  1. Hi all! I was wondering if anybody has interview different surgeons to see which one is the best pick for the surgery? I have three main picks in the Houston area. One surgeon made me wait a hour and he was very cocky! Very bad manners and decided to NEVER go back to that surgeon. The second surgeon, was a complete 360 and love him and the hospital that he works at. The third surgeon was the same at the second one however I notice Cigna does not cover the hospital on where he is going to preform the surgery. So, I had one main decision and went with the middle one because he cover all the requirements that I had and there bariatric program at the hospital is 5 stars! What did y'all look for in the surgeon that you went with?

    Cigna (Recent Apporval)

Please Read page 6 of the Cigna Bariatric Surgery cover document. On that page it explains in detail why the office is making us go through a six month nutritional evaluation by a physician or registered dietitian. I know it is frustrating but we must follow the rules, so Cigna can pay for our surgeries.

    Hijacking a Group Session

Our local meeting is open to anyone researching bariatrics. (referred by the surgeon’s office) We had a gentleman show that monopolized the conversation. The RN who facilitates our local group has no control over who shows up. The RN tried to redirect him several times. He was told him to keep questions brief and give others time to talk. He would not stop. Several people got up and walked out. He still had no clue. Start your question or answer with “I will keep things brief to give others a chance to talk” Hopefully it will give her a hint.

    Bariatric Emergency Kit

What do you consider a (melodramatic) Emergency these days? Late to work? 2lb weight gain? Bad date? Spilled coffee? Sour yogurt? Budget due? Teens? How do you combat it? How do you process your emotions now instead of letting them eat away at you? Or you eating them into submission? What tools & (let's be honest) foods are on your emergency bag to keep you from going into shock?

    June 2019 Surgery Siblings!

I am back from my visit with the surgeon. Everything looks good and he gave me the all CLEAR🤨. I asked about the results of my "abnormal ecg/ekg". I told him that since I had the results (from all the scheduled tests blood, etc), I had been consulting Dr. Google.😲 He told me that since I have diabetes (Type 2 on Metformin), it may eventually lead to heart disease. So that may be the cause of the reading on the ekg/ecg. I had a previous ecg/ekg in August and there were no issues. So there I sat in the chair. It seemed all surreal. I have finally made it to the finish line. After about 8 years of stopping and going, I am there. I am both happy and sad. Only sad because there will be some foods that I will have to definitely give up. But I will be gaining so much more in the end. I recently reviewed by medical summary from 2017 to the present. In June 2017, I weighed 262 and today I weighed 228😮. I was amazed because I did that with a few changes in my eating patterns and I try to get in atleast 4-5 miles of waking each day (if possible). So after surgery, I can hopefully get rid of 80lbs or so. My goal weight is 140 but I will accept anything between 140 -155. I did ask about swapping out some of the protein shakes (during my pre-op diet) for the protein soups that I have seen @ the Bariatric Pal store, My surgeon suggested that I follow their diet strictly by the book at least for the first 6 months then after that I can experiment with whatever I want. So, I am going to listen to my surgeon. Anywhoo, as Trinity said in one of my favorite movies, The Matrix............."I'm IN"
  6. You like buttered bread, well I did too. Baked a lot of bread myself, was good enough I could easily sold it, had I wanted. Even had branchedto artisan breads for more challenge. Then i had bariatric surgery, lost most of my inate desire for bread and rolls . A while back Tomkitten,my son, asked for Ham Salad on toast, and oh it did look and smell lovely! So yours truly decided to cut one up into teen tiny pieces,i had heard if you toasted it , it would not ball up in your new renovated tummy. Oh Sweetheart, within 15 minutes I was in Misery city Hurting, puking, crying my eyes out, that was something I will not do Again! And it was no more than 1/8th sandwich. Have not had anything made with wheat flours again, cake, bread, cookies, pie, it just ain't worth the grief your body will put YOU through. Oh things do change a lot! The good News, after years of trying every diet known to Modern Man and a few I suspect my doctors dreamed up to torture me, I have and still am losing weight. I have lost 150 pounds since my highest weight, oh I WAS a Big Girl, 104 since my surgery nearly 8 1/2 years ago.
  7. Do what’s best for you. No regrets that I did this. I am maintaining five years out in the 130s. I needed a long-term solution. I have lost before but have struggled to keep it off. I am a sleeve and I bounced back from surgery quicly with no complications. My weight loss was fast (not the norm) I'm maintain. I do indulge within reason. If I gain 5 to 10 pounds, I go back to my weight loss mode diet and work it back off. Here is my dietician’s recipe website for food ideas. 8. Hello! My name is Taylor and I am 25 years old. I am 5' 4" and my weight fluctuates around 235-250. I've struggled with my weight since I was a pre-teen despite being active. My mother got gastric bypass (Roux-en-Y) about 10 years ago and has been very successful. I've tried many diets (WW, Profile by Sanford, Whole30, Keto, calorie counting) and nothing ever sticks and I always go back to my range weight of 235-245. I can never lose more than 20 pounds and always end up going back to the weight I've mentioned above. I would love to get this surgery sometime soon, and I am in the process of setting up a consult with a bariatric surgeon. I have a trip to Italy and Ireland for two weeks in September. And then my family and I are spending Christmas in Hawaii (Ive never been). Half of me wants to get the surgery sometime soon, before going to Europe to look and feel better so I can look back on this trip positively. On the other hand, my mom mentioned that I should wait until after Europe so I can enjoy the food (which Italy is known for). I could try to lose some weight before then, but then I dont think I would be eligible for surgery because my BMI would be lower. And I know I will just go back to my weight range eventually and go through the never ending cycle with my weight. Can anyone offer some advice? Any would be much appreciated! Thank you

    ❤ MAY 2019 CHALLENGE❤

Good morning! I hope your month is going well also. My goal is kinda weight related, so not sure if this officially counts, but it’s my goal so I’ll post it. Since surgery back in February I feel like all I’ve done is work, go to Pilates, work, plan my food, work, stress about when the next time I’ll poop is, work, log food, work, make sure my protein and water is on point, work, go to support group, work... My current lifestyle is so dramatically different from my previous one. What I feel has suffered the most is my friendships because every activity done with friends also centered around food. My goal for May/June is to get back out and reconnect with friends and just go do something that won’t derail me. There are a couple local arts festivals coming up and while those used to center around what kind of food/drink I could eat, this time around I just really want to hang with friends and be part of the crowd again. Also I’d love to go to the local AAA ballpark and enjoy a game sans the requisite beer and hot dog. It will be tough because I’ve put myself in this little insulated world for the last 100 days, but it’s time to get out and start becoming part of life outside my bariatric bubble.

  12. So glad things are still doing good for you. I am still having difficulties at 9 months with my RNY, still have 25+ to make it to my personal goal, Nurse Practioner at my Bariatric Clinic stated she would be satisfied with. anything below 200, but I would still like more. Can I do it? Just not sure, Tuesday I was having a Rocky day, called them to check what I needed to do next, they did not believe I was physically ill, told me To book with a mental health professional. I was vomiting, when they called me back I was dry-heaving but that is the response I got. Very bewildering, not sure my next step? Do I Foget about them , book with a local gastroenterologist, see if he can help me? I do not believe I am going wacky-woo,I am doing better today, Maybe I had some sort of temporary bug? Their attitude wounded me greatly! I am not scheduled to see someone in the clinic office before August 14th, N.P. I normally see he's vacation coming up. Unless things change with me, I will have another endoscopy June to Early July, I do feel abandoned at this point, I did trust these people and doubtful if I do anymore. If I sound depressed or something to them, I am sorry , but this has been such a LONG siege and I doubt mental health is the final answer for me.

    Regrets, regrets, regrets

I'm reading everyone's food enjoyment, even the Jimmy John's unwich that sounds amazing, but I am the 1% who can't eat anything. I'm 5 months post-op and to date I'm down 97lbs. I don't exercise because I'm a full time working corporate mom who is also in college full time. I don't know if this is the right place to post, but I had a break down 2 nights ago. I've been faking that I'm happy to hubby, and became a girly girl with new clothes and makeup to try and make me happy. I only threw up once early post-op. I literally cannot eat any real food. My stomach doesn't tolerate anything. I have to eat mild and bland food if I want solids. Liquid has become my life, and I swore I would never have to live off of protein shakes, but it's all I can tolerate. There's a handful of real food, but it has to be fresh. No sauce from a store bottle/restaurant like BBQ, spaghetti sauce, and anything Asian. I get really ill. I tolerate Hershey's chocolate tho, to a degree. But a *bite* of my kids pizza has me sick. And when I get really hungry it physically hurts in my stomach and back. I'm so miserable and regret the bypass. I can't see my bariatric doctor because they are only open when I work. If this is my life now...... I can't. I'm so tired of the "but Sis, it was worth it, right?" F that. I crave everything even more probably because I can't have it. I keep trying. It fails. Hubby is very frustrated and hates every night when discussing dinner plans I tell him to pretend I'm not here. He feels guilty, like he's not being considerate. Oh and alcohol... Any more than 6oz of wine causes me to black out and not remember anything just as if I was plastered. It wasn't supposed to be this way. I'm not sure of the purpose of this post. I just need someone to talk to that is relatable. Sent from my SM-N960U using BariatricPal mobile app

    ❤ MAY 2019 CHALLENGE❤

Love love love Slumgullion, now there is a Dish from baby-Frustr8hood! Mouth-watering now and few food- thoughts do that any more. Spent yesterday feeling super nausea- sick, called my clinic only to reach a nurse who told me to seek advice from a Bariatric social worker. I have not gone wacky-woo, I am physically ill and I only called you for medical help. Considering calling my PCP office, asking if I need a referral or if I can call the new gastroenterologist directly. No matter what that nurse says, I am NOT doing well, or at least I wasn't yesterday. Went and sat in the backyard in the fresh air, figured if I vomited back there I would not have carpeting to clean.

    Nausea and vomiting

And I just posted to Sheribear how miserable I have been all day, upchucking and dry heaves, and the durn nurse who returned my call, told me To go talk to a Bariatric Social Worker, I ha ave not gone wacky - woo, today I am physically ill! 8 months of trying to be a Good rule-following Elf and this the response I get? Just ate or rather drank the broth off of WonTon soup, by now not over-enamoured of chicken-based broth but lightest thing I could think of. Will it remain in me? Guess I'll wait and see, usually within 15, 30 minutes tops, it re- emerges, only slightly worse for wear. At this point, I would actually relish an IV instead of something P.O, Maybe after I get some rest I will feel better tomorrow.

    Abnormal EKG

Thanks Sheribear68 for your post; you have perfect timing for me. I believe when they get a moment to think about it, I suspect I will have a duplicate diagnosis. Woke up this Tuesday feeling nauseous, thought maybe I was too long since last meal so ate small or at least tried to eat small amount of no sugar added cereal and skim milk. Of course it didn't have good results, called my Bariatric Clinic at Ohio State, it's on a file-card thingie they gave me way back when , they wanted to know if you were having nausea/emesis all day. So I called, was reminded this in Well-Patient Clinic day but they would have a nurse return my call. When she did, she refused my list of symptoms, and told me I should speak to a console for bariatric social worker, hey if I show any signs similar to depression , it's because I am physicall I'll not maladjusted. I was dry-heaving when she called me, not putting on an act. Well well, I guess in the morning I should call my PCP, ask if I need a referall to see our new gastroenterologist or whether I can direct-call him. Obviously that durn nurse thinks I have gone wacky-woo or something. And I am inching closer and closer to 200, only 14 pounds from there last Friday, she actually told me Pounds don't Matter, Whaaat? Then why did I have surgery but to decrease my excess poundage? My abdominal skin wasn't enough of a wreck that I needed 6 addiitional scars showing?, nobody looks in my navel but I have one there too. Now there, like the tops of my thighs , look like wrinkled silk. That's what fabric they resemble, I rather expected hanging panni, but this wrinkled? Nope that was a surprise.
