    Owww... to much?

Do it again tomorrow. And again the day after. And the day after that. No way 20 minutes walking is going to do you any harm. By the end of the week you'll actually be enjoying it and looking forward to your workouts. Remember, nothing comes easy. No pain, no gain.

    A Magic Bullet

For many years prior to my Weight Loss Surgery, I was waiting for a magic bullet [no, not the blender] to come along and make it very easy for me to lose my excess weight. Some new drug or Vitamin that made the process very easy. Many weight loss drugs were introduced through the years but many had adverse side-effects, some were outright dangerous. Well, a new device called AspireAssist was just approved by the FDA. The device works by restricting caloric absorption and decreasing the rate of eating/chewing. Under conscious sedation and with the use of an endoscope, a tube is placed within the upper portion of the stomach, with the other end attached to the surface of the abdomen through a secured port. The device is then attached to the port when the patient is ready to aspirate, 20-30 minutes after a meal. Approximately 30 percent of the caloric intake from the meal can be emptied directly into the toilet, requiring about 10-15 minutes in all for the aspiration process. http://acsh.org/news/2016/07/14/fda-approves-new-way-to-purge-calories/ [i remember reading stories that the Romans used binge and purge cycles in the process of overeating. When they were full they would go and vomit out their stomach content so they could continue eating. Apparently some of those stories were false but the myth remains. http://history.howstuffworks.com/history-vs-myth/did-romans-purge-bellies-in-vomitoriums.htm] The device, called AspireAssist, is marketed for obese patients with a BMI between 35-55 who have been unable to lose, or maintain loss of weight, using non-surgical methods. Though it has been available to the European Union population since 2012, it recently gained FDA approval in the United States. Results of a one-year U.S. clinical trial showed that participants (n=171) who used the device, in addition to counseling, lost 12 percent of their initial weight on average, when compared to a 4 percent weight loss in those in the counseling only arm of the study. Well, I am glad I didn't wait around for this one.

    Gym

I started training pre-op to help with the weight loss and to get into a healthier lifestyle. Post-op, my surgeon cleared me for cardio about two weeks after surgery, then cleared me for strength training after a month. I took it very slow to compensate for the decreased calories and surgical recovery. Best of luck on your journey.

    July 30th sleeve!

I am 9 days out... I am glad I did it... but no one told me of the weight stalls. Just be prepared for anything. Things that changed this past week.... 1. SMELLS are exaggerated and some are deceiving. Have a hanky ready if you are in a public place to breathe through. I sat next to a guy eating beef Jerky on the airplane on the way back from hospital. I thought the jerky smelled like road kill. and the stewardess had some awful perfume... the combo was not pleasant! 2. those first days of drinking... a sip means a teaspoon...not a tablespoon... else OUCH 3. prepare for nap time for at least the first 10 days (cause that is where I am at) 4. make sure you have Gas X strips! I took some on the way home from hospital... boy do they help with the gas pains. 5. try to find a couple clear Protein drinks... I like unjury chicken broth... but it is getting old. and Isopure (rightfully nicknamed isopuke) 6. Have some adult liquid Tylenol for when you get home, OR have a way to crush some pain pills. 7. your gauze when you get home... get the kind that doesn't stick to wounds.... learned that the hard way! 8. stock up with your Clear liquids and have a variety. (fruity G2 and Jello... gets old too. ) and get rest! Good luck with your surgery!

    You Go Girl

 I finally did it, I made the call after searching and reading up on surgerys :sick i did it , I went to my Oreintation last week at the hospital, and found it quite interesting, I was full of questions and had my application ready for her, how ever i had to do a insurance verification call which pesimist i am was surprised I am covered, and do not need a wait list for weight loss, just the nessary requirements of body mass and so on, which i qualify. I am only 5'2" and weighing in at a hefty 213 when i went to oreintation, after listening to them saying i would have to loose some weight i have already lost 2 lbs:clap2: . I emailed the nurse and insurance rep. at the hosp. and have talked to my doc which again i though i would have problems but he was all for it says it should help with diabetic problems and with the pain in leggs, and cholesterol. so I emailed again and told the np that and am waiting for a apt for doc and food doc, and with the phys, still have two more seminars as well. This is not going to be easy, reading and hearing the problems im not so sure will come back when i hear from the hospital for apt with docs. :cry :violin:  for me

    no loss?

Way too soon to be frustrated, plenty of time for that We've all been there, and I understand that it just can't come off fast enough! But it's normal to gain a little in the beginning, it's just water weight from the insult to your body from the surgery. Just follow your plan and the scale will drop. And - it's normal to not lose at all for periods of time, and it's normal to see a big drop for no apparent reason. Weight just doesn't come of in a predictable way, but I do think your body is shifting and adjusting all the time. Good luck.
  8. Hi, I was sleeved on Monday the 21st so its been 4 days, I'm doing everything right but I've actually gained a pound. This is so frustrating

    On to mushies!!!!

I just went to the doctor today for my 1 week check-up and everything is going so good that I can now start mushies and within a week go to soft foods! I am so excited I scheduled my first fill for July 6th. My doctor likes to fill about once a month to really help with the weight loss, so I am nervous, but excited to be progressing towards that first fill. I had sugar free pudding today for the first time in awhile and it was sooooo good! I'm excited to move to a stage that isn't liquid and actually contains food! I was told I could have very thin lunch meats, string cheese, beans, etc. so I am stoked about spending dinner actually eating with my family instead of me drinking and them eating! As long as I can tolerate this food then I can progress to other things. Hopefully I can tolerate it and not have to go back to liquids!
  10. Hello today is the big day . I am getting a revision from the lap band to the sleeve , I go in at 9:30 am . I had the band put in twice the first time I contracted h pilorie or what ever it was which caused a lot of vomiting and acid . Which Inturn caused the band to bend the stomach. So they took it out but before they did I lost a 100 pounds I was 430 when I had the band drop to 330 . Then they put it in again but just maintained it . But then I started having problems , they now are saying it is bending the stomach and some of the fluid is missing .so now today I will get the sleeve I gained 20 pounds unfortunately .so I am up to 350 ..looking forward for the new lifestyle and hopefully no more constant hunger pains that never seem to get satisfied .
  11. My Band was too tight, had it unfilled and over the last 5 months have gained 28 lbs back. It's either too tight or too loose. How often can I ask my doc to try again for a better fit? Support and words of wisdom needed!

What's your weight loss like? R u doing 3 meals day and then the PROTIEN bars r your 2 snacks? I have been using watermelon as one of my snacks and a popcycle or an egg for snacks. I dont know how many calories I have a day. I am following 3 guidelines/rules.... 1. 55 to 85 protein a day 2. No more than 2 snacks, 3 meals 3. If the food items fat calories comes out to more than 50% of total calories per serving, I DON'T BUY IT. 4 water, water, water 5. Exercise 6 days a week, oopsie more than 3
  13. Initially, (the first 6 weeks out of surgery) I had emotional/anxiety/depression issues and was terrified of my 40lb weight loss, in such a short time. Now that my emotional issues are being managed, (more or less), through medical/medicine intervention...and food no longer is repulsive to me, I am eating/drinking approximately 600-800 cals a day. I'm weighing myself for the past two weeks and the scale fluctuates between 186-188lbs. I don't get it! I workout on the treadmill at the local Ballys and use some of the exercise equipment but the lbs are just not budging. At this rate, I can't even imagine myself even near goal...my hopes and dreams of a fit and lean body are becoming just that...wishful thinking. I just don't get how taking in less than half of the calories I used to pre-surgery isn't having an impact on my weight. Even some family members are questioning if this surgery was worth it. It's 2 weeks and I'm still weighing 187-188 lbs! This is some hell of a stall! I feel like I did pre surgery every time I tried to go on a diet. And, I may be put on an antidepressant next week so now I'm wondering if that will help or hinder my weight loss mission. Any insights will be appreciated very much. Thanks.

    Hello

Hi all I had a Midband fitted in March this year in France though I live in England. I have lost about 32lbs so far, though I think I need another fill. I am loving being banded (not the Pbing) and cant wait to lose even more weight. It will be good to get some extra support and be able to share my experiences with others. Hunnie

    Victory!

I found some jeans that really fit my body well and bought a size 18 last month. (Maruices jeans--they have a ton of different cuts so you can find your right fit--the jeans are awesome--like life-changing--you should try them!) They went on sale, so I got a 16 and a 14 so I would have them when the time came. I put the size 16 on to see how much more I had to go to get there, and they fit. I was shocked. I have only been down to this size once in my adult life--and it was for a brief period of time. I then went to work and was summoned to a meeting. I was bored, and my mind wandered. The guy beside me dropped his pen..i went to pick it up and realized--my chair was wider than my hips. Yes, ladies and gentlemen---I had more chair than a$$ for the first time ever. I started this job right before my surgery, and that same chair used to dig into my legs and hips so much it caused bruises. Later, I went to dinner with a friend and our kids. I took my toddler to the restroom and passed a guy sitting alone in the restaurant. When I headed back to the table, he winked at me. He was a nice-looking man, and he was flirting with me. I sat down and began the process of convincing myself I was mistaken. A nice-looking man would not flirt with a woman who is my size--he was just being polite ....etc.... A couple of minutes later he finished his meal and came over to the table...introduced himself to me--and gave me his number. Now I was sitting with my best friend--who is beautiful and a solid size 8 at her heaviest weight ever. He was polite, but pretty much ignored her and focused totally on me. It felt amazing. I still have a lot of weight to lose, but for the first time in a really long time, I feel like a normal person. A size 16 is still a plus size--I know--but I am an hourglass, so I can carry more weight than a lot of women. I feel good about myself and the way I look. I am so glad I had this surgery done. What feels even better is knowing that this weight loss is permanent because I have what I need to maintain it.

I have a headache...im more bitchy than usual....could be pms as well...but I wanna eat dammit.Im back to liquids three times a day for two days....then liquids two times a day and a pureed meal, for two days....then two shakes and a regular meal. im dying for the regular meal. i wll be okay....just need to go to bed
  19. Hi I don't have anything bad to say about the lapband I was a poster child for them as far as having one. I stop seeing my WLC because of being billed for fills I never got and it got to the point that they sent me a letter saying they would no longer see me............. I have a question about it getting removed if it has to come out do you have to have a weight loss surgeon to do it or can any dr remove it? The reason I am asking is yesterday I got my CT report from my cancer dr and he said it had moved up alot and he felt it needed to be removed right away........... I got my band in 09 lost 150 lbs and have kept it off all this time with only 4 cc in my 10 cc band. I have had some problems with pb's the last few months but blamed it on stress and not being careful when eating... The dr that did this was 4 hours away and that isn't something I can do at this time if they would see me as I am not sure they would even do that after all the problem I caused over the charges, as I did report it to my insurance company and showed the poof. thanks for any answers. Julia
  20. In researching VSG I came across an interesting explanation as to why some insurance plans cover weight loss surgery and others do not. I can't confirm the accuracy of this explanation but it sounds very plausible. There are generally two kinds of insurance plans: employer funded and commercial plans. Employer funded plans are used by many employers with more than 500 participants as it is more cost effective to fund their own plans. They will use an insurer to administer the plan, but since most of the funding comes from the employer they have a big say in what is covered (within lawful restrictions). Commercial plans are offered by insurers to the general public, or to smaller employers. They are funded by the insurance company through premiums and investment of their assets. The health plan, not the employer is on the hook for costs in this case. Many commercial plans do not cover WLS because they realize that their membership is very transient and change plans often. For example someone who is a member of a Blues plan this year is likely to be a UHC or Cigna member next year. Health plans understand the long term healthcare cost savings of WLS but do not want to spend their dollars today to generate savings that will help out the plans the member will participate in 5 or 10 years down the road. Many employer plans take a longer view of this situation, realizing that as long as you are employed with them they will have responsibility for your healthcare costs, and thus are more likely to pay for WLS as a long term investment in your health. So when a health plan denies coverage or publishes a specific exclusion, they may not be stupid, just focused on their short term financials.
  21. Hi, So I finished my 3 month pre op. The dr office called me today and said that most likely my insurance will not cover the surgery since I had gained 17pds.. I am devastated!! I explained to them that I had been taking Phentermine for over 3 years and as soon as I stopped taking it I have gained like crazy!!! I feel like I have changed my eating habits.. At times I feel like I was starving yet I still gained??? I am frustrated at this point. I was suppose to have surgery next Friday September 26. But the lady at the doctors office said she is most positive that my insurance will deny it. Has anyone had this problem where they gained weight while at pre-op and what did your insurance say?

    Heartburn?

Just out of curiosity why does bypass scare the crap out of you? I was going to have the sleeve and then because of reflux we decided the better surgery for me was bypass. I was scared to death to because all of the horror stories. I spent some time with both my bariatric team, my gastroenterologist as well as many bypass patients. I was most afraid of the malabsorption component. I then learned very quickly that it actually helps you to lose weight and honestly both bypass and sleeve patients have to have blood work and take Vitamins for life. The biggest thing they warned me about was not going in for yearly nutritional panels and skipping vitamins. As long as you do that which you also have to do with the sleeve as well, you should be good. I am two years post op, have lost all my weight and comorbitities, am very healthy and thank god every day that i went bypass as i have not even had a simple case of heartburn since the day i woke up from surgery. Spend some time and really research so you make the best choice for your health. I have seen way too many sleeve patients then have to revise to bypass anyway. I decided i was only going through this one time in my life. Both surgeries are equally as aggressive. The sleeve removes 90% of your stomach, the bypass reroutes. Just my two cents....take it for what it is worth but don't be afraid, be educated about your choices.
  23. :rolleyes2: I am scheduled to be banded tomorrow. So far, I've lost about 11 lbs. on the pre-diet. I hope that's enough weight to "de-fat" my liver some. I am getting a little nervous. The hospital called and wants me to be there at 7:00 tomorrow morning. Wish me luck. I'll try to post later in the weekend.
  24. Hello all, This is my first post I just found this app. I have been on a program at my local bariatric center since August of 2013. My insurance required I see a therapist, a nutrionalist, 12 months of weigh-ins and to lose 10% of my body weight. I started out at my top weight of 523...started the program at 511. I now weigh 425 at the end of the year program. I got my letter of approval in the mail a few days ago for the gastric sleeve. Im very excited and nervous. I have learned a lot over the last year but still have a lot of questions everyday that pop in my head. Very glad to have found this forum. My surgery date is November 10th , pre-op is on Nov. 6th. I have been married to 12 years to my beautiful supportive wife and have 4 wonderful children. Im so excited for my new life and getting this weight off. Thanks for reading Alan

    Nutritionist or Registered Dietitian

I am on the other side of the Pacific Ocean ... in eastern Australia. The same nomenclature and classifications apply here. There's apples and there's other apples when it comes to dietitians. In 2015, I saw a very young but standard-trained dietitian who was quite right about my problems with portion size but was very much a proponent of eating everything from the late 20th Century's agricultural bounty. My current dietitian, as part of the weight loss practice is better at accepting less traditional dietary sources and choices but she is singular about using protein weight-loss shakes from one particular brand. There are 99% identically composed weight loss shakes that are cheaper. There are also lots of lower sugar protein and weight loss shakes that don't burn my wallet either. They are both well trained and certified but they have their own trolleys to push, so to speak.
