    My shopping list for surgery

Oh, I do have peppermint tea, for me it has always worked well for tummy issues. As for gas - I'm always pretty much on my own there. For entertainment - I'll have schoolwork, which equates to about 15 hours of reading each week. Ok, so it's not really entertainment, but it's a way to pass the time. I've already started Tivo'ing shows... and I did pick up a few leisure books, too. Plus I will have company. The squishy pillow is a good reminder. I have a few of those squishy ones that are full of tiny beads... I have some just for the head, and I have two that are body length... I also bought one of those ugly "sit up" pillows... I don't really know what you call them, but they prop you up in bed and have arms. Thanks for the tips & reminders.

At the 4 week mark and not losing any..

Every program is different. How much did your program recommend you eat? At 4 weeks you would still be on the pureed stage. 600-800 calories a day, 64 oz of Water and 60gms of Protein. Mine recommends 3 meals and 2 Snacks a day. Are you keeping track of what you are eating/drinking?
  3. Yes. EVERYONE stalls. Use the search function....your question has already been answered a hundred times. Or go post this in the "Don't Sweat the Stall Stuff" subforum. It was created just for these threads.
  4. If you discover that grits do work for you [not everyone loves them], I have a way that would allow you to get Protein (eggs) into the meal in a much less noticeable way. My band prefers liquids in the morning and I find Protein drinks don't really fill the bill. I make the grits fairly thin, add cheese scrambled eggs, season and then throw the whole deal into my Magic Bullet or blender. Voila! Tasty, savory, yummy! Next week, I'll be getting some unflavored Protein powder that I ordered. Maybe I'll add a scoop to the mix before blending to increase the protein levels. Let us know how grits work for you, Jo Ann

    London calling

Hello Natalie! Has your surgeon given you directions on what you should be eating pre banding? If he/she says no fat, than no fat it is. If not, follow what you are being told. As hard as the next few weeks will be, believe me when I tell you that it will fade into distant memory as you move through the phases of being banded. Welcome to the boards. Nice to meet you.

    Did I mess up?

I am seriously considering the lapband surgery because of my struggles with my weight my entire life. I am trying to get my ducks in a row now so that when I decide to move forward with the surgery and pursue it, I know what will be expected. I have been reading on the BCBS of AL website about the bariatric surgery requirements. One says that you have to be at their required BMI for a 3 year period. Well...I have been overweight since I was married in 2001 and even throughout my teenage years (except when I went on WW at 15 yrs old only to gain it all back and more) but in Sept. 07 I began a strict diet of 1300 calories and exercise that just about killed me but I lost 20lbs and got to the 200lb mark. After that I stalled and couldn't lose a thing so I began a doctor supervised weight loss program that included the low cal/low carb/low fat diet and adipex (phentermine) and lost another 25 lbs putting me at 175lbs in Sept. 08. In November 08, I wound up in the ER due to atrial fibrillation and it was suspected that the adipex was the issue. So, I stopped it and of course the weight began to creep back up to around 190lb when in August 09 I found out I was pregnant. Unfortunately, the baby passed away and I miscarried at 15 weeks. At that time I was up to 210lbs. Now, I am at 215 and cannot seem to get my weight to budge. I am tired of the yo-yo dieting and really want to change the whole situation. I am afraid that having done all the dieting a few years ago may mess up my chances of moving forward in the next 6-12 months w/ bariatric surgery b/c of the "three years of obesity" required by my insurance company. None of the diets that I lost the weight on was covered by my insurance and I paid out of pocket for this the entire time. Does this period in my life have to be reported to the insurance company? How do they "document" that I have been obese for 3 years? I rarely go to the doctor other than my OBGYN for my yearly check b/c I am never sick. What records will they pull??? I am hoping (probably to no avail) that maybe these months of being a lower weight might not have to be included in documentation. I should also tell you that I have documented severe sleep apnea if that helps! Any advice??? Thanks in advance! Leigh:smile:

    6 weeks

Tell me your 6/7 week stats and what you're eating/ate! Would love to know. I'm in a stall right now. I've been in a stall for a while. I'm doing okay though! SW: 264.4 CW: 231 I'm tolerating everything fine. Can really feel restriction now to an extent. I wasn't the first 4 weeks which scared me. I'm tolerating all foods and trying all allowed foods. Which is everything right now. Minus the obvious. Today I went to taco Mac. Got three roasted wings down. Was stuffed as a goose. Crazy I used to eat 10! Tell me about where you were/are at 6/7 weeks post op Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  8. I have been waiting a long time. So many doctors so many tests. Then when that's over you have to wait for ins to be approved. That's another two weeks. But it was great because I found out in a week and August 5th is my day at 10 am tomorrow. I am so excited, over night stay and home on Wed. Then my first week of what I do not know. If anyone has advice on how the first week is I would love to hear Thank you Lisa :cool2:
  9. Like Kathy said, just after surgery I felt that way, but for crying out loud, I'd just had major surgery! I maintain my calories between 1000 and 1200 a day, generally speaking. I just had my 4th fill, so I've been getting less than this for the last week, but I'm giving myself a break from counting calories for a while. (I'm making myself crazy) I only occasionally feel really lethargic, but I attibute this to my fibromyalgia rather than nutrition.
  10. Same with me. Only thing was about a week before I got my first fill, I would get really really hungry. Right now I'm only 5 days out from being filled, but I haven't been hungry. I noticed that I simply can't eat Breakfast because I'm too tight, so I just drink a Protein drink. Then a good lunch, and a small dinner. Granted, I am still on soft foods for another day, but I do eat.
  11. Since I had my dad bring me home in my car (I have an SUV and his car is real low to the ground) my car was at his house for over a week. I was totally fine not having it. I did have him take me to the store once in the time, though. After reading through this again, I see you need public transit. While I didn't or don't have that option where I live, I can't imagine I would have had an issue riding a bus or train. I would suggest having or getting or asking the surgeon for an abdominal binder. It's helpful regardless, but would be super helpful to have on a bouncy public transit ride. I used to live in Chicago, and If still did, I feel I wouldn't have had any problems riding the cta.

    OK! What do you think?

Take your messurements ... guarentee your scale isnt telling the truth like the poster above said - you are experiencing a stall. Your body is in starvation mode and holding onto everything its got. This can often lead to a gain. You'll start losing again soon.

    A New Love!

I am in love with grits, but never was before WLS! I have discovered that adding unflavored protein powder to instant packets of grits is a great breakfast (and don't laugh, dinner also!) idea. I am experimenting by adding different types of cheeses, and adding different spices, as well. One single-serve packet lasts me for at least three meals! The brand I amusing is Quaker Original Instants Grits. I am, indeed, so EASILY amused.....

    Going back to work...

Had surgery on 9/12 and tried to go back to work on 9/16....too soon. I teach at a college and have been doing half days this week. Feeling better every day. Mostly sore around the port site.
  15. I just went for a consult last week and now I am scheduling a surgery for May sometime. I have been thinking about thue surgery for a year. But now that I have started the process I feel rushed. Time is a little tight since this year my husband and I have a lot going on. Also, I have 2 people close to me that went through it and they have not been that positive about their experiences. I am really worried about the port flipping and the food getting 'hung' up. I go to dinner with one of the people who I know had it done and they throw up a lot. Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks!!!
  16. Help! I seem to be stalleed with my weight loss. Along with increasing my cardio I think some new easy fix meal ideas would help. So...for those fellow bandsters who've consistenly lost weight...what are you eating on a daily basis?

    Stomach Pain

Well, this is what I know and would do. I work with a girl who is 3 years from her original banding, she did lose 90% of her weight but she lost it not the healthiest way. She was constantly allowing her band to be to tight and she would vomit and spit up frequently. 3 weeks ago she started having abdominal pain and it had come to the point she could hardly tolerate any solid foods and only small amounts of liquids. She had a fluro exam and it reveled that her band had slipped and her stomach pouch had pulled through the band and was ganging over the band. When she would eat, the food would go into the pouch that was hanging over the band and the pain would come from the stomach trying to push the food back up through the band. I understand this exam is expensive but if your band has slipped there are more serious consequences. Maybe the hospital will allow you to make payments on the procedure. I am not going to lecture you on what you eat or why this has happened because it sounds to me like you are beating yourself up enough. I hope you can get the help you need and can get your head in the right place so you can lose the weight you desire to lose. Good luck.

  19. So....I have a dilemma, I have a date set to have my sleeve done October 12th. Tonight I went out to dinner with my boyfriend and ended up in the ER with a gallbladder attack. They are currently working on admitting me and I will speak with the surgical PA in the morning. Has anyone ever had their gallbladder removed a couple weeks before their WLS?? My surgeon was going to take a look at it and if he was able to get at it the plan was to take it out then. It took me soooo long to get insurance approval and I am so excited to finally work towards a healthier me and now I'm stuck with a "hot" gallbladder as the doctor called it (he had quite the sense of humor...or maybe it's the pain killers lol) Just looking to see if anyone had a similar situation and how it worked out. Thanks

    Beginning in Montana

Welcome Twilight! I felt exactly as you have described before surgery - I think a lot of the people on this board have. But I knew I needed the band to use as a tool to not gain the weight back. I've been successful losing the weight in the past - but never successful at keeping it off. This was a big decision for me, but as my health continued to worsen, and my weight was still rising - I KNEW I had to do something different. I was banded on Nov 1st and have worked my way through 2 weeks of liquids and am now enjoying mushies. Reading through the threads on this board (old and new) helps me immensely - during research, pre-op and now post-op. There are some bandsters here that I "clicked" with (even though they don't know it! ) and I look for their postings and get lots of help and encouragement from them. What you are feeling is natural for anyone going to have surgery - but try to think about working with the band and being successful, and improving your health and quality of life. Best of luck to you!!

    One Week Post Surgery

Wow! Congrats! I was shocked by 14 pounds in two weeks but your achievement is excellent

    2 1/2 weeks post op....Exercise!

I started jogging at 3 weeks, which was the soonest I could run without feeling like my stitches were pulling. Within six weeks I was back in the gym doing boxing classes. If you're bored with walking and cleared to run, go for that- nothing burns fat faster in my experience. Other options include walking up stairs, doing light lifting, or picking up the pace on your walking. I think two weeks is a little early to get too crazy with the workouts, but only you can really judge what seems like a good idea and what doesn't.
