Before getting sleeved, going to the gym everyday to weight train© Myself

Today I gained weight for the second time since I had the gastric sleeve surgery three weeks ago. I was 700 grams heavier today than I was yesterday, or 1,5 pounds. Last time this happened was a week after the procedure, when I gained 400 grams one day (a little under a pound) and then the day after I weighed the same as I did two days before. I weigh myself every day, and have done for a long time. I realise that weight fluctuations can happen, but I'm still a little shaken that they can happen when I'm only eating a few hundred calories per day. Yesterday, I ate around 800 calories, which is about the highest I've gone. Usually, I'm around 4-500 and not really hitting my protein target. I am hitting my water targets, so I'm not dehydrated. According to the UCLA Center for human nutrition, most people need at least 1200 calories per day just to survive, and eating less than 1000 is essentially starvation. So how can I gain weight on what is essentially a starvation diet? I'm not working out a lot, but I walk to and from work every day..

where did you loose weight first?
kcuster83 replied to KimA-GA's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I carry MOST of my weight in my abdomen. So naturally I lost the most there, I have always had smaller legs and arms. last time I measured I was 3 months post op and had lost 16 or 17 inches in my waist alone but basically stayed the same within 1/2 inch every where else. My face has also changed a lot, you can see my jaw line now. (slightly, but it is still there) Anyway, overall definitely my stomach/waist. -
I am pre op but have lost over 60 lbs already. I was expecting to loose some face fat by now but pictures really haven’t shown a difference… however over the last year i have lost about 8” around my midsection and 2” on my chest and about 1/2” each of my thighs… where did you “loose first”? when did you start loosing the face fat/reduced chin and neck??

PO 5 years and things changing
Terri Belcher posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hi y’all. My original surgery was an RNY done on August 1, 2017, so 5 years post op now. Recently I’ve been having a very nasty acidic metallic type taste in my mouth every day. I’m being told that sounds like acid reflux. I’ve never had it before so don’t know. Since Covid and working at home full time and having all the bad for me foods within reach, I’ve put all my weight back on. I am so disgusted with myself!! But I am still at least trying to make an attempt at losing. My doctors have me on Metformin and Topomax. But they’re not doing anything. My health has went downhill quickly. And things with my health just keep getting worse!! I have an appointment with a different surgeon to speak about a revision and if I could be a candidate on September 15th What do you think my chances of being accepted into his program to get a revision are? My insurance covers but need 6 months of dietary visits. What should I expect on the initial visit with the surgeon on the 15th? -
I think I have an ulcer. I've had pain midway between my belly button and sternum (i think that's what it called) or breastbone. Whatever. Pain is worse when my pouch is empty and goes away for a bit after I eat and I have called the surgeon's office 3 times, its always she will call you back. Yeaaaa At this point they can kiss it where the sun don't shine. I left a message to my primary to see what she can do to help me out. I started taking Omeprazole (OTC) to help and low and behold no more pain or rumbling tummy. So symptoms are managed. Only thing I noticed is the weight loss has increased. I usually lose up to 3 lbs per week and it's about 1 lbs a day so that's a bit concerning. Not complaining but just a tad concerned. Anyone have an ulcer? How long did it take to heal?

As mentioned above you probably are gaining muscle and muscle weighs more than fat. As long as something is moving (inches) then you ARE losing. If nothing moves at all then it would be maintenance, but I don't think you're there quite yet. I'd say not to stress about it, but I'm sure it's next to impossible not to.

Those of you 1+ year post op….

Biggest Change: I developed a wheat allergy after surgery (3% chance. They don't warn you) so learning to check every label for ingredients so as to not make myself sick has been a new experience in paranoia, and I have to cook every meal in my house because going out to eat is almost impossible when you have a wheat allergy. Biggest Surprise: My clothing size. When I was in the 180's when I was in middle school I was a size 16. That's what I expected to be. I'm a 12 in jeans and a medium in tops. That was a shock. A pleasant one. But a shock. Biggest Challenge: I have had a Trigeminal Neuralgia flare since April 2022 and was put on an anti-convulsant (Gabapentin) that caused me to gain 18 pounds. Now that I'm weaning myself off of it after being put on a different one (Oxcarbazepine) I've lost about half of the weight I gained, but am struggling to lose the other half. I stress out over that extra weight so much... Biggest Personal Victory: For me, it was getting out of the 'obese' category and being 'overweight' instead. I cried. -

The most interesting revelation in considering these questions is that WLS has not been the overwhelming consideration over the years. what’s been your biggest change? Seating. When travelling, airline seat size is no longer a consideration. When renting a car, seat size is no longer a consideration. Theater seat sizes are no longer a consideration. Restaurant seat or booth sizes are no longer an issue. Folding chairs are no longer fear inducing. what was the biggest surprise? I honestly don't recall any surprises. I had done crazy research before I decided on WLS, so there were no surprises related to surgery, the recovery, the diet, or anything. I wasn't concerned with the post-op diet because proteins were my favorite parts of meals. Can the biggest surprise being that there were no big surprises? biggest challenge? The one challenge I took seriously is that weight and dieting would not be the center of my life once I lost my weight. I was not going to be on a diet for the rest of my life. My surgeon's plan was basically that I started with my lifetime maintenance diet from day one. So, from day one I started building my lifetime habit so that by time I lost my excess weight my lifetime eating habits had been built into me. So my biggest challenge was anti-climatic, it was my new normal. Additionally, a major aspect of this is that I don't weigh at home. I only weigh at my annual physicals biggest personal victory? This is probably the easiest questions of the four. I ran 5 marathons, one of which was the San Francisco marathon where I got to run across the Golden Gate Bridge. I ran two Long Beach Marathons, which started and ended at the Queen Mary. One was the Surf City Marathon. So 4 marathons were on the Pacific Coast. The 5th was the Valley of Fire Marathon which was just outside of Las Vegas. -
Questions to Ask Before Surgery?
catwoman7 replied to SpartanMaker's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
it's sleeve - there are different bougie sizes. But I'm not sure if all surgeons ask for your preference. there is one revision to bypass where they can bypass more of the small intestine for some additional weight loss- but that doesn't seem to be a very common form of revision. For a virgin surgery, I don't know that anyone ever asks for your preference...or I should say, at least I've never heard of that. -
Thank you, yeah the scale not moving is what’s stressing me out. Gaining my thighs and butt back via exercise after losing them post VSG had been nice.
-
Like you I went months without losing and I had to accept that I was not going to reach my second goal. My body was just happy where it was. The fact that you say you are losing inches though makes me think that maybe you should hang in there trying for a bit longer though and see if you are just gaining muscle weight. Losing inches is still losing. I was not exercising other than walking so that was for sure not what was going on for me but possibly what is happening for you. I would wait until I went months without losing on the scale or the measuring tape before I threw In the towel.

Hi All, I had surgery 10 months ago and hit my 18 month goal at 6 months. However, since then I fluctuate 2+/- lbs for the last 4 months. I have lost 2 pants sizes, about 6 inches from my waist, and gained about 3 inches on my hips. I can’t get past 140/142 lbs on the scale. I have increased my protein, watched my carb intake, increased my exercise and still haven’t dropped past 140 lbs. has any had this happen? My dietician still hasn’t responded after multiple attempts of outreach.

Hello! I just had VSG surgery on July 11th, so I guess that makes me 7 weeks post-op! I'm currently in the "Mashed Food" phase until September 12th when I can start "Easy to Chew Foods". I like that mashed food is a bit more like real food than liquid or pureed, but it still feels really limiting. I don't mind eating small portions, but everything I eat basically has to be refrigerated and I can't wait to get to a phase, maybe? where I can eat some convenience foods, aka throw something in my purse in case I get hungry or I need to eat and a restaurant doesn't have what I need. Anyway, you can see most of my details in my profile, but I can't fill out some of it, which is weird. I'm not pre-op obviously. Oh I know...I lost 30 lbs prepping for surgery by walking, eating smaller portions and practicing the 30 minute waiting and such, oh and more water and no diet soda. Since my surgery I've lost another 35 in the last 7 weeks, I'd say that's not bad! My most recent bariatric nurse appointment was positive and she said that I'm ahead of the curve. I think I'm losing weight faster because I'm absolutely horrified by vomiting and I may hold back a bit because I don't want to get sick. My local friends that have had WLS said if I've gotten this far without vomit, I've probably done a good job following the rules and its not going to happen to me. I do once in awhile get the pressure in my chest, but then I either don't eat that thing again for a few more weeks or I eat a portion of less than 1/4c. Has anybody come up with any "life saving" types of recipes or convenience foods that they like???

I feel like they tend to drop the ball with the short-term aftercare information. I had no idea about the heartburn meds and never took mine either until my 3-week post-op apt My doctor encouraged me to keep taking them for the same reasons. So glad ur doing good and congrats on your loss! Non-scale victories... I feel like I have so much more energy than before. Any lower back pain I had before is totally gone. No more shin splints or fasciitis pains. I can def. tell my clothing is fitting loser and people are starting to notice the loss. I'm starting to gain my confidence back up as well.

At least you caught the low iron right now before it gets any worse! Way to go on the exercise and the weight loss!

Hi! Congratulations on the weight loss 👍🏻 I had my surgery on 7/28 and had lost 13lbs by 3 weeks then nothing for 10 days. Now at 4 weeks I’m at 18lbs. Every bit of advice I’ve gotten or seen from people ahead of me on this thread or others has helped so much. I don’t weigh myself every day now and I’ve taken the phrase “ be compassionate with myself “ to heart. Just last week I was on here wondering if my surgery was successful and now I’m feeling much better about it. Hang in there, from what I’m reading these stalls happen to all of us.

Questions to Ask Before Surgery?
ShoppGirl replied to SpartanMaker's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Ask if you have any choice in what size your stomach will be post surgery. I am not even sure if that’s a thing they could have done differently but given a choice I would have preferred mine to be smaller. I was able to eat more than expected at every given phase post op. I just measured my food and stopped when my plate was empty and I still lost weight though so don’t let me freak you out. According to my team at over a year out now my normal meals of about one serving of most things are typical but that’s me eating till I’m satisfied. I never really feel full. I see people on here who eat a lot less and if that is something they control I would have preferred to be on the smaller side. -

It takes a while for some of us to see it. In the mirror especially. Even some people lose like 100 pounds and everyone else can of course see lt but they can’t see it themselves. Sometimes planting two photos next to one another helps. You will get there though. Of course it’s not all water weight. You are on the right track. It just takes time. -

what’s been your biggest change? The level of energy I have. It's nuts. I am so motivated to do things now, and that's with me still being 120 lbs heavier than a normal BMI. It's been great, and it has led to other changes like exercising so much more, accomplishing more house goals, and just generally being happier and more stable emotionally (even with all the weight loss-induced hormonal situations). what was the biggest surprise? I thought I would mourn not being able to eat a lot, and I really don't. Sure, sometimes I wish I could just scarf down a big plate of whatever, but then I start eating and I have the amount I can have, and I am ok with it. I thought I would feel deprived and sad but I really do not. biggest challenge? Not comparing myself to others. I'm a year out, and while I am happy with what I have lost, I can't help but compare myself to others who started out with similar stats but have dropped a whole lot more weight. Or even more, people who started out even smaller but lost more weight! It's tough not to compare but I'm constantly working on it... biggest personal victory? This one is tough. I'd say the fact that I now workout 5x a week for 45 minutes and enjoy it? I don't have to talk myself into it as much as I used to, and I feel compelled to do it. -
Oh gosh! I'm so, so glad you're healing and taking it easy. What a scare. And yay for the NSV of walking up the stairs! I'm only 7 days post op and only 4 pounds under my pre-surgery weight (because I had lots of water retention last week), but my victory is getting around easier, and (it might be my imagination) pants a bit less snug. [eta: come to think of it, even though I only lost 4 lbs since surgery, I've lost 19 overall in the past 2.5 weeks, so that's significant enough to feel a difference]

Hi everyone, checking in to see how it’s going! I’m just about 5 weeks out. I lost 27 lbs in the first 3 weeks … and haven’t lost any weight in the 2 weeks since. I wish I had taken Tek’s advice not to weight myself 😩

How much water weight can you lose, though? I read somewhere that you can lose up to 20 pounds of water after changing your diet. I have now lost almost 26 pounds on the scale. Surely, some of that must be fat? I'd be really disappointed if I've gone through all of this just to lose water weight. -
Questions to Ask Before Surgery?
SpartanMaker posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm having my last pre-surgery visit with my bariatric surgery team this week. Because that's how I roll, I have an extensive list questions so far. I'm curious if there are any questions you wish you'd asked your team, but didn't? What surprises did you encounter? What do you wish you'd known ahead of time about the surgical process, your recovery, or your weight loss? Thanks all! -

Hello, I had the sleeve in 2019 - I weighed 255 day of surgery and got down to 195....after several months below 200 lbs I slowly regained until I had got back to my original weight prior to surgery, which was less than two years time. I am scheduled for gastric bypass in late September due to acid reflux, but also to revive my weight loss again. I am over fifty so I realize I will most likely to hit a stall or two....does anyone keep the weight off when they do a revision? Especially if they didnt have a lot to lose (ie less than one hundred pounds)? I am excited but also keeping cautious optimism for a long term success
