are real food (supposed to have 5 meals/day). I know I'm gonna be sick of protein shakes by the end of it all. lol I had my breakfast protein shake today and will be eating my first puree at lunch time! Wooo hooo!

October 2022 surgery support
Momsaysimaoops replied to KimA-GA's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I thought it would be nice to bring the subject up of giving yourself time to heal after surgery. I've lost 10 kg since surgery on October 17th, just over 20lbs. But I noticed my clothes arent really fitting much different around my middle. So I measured. I'm losing everywhere but my tummy is actually up a few cm. (about an inch) I figure this is because im still swollen and my muscles are inflamed from the laparoscopy. I have to remind myself , I am only two weeks out. Slow and steady wins the race. I just want to share in case someone is feeling discouraged by similar experiences. it's totally normal! We just had a big surgery, even if we are feeling good. We arent healed yet. -
There are plenty of other choices for protein other than protein shakes that won't rip your sutures or injure your staple line. Lots of pureed foods and soft foods like cottage cheese, beans, ricotta cheese, greek yogurt, hummus and more that are high protein. Steak after 10 days post-op is simply dangerous. A piece of steak won't make up for 10 days of having no protein at all. It is about safety. Give your stomach 6 to 8 weeks to heal. I hope your doctor explained all this to you.

I’d think no at four weeks. First you’re still healing. Secondly, your focus should be in getting in your protein & not filling up or restricting how much protein you can eat. Thirdly, they contain quite a few carbs which we’re often advised to keep low. Fourthly, are they on your allowed food list? But best to do is contact your surgeon &/or your dietician.

Oh yeah it happens. You know the old wanting something even more when you can’t have it. Plus not everyone loses their hunger or desire to eat after surgery. Try to find things to distract you. Go for a short walk, read, watch a show or movie, play a game, craft, check your social media or this forum. Anything that takes your mind off food at least for a little while. Even having a warm drink (like herbal or green tea) can help. I hope these next weeks are better for you. It does really get easier.

I am seeing others who aren't required to do the two weeks either but then there are others who are required to do it. So I am just following what my surgeon told me to do which is the two weeks. I think either way is going to be good, just depends on the surgeon. -
Going on 3 weeks in this stupid stall
SleeveToBypass2023 replied to SleeveToBypass2023's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Well, I've lost 82 in 6 months. If I wasn't in a 3 week stall, I probably could have gotten there. Stupid stall.... -
2nd week in and I didn't do well last week. I'm struggling and thinking about food all the time. Is this normal? Sent from my SM-A505U using BariatricPal mobile app

I understand your concern - took me years to get my endocrine issues diagnosed because I wasn’t cookie cutter either. My endocrinologist is amazing working with my weight, thyroid and other issues. Find a good one and I would bet they can be supportive and helpful - even if it’s not 100% fixed. Take one breath at a time and I can’t imagine you’ve blown your chance - at worst let’s hope this is just a side step and you will soon be back on track. Let us know how things are going. My progress has been slow and tedious, but between the looooong stalls - I am still making baby steps forward I’m getting there. You will too!!!

Thank you! I will look into the compression sleeves also. The first week was such a blur I don’t even know if I thought it through. He said just ace until drains are out but, just a sleeve should be okay since it won’t affect any drains. I’ll check. Let’s hope some of these 7 drains come out Friday. 🤞🏻

Going on 3 weeks in this stupid stall
KimA-GA replied to SleeveToBypass2023's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
my body does that too!! i will stall for days/weeks then all of a sudden i will have a drop of 5-15 lbs over a couple of days (the 15 lb drop was fantastic lol) …. i also (tmi) notice that i go pee a lot more for a day or so before a stall ends -
I guess I'm the weirdo that found the pre-op diet easy and struggle more now post-surgery. Let me explain my theory on why: I actually started a restricted calorie diet about 4 months pre-surgery. I then started substituting a shake for one meal a day about a month before the pre-op diet. I feel like doing both of these allowed me to ease into the pre-op diet without missing a beat? My pre-op diet, by the way was full liquids. No meals. I knew from previous experience with drastic dietary changes, I'd likely regret it if I didn't ease into it, so that's why I did what I did. The biggest challenge for me pre-op was actually just dealing with my emotions. I was constantly worried something would delay the surgery I'd been waiting so long for. Now that I'm ~6 weeks post-op and "allowed" to eat anything, I find my head-hunger talking over sometimes. I didn't have this pre-op because it was so restricted. I basically had no choice in what I was eating then. Now however, I find myself sometimes making bad food choices. I'm not actually hungry at all and so when I do feel like eating, I gravitate toward things that sound good, rather than are good for me.

Going on 3 weeks in this stupid stall
SleeveToBypass2023 replied to SleeveToBypass2023's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The last time I had a 2 week stall, I came out of it and dropped 9 pounds in a week, then 4 pounds the following week, then my body freaked out lol When I lose slowly, my body is ok. But when I lose a lot quickly, my body freaks out and I hit a stall. I know it, I recognize it, but it still sucks LOL -

SpartanMaker replied to SleeveToBypass2023's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Sorry you're going through that and sorry you missed that goal (it was a nice goal), but at least you're better prepared for understanding stalls than a lot of folks. That said, even when we intellectually know the reasons these things happen, our emotional selves still get frustrated! I've written a few times on here why physiologically stalls happen, but I still had the same emotional reaction when, like clockwork, I hit the dreaded week 3 stall.
