  1. Hi everyone! I've been a silent reader of these forums and have found a lot of answers and inspiration in here that helped me a lot along my weight loss journey. This is my first post and just wanted to first thank you for sharing your experiences and stories and to share mine as well. Hopefully this will inspire someone to take the decision. I had my surgery on 30 January 2022 and I'm glad I did. I'm going to be 40 in September and I've always been overweight. I've tried several diets, lost and gained a lot of weight. The last diet I've tried was Keto diet back in 2019. I was able to lose 25 Kg. Then Covid-19 came, the lockdowns and having to work from home. I gained all the weight back and some more 😥. Fast forward to January 2022. My sister (who is also overweight) was in Egypt on a business trip. She met one of her classmates in there who lost almost half of her weight and looked unrecognizable. My sister's friend recommended that she consult the same surgeon that did her mini gastric bypass surgery. After visiting that surgeon, my sister decided to have the surgery by mid January 2022. We talked about it and I discussed with the surgeon over Skype and made the arrangements to have mine by end of January 22. I had my surgery on 30 January 22 and stayed in the hospital for two days. I then flew back to Malaysia a week after. My starting weight was 149 Kg and my current is 103 Kg. I'm super happy with my decision and consider that to be my 40th birthday gift to myself. I feel and look amazing and I'm able to do a lot of the things that I've always wanted to do but couldn't because of my weight. I even got myself a mountain bike that I ride every night around my house. I hope I will be down to two-digits weight just in time for my 40th birthday! I'm planning to join a gym next month which will hopefully help with loose skin and speed up the weight loss. I've started a list of all of the things that I've always wanted to do but couldn't and I'm really excited to tick as items much as I can.

Will I ever be hungry again???

yes. Most of us do lose our hunger for awhile, and for the vast majority, it returns sometime during the first year. For me, it came back at five months out - and to be honest, I wish it never had. Although it was bizarre to get used to never being hungry, it was never in my life easier to lose weight those first few months when I was never hungry and didn't give a flip about food.

    August surgery buddies!

6 days post-op here, and after a really rough outside-the-bell-curve start, I've been doing quite well since getting home. Sure, pains here, aches there, but better each day. And the water retention finally went down enough that after nearly a week, I'm back down to just under my weight immediately before the surgery. Let the pounds melt off! Because I'm moving in just under a month (*gulp*), I'm going through and donating or throwing out a lot of things. My strong almost-18 daughter is doing all the lifting. I usually do organizing, decision making, and anything light. Today I started in on the kitchen. I figure it's a good time to pack the pantry because A) most things are expired and need to be tossed anyway, and B) there's stuff I can't eat in the next month (but can once I'm on bari regular after the move). My daughter pretty much only eats stuff from the fridge and freezer anyway. Feels good to be shedding kitchen weight along with my body weight.

    August surgery buddies!

Sounds about right. I've gained and lost 150+ pounds at 3 points in my life, and whenever I dropped like a stone, I'd hit a plateau. I think it especially makes sense in light of not hitting your protein goals... I keep hearing that's hard for people who don't like protein shakes (understandable). I hit my 65 just barely with 2 protein shakes + Greek yogurt, and it feels like I'm setting timers all day to either be eating or hydrating so I don't forget. Anyway, I totally wouldn't stress about the stall. I'm sure it will start coming off again soon.

Stall - revision sleeve to bypass

How much have you lost since your revision? Sometimes during stalls, we don't lose pounds, but we are losing inches. I think it also depends on how much weight you have to lose. The less you have to lose, the slower weight loss can be. And stalls can happen all along the weight loss journey. I think they're a normal part of the process. It's our bodies/metabolisms adapting to the changes our bodies are going through. I'm only 6 weeks post op Band to Bypass revision. But I seem to be a slower loser than those with virgin bypasses. My restriction is there, depending on what I eat. Of course I feel it more with denser proteins. Compared to my Band, the Bypass seems to feel completely natural, unlike my Band. When I was able to start exercising, and increased my calories a bit, I noticed the scale started moving better. I hope to be released tomorrow to be able to lift weights again, I know that will also help me more. Best Wishes!
  6. I had a sleeve revision to bypass in mid April. Weight was coming off and I could feel restriction although very different from sleeve. Fast forward to now (4 mos) and I’ve been stalled for a month & restriction seems nonexistent. I am aware restriction goes away after a period of time but did not expect this fast. Anyone gone through the same & can offer tips? Thanks

    3 days Post Surgery

Proton Pump Inhibitor. Aka acid controller/reducer. A lot of surgeons prescribe them for a few months after weight loss surgery to reduce the amount of acid that your stomach produces until you're fully healed.

    August surgery buddies!

I think I know what’s going on and I just wanted to check in to see if this sounds like others experience. I lost about 10 pounds pre-op liquid (despite getting my period the day before surgery). I had also been loosing weight prior to starting the liquid diet. The first week after surgery I dropped 23 pounds! I started purées This past Wednesday and I’ve been struggling with my protein goals and my calories are a little low - trying to make sure I stay hydrated has been my priority and I’m having trouble getting it all I haven’t really lost any weight since starting purées, but I’m assuming the big drop initially and not hitting protein and calorie goals - my body is in a stall until I can work that out. Does that sound right? I’m hoping as I go through the next week - I can adjust and see some movement. I’m trying not to stress about it because I know this can happen - I just wasn’t expecting it quite yet. Any advice?

    Get ready to blossom

The big initial weight loss is fluid weight. You won't see it that much in photos. I also use the baritastic app and records measurements. I noticed inches going down much more then I seen it in any photos. Watch the inches, you will be pleasantly surprised.

    Under Boob rash

Congratulations on the weight loss! I have saggy boobs now that most of the weight is off, so I get the rashes too. Like above posters said, figure the root cause, get the particular thing that treats the cause. I have used Triple Cream, from the baby isle, for extreme situations. For basic prevention I have found anti perspirant deodorant (expensive) or cheap drug store/chemist petroleum scented with lavender works well in all the skin on skin situations that cause rash. Both my mother and grandmother were nurses and said during the 1960’s to “never use powders ‘down there’ if you’re female because it causes cancer in people with vaginas.” So use the cream of your choice. Anti fungals for feet are the same as for privates. The private version is 2x stronger and the men’s is the same as the woman’s but cheaper. Also Dollar Tree version works fine too. Sorry for the long message. Unless you have surgery or have great genes or youth, the saggy skin still makes rashes. Don’t use powder near your vajaja, Congratulations on your weight loss! I hope you find relief soon, and you are not alone.

    69 yrs old and unsure..

I had my sleeve done nine months ago, aged 62. I walked with a stick, had severe shortage of breath, high blood pressure and was told 11 months before surgery that I was diabetic. I am a carer for my husband and there were times when he was having to care for me. Things had to change. I never realised that loosing weight would have made such a huge difference. I gallop through chores, walk miles and have endless energy. The diabetes and blood pressure went within a few months. The only pills I take now are for Fibromyalgia. The only downside to being overweight and being my age is the loose skin. I will need more surgery .

I am in my 60s. I just recently had a revision WLS. I will speak mainly about my first WLS since revision was made for other reasons. For the first few months, the post-op diet does feel like a sacrifice. Especially the liquid phase. Not actually physically since I had decreased hunger but more mentally, emotionally since eating was never really about physical hunger to me. After the first few months, things normalized. I was able to eat whatever I wanted, just a much smaller amount and social eating was pleasant again. Because of the rapid weightloss, and the positive feelings of losing weight, it was much easier for me to transition to a healthier diet naturally. Was the the weight loss worth it and did it offset the sacrifice? Absolutely. I feel so much younger now being able to move as my body intended. Most health issues resolved too. I would do it again and again in a heartbeat.

I'm not quite your age, but still in the "boomer" set. I can't tell you if you should or shouldn't have bariatric surgery, only you can decide that. I did want to point out that if you approach bariatric surgery as something that will "feel like a sacrifice", this may not be for you. Instead, I would suggest you think about the things you are currently sacrificing at your current weight. Are you sacrificing your health? Are you sacrificing activities with family and friends? The only people I've met that regret bariatric surgery are the ones that didn't think of it as a life changing opportunity to fix their relationship with food. If you have the surgery and go right back to eating junk, you may regret having it done because you won't attain your goals. in the event you are wondering if it's safe and effective "at your age", I'll leave you with some studies: https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s11695-019-03718-6 https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1550728922001605 https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1111/ggi.12527 https://europepmc.org/article/med/30175564

    August surgery buddies!

Good morning from bed, next to my sweet pibble mix (who finally got her fill of cuddles)! Yesterday went really well. I had to set timers and plan carefully, but I hit both my protein and water target. I’m so-so on the protein shake taste, but I really like the puréed soups I got (3 flavors). I lost 2 pounds in the last day, so I’m nearly back down to my weight on Monday morning before surgery (I had a lot of water retention… still a little puffy but getting there). Tomorrow I may hit a low for the year, then it’s all down from there. :)
  16. I'm 69 and have a BMI of 36. Been gaining weight continuously my adult life. I'm OK'd for sleeve surgery mid september. Can anyone with a similar age and BMI tell me their experience. Do you regret making the decision this late in life. Have the post op diet restrictions felt like a sacrifice. Did the 30% weight loss offset those the diet changes. Any insight that would help me make a more informed decision is appreciated. Thank you

    August surgery buddies!

I made it guys! Sleeved on 8/25, felt icky in the recovery room, but luckily no major nausea since. I stayed overnight and was released last night. Very sore and it’s been a challenge drinking. Now cleared to do protein shakes along with other clear stuff. Up 4 lbs from surgery weight, but chalking it up to fluid retention. Definitely not as bad as I expected. Hope everyone is doing well!

Is it loose skin or fat?

I agree with the person who mentioned a body scan. if you really want to know, a DEXA scan will give you a lot of info. NOT the kind they do at medical clinics - that will only give you bone density. It's the kind you can get at a sports lab or one of those commercial outfits like DEXAfit. It gives you not only bone density, but also body composition - as in how much of your weight is fat vs muscle vs bone. The commercial places charge around $100-150 for a scan. Sports labs at universities are often cheaper. I had one when I got to 146 lbs and wasn't sure if I should stop or keep going. According to the scan, I had 22% body fat, which is kind of lean for a woman, so the tech (and later, my PCP) said it was time to stop losing...I was at a really good weight (odd since I figured I could have lost another 10-20 lbs!)

Is it loose skin or fat?

@SpartanMaker is correct. There will always be a layer of fat under your skin. It’s something we need. So even under the loose skin there will be some fat which is why it is hard to tell. How thick (dense) the skin is if you pinch it may give you a bit of an idea of how much fat is left in that area. And pinch different areas around your body to compare as we carry our larger deposits of fat in different areas of our body. Have a chat with your surgeon or get a referral to a plastic surgeon & ask their opinion. If you are thinking about having the loose skin removed, they’ll likely advise to wait until your weight has been stable for a while. If you are just curious as to how much fat you have left, yes a body fat or dexa scan is your best bet.
  20. Ya know I knew I was big, but didn't realize I was THAT big. I've lost half of my weight to lose to get to goal (315 HW 236CW 165GW) and finally I see the difference. Suddenly I'm more confident wearing clothes that I wouldn't have worn before. I dont fear clothes showing my belly or butt when I move. Its an amazing NSV. I don't feel all that smaller but I guess 79 lbs is a big chunk off of me. Only 71 more to go!

    Men are so frustrating!!!!

I'm trying to understand the situation... I recall some time back you said that your husband didn't want you to lose weight because he likes bigger women. So is it possible that he is becoming slack on housework (purposefully) and this is his way of attempting to sabotage your success or at least throw road blocks in your path to success? He is becoming lazier since you had surgery and are losing weight. I may be wrong, but that's what I feel like might be going on. I have a cousin that had weight loss surgery when her marriage was on the rocks, her ex was former military and had major ptsd and other issues, and to make a long story short, the stress and emotional/mental abuse that he inflicted upon her negatively effected her weight loss. Now she's almost 3 years out and never made it to goal weight.

    Surgery tomorrow morning

This will be my 15th surgery I think? (Obviously not weight loss surgery, but lots and lots of other body parts have needed repair. 😁) It's super normal to be feeling anxious right now. I was worried about every one, and I'm not a worrier. Heck, I'm worried right now about my bypass and I still have 3 and a half weeks to go!

    Men are so frustrating!!!!

OMG Sleeve , I had to check the ID on your post to check it wasn't me that hadn't written about it and forgot !! I have also been married for 17 years ,I was the worker - he stayed home and was a house husband .Well the years have gone by and now he does absolutely nothing .I mean nothing ! He sits at his laptop gaming all day , only getting up to eat , smoke , and go to the toilet .That's it .He doesn't even walk the dog when I can't .He gets a 74 year old neighbour to do it .He is 55 and weighs 308 Ibs and he could really do with a sleeve .He eats junk food all day in between smoking .It has got to the point (and I only had my surgery on the 17th August ) where he doesn't care if the dog's water bowl isn't fresh , he still expects me to bend down and refill despite the hernia repair and sleeve op .In fact prob like you ,I have had to put the washing in and do all the jobs to keep the house going - if I ask him to do the tiniest thing he has a strop . Ugh .I know exactly how you feel .We both want new starts but our husbands are almost making it far harder than it actually is .He is already saying "well I might have had one of those sleeves but look at what I'm eating now and you're going hungry ." I am going to lose this weight ,despite his negativity ,then I'm going to have gather some self esteem and consider what on earth my future will be like .There has to be a better way forward than this - for both of us Sleeve X

    May Surgeries - check in!

Whelp, you can tell a year out we are living our lives and not checking BP very often! Hello, surgery friends from May of 2021. I hope this finds you all busy and well. To @CJEE, I'd like to hear if your bloating, etc. has resolved. It can be from so many different things and presumably you've worked through it?? I'm feeling terrific. I was dx'd with breast cancer in May (early stage) and just starting radiation, and I am convinced it was caught so early because I'm down 100 lbs. Throughout surgery and radiation prep, I have continued to maintain my weight and I love that my body feels healthy, even through cancer treatment. I feel blessed that I had WLS and am committed to continuing the journey. Would love to hear from any/each of you too.
  25. How I got to this number is a little silly actually. I weighed 125 when I was 25 years old, in my mind it was the last time I was happy with my body and weight. I am completely aware I am 51 years old now and its silly to compare BUT that mind is an evil thing sometimes. I am very competitive and I am not a gracious loser and I feel like this is a battle against my will. Anyway, I am just going to keep doing what I am comfortable doing and what I know is sustainable and deal with my demons in my brain! Thank you everyone,
