    As the stomach growls.....

I was banded on May 15th and had my first fill last Thursday. Most of the time I've been making healthy choices and good portion sizes.... I've had a few slip ups but I haven't worried about that. I feel some restriction if I eat a large meal, but that is more than anyone should be eating to lose weight. Still, as I said, I've been doing really well at Portion Control and not struggling too hard with it because it's mind over matter... I really want to lose weight! But today.... I don't know what came over me today but I've been starving. Painful stomach growling! Really hungry, not just hungry in my head. When I got home from work it was all I could do to keep from grabbing something, anything, FAST just to kill the hunger pains while I took care of the birds, fed the cats, and did a little workout on the Wii before I could finally stop and get dinner heated up. I managed to hold off, even though it left me standing at the microwave watching the seconds tick down until my leftover pork loin roast and broccoli were ready. I had a little chat with myself, reminded myself that the scale won't care or make allowances for the fact that I was really starving if I ate more than I should! Then, when at last I sat down to dinner, the urge to shovel the food in my mouth, because ya know, I'm starving. But the lessons learned here and through my doctor, and the limited restriction I've had at times, came through.... I made myself chew each bite slowly and carefully, and pause between bites. It was torture. I finished eating 20 minutes ago and my stomach is still growling. I think it's rebelling!! Every day we make choices.... this day's been harder for me than most, and I really needed to vent.... but also to share... we can do it, if we want it!

    Hi Everyone!

Banded 6/13 in chattanooga TN. Went back to work monday the 16th was moving a little slow but am doing fine now. Going monday 23rd for 1 week folow-up will find out how much weight lost then.
  4. I agree with Bufflehead. I'm 6 years out and I basically eat portions that are considered normal. (Not normal by typical US standards, but normal by nutritional standards). My portions are slightly smaller than my "normal size" friends, due to my restriction, but what I lack in volume I make up in frequency, so at the end of the day I probably take in the same amount. More dramatic than my portion sizes has been the types of food I eat. WAY less non-nutritive carb heavy "wasted calories", and WAY more healthy foods that contain the nutrients my body needs, not the junk my head may want. Yes, I do sometimes indulge in what I consider my "emotional foods", but never to an extent that compromises my health or weight maintenance. You will likely experience a period of severe restriction immediately postop. The portions you eat will be scary small and your parents may freak out. But you will progress past this to a point of being able to eat more than enough to nourish your body. (If you make healthy choices)

    Band Jargon...teach me!

Basically these group names are for the month you get banded. Since I'm getting banded in February there is a group (go to home, and towards the very bottom it has like support groups with month and year).. Whichever month you get banded you go to that month group and everybody gives suggestions for a name for that group and then you vote on the name. I voted for Fab-U-Less Febs, but that name didn't get picked.. urrggg, oh well.. anyway.. it's usually a name that is sort of uplifting and tied in with your month and losing weight.. that group of people sort of becomes like a family to you or a big support group. Now, there are folks who don't join their "banded month" group and that's fine too. We all support each other (mostly).
  6. Okay. I'm reading through this site as much as I can every day. (I'm way pre-op--first appt in mid-Aug.) A couple of things have started bugging me, so I thought I'd ask the experts (namely, all of you!). 1. I see the there is a WIDE variance in what surgeons and insurance companies ask you to do pre-op. Which tests, what diet, how long, etc. So here's my question: is it possible to lose so much weight running through the pre-op hoops that the insurance company, which initially looked hopeful, now says, "Whoa, we think you can lose and maintain the your weight yourself?" I mean, is this pre-op diet ever a real hurdle to surgery down the pike? 2. What if you don't have the "standard" morbidities? Like, suppose someone had a life-threatening anaphylactic allergy to dust mites that is compounded by heavy weight? Or, suppose someone has had brain surgery for an aneurysm and was told that high blood pressure doesn't help in the possible recurrence of another aneurysm? I'm just sayin'..... What if it's other stuff? Does this, so to speak, weigh in with the insurance companies? 3. One of the things that really strikes me in this is that a) we're all pretty much powerless over food; we (at least I) hate being powerless; c) we decide on surgery (which is, like, a totally pro-active, life-affirming thing to do), and then, boom! d) the insurance company makes us, well, powerless again. Is anybody else really, really ticked off about this? I should add that I haven't actually experienced any of the above--okay, I've experienced #2. But I'm asking because I am trying to get a healthy mindset for my appointment in August. I really want this whole process to be one of dialogue and decision--not too much edict. Are people--surgeons and insurance--generally willing to work with you? I'd really appreciate your thoughts and insight on these. Thanks in advance. DeterminedGirl
  7. October 2nd......3 months since I hand my sleeve done. I do believe I am a poster child for this procedure, as I have yet to be in pain or puke one time since my procedure. I am utilizing my new stomach as a great tool to lose weight - and I believe I have been successful - I am over halfway to my goal. In fact, I am almost "worried" my goal is not low enough. I have caught flack on here for some of my meal choices - Oh No!! A Crispy taco!!! - but I am very proud of both the choices and portions I am eating. I was 307 at my heaviest, and 292 day of surgery. I was wearing a 3x top and tight sze 24 pants. Today I am rocking and XL top and 16 bottoms. It is working for me. I still struggle to get my liquids in.....40oz is about average, and I KNOW I need more than that. I need to quit putting off dealing with my knee so I can start exercising....I haven't done any yet. To anyone considering this surgery - research and research. Talk to those that have had it. Bad things CAN happen, however....Great things can happen too!! I will try and update soem recent pics soon.....

    2nd Meeting...

I went to my second meeting it was all about label reading and watching what you buy. I rarely look at these things, I mean I know what to look for and what not to buy but I never really cared. I do realize that by reading the labels I will have a better chance of really losing the weight and keeping it off. I know that I have to change the way I think about food and how I eat it before this surgery!!! Just so I don't have a nervous break down when I can't eat all of those yummy things anymore!!! Lost 2 more pounds since last week!!! I am finally on my way!!!

    Wow...wow.....wow

hey de well, only 2 weeks post op, i dont (feel anything different). i know that the plication is when they turn the stomach inside itself w/o surgery or cutting very much like the sleeve. look at this link http://www.nwwls.com/banded-gastric-plication i am excited. although its in early trials, the news that i have researched and from talking to my surgeon is that it is doing well w/weight loss and helping it.

    I need some help, guys...

I never slack off on the exercising, thats the thing I find makes the most difference for me. Lots of cardio because nothing burns calories like running does and over the last 2 years I've also done lots of circuit training. That allows me lots of scope. My only other "rule" is 3 meals a day, nothing more. I dont always stick to that perfectly, but its snacking that does me in. I eat whatever I want, but I only eat 3 meals and my weight never budges an ounce. Its not uncommon to gain weight early in a relationship, because you tend to do a lot more things like eating out, having romantic dinners, afternoon teas etc etc. Just cut them out again, lol.

    Venting

It sounds like he was proud and very happy for you! A lot of men don't understand how women feel about weight. I would say that if you didn't clearly tell him what not to share you should just let it go. To avoid it in the future explain to him what is acceptable to make public and what you'd like to remain private. Then celebrate! :-)

    Totally discouraged

3 meals per day! I have it in writing that is why I am feeling so discourage don't get me wrong I have lost weight but I have been eating more than 2 oz. I don't know if they made a mistake but that is what it says... Will call my surgeon tomorrow! <br /><br /><br />

    Just getting started

Welcome Jim! Did your Nutritionist give you some kind of weight loss plan? As long as you take this seriously and stay on course, along with working out you will lose the weight. Don't forget plenty of Water, and get your sleep too.
  15. There is no way I could possibly even begin to explain how important protein is in your body. Protein is used In every cell in your body. You need protein for protein synthesis and DNA replication. The body's primary building block for muscle, bone, skin, hair, and many other tissues is protein. There are over 10,000 different proteins that are found and needed in the body for maintaining life. After water has been excluded 75 percent of your body weight consists of protein. Crazy huh?! Proteins play many important roles in the body including the structure of enzymes; these are important proteins that help reactions occur in the body, such as releasing from the food we eat. Proteins also function as transport proteins such as hemoglobin; an iron containing protein that transports oxygen to exercising muscles via the bloodstream. Protein consist of amino acids. Amino acids are extremely important . There are twenty different amino acids of which eight are considered essential because they cannot be generated by the body but are necessary for survival. The body uses amino acids circulating in the blood stream, released from the breakdown of tissues, or consumed in the diet to make protein. It's incredible just how important protein is in our bodies not just for building muscle. Eat/ drink your protein whatever just get some I've been studying protien in college for years. Every one of my mastering courses that involves the human body has a section on the importance of protien. Ok, that's enough class for today!!! Class dismissed!
  16. I am 2 weeks out today! I was 281 at my preop testing which was about 2.5 weeks before surgery, I'm 261 today. I lost around 13 lbs the first week after surgery, however the scale has not moved, well it went up a couple pounds, since Monday! Is it really possible to start as stall at 10 days post op? Am I doomed, it's not like anything else I've ever done has worked, maybe this just won't either!? I'm only 5 feet tall so for my weight I really would have thought I'd get a little more out of this than 13 lbs.
  17. Take a deep breath. You are not even close to done losing. Believe it or not you are really not in control of how fast or how slow you will lose the weight that it probably took years to put on. Your body has been through a lot of trauma in the last several weeks and it requires time to regroup and move forward. Weight fluctuates from day to day and week to week. It will come off if you follow the food plan. I promise! Take it from someone who has weathered many stalls, if your weight fluctuations bring you down, you will need to stay off the scale. I am a daily weigher but I have had to learn to only use that number as a barometer to help me stay on track. I also use the way I feel, the way my clothes fit and a tape measure. Also I would not even consider no weight loss a stall until I have not lost anything in 2 weeks. If you want more info about stalls, use the search tool and you will find many posts on the subject. For now, you are doing great! Give yourself and your body a break. You need time to heal both mind and body. Good luck to you!

    Dealing with excess skin

Just turned 23 and that is a huge concern for me as well. I'm single and I fear dating after wls. Our generation is completely into physical image. I hope I "snap back" well after surgery. I've already made up my mind to get a breast lift after reaching my goal weight. ???? Breast lift is def one thing I want to do.
  19. Two weeks ago I took my grandkids to the beach for the day. This meant I went to the gym at 6 as usual, then into work until 10, then I picked up the kids and took them to the beach. I walked up and down the beach twice, played in the tide pools, had lunch and then back down the beach, and finally home. Somewhere during this process I was sitting in the sun, relaxing for a minute and started to reflect on my life today vs. 6 years ago before I was banded. Just 6 years ago I would have either gone to work or gone with the kids somewhere- not enough energy for both. Four years ago I would have gone to the gym in the morning and probably just taken the kids to the beach. Two years ago I would have gone to the gym, come into work for a bit and taken the kids to the beach. I would have never made it up and down the beach twice. I would have been exhausted by the time we had returned once from the tide pools. This time, approaching my 6th year with a lap band and at 61 years old, I went to the gym, then worked for 2 hours, then took the kids to the beach and walked back and forth on the beach, in out of the surf and the tide pools, up to the restaurant and back, and still had energy to spare. Life is a miracle, my grandkids are blessings, and every day I am grateful for my lap band. If you ‘re early in your journey ,take a moment to think about where you would like to be a year from now. Those who have been on this journey for a while ,take a moment and reflect on what something you are doing today would have been like before you were banded. Let’s share. You can read about this day and my past 6 years banded at Sandi's Banded Living — My Lapband Weight Loss Success Story Please let me know if you find it useful.
  20. I was curious to see examples of peoples diets and exercise programs that have had fast weight loss on lapband(70 or more pounds in the first year).

    Owww... to much?

Do it again tomorrow. And again the day after. And the day after that. No way 20 minutes walking is going to do you any harm. By the end of the week you'll actually be enjoying it and looking forward to your workouts. Remember, nothing comes easy. No pain, no gain.

    A Magic Bullet

For many years prior to my Weight Loss Surgery, I was waiting for a magic bullet [no, not the blender] to come along and make it very easy for me to lose my excess weight. Some new drug or Vitamin that made the process very easy. Many weight loss drugs were introduced through the years but many had adverse side-effects, some were outright dangerous. Well, a new device called AspireAssist was just approved by the FDA. The device works by restricting caloric absorption and decreasing the rate of eating/chewing. Under conscious sedation and with the use of an endoscope, a tube is placed within the upper portion of the stomach, with the other end attached to the surface of the abdomen through a secured port. The device is then attached to the port when the patient is ready to aspirate, 20-30 minutes after a meal. Approximately 30 percent of the caloric intake from the meal can be emptied directly into the toilet, requiring about 10-15 minutes in all for the aspiration process. http://acsh.org/news/2016/07/14/fda-approves-new-way-to-purge-calories/ [i remember reading stories that the Romans used binge and purge cycles in the process of overeating. When they were full they would go and vomit out their stomach content so they could continue eating. Apparently some of those stories were false but the myth remains. http://history.howstuffworks.com/history-vs-myth/did-romans-purge-bellies-in-vomitoriums.htm] The device, called AspireAssist, is marketed for obese patients with a BMI between 35-55 who have been unable to lose, or maintain loss of weight, using non-surgical methods. Though it has been available to the European Union population since 2012, it recently gained FDA approval in the United States. Results of a one-year U.S. clinical trial showed that participants (n=171) who used the device, in addition to counseling, lost 12 percent of their initial weight on average, when compared to a 4 percent weight loss in those in the counseling only arm of the study. Well, I am glad I didn't wait around for this one.

    Gym

I started training pre-op to help with the weight loss and to get into a healthier lifestyle. Post-op, my surgeon cleared me for cardio about two weeks after surgery, then cleared me for strength training after a month. I took it very slow to compensate for the decreased calories and surgical recovery. Best of luck on your journey.

    July 30th sleeve!

I am 9 days out... I am glad I did it... but no one told me of the weight stalls. Just be prepared for anything. Things that changed this past week.... 1. SMELLS are exaggerated and some are deceiving. Have a hanky ready if you are in a public place to breathe through. I sat next to a guy eating beef Jerky on the airplane on the way back from hospital. I thought the jerky smelled like road kill. and the stewardess had some awful perfume... the combo was not pleasant! 2. those first days of drinking... a sip means a teaspoon...not a tablespoon... else OUCH 3. prepare for nap time for at least the first 10 days (cause that is where I am at) 4. make sure you have Gas X strips! I took some on the way home from hospital... boy do they help with the gas pains. 5. try to find a couple clear Protein drinks... I like unjury chicken broth... but it is getting old. and Isopure (rightfully nicknamed isopuke) 6. Have some adult liquid Tylenol for when you get home, OR have a way to crush some pain pills. 7. your gauze when you get home... get the kind that doesn't stick to wounds.... learned that the hard way! 8. stock up with your Clear liquids and have a variety. (fruity G2 and Jello... gets old too. ) and get rest! Good luck with your surgery!

    You Go Girl

 I finally did it, I made the call after searching and reading up on surgerys :sick i did it , I went to my Oreintation last week at the hospital, and found it quite interesting, I was full of questions and had my application ready for her, how ever i had to do a insurance verification call which pesimist i am was surprised I am covered, and do not need a wait list for weight loss, just the nessary requirements of body mass and so on, which i qualify. I am only 5'2" and weighing in at a hefty 213 when i went to oreintation, after listening to them saying i would have to loose some weight i have already lost 2 lbs:clap2: . I emailed the nurse and insurance rep. at the hosp. and have talked to my doc which again i though i would have problems but he was all for it says it should help with diabetic problems and with the pain in leggs, and cholesterol. so I emailed again and told the np that and am waiting for a apt for doc and food doc, and with the phys, still have two more seminars as well. This is not going to be easy, reading and hearing the problems im not so sure will come back when i hear from the hospital for apt with docs. :cry :violin:  for me
