    Cough cough cough

Coughing is a sign of acid reflux.I had the sleeve surgery in 2011.Last year I started coughing and having terrible reflux.I had to have a revision to bypass on Nov.22,2016.It has really helped.I went back to my weight loss Dr and he did upper GI and endoscope.I was turned downed at first because insurance thought it was about weight loss. Then sent my other Drs records for acid reflux and my Dr did a Peer to Peer.I say this only to warn people who had the lapband or sleeve that this can happen.Be Aware.

TMF summed it pretty well. But unless the band is defective or causing health issues, I am not always convinced that revision surgery will cure bad eating habits. My wife has the sleeve, and she has to be very careful about how she eats, and what she eats. You can overeat with a sleeve as well, and that will stretch the stomach.

I see so many posts here like yours. No one can monitor what goes on in your mouth but it's my belief that many banders never learn how to eat very slow, chew food to a Soup like consistency and eat very small bites. Eating too fast is a curse we all struggle with. Revising to a different WLS is always a possibility with the band . Fortunately there are some new WLS techniques on the horizon. Here's one that is very promising: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9CCrfa7zCqs Of course, you can go back to your surgeon and nutritionist and start over again. You should already know how this is done? Eat healthy foods, don't eat processed foods, eat Protein first. This would be my recommendation. I know the band works if you follow the rules and eat healthy, non processed foods and your band is adjusted properly. You can revise to any surgery you want but if you don't eat healthy foods or follow the rules, no WLS will work. tmf

    revision from lap band

Terry, I'm sorry to read that you had complications and the band is no longer useful. I don't have an opinion on revision but I just wanted you to know that I always appreciated your posts and support for the bandster cohort here.

    Is it bad?

I prayed I wouldn't end up pregnant before my surgery. My husband was deploying and I made sure that we used 2 forms of birth control before he left just to ensure that I would not end up pregnant. I refused to get pregnant when I was fat, and I sure wasn't going to do when I was having issues with my band, and knowing that I was going to have to revise to VSG. It just wasn't worth it to me. Just to let you know, I've been cleared by my surgeon and PCP to TTC. We've been not preventing for the last 3 months. Nothing exciting to report yet, but my body is still adjusting, and I figure it's on God's time, not ours.

What my band should have done.

I'm having the same revision on July 8th. Sent from my SM-G920V using the BariatricPal App

What my band should have done.

Same here! I had my revision June 6th and I'm just so happy with my new life! I'm not hungry at all, I eat a tiny bit and I'm full, and I don't have to run to the bathroom with that aweful pain in the chest after having one bite of chicken! This is night and day! 8. Have you been totally unfilled or do u still have some Fluid? I was totally unfilled for about 2 mths previously to my revision (8 weeks out) and that relieved most of my band related food pain. While I still noticed that I had a band (couldn't eat copious amt of anything) I could eat more than before I had my unfill. I had many as "Last Supper" before my revision. Does everything give you pain? Or just tough foods? You may have to be on a soft food/liquids for the next 2 weeks (refried Beans, mashed potatoes, yogurt, soft fish, etc) until ur revision. If you're not unfilled totally, I'd do that 1st. Good luck to u. I was unbanded and sleeved at once, thank God. It took him an extra 30 mins to dig my band outa my stomach. Glad I was asleep and didn't have to watch!
  9. Can I ask why you are doing a revision from sleeve to bypass? I will be getting the bypass, but my sister just had the sleeve. How did the sleeve fail you?
  10. I had the same revision on Monday. Low grade fevers are normal early out. I been having them on and off. I would worry if I was really out of it durring the fever. Hope you feel better soon!
  11. I have not been in to this site for a very long time. My band did NOT cure my obesity ( I am still a size 20 -3 sizes smaller than at my highest weight pre-band) but it cured my life long depression. I had my first band in 2003, revision in 2004 after I moved it by overeating. The second one I did not fill until 2 years after my surgery (was trying to have a baby, then was pregnant). My band expands to suit my needs. I can eat as much as any NORMAL person with no problem. This has not allowed me to lose a lot of weight, but the feeling of being normal, for the first time in my life, has actually changed my life. I am happy for the first time in decades. 30 years I struggled with my hunger, constant, painful, desperate, unsatiable urge to swallow, didnt matter what...never enough. And thanks to my band I finally have limits. The fog lifted and I am enjoying my life tremendously. Is it an ilusion? am i not willing to do the work and lose more weight? is it wrong to be enjoying this "freedom" to enjoy food with limits. My husband asked me the other day why I was not "using" my band if its there. I tried to explain that I am happy like this! But is the whole point of the band to be thin? Isnt being happy, healthy and fit ( and LOVING the lifestyle in the process) enough? What do you think?

    Un-Banded 11/15 :(

I can't make this better for you, just know that you have every right in the world to be mad and feel like your body has betrayed you. While my story isn't nearly as traumatic as yours I am also a failed band. Mine prolapsed and I had to have emergency removal, once inside he found I had started to erode as well. I was supposed to revise to RNY but once he was in and saw how much damage I had he felt it unwise to do the revision at that time (I did get a revision 6 months later). For weeks I was an emotional wreck. I was mad at my body, felt totally betrayed by it. Talk it out, cry it out, scream it out....what you're feeling is completely normal.
  14. I wanted to update my post. I had revision surgery on August 19. My surgeon submitting papers to my insurance, Unicare, in July and they approved in just a couple days. My doctor stated band intolerance as the reason. He did seem a bit surprised though that they approved so quickly. Surgery as much harder than I expected. I am 8 days post-op now and starting to feel better. I was told that the band was encapsulated in the stomach and that they had to do a lot of heavy stitching in my upper stomach area. That is why I was having so much pain in that area post-op. I am sipping constantly and walking better. I still have to sleep on my back and don't see that changing anytime soon. I can't bend over yet and still need help around the house. I'm taking one day at a time, and looking forward to a full recovery. Let me know if you have any questions. Good luck to everyone on a band to sleeve journey.
  15. Hi Scole. Wondering if you have had your surgery as of yet? I am hoping to have the same revision and would love to hear from someone who has gone through it.
  16. The weight really does come back faster then it goes off. I just had revision surgery because of a leak in my port cord and when I lost restriction I gained back all the weight I had lost plus some. It's discouraging. Don't give up though. It's a daily struggle but we all can do it.

    Amandas Journey

Congrats on your decision to get healthier! Please do some research on long term effects of the band. I am one of the failure statistics and I am in daily pain as I wait to get this thing out. If your band slips or your have to have revision surgery, the recovery really isn't that much shorter. Good luck with your decision! I have found this forum to be such a source of great information and support.
  18. Thanks for all of the support...I am going with the Bypass...I have a hiatal hernia, dial aged duct at the tail of my pancreas due to difficulty with my removed gallstones and the reflux in my stomach is out of control....No one is cutting my stomach after what I have put it through with the band....Next week is my endoscopy.I am building a case for a revision ...hopefully insurance will pay.
  19. I am still undecided because this band is making my life a living hell...revision must happen either way.
  20. Lou:)

    Starting my journey

I am getting a revision from the band to the bypass in three weeks.
  21. I had the sleeve on 9/22/14 and am never hungry. I have to remind myself to eat otherwise I could go all day just drinking liquids. I chose the sleeve because I didn't want a blind stomach, the change in anatomy (besides part of my stomach being removed), and I'm a volume eater. You can still dump with the sleeve! I haven't had a major episode, but really fatty foods like Peanut Butter and sugary things like jelly bother me. I spent the first month drinking tea and Water and now I'm drinking Isopure black tea mixed with regular tea. It tastes like crystal light or Lipton packets and I get my Protein. I still can't eat much, I know they say that both the sleeve and bypass can stretch, but I'm never going to eat more than I should and have given up soda! How I miss it! But I took a tiny sip and let it sit on my tongue and it tastes so sweet and fake! No more diet coke for me! I also have no comorbidities, which is why some choose bypass over the sleeve. You can always go from sleeve to bypass if it doesn't work, but after bypass the only thing you can do is revision or band over pouch like Carnie Wilson did. I also didn't want to ever be scoped by a doctor or paramedic and having my bypass pouch perforated. Most bypass patients wear medical bracelets after surgery.

Let's talk hunger: sleeve versus bypass

I've had both and yes the VSG does remove hunger. I never felt hunger for the first few years. I did get it back around year 3, but it's gone again since I have revised.
  23. Rush, while I am new to the sleeve, I'm not new to counting protein as I had to do so with the band prior to my revision. Some helpful ideas if you can't get the texture tolerable might be to use a blender and make your own shakes. One of my favorites has been vanilla powder with skim milk and add a banana and some peanut butter, but you can mix and match, add ice, use some water instead of just milk, use Greek yogurt, or try all kinds of different conglomerations to suit your preferences.
  24. I would ask these questions: 1. How many bands has he/she placed, you are looking for a high number, a couple of hundred is a good. 2. How many revisions to other surgeries have they had to do, if they take out more bands than they put in--run, ideally you want a very low revision rate to any other surgery. 3. Aftercare is MORE important than the band, ideally you want a surgeon that do his own fills, but if he is busy, ask if he has a physician assistant that is trained in surgery as well as perform fills. Also part of aftercare is diagnosing and treating any type of lap band issues, you want to make sure that your surgeon will not outsource this, many lap band surgeons either work closely with GI doctors to do EGD's or Radiologist to do Upper Gi,'s etc, and most lap band surgeons are skilled to fix hernias, etc. Also your lap band surgeon should ONLY treat and diagnose any lap band related issues you may have, such as determining if your band is adjusted properly and following your progress, you don't want a PCP doing this, they are not skilled to do so. 4. Fills, should be administered by your surgeon, or a skilled PA, not just anyone. Ideally you want a surgeon that will be available to fill/ or unfill your band if needed and not on a set schedule, but ideally every 4/6 weeks the first year. Good luck
  25. I can understand your fear of failing again as I had that feeling myself. I on the other hand was never successful with the band and was not the right choice for me. So I can't say I lost 100 lbs and gained it back because I never lost it in the first place. So basically after a year of it not working for me I started getting reflux issues and my surgeon removed it last Friday. I chose not to revise because I didn't want to go through that fear of failure and the stress it caused me. I would never suggest any type of WLS to another person because I couldn't do it in good conscious. I can tell you though that I am much happier now that mine is removed. I can also tell you that my 20 year old daughter had RNY surgery last May and has lost over 120 lbs since then and so far is doing well even though she's gone through 2 strictures which caused a fairly quick weightloss which is not normal. So even though my situation is a bit different than yours I hope some of my information has been helpful. I also think you should discuss your fears and issues with WLS with a professional before going on to have another surgery. Good luck to you Nancy.
