    Sleeve or gastric for heartburn

I had fairly consistent obesity induced heartburn when I was at my heaviest weights. I knew from past experiences with diet and weightloss that my heartburn went away when I was lighter. So I was hoping that would be the case for me post-sleeve. However, I have experienced heartburn and reflux even though I'm now at a weight where, in the past, it would have gone away. My surgeon had me on a prescription of 40mg of Prilosec for two months post-op. I was then supposed to stop taking it, but as soon as I did, I had serious heartburn and reflux problems. Now I am on the over-the-counter dosage of 20mg and that seems to do a good job of keeping the reflux at bay. I have a feeling that this will be a life-long thing for me now, but honestly, it seems like a small price to pay. I've already committed to a lifetime of vitamins and supplements with this surgery, so what's one more pill to take daily?
  2. Yup. What Angel said. Since there is no way to really know without going in laproscopically, weight lost is the next best indicator. In theory, a person could lose a lot of scale weight, and their liver may still be too heavy to place the band, I guess.
  3. I was curious as to how everyone calculates their total weight loss. Do you include how much you have lost from your highest weight or only what you have lost post-op? I was at my highest weight right before my surgery so I personally feel as though using my pre-op weight loss is warranted but, does it really count? Thoughts? Calculating total weight loss

I basically calculate two numbers. My overall weight loss in a year, which just happens to be my heaviest weight and my post-op weight loss. It’s just automatically tracked in my scale’s app but I think my scale starts when I bought it but my fitness pal tracks the total. Plus, 90 is more impressive than 50.
  5. Hi all! I decided to start sharing my story since I am coming from a totally different perspective than most, I am a registered and licensed dietitian! While I have battled weight all my life and I have all the knowledge I could imagine on eating healthy....I let my mind take over and ignored what was happening to my body. Never in a million years did I think that I would have WLS, but I did! I think the idea of the sleeve and removing the factor of malabsorption as in the bypass helped with my decision. While I was a very healthy obese person, I knew the consequences that would face me later in life if I didn't make a drastic change. In addition, my confidence as a dietitian became nonexistent. I needed to get my mojo back....so here I am 1 week out from surgery and overcoming the hurdles of recovery. I started at 285 pounds before preop diet and as of today I am 249! While my education tells me this can't be healthy, my mind and body know it's a necessity and I will ultimately reach a healthy goal. I love reading all your posts and support! This is truly a journey for all...I joke around that I am going to write a book because I am probably the only Registered Dietitian that had WLS! Lol! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  6. You will be amazed at the difference your weight loss makes. Tomorrow is my 4 week anniversary and it is night and day when I play tennis. Have you tried the Brooks Ariel or New Balance 1340? A strong motion control shoe with good shock absorbtion can help. You may need a different type of custom orthotic. There are many types and methods of creating customs. Best of luck!
  7. It's perfectly normal to be nervous and scared. If you weren't I would be worried about you. Now the chances of your liver being too big is very slim. Especially for women, it's more common for men. I've only seen one or two people on here say they couldn't get the band because their liver was too big. They did a couple more weeks on the liquid diet and they were good to go. They were both guys. You'll go great. Good luck and take care and let us know how it goes as soon as you can. Just go to www.tickerfactory.com select the weight loss, follow the instructions, then copy and past the url in your signature, and your'e good to go.
  8. If this is a lactose intolerance problem, which is not uncommon post-op, then whey Protein isolate can be used as it has had the lactose filtered out of it as part of the process. Isolate is expensive, so the cheaper Protein drinks are usually blend of cheaper whey concentrates, isolate and other sources. Yogurt also has had most, if not all, of the lactose consumed in the fermentation process, and many cheeses are very low in lactose. One can also take :Lactaid tablets just prior to consuming dairy with lactose in it. On the minimum amount of protein required, that is largely dependent upon lean body mass. A small, light (will be light!) woman who may end up with a healthy weight in the 100-110 lb range will need somewhere in that 55-60 g range while a fairly muscular man may require 100g or more to maintain their lean body mass. Inclination towards increasing muscle mass or healing from major trauma can add 50% to those figures.
  9. My requirement per my surgeon is 40 g per day. Your requirement should go down as your weight decreases. I currently weigh 160.

    Restriction and daily calories

My doctor has the following guidelines: Calories 800; Carbs 40; Protein 65-80; Water At least 64 oz. Weigh and Measure everything, and Track your food. Protein first, followed by veggies. When I follow the guidelines I lose weight. I include one shake a day to up my protein. I totally avoid protein bars -- too many carbs. I think your proposed plan of an egg for breakfast and a piece of chicken for lunch and dinner would not be successful. You would "fall off the wagon" quickly and become more discouraged. I've had some difficulties lately and I'm just getting back on track. It is tough, but I won't give up. I am determined to reach my goal. Best of luck to you.

    Severe mood swings

a lot of women complain about moodiness the first few months. I'm not sure if there's actual medical research to back this up, but many people have said it's because estrogen is stored in fat cells, and when you lose weight quickly, a lot of that is released. Many women also report screwed-up menstrual cycles the first few months, so I suspect the hormone theory is probably correct. It should all work itself out though - it doesn't seem to last more than a few months - so you may be near the end of it. 45 lbs in 3 months is pretty good. It takes many of us about a year to lose 100 lbs, so you're doing just fine. as far as baggy, saggy skin - some of that will look better eventually because things seem to re-distribute a bit over time - but after a 100 lb weight loss, you'll inevitably have some saggy skin. I had a ton of it. I could easily hide it in clothes so no one knew it was there, but *I* knew it was there, so I had it removed when I was about three years out. So that's an option if you decide you can't live with it..
  12. Unfortunately, we will be tested like this everyday, and every time we open the fridge, the pantry, or go out to eat. The surgeons can fix the stomach, but they cannot fix the brain, and all the triggers that make us crave the foods that got us into the situations that caused us to have gastric bypass surgery. You need to be strong, things will get better, you will learn to find healthier choices to the foods that you crave. Eventually you we be able to introduce some of the things that you like, back into your diet in moderation. It is also great motivation to keep on tract when your weight starts to drop weight like you're melting away. I have now lost 112 lbs in 5 1/2 months and it feels great! Good luck! 5 day liquid diet

My liquid diet wasn't entirely liquid--I had two shakes and a light dinner. Didn't lose any weight to speak of on it, but did lose 25 pounds pre-surgically before that. Doctor never mentioned my liver post-op. As has been said many times before, we're all different and our programs require different things. Do what your surgical team says and be confident that things will work out as they should. It's a long road . . . but change is coming fast!
  14. When I was within 10 pounds of goal I started eating more fruit and whole grains. I kept losing. When I reached goal I added even more calories....full fat dairy, more complex carbs (in addition to the 69-80g Protein + veggies and fruit I had been getting). Still lost another 10 pounds. But when my body was ready to stop it stopped and I've maintained within the same 5 pound bounce range for over a year. Turns out my body picked my goal. Just remember, your body doesn't really care about the arbitrary number you or your nut or your surgeon picked out as a "goal". Quite simply, you will continue to lose until you eat enough to meet your caloric expenditures. If you eat more than you burn you'll start gaining again. If you want to stop losing at this point you simply need to add more calories. If you log your food, great, if not that's fine, too.... I've done this without ever tracking, measuring portions or counting calories.

    Weight gain

Yup, like @@onthefencejenny said, just normal adjustments the body is going through. You will probably experience a stall here soon, too. Your body is just going a little wacky is all. You are going to flucuate all the time during this journey. If the flucuations are going to drive you crazy, put the scale away so you don't have to see them Here's a good article about why it happens: http://www.dsfacts.com/weight-loss-stall-or-plateau.php
  16. I am not at goal yet, 10 months out 123 lost, 49 to go. My NUT told me though, once I get to goal I would have to add a healthy snack or 2 between meals to maintain weight. Hope that helps.

How many days until solids, according to your Dr?

My instructions were two weeks liquids, one week mushies. So, I'm supposed to be on mushies now, but I'm sucking at it... Sad, cuz I did so well on the pre-op diet!! Needless to say, I haven't lost much weight since surgery.

Grrr..my family is driving me crazy!

I'm the cook here. I also do the grocery shopping. I don't deprave my kids from chips or soda but its not an everyday thing. I have the healthy choice which is Quaker cheddar (I know more expensive then regular chips) but it works for me. If I need a crunch I grab my Quaker cheddar. I have crystal light lemon flavor (replaces soda) lots of water. Nuts a lot of yummy things. I don't crave junk food it's rare. I have my sugar free Hershey chocolate which I have only on PMS or Russell sugar free chocolate. It doesn't bother me having chips & soda or cooking fried chicken for my family. I decided during my 30 day diet that I will be strong & I won't fail after surgery & I haven't gain weight. I been faithful to my food. Fruits & veggies are my best friend now. Be strong fight it! You want to be a success. We are all here for you.
  19. How much weight have you lost? I am down 66 pounds since February 19. How are you doing?
  20. You are in the red zone. You're right. You don't lose weight in the red zone. Get an unfill!
  21. I feel I am to tight.I can barley drink anything without taking baby sips.. I havent eaten a meal in about a month. I would say I get 1/2 cup of food down and feel it sitting in my chest. Have not lost any weight and just feel miserable. I called to get an unfill because I do not feel this is normal. I am going take my chances of doing it without being miserable. If I am stressed or really not feeling stress nothing will go down. I heard that if you are to tight you will not lose any weight?
  22. Thanks for the reply. I hadn't thought of that. I was just wondering how it's different. Like, I know what life is like with the band. Don't eat too fast or too much at a time, chew 25 times eraser sized bites or you'll throw up. Weight loss is fast, but not so fast that you seem sick. (around 10lbs a month). Is it the same for the sleeve? or the Gastric bypass? I know how the band works. Just trying to compare.
  23. I was sleeved on January 16th and my scale says 21 lbs. However, when I went to the dietition and got on the "magic scale" it said that I had gained 8 pounds of muscle and lost 25 lbs. No quite sure what that is all about but I think that because my BMI is lower I am building muscle pretty fast. I do feel hungry alot and usually eat cheese or something when I feel that uncomfortable feeling. I am ramping up my walking and Water hoping that it will drop a little quicker. I did not have trouble eating anything except beef, ground beef. Have not tried any other type of beef and really don't want to. I do find that I am having more trouble eating now than I did. I wonder if my stomach is healing now and tightening down a bit or maybe I just feel it more now. Still having a little trouble with my blood pressure and my medicine slows down my metabolism so I am going to talk to my doctor about that. My husband who also had the surgery had alot of trouble with vomiting the first month or two. He is six months out now and is not having that trouble anymore. Good luck and I hope you feel better.
  24. Hi. I am on victoza. They say it simulates the experience of having a weight loss surgery. Is it true?
  25. I am also in the process of doing this. I'm almost 4.5 years out with my band. I only lost about 25 lbs but have gained it back! I have type 2 diabetes and pcos. My current surgeon told me that the band is NOT for people with 100 lbs to lose and it is NOT for someone with diabetes. He also said they are taking out more bands than they are putting in. (I'm going to the naval hospital in Portsmouth, VA; its huge so i'd imagine that they see a lot of these!) I have seen quite a few people able to lose 100 lbs but they were already very verrrry overweight. I don't know how many were diabetic. I do know that I'm pissed! I needed to lose this weight 5 years ago, so I'm beyond ready for june 12 to be here. My doctor says my surgery will take about an hour and a half, but has allotted 3 hours for it in case of any band complications. Keep us informed on how things go for you!
