    NSV-Non Scale Victory
  2. I went to Knotts berry Farm on Friday. I had not been for 2 years because I was a millimeter from not being able to fit into the rides. This time there was room to spare! I couldn't even get the bar over my stomach in the bumper cars and there was plenty of room to spare. I ran everywhere and only had enough when the temp reached 105 and I had gone on Xcelerator twice. I went into Goodwill and found size medium tops and size 10 jeans and shorts. They now almost fit. The pants I mean. I am wearing medium tops. I went into target and got this cute little dress off the rack and it fit beautifully. It was the first time I have worn a dress in AGES. We went grocery shopping after church and the girl at the deli counter looks at me and says, "Have you lost weight? You look incredible!" That made my day and I told her so. I didn't even think she remembered me from week to week.

    Not Losing Weight?

It definitely could be a stall already. Or, it could be that you're not eating enough calories! It's great that you're getting the Water in though. I find that a challenge! Try eating just a little bit more (if you can do it) and see if that helps. If not, just be patient (yes, I know...that sux). The numbers will continue to drop soon. You've already lost 24 lbs. That is freaking amazing! When was the last time you lost 24 lbs in less than one month? Never, I'll bet! Also, did you take body measurements when you started? If so, then hide the damn scale (so hard....I know!). It's only frustrating you right now. Instead, do body measurements 1/week and you will probably see changes there, even if the scale is not moving. Focus on NSVs (non-scale victories). For me, for example. I have hardly needed my Asthma meds since I started the liquid diet pre-op. Before that, I was on 3 different puffers and an oral med. This is a life-changing NSV for me and I've only lost 22 lbs (with another 160+ to go!). There are TONS of great things happening for you right now.........even if the scale doesn't reflect that. Keep the faith and keep up the good work!

    I'm going on a DIET

Yikes. I couldn't disagree more. I think you underestimate it's unfilled potential. Left on my own, I'm a pitiful weight loser. This is one of the things I have learned being banded. I still need some some kind of plan and structure. Loose structure, but rules, nonetheless. My band is what makes it possible to keep at it through the "falls off the wagon", through stress-eating, through eating for the hell of it, whatever. My band helps me to maintain some semblance of consistency with eating less food all around. Just less. It's a Diet mind that keeps me on track with good food choices. Some shun the Diet mentality, but it works for me when I think around my screwed-up brain. I have to shift gears all the time, but shift them I will, as long as I see pounds falling off, inches falling off, NSV's galore. So, I happen to be fully supportive of whatever Diet keeps you meeting your goals until that fine day when you can/are willing to get a port. Step 1 would be a food journal. Start by simply writing it all down. (yeah, I know) then you can look and see just what your problem areas are. (yeah, I know, you already know). I can't suggest from here. Each time I think of something, I know you have all the reasons already lined up as to why it would be a)a waste of time b)a waste of money c)it won't work. Because I have a bit of you in me...stuff like that makes me mad and I get mad and blow it. Screw it. I'm eating Cheetoes, damnit. So, since this Diet thing you are searching for is just a phase anyway, why waste your time and energy and money? Just eat better, eat less, exercise more. Even with an unfilled band, it IS possible. In the end, it's what we all do anyway. Do yourself a favor and skip to the last step and use your band, however useless you think it is. I really do adore you, ya know
  6. Okay, here's what I'd advise to anyone just starting this journey: 1. Take your measurements pre-op. Keep track of them as you lose weight. When you stall/plateau, and we all do it, take your measurements again. Stalls are when I seem to lose sizes and notice the inches going away. 2. Stick to your post-op diet religiously. Your doctor has prescribed this diet because s/he feels that it's the safest diet to avoid complications with your new sleeve. 3. Start walking as soon as possible after surgery. Always try to do a little more than you did yesterday. 4. The minute you're released to lift weights, start lifting weights. I do a lot of low weight, high repetition work and I started out doing 10 reps of the simplest arm exercises I could find. Biceps curls, triceps extensions, skull crusher. 5. Be patient. You didn't gain all this weight in a hurry, so you won't lose it in a hurry. It will still seem incredibly fast when you get to goal. 6. Visit a therapist to help you learn how to deal with the life changes from VSG. We wouldn't be here if we didn't have food issues. 7. Drink your 64 oz of Water daily. Get in your Protein daily. Repeat and repeat. 8. Join My Fitness Pal or one of the other food logger sites. It's tremendously motivating. 9. Look for the Non scale Victories (NSV) every single day. It will help you stay positive about your journey and will give you motivation when yours is flagging. 10. Stolen straight from FavoredOne... ENJOY THE JOURNEY. This isn't a race. You don't get extra points for not eating properly or for being the fastest/slowest/most average loser. Does that help any?

    OMG! An NSV!

I am nearly 2 months post-op and nearly 40 pounds down. Today as I was walking toward a reflective glass door I noticed the most amazing thing! There were these two dark, shadowy areas on either side just below my neck! I had to squint to see what they were. I have hollows above my collar bones! I don't know if they just appeared today or if this sweater is just highlighting them, but either way, I don't remember the last time I had hollows anywhere let alone at my collar bones! Just had to share! pam

Star, That's a great NSV!! As a matter of fact, losing clothes sizes may be my favorite NSV.. .no, second favorite, but this is a family forum.
  10. I can now wrap the little gym towel all around my waist. It was not a pretty sight until recently. Slowly but surely.... getting there. Next fill Thursday. already have 6 cc in a 10 cc band. - J
  11. While I have been getting the normal bariatric/nutritional blood work done by my bariatric surgeon, I have not had my "standard" blood work since my last physical about 1 year ago, which was right about the time I changed my diet as part of my pre-op/post-op weight loss. I just got the results back last night and it's fantastic! While I did not technically have high cholesterol, I was borderline and my good/bad cholesterol was out of whack. Here is the change from year to year: Total Cholesterol (desirable is <200): 2/22/16 - 211 1/4/17 - 154 Triglycerides (normal less than 150; borderline 150-250): 2/22/16 -124 1/4/17 - 77 HDL (good cholesterol, desirable >40): 2/22/16 -31 1/4/17 - 49 LDL (desirable <130 or even 100): 2/22/16 -155 1/4/17 - 90 Blood Sugar (normal fasting sugar is <100-110, Diabetes is >125): 2/22/16 - 87 1/4/17 - 78 As you can see, I have had massive changes in the right direction across the board. Even those that were in the acceptable range have gotten even better! It's amazing what a year of eating right will do for your body! Curious if everyone else is seeing these types of results. It's very validating for all the hard work!

    “Non scale victories...”

Great comment above. Doctors sometimes reduce certain health conditions to weight when it is more complex than that - for example, my very fit, thin cousin has uncontrollable high blood pressure, while mine is well controlled with meds. Just looking at our weights, you would assume the opposite is true. Regarding NSVs, big ones for me have been cutting my HBP meds (again, I have well controlled HBP, so I have had to reduce meds), more energy, a better sex drive (a bit embarrassing to share on a forum but it is true so...), less anxiety about fitting in places, fitting into old clothes in my closet, feeling eager to move more (when in the past activity was harder and I wanted to avoid it.)

    Finally out of the 30s

Congrats SB and Diane on your respective major NSVs! Woohoo! Diane, wow! I can't imagine what you went through having the issues you're having, especially being in a foreign country! I can't really be of much help because I haven't had such issues. I only had one episode where I couldn't get anything down except Water after swelling up from getting stuck. If everything gets better and you stay in Barcelona, maybe you want to look into getting your tubing shortened and "de-kinked" when you get back to the U.S.? You should be able to get your fills out of the band, specifically for cases like this when it's an emergency. I hope now that it's been a few days since this that everything is okay! Sending you well wishes!

What a NSV! Congratulations and keep up the fantastic work!
  15. I thought I'd start a thread to share the special times of our journey. I invite everyone to participate. I think it helps to "feed" on others success. You might help make a difference in someone else's life. I've received a lot of my motivation from guys like ousooner and Jack. I'll start it off by saying that today is my 6 month mark of being banded and I haven't regretted one minute of it. After a fast start, my weight loss has slowed down, but I'm very happy to be 2/3 of the way to my goal. I go in for a fill on Thursday. I have always had a nice weight loss following fills, so maybe I'll be under 200 in the next couple weeks. I tend to lose in bunches and I am due. I'd like to be at my goal (170# or a 25 BMI) by year's end. I've been able to up my exercise lately because my RA has been much better, so that helps. Anyway, enough of my rambling; let's hear from others who are at a special point or passing a benchmark. Stand strong brothers! Bruce

    Milestones, Anniversaries, SVs and NSVs

I'll post a couple. I am 6 months out from starting my band process, pre-op diet Jan 24, surgery Feb. 14. I passed the 100lbs lost mark in the last few weeks and have never felt better. I have gone from over 60% body fat to 30%, so not only am I losing weight I am gaining lean mass. I was planning on keeping my band private, but that seems to be out the door having lost so much weight in so little time. My job requires me to appear on the news from time to time. After an appearance the other night I had people who dont see me that often phone me up to ask me what the hell is going on. My Mom also had to call me up the other night to tell me that all the ladies at her work think I am really "cute". Sorry ladies, I'm taken. Other NSV include not having any clothes in my closet since that all hang off me and having to get my wedding band resized because it kept falling off. There are more, but that is a pretty decent start. Andrew

OMG!!! I can HARDLY wait until I can shop at the Gap and Hot Topic!!! I'm getting close....the 14's at Avenue (my main store) are fitting right so soon I'll have to abandon them. I *did* buy a size 16 in a regular store and that was, to me a victory. So....YAY!! A thirteen in a store like PacSun is awesome!!!!! Cheers on your amazing NSV!!! And props to you for noticing it!!

    Tell me something good :)

Yeah Panda I started OSU with a 50+ BMI, nice weight for a nice thick Redwood tree but a mite heavy for an Obese Woman. And my half- off, I started at 365+ , just weighed myself this AM, after eons of wanting to chuck weight scales out the nearest window or in a Dumpster, actually did the latter once, one of those sarcastic electronic voices " Do You Realize Your Weight Today is...? Yep, smart-Aleck scale, marched out to the Dumpster and threw it as hard as I could to the rear- that way it would LIE NO MORE! Well my current one, weighs you , then sends an elecronic gentle zap up through your bare feet, never felt a thing, then It calcuates BMI, % fat, % water, and how many calories to maintain, that one I don't pay attention to because I am still in Losing Mode. But it is digital instead of a dial whirring and speaking out loud. And I weigh this morning 181,7 pounds of Happy Happy Camper so over 180 less! And I am going to do my durnest to make it down to 175, loss is slowing BUT not stopped yet! Go over to the NSV thread current and see what else I am boasting about.😜And a Peaceful Sunday to All!

Ah Kim, not Belgian, British, but closest affordable surgery was belgium, so combined my sleeve with a weekend away! Well, I have been far from perfect, but I have been a lot better this week, and -2lb, which is the first significant shift in a very long time. So thats good. I also had a great NSV this week, a friend (who I consider to be a skinny friend), asked me to take a bag of clothes to the charity shop for her, and I thought prior to donating them I'd have a quick peek and see fi anything was vaguely my size. Well it ALL fit despite being an odd range of sizes UK 10s-14s (US 6,8, and 10s), so I just adopted a new work wardrobe, and now I owe a big donation to charity! Anyway I have 7 days until I go on holiday, and so I seriously doubt I'll get the extra 10lb needed for my labour day goal, but I am happy, I am now tecnically just 9lb overweight, and 19lb to my long term goal! Its a good place to be :D :D

    Claustrophobic &VGS

I used to be very claustrophobic. As my body got smaller, the space around me got larger and most of my claustrophobia has gone away. Weird NSV for sure.

    NSV for me

I got my pressure checked yesterday and it was fine. I have saying for months that I was going to get it checked. I will not wait and put it off like that again. I am not making the best food choices right now but I am conscious of what I am eating. I did not workout yesterday so I built up a sweat sorting throught clothes. I was able to actually thrown some clothes out, box some up for someone else and hang up so old thing that now fit again. I have on a top today that was once too tight but today it is baggy. I had my ex boyfriend button down shirt in the closet so I tried it on and guess what....it buttoned up and was tight at the bottom button. Woohooooo who would have thought....I'm happy.....this feels good. I am going to do this, I know I am. I'm not going to waste anymore time of my life being overweight and unhappy.

What a wonderful NSV! Be proud! You ARE doing it!
  25. mnbsleeve

I'm counting this as a NSV! Maybe..

LOL! Definitely an NSV. I had a similar experience with my pants coming down in spin class! It freaks me out how this happens but you are so right! When we assume a stall or small loss means it's not working we are so wrong!!! I think it's the opposite: this is working so well, we are changing so quickly, we cannot absorb the changes and we are shocked when our clothes fall off of us LOL!!! Congratulations!!!! Happy shriking! :-)
