Can anyone offer some help? x
PrettyThick1 replied to rosieposie88's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Quantity doesn't matter to us, quality does and from the list you've described you should have any of this stuff at this stage of the game anyway. What about your Protein? Rice (carbs), rice cakes (carbs), salad (no nutritional value alone, lettuce leaves) all can swell and or go down too large to pass through. Rapid weight loss won't hurt you, but if you aren't getting the proper nutrition your body will eventually respond in kind. You can expect to feel weak, suffer from hair loss, brittle nails, poor skin quality and the elasticity in your skin will also suffer. Until you can adopt better food choices, you should show diligence in taking your Vitamins and supplements. -
Finally after plateauing for a long time, I have lost nearly 5lbs. What have I done differently? Well I listened to the psych finally. I stopped weighing myself altogether, and stopped getting weighed and measured at the gym too. His concern was that the small difference I would see from weighing daily, or even weekly could have a detrimental effect how I eat if it doesn't look good. I only weighed at the dietitian's and when I went for my last check up and fill at the specialist's rooms on Thursday. Anyway they are both pleased with my progress and say I am right on track with the weight loss progress. I have also increased my sessions at the gym to compensate for not being able to walk far because of a problem with my ankle and that too seems to have worked in my favour. In all the time that I was plateauing, though, I was getting smaller and everyone was making favourable comments. I could see it in the clothes I was wearing too and that there were less bulges poking out everywhere. I have gone down from a size 20 (Australian sizing) to an 18, and can fit in some size 16 long pants and tops. For the first time in MANY years I have bought clothes in 'normal' shops as opposed to 'fat girl' shops, and am buying 'Large' as opposed to 'extra large' or even 2XL. I do feel good and love being banded. It is definitely working.

Hi Debbi, It really sounds like your friend is genuinely "concerned" but I am willing to bet that most of those people posting on that site are totally UN-informed as to what you are doing. Just stay POSITIVE about yourself and try not to let the negative comments get to you. It's so important to do TONS of research about Lap band. I bet a million dollars that all those people haven't a clue about what you are doing. They read the news and hear about weight loss surgery when in fact it's probably BYPASS surgery they are mostly hearing/reading about. Just do your thing girl! Don't lose your friend over it.. but I totally understand why you would be upset over the post she made. best of luck to you!!! 278/230/180

My closest friend supports me 100%. She even sends me cards on the mail to congratulate and encourgae me. My second closest friend didn't say much when I told her I was getting the band. And here 10wks after, she still doesn't say much to me. I see her twice a wk and maybe once in a while she'll say "you're looking good". It could be the personalities, but to me, complete 180's between the both. So I keep #1 updated even when she doesn't ask, and #2 only when she does. No biggy but a surprise! I do have 2 friends who keep drilling me about my weight loss but til yet, I don't care to tell them. They're the "hey my friend" in your face until you turn your back....I just don't want to hear about their snickering, at least not right now. I image though, they keep drilling, they'll find out eventually, from me or someone else...who cares!

patrickgd replied to patrickgd's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Well I just returned from weighing in and lost 10 lbs. this first week following surgery. That combimed with the 14 I had lost the week and a half before surgery comes to a total of 24 lbs. total loss. I know I have to increase the activity to keep losing. So this week I will begin walking daily. -

Okay, just popping in to say, I want to go on a cruise too!!!! As for the hair, I am starting to have a problem with a bit falling out now. But, mine is so thick, I could stand to lose a little. But, I went and got mine cut the other day and my hairdresser commented on how a lot of my new hair growth is coming in curly. I have always had really straight hair. Has this happened to anyone else?

I can happily report that I've done 30-60 minutes of exercise daily for over 2 weeks. I'm trying very hard to get my weight loss going so I've really committed to the exercise. I'm getting in over 10,000 steps a day. Generally 12K to 15K steps and adding in swimming on the weekends along with stretching. It's not helped my weightloss a bit, but at least I'm getting the good feeling of accomplishing the exercise and sticking with it.

Arghhhh....6 Month Weight Management
Barisaxylady replied to GiGi3's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Have you ever done Weight Watchers? My insurance accepted 6 months of continuous weigh ins from WW. Mine were almost a year old too. Good luck. Insurance companies are such a joke. Mine will cover weight loss surgery but not a nutritionist to avoid the surgery. shesh! -
Where do you get this folicure shampoo? Do you think it makes your hair dry? I was using Nioxin but it seemed like it was drying out my hair. I used it from day one after surgery, and it didn't seem to help. My hair is falling out like crazy.

This is so scarey!!! I'm very partial to keeping my hair. Does this happen to everyone? Katydid.

OK I think my fish is moving again! Thanks for the help! BTW, my friend Debbie looks gorgeous! She and her daughter are looking more like "sisters' everyday! The feeling of being "deprived" from the foods and the way we used to eat is being replaced with better habits. Both of us still do something wrong every now and then, but the "sleeve police" lets you know it! We are both taking Biotin and washing our hair with Folicure to prevent hair loss. Mine is falling out some, but it always does in the Summer. Anyone had luck using Biotin and Folicure? Any other suggestions?

2 Year old had VSG 2 years ago.
AmandaRaeLeo replied to JerseyGirl68's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
This article has a bit more info and whatnot. Beware of the comments tho. They are, as usual, brutal and full of a bad fattitude. http://www.cnn.com/2013/09/20/living/parents-2-year-old-weight-loss-surgery/index.html?hpt=hp_bn11 -

Justinh125 replied to JerseyGirl68's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Not a doctor, but I worked in metabolic physiology research labs for many years, and I disagree with this idea. Children grow. It takes enormous amounts of calories to grow, especially during times like puberty. Not to mention nobody has studied the potential long-term consequences of this surgery on children. It's possible he had a genetic mutation that prevents his body from making the hormone leptin. If this is the case, injections of leptin would have been just as effective (if not more so) than any bariatric surgery. Note: leptin injections are extremely effective for people that are truly leptin-deficient. The results are usually more robust than any weight-loss surgery. Turns out that most obese people actually do make leptin, so the shots wouldn't help most of us. -
2 Year Surgiversary & 150 Pounds Gone! (With pics)
livvsmum posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Today marks 2 years since my surgery. I never, ever would have thought I would be in the 120s when I started this journey. It has- and I have- surpassed my wildest expectations. I remember vividly the exact day I decided I had to do whatever it took to lose weight & be healthy. I was at Hershey Park with my then-6th grader daughter on a class field trip. I love parks, and since I didn't have the littles, I was excited to ride the roller coasters with my daughter. So we came to the first one, I squeeeeezed myself into the seat & to get the lap bar down the attendant had to step on it to push it past my huge stomach. I was mortified and my daughter felt terrible for me. I was nearly in tears; in my minds eye, I was no where near that big. I didn't ride another ride the rest of the day & swore at that point I would not let my weight hold me back from experiencing life with my family one more day. It HAD TO change. Don't you worry. Since then I've OWNED that park!! In fact, the next time I went back was not only to ride every freaking roller coaster in that park, but also to run a 1/2 marathon through the park just over a year later. Take THAT!!! Lol. Anyway, these 2 years have been amazing. I've learned that my body is capable of so much more than I gave it credit for. I've learned I absolute can accomplish even the most seemingly unreachable goals. I've learned that I could not achieve long-term success without overcoming my eating disorder. I've learned that I deserve good things. So, it's definitely NOT about the numbers, but I feel like I would be leaving out something someone following this might really want to know if I didn't include them so.... I started my journey at 278.4 pounds & 2 years later I am at 128 pounds. That's a loss of 150 pounds :-). What an amazing journey it's been!!! I even rocked my first bikini ever this year! Ha! -
My Fitness Pal is another good source of support. You can down load the app. I'm (so sleeve). Well with getting protein in first, fluids and walking your weight loss will pick up. Congrats on the 3kg in 4 days! You are an inspiration to me. I hope to be sleeved by March! Keep up the good work!

Feeling down on myself...need advice
Melolo replied to lovemyband's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
CONGRAGULATIONS!!! WOW! Way to go! I've just had my surgery last Monday. And I can't wait to get to where you're at when it comes to weight loss. Please be encourage. If you feel you are doing everything right and it's come to a stand still... Then maybe you should see your doctor. Talk to him about getting a slight fill or if you believe it could be thyroid realted then ask him to prescribe some Lab work. I have a slight thyroid problem and my doctor prescribed me some medication for it today. Talk with your doctor and let him know everything you're doing to lose weight. My Lap Band Surgeon recommended that I do the South Beach diet which emphasize more protien and vegetables. Especially protien so that I'm feeding muscle and not fat. Are you lifting weights that burns calories and tones the body. All I know is that you need to keep going and not be down on yourself. The weight that you have lost is nothing to laugh at you should be very proud of yourself.:Banane37: -
I need all of your help...PLEASE
Mac the Knife replied to BlessedTwice's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I just posted a similar lament elsewhere, Blessed, but you aren't alone. I'm "only" down 31 lbs. since my operation (2/13) and have essentially gone from excessively eating all the time to a four-step cycle of (1) fill, (2) starve, (3) eat like a normal human being, (4) pig out. Last month I had to be briefly hospitalized during the 'starve' cycle, having dizzy spells, blackouts and general weakness. I was told I was dehydrated, but during the 'starve' cycle I easily drink 100 ozs. a day, so that's BS. I'm as unsettled as you are; I haven't completely given up (after all, I'm still down 31 lbs.) but after looking around here and seeing where my February brethren are in their weight loss goals, it's discouraging. -
CONGRATS SanDiegoPhotog! Keep up the good work. Don't be shy about your weight loss. We all work hard to meet our goals. I do just as JB is doing. I just say I lost or on my way to losing a......

I'm a male who currently weights 421 pounds. I'm being banded on December 5th. I'm curious about what I can look forward to on weight loss in the long run?
-
I have had 3 surgeries in the last 2 years, a band placement, a band revision, and now the sleeve, and they were all late in the day like yours, waiting to go in sucks, but afterward your sooo drowzy and doped up and the nurses are in and out taking blood preasures and all that stuff you'll wish someone would leave you alone. dont worry, it;ll go by fast, and you'll be home. good luck on your surgery and weight loss......vicki

Rant ????????????
CowgirlJane replied to newbeginings85's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I admire your handling of this but I think you are also giving her too easy of a pass. Anybody trained in medicine in the last decade must surely recognize the obesity epidemic and how few can manage it without surgery once morbidly obese. I have skinny ass friends who are Barbie doll types, not medically trained who were more understanding than this doctor in training. I do not think I need to have blocked arteries to understand the need for bypass, I don't need to be a diabetic to understand need for insulin. I don't buy the premise that only obese people can understand. Again, you did the right thing completely but don't ever think a medical person has any permission to judge you just because he/she isn't obeses Sadly in my life the least supportive people are obese. My skinny friends were over the moon for me. A very trim, polished and georgeous senior executive at my company congratulated me privately after I maintained for a year. She guessed (but no big deal) I'd had WLS. Her comment to me was she'd seen plenty of people have massive weight loss but so few maintain it. She was very very complimentary and she is a stick by my standards. I am fine if people are indifferent to my health journey but they don't get a pass just because they are skinny. -
Success With Hypothyroidism?
Ms skinniness replied to buffythefatslayer's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
I do not have hypothyroidism, but I'm curious as to why someone with this disorder can't take medication for this to enhance weight loss with surgery? -
ReadytoMaintain- I basically fit 12's & 14's depending on cut, material, and style of the garment. Sizes vary greatly, but I don't mind trying on clothes, so that's okay with me. I'm still having trouble convincing myself that this weight will not come back as soon as I'm done losing it like every other time. So far I've gotten rid of 24's through 16's. I think I might have to hold onto my 14's for a while, once I'm out of that size, until I can get my head around it or find someone in need (that always makes it easier). Congratulations on your loss so far, it won't be long before you're posting about your size 10's zipping up!

Pictures are the best for me too. I don’t think I could truly gauge my weight loss without it. It has become my best motivator.
