    Happy New Year

Hiiiiiiii!!! HAPPY NEW YEAR DOUBLE VEES! Yes, we have all been off and running doing this and that - as for me I am back to posting. I've been away far too long and I do believe that adversly affected my goals and weight loss. It was so nice having a special forum here for those starting the road at the same time as me. This New Year has brought on me a whole new strength within, and I am going to try my very hardest to let this be the year I see my goal! We can do it! ...and most importantly - Congratulations to all our successes so far!
  2. I'm a patient of Dr. Gantas here in Austin. I was sleeved on 1/14/14 and I could not be happier. Dr. G is so supportive and knowledgable. He has been chief of surgery all over the world literally. I attend a weight loss group monthly here in Austin and I would say he is one of the most respected doctors for professionalism and bedside manner before and after surgery here in the bariatric community. I attribute a large part of my success to his struck rigiman. I could not be more great flu to him. I was lucky and did not endure a single problem post op, but a lot of my friends at the weight loss meetings who see him and did have problems post op say he is very good at aggressively treating any issues that would arise. Also when you call after hours and leave a message he personally calls you back. I actually did this on a Sunday a week after surgery. It really impresses me how involved with patient care he is. Good luck in your decision.

    Nervous Wreck

I'm so sorry to hear about your loss.. But this comment is very inappropriate. Especially someone who is already nervous about surgery. Maybe get doc wasn't a good doc. Don't know your reasons but this was not a good comment.

    Throwing Up Daily.

I am a bit confused...why would he be reluctant to give a fill if you had ONLY lost 20 lbs in 8 weeks? There are several inconsistencies there. First, band patients should expect 1-2 lbs per week loss. You were above that. So I could see being reluctant because you were losing so well. If he thought you were losing too slowly, then I'd expect him to be eager to give you a fill to help you lose faster....? The fact that you are too tight after a fill you requested is not your fault, we (the patient, nor the doctor) have any way of knowing how we will react to a fill. Following the no food in the classroom I get. But there is no other time you can have a small nutritious snack? Eating something healthful in front of the children could make you a roll model, especially as to get fit and lose weight. If you are getting so hungry that you are causing yourself to eat too fast, then perhaps a note from your doctor that you'll need to eat a small something between classes will help you. Going from 5:30 am until noon is a very long stretch, especially when many of us cannot eat much if anything first thing in the morning.

    Gallbladder

Yes, I had my lapband surgery on 8/27/07. Lost 51 lbs. in 5 weeks. Then I had my first gallbladder attack and my lap surgeon had to remove my gallbladder on 10/1/07. Two major surgeries in 5 weeks. I am almost healed and ready to roll and not even two weeks out from the gallbladder surgery. Definitely Sucks! But now things are looking better! Rapid Weight Loss was the cause but doc said I would have lost it 6 months down the road anyway.

Cold feet or wrong choice ????

It's normal to have cold feet close to your surgery. I think you need to think about the reasons you decided to have a band in the beginning and the reasons you think a sleeve might be better now and then do a Pros & Cons list to clarify your thinking. For myself, I started out wanting a band because all I knew was band and bypass. When I heard about the sleeve, my immediate reaction was that it was too permanent. I liked the fact that you could take the band out if something went wrong. But over time, as I did my research, I came to realize that *all* WLS is permanent, even the band. I also came to realize that people only get bands taken out when the bands do bad things -- things that other surgeries don't have to deal with because there is no mechanical device implanted in your body. In the meantime, it became clear that insurance would not pay for my surgery. As a self-pay, the idea of having to pay for a band and then pay to take it out and then pay for a different surgery was too scary. Unfortunately, the odds of this happening were too high for me to think "oh that will never happen to ME". Recently released figures show that anywhere from 25-40% of people with bands end up with a re-surgery. They don't all end up losing or replacing their bands, but a lot of them do. Those odds are too high for me to be comfortable with. So I gave the sleeve a second look and, when I learned more about it, I was sold. Advantages I see for the sleeve: -Removes the part of the stomach that makes ghrelin, the hunger hormone (so you don't have a ravenous appetite) -Removes the stretchy part of the stomach so regain due to the stomach getting too big over time is not an issue -Stomach is fully functional, so no dumping as with bypass, and Vitamin supplementing is not as critical (though you still need to do some, particularly calcium). Also, there is no stoma so food doesn't get "stuck" per se (as it does with lap-band and bypass) -Long-term risks are minimal; much less than lap-band. -True restriction from day one - no living in Bandster's Hell while trying to find your sweet spot, no getting your sweet spot and then losing it, no never finding the sweet spot so you are basically just dieting (which you can do without a band) -Better average excess weight loss than the band, similar to bypass Advantages to the band: -Adjustable (if your sleeve is too small or too big, oh well) -Less short-term risk (no risk of leaks or strictures in the first 3 months) Hope that helps!
  7. "In your post, please share information about yourself such as age, gender, marital status, occupation, geographical location, amount of weight lost, amount of weight to lose, etc." HI! I was banded 12/31/08 and have my first fill 2/03/09. I have lost 19 pounds of my 129 pound goal. I am 36, female in a long term relationship. I live in MO and work as an analyst in the finance industry. I think that answers all the questions above. I am looking for a female mentor in her 30's who's weight loss goal was over 100 pounds similar to mine. Someone who has been there and done that and kicked butt! THANKS!

    Hair Loss . . . Really?

Hi Marko! I would not worry so much about hair loss. It does happen to some, especially when your body goes through "trauma" such as a dramatic weight loss. But because we are losing weight pretty slow, I haven't seen anything too bad. My hair stylist actually got the band about six years ago, and since she knows so much about hair, I asked her for me. She told me that, if it happens, it will probably happen some time between month 3 and 6 post-op, and that DON'T WORRY, because this time, the hair WILL grow back! So no matter what, the hair you lose after surgery DOES grow back. Depending on age, it may not grow in as thick, but it will come back. I would take being healthy over having all my hair any day. Good luck on your weight loss journey!

    Triangular When Full

Also, Dr. Ponce did a study with the Lapband (older generation) published in 03 or 04 I believe with excess weight loss at 62%.I would question why is using the Realize band with published data at 43% when he himself did a study with the lapband and published his data of 62%. Wasn't he the doctor that was feautured on the Realize Band Website?

    Hi!

Hi, I'm new to this... so I hope I'm doing this right. I've never really used a forum so this is a new experience for me. Seems there is so much useful information I've looked around and plan to keep looking. I am scheduled for surgery March 5th, 2009. I started this process back in July. I am so excited that it's finally happening. I had originally planned on bypass, but unfortunately I have Crohn's so my only option is lapband. I have been on every diet there is, I was successful and then failed eventually. I have ballooned up to 500 lbs and I am not well at all. I have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, Crohn's disease, arthritis in both of my knees, I had a subtalar joint fusion back in February and have been pretty immobile ever since. I have had five surgeries on this ankle, and the doctor thinks I need another, I'm not excited about this :wink2: but will face it as it comes. Weight loss is the key to every single one of these conditions so lapband is the answer to the rest of my life. Aside from that, I have two beautiful nieces who are the second inspiration for my surgery, I want to be around to watch them grow up and walk down the aisle. If you wanna message me, please do... if you wanna talk to me on any messenger please let me know, I'll give you my screen name. I also make vids on youtube: www.youtube.com/user/2thousandand9 that is a new account and only has one vid on it, there will be more to come after my surgery. Ok, this is really long... so I'll stop here! Have a great day, and a Happy New Year! Best of luck to anyone with coming up surgeries. Take Care!

What I did about my hair loss...

Congrats on finding something that works great for you! That must be so exciting! AND to have family to help! WooHoo! I couldn't swing it. I lost a lot and was getting worried. It never came out in clumps, as far as ending up with baldspots, so that was nice. BUT I've started some iron supplements to go with my protein and Biotin and that seems to be working. It's still coming out but only about half as much as it was. Still too much in my opinion but I can see it getting better. Because of the Biotin, I'm seeing new growth too so that's nice. Hang in there and enjoy your new hair! Your own hair should come back eventually! Thanks for sharing!

What I did about my hair loss...

Tiffany-pictures for you . I had to take the "afters" myself, we forgot to take official before pics, and regretted it. Most of my hair loss was around my face so the thicker hair transformed my face-taking several pounds off of it. The before (me and one of my best friends) was not taken to show my hair, but the best I could do. I am at a very similar weight when these pictures were taken, I only weigh 8 pounds more in the pics then I do in my afters. I also had much thinner hair then when this pic was taken but it was a little longer. -give an idea of what hair can do.
  15. I dont know an awful lot about the sleeve and the band has worked fantastically well for me. BUT - if I were in the US and coping with the insane medical system you have, I would be very very strongly leaning towards a sleeve due to less intensive aftercare. Here, if you need a fill, you get it, it costs nothing, if you get a bit tight, you go back, you get a bit out, it still costs nothing, and if the following week you decide you really WERENT too tight, then you go back and it costs nothing. The surgeon is a few suburbs away, you dont have to fly interestate or out of the country, if you get banded by one surgeon and then move, you wont have another surgeon refusing to treat you because you werent originally his patient, etc etc etc. Sleeves are becoming more popular in Western Australia because its a simply ENORMOUS state and people are coming from very remote rural areas for banding. The less follow up required, the easier. When the band works well, it works very very well. YOu need to consider your strenghts and weaknesses. You need a fair bit of mettle to work a band and lose weight really successfully. You need to be preapred to eat right, to exercise, etc. Basically you have to do whatever you would have to lose weight before hand, it just makes it easier. Which I would hazard a guess to say that is true of ANY weight loss surgery. The band CAN be very difficult for some people and they struggle to find good restriction etc. That would be my thinking if I lived in your country. Other than that I cant comment. I am banded and it's suited me really really well, but obviously its super duper easy to manage a lapband and the required aftercare here. I dont think reversibility is such an issue really, not from my perspective three years down the track. I needed WLS to get the weight off and I need my band to keep it off. I would never in a million years remove it unless absolutely necessary and THEN I would convert to another surgery in a heartbeat. So yeah, that wouldnt be a huge issue to me.

    Throwing Up Daily.

I really think you have to find another surgeon. I was given a full and complete plan 'before' my surgery. It is about as thick as small book and outlines everything I should be eatting from stage 1 through stage 5. Including menus on the back. No one is perfect, we all make mistakes.. I am very early on and do not know a lot, I have joined this forum back in December and learn from others, its really does put things into perspective. I am sure I too will make mistakes down the road. Right now I am very much scared of my band, and do follow my surgeons rules as I hope that I will always do, but like I said we are all only human and will make mistakes. I wish you the best of luck, you have come to the right place for moral support, guidiance, and encourangement. I for one think you are doing a great job with your weight loss! -Patty

Why? Because I can't eat normally.

Yay for you! When I had 20 lbs. left to lose I decided to try and do it by eating a sensible, balanced diet like a healthy, fit person (versus the low carb/high protein I lost the first 70 lbs. with). My weight loss has definitely slowed down (1-2 pounds per week) so I might go back to the low carb diet just so I can accelerate these last few pounds. I too, just WANT TO BE NORMAL. Good luck!

    Onderland :)

You look great!! As a side note, i just had my hair done today. It's like yours but i have bangs. I'm at 11 weeks and my hair is falling out. She showed me that having a straight part will show more of the bald spots. Instead, Criss cross your hair over the part so it looks like a zig zag pattern, not a straight line. It really works!! And have long layers so the hair doesn't lay heavy on the scalp.
  20. I would have to agree, ditch the soups and you should see some loss. Good luck!
  21. i was wondering what y'all have done that made a huge difference in your weight loss following the band placement. I am currently about 100lbs overweight and am going to a meeting tomorrow night to learn more. i am well researched and am leaning toward the surgery and would like some guidance. love the forums and the support.

    Your Ah-ha Moment?

Hey, betrthnever, we have the same band birthday! I would love to keep up with you and your weight loss - may help to see someone else loosing weight, and compare what we are each doing.
  24. Thenewme070909

are you happy you did it?

Heidsz, The answer is absolutely! I was banded last July 9th. Since then I have lost 72lb and only 38lbs to goal. For me is has been as simple as follow the rules, do what the docs ask of you, and it works. It is not a magical cure. You can eat "around" the band, ie ice cream, chips, candy bars, are all still easy to eat. If you will eat normal foods and and not graze you WILL lose weight. You will need to eventually increase your physical activity. If will do this you will be sucessful. Take control of your own future weight loss and good luck!

Hello and welcome, I have had no problem with the lap band - however i haven't been at my sweet spot yet, i coasted for a while after initial weight loss then when i decided to get serious again I was following weight watchers. I have not put back on any weight that I have lost in a year which I think is absolutely thrilling. I intend to get to my sweet spot as I am going for a fill in a few weeks, had to partially defill prior to jaw surgery several weeks ago. I haven't been eating very much the last few weeks and have lost about 10 pounds so I'm not sure how the band impacts weight loss if one isn't eating - seems to be the same as without a band. good luck and hope you get more responses for support.
