    Breakup Because I Had WLS

I have not personally experienced this, but I have heard divorce rates are high for people who have WLS. However, it sounds like you dodged a bullet! We don't need an abundance of food and alcohol to have fun!

    One glass of wine....

I mean, I'm gonna give you my take on this, and it's just my own personal philosophy. I follow my plan pretty much 99% of the time, but pretty much nothing is off limits. I make sure I get all my requirements, but then if I want a dessert or whatever, I do have it on occasion. Now I am 9 months out and am allowed alcohol at this point but have not had it, but I also have NASH so I'm afraid to. I think if you never allow yourself to have anything it just sets you up to binge on it later but that's just my own personal opinion and what works for me. I do much better by allowing myself to have something. That does not work for everything. I do not have sparkling water, which is forbidden from my plan, even though it is my favorite thing, but that's a whole other story. After a year, it will be allowed though. Other than that, nothing is completely off limits. Sent from my Nokia 7.2 using BariatricPal mobile app
  3. I am down 45-46lbs. We were at the pool yesterday ( shirt still on) and people are saying wow you look good! I really wasn't expecting that yet but I guess it has started. Questions like what are you doing?...Answer---Not eating much and not drinking alcohol which is true. I have the right tool to get this done!
  4. I am about 31/2 months post VSG surgery and have had a number of weeks in a stall.  I am ok with it, I know it's normal.  BUT...I've found the joy of alcohol again....dammit!  I stopped for 12 months in 2020, gained weight, had surgery in January this year, lost a shed load of weight...and stalling. I do think my alcohol consumption is contributing (doh, of course it is, it's empty calories) so I'm on a mission to knock it back for a while.

    It's never easy huh!  🙂

I'm with you on this! Im around 3 month too. Had 2 days of drinking on vacation 2 weeks ago but since then, I've had at least 4 more "occasions" to drink. I know its not the worst but alcohol was definitely a contributing factor to my weight gain and its too early for us to get off track. Let's go cold turkey together!

Congrats on your wedding anniversary @mischa23. Have to admit I did look forward to that first gin & tonic after surgery at my cousin’s 40th but it took me hours to drink it. I had to stir it a bit to release some of the bubbles in the tonic first but honestly it didn’t quite taste the same (damn weird post surgery taste buds) & I wasn’t really enjoying it. I still find that with wine & champagne. Even dry not sweet wines taste too sweet & I don’t enjoy drinking them as much when I do have the odd glass. Even now, I only have one glass of alcohol about once or twice a month & I take ages to drink it. Gin is probably the drink I enjoy most (I was always an gin drinker so yay) & I find I rarely finish a glass of champagne. You may be totally different but don’t be surprised if that first glass is not quite as enjoyable. Hope your anniversary is a special day for you both.

    alcohol

Most vets advise that you start slowly with alcohol at first, because it may affect you differently than before surgery. So it might be a good idea to try a glass of wine at home, where it doesn't matter if it ends up hitting you really hard. Then you'll have some idea of how much you can drink while you're out and be okay. Also, be careful that alcohol doesn't become a substitute coping mechanism to replace the food you can't eat anymore. It might sound alarmist but transfer addictions have happened to people (I had to check myself because I found myself shopping to get the emotional soothing I used to get from food). Other than that, factor those calories into your into plan and enjoy!

    One glass of wine....

So I’ve watched so many you tube videos and that was a question. The doctor mentioned that the tolerance is very low so maybe a sip or 2 will do LOL my craving is not alcohol but sodas which I hardly drank before surgery 🤷🏻‍♀️

    Living Rent Free

At any given moment in time people are going through their own stuff right? You have your issues, problems and bias and so does every other person on the planet. How you choose to respond is the only thing you can control. I've heard the saying "don't let people live rent free in your head" from OA (Overeater's Anonymous) meetings I've been to and by a friend I have who attends AA meetings and is a recovering alcoholic. That saying implies that you should "do" something if you have something that is playing on your mind. The thing you decide to do can be anything from writing about your feelings on the matter, working on letting it go, or talking to the person about the situation. Perhaps what you did here ...telling us the situation is all you need to do. You got it out of your head and onto paper (so to speak). Sometimes the "action" we should take is only with ourselves. If you feel this will cause conflict that you don't want to deal with at this time, for whatever reason, it is ok to no act or react to it.
  10. Thank you for sharing, I really do appreciate it. I am frankly in no way concerned about becoming an alcoholic but yes I did read several things about transfer addictions. I honestly was just wondering how long everyone waited because the surgeons recommendations are clearly very different on many issues and what if any adverse reactions anyone may have had. With Travel and Live shows opening up again I have a venue coming in in Mid June and will be dining with a few important customers. I am in all honestly just checking in with others in hopes of hearing about their experiences at which point I will make a decision if June is much too early for me to have a glass of wine at a customer dinner.
  11. Since you already received the requisite comments about drinking above, I will just answer your specific question. I was sleeved, and was told no alcohol for the first month. Beyond that, was told to determine on my own what I can handle, but the general recommendation was to try to abstain. With that said, here is MY timeline: 3 weeks post op: 2-3 sips of red wine (felt weird, thought I could feel the warmth going down my intestines). Also I remember being affected by it. Not drunk or even tipsy...but something. 2-ish months post op: ~1 fl oz of soju-sake (got terribly sick within 15 or so minutes, spent the next few hours suffering : rapid heart rate/barf/diarrhea/lethargy/passed out...it was the sugar, dammit). 3-7 months post op: probably had 4-5 (partial) drinks of either red wine or vodka soda the entire time (got tipsy really fast, got sober equally fast). 8 months to present : drank more (mostly due to the fact that I was done with weight loss phase). Maybe 1-2 times a week at first (and sometimes none at all), then Covid came around, and since about may-june last year, I drink almost every day. I still get tipsy and sober pretty quickly....not as drastic as in the early months, but still. Generally, I can feel the effects by 1/2 the glass, and if I finish the whole thing, I will be completely normal again within 1-1.5 hours. So take this as validation, justification, or as a cautionary tale. You decide. P.S. note that the effects will be different for everyone...I am pretty small (5'2", 110 lbs), so this definitely influences how I am affected. @The Greater Fool's suggestion to try it out in a safe place first is a good one.
  12. transfer addiction is real possibility (some people develop alcoholism after surgery - we're at much greater risk of that than "normies"), so tread carefully. Some surgeons recommend you wait up to a year before drinking any alcohol (although others are more lenient), but most if not all would recommend you only indulge occasionally, and then only a drink or two. Alcohol hits you much faster after surgery. I didn't have any alcohol for the first three years - alcoholism runs in my family, so i was always very careful about drinking, even before I had surgery. I now drink maybe four times a year, and it's usually just a glass or two of wine.

    Drinking Wine Socially following Surgery

My surgeon advised not to even attempt alcohol until after 14 weeks I believe? It was in the same category as red meat. After posting here I realized my surgeon allowed foods post op that other surgeon's do not. For example, Cream of Wheat the same week as mashed potatoes. So I can't say if that's normal or not. I can absolutely guarantee you that 3 months out, you may take a few drinks and still lose weight. However, give it another month or 2 and it will slow or stall weight loss.

    Dumping advice please

Yes I did have something similar. I would have several bm during the day but the middle of the night and early morning was the worst! For me it was my vitamins. They had a lot of sugar alcohol in them. I switch everything over a capsule and the problem has been solved.

ADVICE FROM A 10 YEAR VETERAN

I was 234 at heaviest 118 at lightest and am now (4 and a quarter years post op) 149. Yes - lockdown but more than that it’s sugar addiction. At 114 I had no bum or tits or shape and people said I looked gaunt and old but I LOVED being skinny. I’m now a size 8-10 uk - up from a low 6 and definitely not fat or even really overweight. My bmi is maybe a tad over but I’ve always been solid - short legs long back- great build for a hod carrier an ex once told me!!! so I need to deal but it’s sugar I need to deal with. I go in and off IF and Keto but constantly relapse with sugar. I’m weaning off just now and am going to aim for IF on work days (my tummy is v hair trigger so that helps avoid leaving a classroom mid lesson. the struggle is real. I’m a recovering alcoholic and sugar hits the same button. I’m depressed, sedentary, lonely but I’m not giving up. It’s great to hear from people who’ve kept weight off and I’d like too to hear how you get it off again befor it’s all back... on a positive note I have boobs and a bum again!

    Postoperative issues with WLS

Transfer addictions are a consideration. Some minor ones are just very expensive hobbies you always wanted to do (the serious ones can be alcohol etc) You may become fixated on new clothes, specialty equipment or even eyelash extensions 🤫
  17. Hi all! So I just came back from vacation where I ate solids, drank alcohol and had edibles! Good times! But don't worry, I am back to my dull healthy life I did read some post about drinking after the sleeve and was super cautious about it. However, for me, I was able to handle my alcohol just fine. For reference, Im a whiskey girl and I drank it straight to avoid soda and sugar. I also had some vodka spiked mimosa's. Now, I'm not much of a smoker and prefer alcohol to marijuana but every once in a while I'll have an edible. This time, I had half a gummy worm and experienced a full high! After laughing uncontrollably for 2 hours I knocked out for 4 hours! Then I woke up an ate a full meal! No restrictions! The following day I had a small bite of the remaining half of the gummy and felt the SAME high as the night before. I ate 6 chicken wings and a chicken tender! Thats a whole lot of food for me right now. Personally, edibles are not my favorite distraction but this was definitely a different experience post surgery. I am SOO happy I didn't eat the whole gummy. BE WARNED!
  18. Beyond the 1 month mark, I was not given a list of "forbidden" foods. I was however given a list things to avoid "in excess": alcohol, coffee, high-fat, soda, sugar...all the regular stuff. Aside: I partake in all of that...well except the soda, but I do drink lots of carbonated water, so its almost the same. My surgeon was more a laid-back kind of guy in terms of food and lifestyle choices, like, 'do what you want but understand and accept any possible consequences' type of thing. But my nutritionist was more like a scoldly-mom-type, oscillating between her disappointment in some of my choices and a mom-pride in my progress.

    Bad Advice and being honest.

Hi. My name is ms.sss and I am a human being. I drink alcohol, coffee and carbonated water almost daily. I eat deep fried foods, fatty foods, and desserts on the regular. I eat popcorn (smothered in butter and lots of salt). There were 4-5 straight days just after Christmas where my diet for the entire day(s) consisted of solely alcohol and pecan butter tarts, no joke! I smoke cigarettes and drive well above the speed limit. I smoked pot almost every weekend last summer. I have not filed my personal income taxes for the past 2 years. If I'm home, I eat lunch on the couch with laptop, and binge watch TV for hours on end. I haven't taken my vitamins/supplements in over year. I didn't brush my teeth before I went to bed last night. Sometimes (sometimes!) I worry that people will read what I post and get the wrong idea/message...like I'm eating too little, or too much, or just unhealthily. Or that I'm wholly irresponsible or going down the path the h*ll. Or, that someone with a different temperament than mine will do as I do and get unexpected results. But we are all adults here and we each can make decisions on our own lives without putting any onus on some stranger on the internet. In the end, I don't assume any responsibility for your actions, nor your reactions to mine. I will commiserate with you, make suggestions, share a joke, and offer up my own personal experiences. But what you do with your lives is on you*. * Clarification: You == the collective "You", NOT the OP nor anyone else on this thread specifically.
  20. So very true! I don't know why people are so worried when people are doing things to better their health! Even before WLS... I found things that "worked" better than others. For example, I struggled with major/severe exhaustion because of my then undiagnosed sleep apnea/ insomnia - so I was so tired I went to bed at 8 pm most nights (also was a very early riser). During that time, I found that I couldn't lose weight if I ate after 4 pm. OMG... the HORROR... I wasn't eating for the last 4 hours of my evening?!!! Yet several of my friends stayed up until 10/11 and didn't eat past 6/7pm. So, what is the difference?! I mean, I ate plenty throughout the day... just not at the END of the day. And drinking calories. If I had one bad nutrition habit, that was it. So I would do my best to avoid calorie filled drinks during any weight loss plan I had. And more importantly... I found I could NEVER lose weight and often gained if I drank any alcohol. Even just half a glass of wine. So I would go to a party and do my best not to drink alcohol. My friends were losing it because I didn't want to get drunk with them. They couldn't handle if I didn't drink anything or just had half a glass of wine. I actually had to ditch some friends that I used to love hanging out with because they couldn't handle that I wasn't willing to give in and drink with them every single time we got together. And exercise? Well... I hate most exercise lol. But I love my long walks. People think I am crazy because my go to walk is 6 miles and takes 1 hour and 45 minutes and they just don't get it. But I enjoy it. It is hardly a workout for me, but I feel great afterwards. But somehow it is wrong for me to take my long walks. People are crazy the way they react to others.
  21. Has anyone who healed from gastric bypass , tried to snort cocaine ? Did it cause stomach ulcers? I know it's rough on the digestive system. Did it give you the same rush of dopamine, no appetite, and extra energy as before surgery ? " I am not saying i do or did cocaine" I am just asking questions, to learn, how our body changes after surgery. The coca leaf, is a plant grown in the ground, just like marijuana, people chew on it, in south America for extra energy. The surgeons allow you to use prescribed, amphetamine salts that are crushed not xr. aka adderall . so what's the difference.? I am not talking about people with heart issues, or high blood pressure . Not mixing cocaine with alcohol either , that makes the toxic drug, cocaethylene. I understand cocaine is addictive, and illegal so spare me the addiction transfer speeches. I guess my question is has anyone survived life, after gastric bypass surgery, without dying after a few lines of Blow ? Without stomach ulcers etc? Has anyone tried it and got no dopamine reward ? because of the surgery ? I read a few articles explain something about stomach bile?
  22. It very much depends upon your surgeon. They all say different things. My surgery involves a sleeved stomach (just with added intestinal changes) and my surgeon doesn't allow rice (doesn't want us to ever eat it again because it swells and can potentially cause your stomach to stretch), they also don't want us to eat pasta (though I was told veggie pasta like chickpea or lentil pasta is fine in moderation), bread is off limits for six months, starches are off limits for six months (potatoes, beans, etc), they don't want us to drink alcohol ever again (but if you do they want you to wait a minimum of 1 year)... and that's all can remember off the top of my head other than no processed meats or other foods (which is a given).
  23. You make a great point about transfer addiction. I'm preparing for surgery and there is a lit out there about WLS patients drinking alcohol after surgery. Luckily I never drank alcohol so that's not a concern for me, but i wonder what might be something I need to watch out for since eating will be less.
  24. Gotta replace the comfort habit....with a new comfort habit....while avoiding crossover addiction. Very easy to get in trouble with spending, intimacy addiction, gambling, alcohol, drugs, (obsessive dieting, obsessive exercize, obsessive internet use) Jaelzion has an awesome comfort habit...coffee, and a little alone time to think/relax/refocus. I like baths, walks, light funny TV, calling my bestie, playing with my pooch, gardening. I also love a cup of coffee and a sit on the porch. OP...it's a terrific question and the root of regain. It's a huge part of the work. Thanks for bringing it up.

    Stopped losing weight.

Well done on your weight loss so far. Going to need a lot more information than you've given so as to receive relevant responses. It would help if you completed your profile: height, weight etc. Also how long as your weight stopped? What are you eating (including fluids with calories) and what volumes. How much fluid intake? Alcohol? Exercise? Incidental activity?
