10 weeks and I'm still struggling with appetite
Arabesque replied to mamoosbabes's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
The temporary change to your taste buds & for some more sensitive sense of smell can make finding something you can tolerate eating difficult. I remember being excited about being able to eat vegetables again in soft food but my favourites were awful. Took me a few tries to work out which ones I could eat. At 10 weeks I would expect you are on solid foods. I focussed on ensuring I was eating all my protein first at each meal & only a small amount of vegetable if I was able & usually only for dinner. I very happily never had another protein shake once I was on purée - they were disgusting. And like @catwoman7 I didn’t have to continue with them either. I supplemented my protein intake with a high protein yoghurt & yoghurt drink. Water can almost be too heavy too drink at first. Don’t be afraid to try other liquids & not just plain water. I’d have a large mug of green tea, a yoghurt drink & flattened sparkling water (left the bottle open - I seemed to tolerate the mineral taste better) as well as plain water. Some find warm drinks easier to drink than cold too. Hunger & appetite do return. When is individual but between 6-12 months is pretty common. I found it a helpful time to change my relationship with food. I started to eat to a routine because I knew I needed to eat to get in the nutrients my body needed to function not because I wanted to eat or wanted to eat a particular food, taste or texture (head hunger). -
I'm only in week 6 post-op and had a very hard time getting in all my fluids for WEEKS after surgery. The protein was difficult, too. Felt like I was CONSTANTLY drinking or eating and everything gave me nausea. In all of my Googling, I read that dehydration can absolutely bring weight loss to a halt as well as not getting sufficient protein. When I was finally able to meet my daily goals of both last week, the pounds started falling off, one to two pounds a DAY. I know that is crazy and it won't last too much longer, but I was grateful for the breakthrough. Also, any diet less than 1,200 calories will negatively impact your metabolism in the long run and really slow weight loss or bring it to a stop. So, if you're further down the road post-op and eating regular foods, check your calorie intake. All of this advice is armchair dietitian advice sourced from Dr. Google. Lol I just thought they were interesting finds.

Really?!!! The whole point of this forum is to get advice and opinions from people have been down this road before. I don’t call my doc for every little thing they have far more important things to worry about than if I’ve lost a pound or two this week. Why be so snarky?

Is this a stall?
The Greater Fool replied to Dan1131's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Really, why would you trust your Doc? Am I right? I'm willing to say it is a stall, but I'm not a Doctor, but as a stranger on the internet my opinion obviously carries more weight. Is it not so? Good luck, Tek -
Thx everyone. I’ll just keep doing what I am doing and hope the weight loss will kick in again in a week or two

10 weeks and I'm still struggling with appetite
mamoosbabes posted a topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
How many struggle with eating after gastric bypass surgery? I've followed all the instructions (ie chewing well, waiting between bites, etc), but can't hardly stand the taste of most foods I eat. I've particularly had problems with protein shakes, protein water and protein powders. Some days I feel like I don't even want to eat. I'm concerned because I never reach the amount of protein and water recommended. Will this ever end? Good news is I've lost 48 lbs since November 23, 2022. Sent from my SM-A205U1 using BariatricPal mobile app -
A little input as I am a bariatric patient and a personal trainer. If you are new to weight lifting you have more capacity to gain lean mass at first. Women are still not going to get huge muscles because we do not have enough testosterone. The women that you see with huge big muscle have been lifting really heavy for many years and are probably taking some 'supplementation' to assist. Lifting weights increases your metabolic rate for up to 48 hours after a session. In addition to the test issue most of use cannot eat enough calories to get into a surplus to gain lost of muscle. It you have stopped losing weight on the scale you might start checking other ways like using a tape measure or how are your pants fitting. If you are sore after a workout your body uses water to help heal those muscles . I can be up 3 lbs. after a good leg workout but I know it isn't fat, it's just a muscle pump.

Yeah, they told me 15 minutes in the beginning and then just the other day during my 6 week post op appointment they said 10 minutes between each. It’s so exhausting.

Hi all, I’m 6 weeks post op from my VGS. I take 9 pills in the morning and 7 at night, plus vitamin chewables and calcium chews. Taking meds takes me FOREVER every day with taking one pill at a time and then the 10 min wait in between each one. By the time I finish my morning meds it’s lunch time and half my day is gone. Will I ever be able to take all my meds at once again? This is killing me!

Thanks for the reply STL. When I posted, I was 3 1/2 weeks out, now I'm 6 weeks out and I can definitely see things from your perspective. I was definitely overly sensitive on the night it happened, but after reading more and more about the future after surgery, I realize that myself and those around me are coming from a position of love and caring. The more I read, the more I'm starting to actually fear what happens after the "honeymoon" phase is over. When you've spent your entire life craving food all the time and you no longer do, it's amazing to not be constantly hungry...and it's hard to imagine that this feeling won't last. But then when you start reading and understanding things more clearly about the post-op journey, you realize that it's all about learning to control what and how much you eat from here on out....or things will spiral out of control. Thanks for responding. -
Is this a stall?
Jeanniebug replied to Dan1131's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
My "3-week stall" started at week 2 and lasted a month. Just keep doing what you're doing and trust the process. This is the first of MANY stalls that you will have. If the scale drives you crazy, you're on it too much. -
The gas was probably the worst pain for me of the whole experience. It was really only around for the first week to week and a half. Moving around helped also heating pad/heated blanket. Hang in there you’ll be past it soon if your surgery was the 26th.

Yeah, once I stopped the liquid diet at about 3 weeks I stalled too. The nutritionist told me that it was my body balancing things out adjusting water weight and things like that. I kept losing inches even though the scale wasn't moving for about 2 weeks.

sounds like the infamous three-week stall...

Is the sneezing a food allergy
learn2cook replied to Poke's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It looks like you are 4 days post op. You should be on liquids at this stage. Please call your doctor’s office. Healing is slow and you need to take care of yourself. There is a process of adding kinds of food textures every two or three weeks. You should have booklets and pamphlets on this, or watch the WLS videos on YouTube to get an idea for meals and sipping water constantly. -
I would say that is a stall. I think most people here had that around the third week post-op. Try not to stress about it. Stalls are normal

I’m 21 days post op and have lost 16-18 lbs (depends on the day) but I’ve been kinda hanging at that weight for about 5 days. My doc said they was normal but I’m wondering as this is a revision if I’ll keep losing or is that it? I’m down 36-38 lbs from before I started the 2 week pre-op Optifast diet. Never intended this for more weight loss just to stop the GERD but now that I’ve had some I want more. I’m at about 750 calories a day now on the purée phase. Just short walks around the neighborhood. I get pretty tired during the day and nap at least once a day. Water and protein are on target. Thanks for any insight?

Stalls in weight loss after bariatric surgery are common and can occur for a variety of reasons, including changes in diet, hormonal imbalances, or the body adapting to the weight loss. It's important to consult with your surgeon and/or dietitian to determine the cause and address it appropriately. They may suggest adjusting your diet or increasing physical activity. Additionally, it's important to remember that weight loss is not always linear and can fluctuate over time. Keep track of other health markers, such as body measurements, energy levels, and overall health, to gauge progress and ensure that you are on track.

I was put on a nutrition bag and a fluid bag yesterday, the process took 3 hours. Nothing stays down, not even baby sips and bites. The biggest meal I’ve had since surgery was 3 baby spoonfuls. I’m supposed to sip water all day so far I’ve managed about 6oz in a day

Is there any “tasteless’” protein powder?
Arabesque replied to Taniya's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I bought a big tub of ‘flavourless’ pea protein powder & it was awful. All I could taste was a stale pea flavour. It was probably linked to the temporary change in my taste buds because I love peas but I couldn’t stomach that. I never had another protein shake after those first two weeks. I discovered a high protein drinking yoghurt (make your own by blending yoghurt & milk) & I could eat yoghurt from purée. Got another 15 - 30g of protein depending which I had. -
The gas drops & gasX won’t work because the surgical gas isn’t in your digestive system but in your abdominal cavity. It rises to settle under your lungs & puts pressure on nerves causing the discomfort. It passes into the lungs where it escapes the body in water droplets you breathe out. Best thing to do is walk (as much as you can) & you can also march on the spot, do gentle arm lifts sitting or standing & deep slow breathing. Many find heat packs soothing. It usually disappears in about a week +/-. Congrats on your surgery .

November 2022 Surgery Buddies
kbsleeved replied to Crystal Leifheit's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Don't be surprised if your weight stalls when you start strength training. I started at the beginning of the year 3x/week and my weight stalled for a little more than two weeks but it finally started dropping again a few days ago once my body adjusted. -
I’m 4 weeks post op.. but day after surgery my CO2 was low abnormally and I had to get extra iv and it was low but normal low.. yesterday my primary told me to get blood to see if I was okay and my co2 is still low but critical but I’m worried .. anyone else? Everything is fine my b12 is a little high but all my vitamins are great my liver heart and kidneys also good and my wbc is finally normal .. anyone else with low co2?

I feel like I have not hit a stall neither and I'm about 10 weeks, granted I do not weight myself daily, more of once a week to keep me on track. I would not worry about a 2-pound gain, it can be the new food you are trying or retaining water, which is usually my case.

November 2022 surgery support!
NP_WIP replied to feisty one's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hello, how are the November people doing? I have been doing good, did not see much weight loss last week since I was on vacation and did eat carbs and had a margarita, but did not gain. I started to walk 30 to 1 hr 5 times a week and will start strength training soon just not the stomach portion since sometimes I do have some small numbness there still.
