Premier shakes are popular, but I never liked them - I can taste the protein in them. Everyone's tastes are different, so you're likely to get a lot of different answers, but my favorite brands are Unjury (available only on Unjury's Web site) and Syntrax (available at lots of places - both stores and online - including Bariatric Pal's store). Get single packets if you can in case you don't like them - it'd be awful being stuck with some $30 (or more) tub of something that you hate.

All plans look different. Make sure you are following foods on your dietician’s post-surgery plan. Some carbs may be allowed on certain diet stages. Check your plan for the type and amount allowed. Bariatric Basics - Log your food, stay within your weight loss calorie and carbohydrate range. Hit your protein goal.

There is no doubt in my mind that oatmeal is very nutritious and even high in fiber. It just does not fit into the protein first rule that bariatric patients are supposed to live by. I love steel cut oats myself. Still I will be waiting until I am in maintenance to enjoy occasionally. Carbs are carbs when thinking in terms of losing weight. I am going for optimal weight loss. 🙂

New mommy Pregnancy postpartum and Bypass struggles
jessestapes2017 posted a topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Hello I am jessica I’ve been a WLS patient since September 2015, had a partial tummy tuck two years ago, and recently had my first child with the help of God and the surgery but now I am struggling A LOT I’m trying to accept myself physically even more than before I had surgery. My SW was 475 I got down to 214 then got pregnant and now I’m back to 320, I love my son more than I ever thought I could ever love anyone, he is my world which is why I worry so much now. I need to be able to stay healthy so I can keep up with him as he grows into the person he is going to be. I recently lost my bariatric team due to my insurance changing and now My anxiety for my health is on a whole new level right now. I have an appointment this week with my PCP and hope we can get this figured out. I’m going to see if she will do all the bloodwork for me and see where I am as a baseline and start over point. Anyone else ever felt like this post baby? I still feel like my pouch has been distorted and stretched and struggling with the portion control and not having dumping syndrome anymore, I feel like mytool stopped working as I got worse at working it. -
Nicotine causes marginal ulcers and slowed wound healing in bariatric patients. If you are vaping without nicotine, it won't have anymore of an adverse effect on you than it would someone who never had the surgery. There's still not much data on whether or not the chemicals in the vape juice are harmful when taken into the lungs. The medical community can only say emphatically that nicotine will break down the internal suture points especially in a gastric bypass patient causing ulcers and leakage. With all that said, I enjoyed vaping but did feel like I had pneumonia all the time. I'm pretty sure it's risky behavior and like any vice, if I started up again I would be gambling with my health. Good luck with your choice.

June 2019 Surgery Siblings!
Blossom2369 replied to BulletWithButterflyWings's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi! My name is Tiffany. I am a 50 year old mom of 3 adult kids. I had the lap band from 2005-2012. Never lost weight. Followed the program to the letter. My doc used to guilt me and tell me I was his only “failure”. He didn’t even offer me the choice of revision when I had the band removed. Unfortunately I’ve been misinformed for the past 7 years. People told me I couldn’t have another bariatric surgery after failing one. My PCP moved and I mentioned it to my new doc and she told me I could indeed have another bariatric surgery. I’m an oncology RN that has been disabled since 2012. All of my visits are done, I’m waiting for the surgeons office to call with a date, but he thinks the end of June. Not, by the way the same surgeon!! -
overeating after gastric sleeve
Healthy_life2 replied to MaryNa's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I understand how weight gain can mess with your head. You are not alone. Many are here working a weight gain off on their own or having revisions. Surgery is only a tool. I think @round2wi explained things better than I ever could. Counseling is a good option to address your overeating issues. As for stretching, get it diagnosed by a surgeon to see if its due to complications, a botched surgery or overeating. If its overeating, get counseling so that you don’t stretch a second surgery. What I wish sleeve patients would know before surgery. (this might not be your situation) The sleeve might not be the right choice for some people. Your restriction will become less over time. It’s not back to full size but, you can hold more food volume. This is common experience with the sleeve. Just because you we hold more food does not mean we have to eat over our calories and macros and gain weight. It’s easy to graze/ eat around any type of bariatric surgery. Eating several smaller meals of healthy and non-healthy foods that total over your daily calories/macros. You don’t feel any surgery restriction with small meals. It’s as if you never had surgery. You will gain weight. -
Climbing back on the wagon - Advice?
coyote replied to coyote's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Thank you all so much! I've been avoiding coming back here because I was afraid of people totally railing me for not sticking to the program... I don't do well with tough love! But I realized it's me that I've been afraid of. I've been my absolute worst enemy, and I constantly tell myself I'm worthless and knew I'd fail. I'd never let someone else treat me that way, so why I do I do this to myself? Thanks to you all for your support. I'm officially heading back on track and I'm so excited about that. I went to the grocery store this afternoon and picked up so many bariatric-friendly foods and have started reading sleeve stories about failure and redemption. I know I can do it, and I think you all will start seeing me around here again. Coyote -
Ultimately. Choose the type of surgery you want. Research take your Drs suggestion into consideration. Ask your insurance what types of surgery they cover. Have your friend go to an information seminar. I know what the statistics say on each surgery. There are no absolute stats/results with any type of bariatric procedure. Some of lose slow and others lose fast. Sex, age, hormones, complications, medical issues, medications, genetics are factors on the rate you lose and how much you lose. The only part of Weight loss surgery that is in our control is how you work your plan. We are all more than the statistics. I guess you can say I don’t fit the statistics/norm of a sleeve procedure. I lost fast. starting 254 to 140 in six months. I had no complications. I bounced back from surgery quickly. Five years out I maintain in the 130’s. Most people that are maintaining and doing well don’t stay on this site. Not many vets hang around. I’m not sure if people are getting a balanced look at WLS outcomes. Revisions are done on all types of surgery for many reasons. I’m hoping to see an official revision thread. I would like to know why we are seeing so many revisions. I’m now talking to people that have had three surgeries. For me absolutely no regret.

I did not read most of the replies, but I previously had a band in 2010. I chose it because it was “least invasive”, or so I thought. I lost allllllllllll of my weigh with it beautifully, followed all the rules etc. After two back to back deaths I couldn’t eat anything & was put on liquids a week. Following that, I began throwing up from eating + ultimately ended with a slip. It was VERY hard finding a revision surgeon. Even my original surgeon (a top bariatric surgeon in ATL) no longer performs the band surgery. I finally found a surgeon I loved, but he also refused and equated it to “ walking around with an iPhone 3 in 2019 when technology has surpassed it”. All of my fave 7 banders, besides 2 , have also said goodbye to the band. I, for one, LOVED my band and am in no way trying to discourage anyone. I am simply speaking my truth and sharing the opinions of other surgeons. I believe that complications and advances in medicine may contribute to the decline in banders..... I successfully revised to the MGB.

I live in NC and have established care with a surgeon for WLS. I just found out we may be relocating to Sioux Falls SD per my husbands job. I've been researching the area in the event we do move (there's a very strong chance we are moving), but I'm wondering if anyone is from the area and can recommend surgeons/bariatric programs/etc. I'm at a total loss because this came up so unexpectedly. I am feeling frustrated and anxious that this might be a setback, but maybe it's for the best? Thank you

Well I have made it out to the living room and my Caramel protein shake with the Miralax stirred in. I think the companies make them so repulsive so you are willing to move on to other proteins, well I'm doing the best I can to keep Premier Protein and Abbot Labratories in business. Do you realize I have been on facets of this diet since August 1st 2018? Long time Passing, not over yet! Bariatric Team says my pouch, my jujenal ulcers will heal and then I will move on and be like Everyone Else. The fact I am a Limited Edition, never been Average or Normal, has no relevancy, am I correct? Went and looked at me in the mirror when I got up, well there I am! A non-fat face, slightly sallow, wrinkled and with sunk- in cheeks, moved to one side, the reflection moved too, so it has Got To Be Me! Surely don't Look like my ID picture anymore. But I am 214 pounds, better that than 365+ I once was. Maybe even the shallow people will love me pretty soon, they sure ignored the Obese me pretty well. I guess we were non- people then, and beneath their notice. Now if a guy whistles at me, it's either just air escaping or he's calling his Dog.

February 2019 weight loss buds
Sheribear68 replied to TheMarine79's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Same. I have such a phobia of vomiting that I’ve been known to spend hours upon hours miserable during my lifetime when throwing up would’ve made me feel so much better. I literally just cannot physically bear the thought of it. 🤷♀️ When I tell people I haven’t vomited once during chemo, or pregnancies, drinking too much, or stomach viruses or bariatric surgery they look at me with skepticism, but it’s the absolute truth. I think what’s helped me more than anything with this experience is that I too am an extremely cautious eater. The instant I feel anything going on with my new sleeve, I immediately set down my fork and I’ve even stopped with a bite of food mid-way to my mouth. After I get over the feeling of sadness, I’m happy because of the smaller, fitter me -

I'm going through REX Bariatrics in Raleigh -
I'm about a month and a half out from my surgery, and I've lost 43 lbs. My scale number on Friday morning said 315 lbs. This morning, it was 317-318. Think this is just normal fluctuation? My diet hasn't changed, and I'm getting in my 60-80 grams of protein a day and all my water. I did try something this weekend that I ordered from the bariatric pal store, the guilt-free brownies that have 22 grams of protein in them per brownie. (Could only eat half a brownie at a time) I still ate under 700 calories per day. Weight gain makes little sense to me at this point unless it's just fluctuation or retaining a bit of water

I feel worse if I eat than if I don't. Hope that doesn't mean I'm teetering on the brink of anorexia. After being accused of gluttony so long " She could lose that weight, She LIKES being so fat!" that would be the Universe reaking it's revenge. Maybe get out a chilled protein shake, and add my morning dose of Miralax. After the Grand Purging Enema of Milk and Molasses last Friday afternoon, I have not had anything except flatus and loose mucus since Saturday morning. Oh I hope I have not dropped into Same Old Same Old. Been back to double Miralax, have Ducolax and M..O.M. in reserve. Should i invest in Colace? Believe I can take the pills but liquid made me So So Sick when I was in OSU last November receiving my PICC line et cetera. Maybe my destiny is to be a Little Old Lady Full of S***, even started. to start eating the mashed up veggies from my soups. What next? Would love to eat Bran Cereal, somebody told me a full cup would make me a Regular Woman, difficult when you ingest 2-3 oz a feeding. Maybe go talk to PCP, not booked in at Bariatric Clinic until June/July EGJ/Endoscopy, they all keep telling me I am doing Wonderful, well my colon stays Full, not sure of the Wonder part?💩I think maybe my rectal muscles are tired, maybe shot so bad they don't want to contract and push. So peristalsis packs me full but my anus just has snapped tightly shut! At least that is my Working Theory, can anybody repute it?

Many of us have done the pouch reset to get back on track. The other option is to go back to your bariatric diet plan. (Log stay within calories/macros, hydrate and exercise) For motivation join the May weight loss challenge. https://www.bariatricpal.com/topic/424941-❤-may-2019-challenge❤/

Let's talk about body dysmorphia
ashsleeved21 replied to Lochnessamber's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hi! I'm really glad I found this thread. Reading some of what you have to say makes me feel so much better in that I am not alone in what I am feeling. At my highest (probably around 250, although my official start weight was 238), I never felt "big". However, now I feel huge. I currently weight about 127, and although I wear a size 0/2, I still feel like I have another 20/30 lbs to lose, although that is certainly not the case. I'm about 5'3 for reference. I've talked with my surgeon about my case and he referred me to a specialist that I will be meeting with (hopefully) soon. It's a very weird emotion to describe because although I know in my head that I am no longer fat, something in my heart says that I will always be fat. I've tried explaining this emotion to my best friend but it seems as though people outside the bariatric world do not understand. -
Any one in North Carolina that has had it will be having WLS? Would love to connect with some local folks and share our journey. I recently had RNY Gastric Bypass on May 7, 3019.

My husband suffers from horrible gout in his toes and ankles. It literally cripples him when he is having an attack. He can fortunately take NSAIDs which sort of helps but I know Bariatric patients can’t take them. His Dr told him it’s caused by foods rich in purins. I know specifically like red meats, seafoods, mushrooms, cauliflower and definitely alcohol. I don’t know how far out you are from surgery but maybe it’s from something you are consuming more of or maybe just from levels being out of whack and causing more Uric acid. He also ices it (if you can stand the weight of the ice on it) and elevates it. Fortunately the attacks only last about 48 hrs.

June 2019 Surgery Siblings!
JamesL73 replied to BulletWithButterflyWings's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thank you....With the RNY, there are two suture junctions (anastomosis) which is how they form the "Y". With the MGB, there is only one anastomosis. In an MGB done as an original surgery, they would leave the duodenum attached to the remaining stomach that is left after creating the sleeve, this would allow for the stomach acids to still flow down the intestine and meet the food further down. The newly created sleeve gets attached approximately 7 feet further down on the intestine. This MGB procedure couples the restriction of the sleeve with the malabsorption of bypassing the duodenum and most of the jejunum. This procedure is far less complicated for the surgeon, there are less complications health wise for the patient like bile and acid reflux that can be very common in both the sleeve and RNY. It is less time under sedation, as well as less recovery time, from what I have read. Now, the question I have yet to have answered from anyone is how this procedure differs in those of us who have already been sleeved and no longer have that remaining stomach attached to the duodenum, and therefore, no stomach acids flowing down to aid in digestion. If/when I find out, I will try to remember to update this. I should add that, even though the MGB seems to be the far better choice over RNY, it is still fairly new and not yet approved by the FDA or the ASMBA (American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery) so there is most likely no US insurance that will cover it and also very few US surgeons who will perform it. It has become the preferred procedure of surgeons in Mexico and other countries that don't have all the strict bureaucratic BS to deal with. -
I’m sure there are post out there but I am looking for input from those who have bcbs Alabama. I recently switched jobs and the company insurance covers bariatric surgery. I have looked at my plan but can’t find how much it actually covers. For those of you who have it and have used it for your surgery, what % did the insurance pay and how long did you have to wait for the surgery? TIA
