    June Surgeries

Congrats on the 30lb loss!!! I also had VSG on the 30th and am only down appx. 15lbs.. I had a 12 day stall that started in week 2. It's frustrating but it is what it is...lol...But I'm just focusing on staying on the plan and letting the process work itself out. As long as the trajectory is downward, I'm happy [emoji4] Good luck on your journey! Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app

    June Surgeries

1st of all cograts on the loss so far. 30 pounds that quick is pretty remarkable. I am 6 weeks out and I am only down a little over 30 since surgery. What was your suegery weight. 2nd I had this conversation with my doc Tuesday. Her advice was focus on non scale victories and that everyone will have stalls. She advised me not to weigh everyday or I would not focus on my weight loss with the correct mindframe.
  3. I think you’ll find many on here who consciously stopped trying to lose weight before their initial/original goal weight. I’m 5’2” and had set a goal of 120. By the time 140-150 came around I was getting some “concerned” comments, but I personally wasn’t satisfied yet. When I hit 127, i decided to stop as *I* felt I was looking too skeletor-ish. Fast forward 2 years from that and I ended up losing a bit more anyway. Today I am 115, but I think I actually look less skeletor-ish than i did at 127 immediately after weight loss phase (the fam agrees). I think it’s because weight may have shifted around a tad, and because carbs are a part of my regular diet. 🤷🏻‍♀️
  4. Hello! I am looking to introduce myself and possibly get some advice or insight from others! I had a VSG in October of 2016. Weight DOS was 288, lowest weight I reached was 198 within about 6 months of the procedure. I developed terrible reflux that I managed with OTC medications, and maintained this weight loss almost effortlessly (I did go to the gym 4-5x weekly and ate small portions - stuck to the rules as best as I could) until the end of 2019. But to backtrack a little - I was diagnosed with breast cancer in May of 2018, so by the time I was through with chemo, steroids, horrible lethargy...you get the picture... the weight piled back on within a year of finishing treatment, and by the end of 2019, I had gained 60lbs back. I am in no way trying to play the "cancer card" or blame it on that, I know I am fully responsible for the way my weight journey has turned out, but if I had to pinpoint when it started to go downhill, I'm pretty sure it aligned with that. Presently, I am at 261 and am seeking a revision due to the reflux, a severely dilated fundus that was seen on both a CT and an endoscopy, and the weight regain. I guess I am just looking for others who are also seeking a revision, or others who have recently had one who may have any words of wisdom! Lastly, I have Harvard Pilgrim and my authorization has been submitted by my surgeon and is now in the "pending medical review" stage. Anyone else with HP, roughly how long did it take to hear back? My program coordinator said anywhere from 1 to 2 weeks, but I was just wondering if anyone had any personal experience. Thank you for reading and I'm looking forward to "meeting" more people on here!

    July Surgeries??

Hi! I had surgery on the 13th and a few days ago I made a post called "I hate the scale" lol. I have sort of been all over the place, too. Actually in the past few days since I upped my calories, I am having a more consistent downward weight trend. I think mine was a mixture of body fluids and constipation for the first 10 days after surgery. Today I had my two week appointment and I was down a total of 9 lbs, which doesn't seem like a lot especially compared to those people who lose like 22 or 25 lb in 2 weeks, but I'm following the plan, so there's not much else I can do. I was happy to find out that that loss finally put me under a 35 BMI, so little losses are adding up. I know that people usually talk about the three-week stall on here, but the second week was really chaotic for me weight-wise. Hopefully we will both be slow but steady to meet our goals. Ps I just realized this is the bypass forum, and I had sleeve, but I don't think it makes that much difference in the first few weeks.

Thank you all so much ! I appreciate your words. And I’m proud of your accomplishments as well on this weight loss journey. It’s not easy but definitely possible. You guys are right I will keep going and will be proud of what I have lost so far. Xoxo 😘
  9. I have wide feet, unfortunately no matter what I weigh, and I had a pair of Danskos I loved before I had my son. Unfortunately, my feet gained so much weight I couldn't wear them and have them to my bff. Now I wonder if they would fit again! That's interesting that yours don't feel as good now. I wonder if you needed more support before your weight loss and maybe that's why. [emoji848] Maybe it's too much now and you need more cushion. Interesting! anyone over 60?

Hi Elizabeth! I was sleeved a year ago at 67 and feel better than I have in many years. I had a smooth recovery and continual weight loss, although very slow at this point. Slow and steady wins the race (well, not in the Olympics). Good luck, and ask any questions!
  11. Can you share with me what your experience going from Sleeve to RNY has been like? I am trying the medical managed weight loss option right now but so far it’s not helping with the reflux. What are the biggest differences to you between the two procedures and how they affect your daily life? Thanks for sharing.
  12. I disagree on losing less weight 2nd time around. It may be harder but if you follow the rules you will lose the weight. Example I weighed 296 day of surgery VSG I lost 14 lbs first month. I weighed 180 day of surgery RNY I lost 12 lbs first month !!!!! There is 116 lbs difference in starting weight for those 2 surgeries and yet 2 lb difference in weight loss.
  13. I've heard a few people who had the sleeve saying that they stopped losing weight early on. Sorry that you're going through that! I've had pretty slow weight loss myself when I compare myself to others due to my hypothyroidism and not being able to really exercise due to my back injuries and arthritis, but I was still recently able to get to my goal weight even after multiple really long stalls throughout my journey including the most recent one being 47 days long. If you look into revision, other than gastric bypass, you could also see if your insurance will cover the duodenal switch or loop duodenal switch surgery and if you can find a surgeon who will perform it. The sleeve is literally the first part of the surgery, they just add the intestinal bypass portion and you statistically lose the most weight with the DS. So it's an option to look into. I hope you can either find something that will work to pick your weight loss back up or a revision that'll work for you. I'm so sorry you're struggling and I hope that things work out for you.

    Scared to death!

I was incredibly hungry during all of weight loss phase. It was too early for what you ate, and that's concerning....because endangering yourself this early on is bad news for being able to make health protecting choices in the future. While probably not world ending (honestly cheese and refried beans were on my soft foods list)....it makes me think you need more support than you're getting. I know some people experience a tremendous decrease of appetite. I was not one of them. I was every bit as hungry as I'd ever been and more so.....so I totally feel your pain. Please be concious that you need to follow your instructions carefully so you don't injure yourself. Causing a leak in your stomach suture line will result in a hell of a long hospitalization, and VERY serious potential problems. You don't want to go there. You don't want to risk the smallest chance of it. It's that bad. I wouldn't be me...without plugging the bariatric therapist...so I'm gonna say you should see if your clinic will give you a referal. Lots of folks are resistant to this, but it's just not a bad idea. What could it hurt to give it a try?
  15. Hey all, I was sleeved a little over a year ago. alittle about me, surgery day I weighed in at 386. I’m 6’3” and prior to the sleeve I was in the gym 5 days a week most weeks. I’ve been the same weight since 5 months post op, currently weighed in at 315.No matter what I do, more intense workout, sleeve reset, eating more protein, more water, more greens. ( all those were doctor suggestions). Nothing seems to work, kinda like before I even had surgery. Even got to the point where both the surgeons nurse practitioner has said quote “ I don’t have any answers for you”. The surgeon suggest the sleeve reset because he said I had to be over eating. Which I don’t. I eat like a bird most days i got a second opinion 2 months ago and she put me on a 1600 calorie diet, she thought I was under eating and I struggle to eat 1600 calories. my worst fear was when getting the surgery was it wouldn’t be effective and I understand that I’ve lost like 70lbs. That’s all fine and grand I feel better but I’m only 10 lbs from my lowest weight I achieved on my own and that is extremely disappointing to me. I was told by the surgeon prior to surgery that the weight would melt because I was already active quite a bit. I’ve contemplated getting it revised to the bypass but with the slim success of the sleeve I’m quite reluctant to go get another procedure. im really getting to the point of not caring anymore. The doctors all say my labs are good, no thyroid problems or anything like that. im at a loss, this was supposed to be a nice tool to use to change my life and it just seems like it broke early. thanks for reading and letting me vent Matt

I would definitely make sure your hematologist becomes a part of your surgical team to ensure your safety and prevent clotting issues. He can provide guidance to you and your WLD team. My husband has Factor 5 Leiden which was diagnosed after he developed extensive bilateral pulmonary emboli (blood clots in his lungs), found he had bilateral clots in both legs (no symptoms at all) while in hospital recovering from a heart attack. I insisted on a hematology consult because he was receiving heparin shots twice daily and was on daily aspirin and Brilinta (given after cardiac stent placement to keep platelets from clogging the new stent causing another heart attack) and should not have been making clots! Hematologist did the necessary tests and found the factor 5 Leiden. It’s an inherited disorder so now his mom’s death made more sense…she died due to extensive bilateral pulmonary emboli. We had our son tested and he has it as well. So far, he’s had no clotting issues we know of. However, he definitely needs to lose weight and will need weight loss surgery, I’m sure. I’m concerned about how he will do as well. My husband takes Eliquis twice daily and does quite well. He does not do well with heparin…drops his platelet count AND still developed DVT/blood clot in his leg! After my DS I received heparin injections twice daily but was discharged home on low dose Eliquis twice daily for two weeks. Sorry for the long post! Best wishes to you!
  17. After having a lap band for 13 years with not so great success, roller coaster weight loss, and the inability to eat certain foods at all, I am having it removed in the future and wanted some I put as to getting the gastric sleeve while they take it out. Anyone else switch and have any insight or advice as to good move or not? I’m 68 and in relatively good health.
  18. Wow I got my lap band in 2008 also. Just starting the revision process. Am prepared to self pay but hoping my insurance will cover surgery. My weight loss center staff is very good with working with insurance companies. Keeping my fingers crossed and doing a lot of praying.

    At My WHITS END

Sorry you’re having a rough time. Have you talked with your surgeon and nutritionist? If not you for sure should! I lost hair too, but now at nearly 2 years out it has grown back. If you need to use protein shakes to get to your daily protein goals you should. I actually still have one every morning for breakfast.
  20. At my whits end!! Gastric sleeve done back in January and STILL having a difficult time of it. Hair loss is still happening.. anyone know what to do about this? I am not getting much protein in at all due to extreme nausea, vomiting and pain when eating.

I'd lost way less than 116 lbs at eight months out, so you're much further ahead than I was at that point. My stalls became more frequent and lasted longer the further out I went - and my weight loss slowed to a crawl. But I kept at it regardless, and I ended up losing all of my excess weight, over 200 lbs. It took 20 months in total. in short, don't give up yet!

    Driver's License

I lost about 80 lbs about 10 years ago and when I came back from Colombia, my passport picture showed me as much heavier, and the guy asked me if I had another photo ID. I showed him my driver's license, which showed me as just as heavy, but he just said, "congratulations on the weight loss" and let me in. I have a new passport, which shows me as heavier again (I gained back the 80 lbs, then lost 100, and gained that back, which is why I'm going for surgery). This passport is good until 2029. Hopefully the next one I'll be thinner!

Do you have any non number victories? e.g can walk around places no longer getting winded, able to sit in a chair you werent able to before? you need to focus on those just as much if not more than the actual numbers. im only a month post op, for the first 3 weeks i lost nothing and then the 4th week i lost 6pounds, weight loss is not linear, keep doing what you are doing and sooner or later you will start losing weight again. in saying that congratz on losing 116! that is amazing in just 8 months!!!
  24. Good luck with your 3rd consult. There are FB forums for plastic surgery and you can post to see who went where and if they had a good outcome. That usually helps me make a decision or go to get another consult. Make sure whoever you pick has experience with weight loss patients AND is board certified.
  25. I had mine removed 2 months ago (just over 2yrs post surgery). It was my first ever attack. That pain is horrendous & I was soooo pleased the pain eased in 45 minutes. So sorry yours persisted. I actually lost 2 lbs after surgery (once I git rid of all the fluids they pumped me with) & I’m in maintenance. I lost some of my appetite (came back though ☹️) for that first month so I wouldn’t worry too much about not losing yet. Plus exercise accounts for less than 20% of the weight you have to lose so not being as active likely won’t have a great deal of impact on your weight loss in a month. You can always reduce your calories a little if you’re worried though. And any fitness you may lose will come back quickly too. Sorry about your holiday but better to have your gall removed then experience another painful attack. Hope your recovery goes well.
