    Iron Supplements

I didn't start until my labs - sometime shortly after one year post op. I was very low in Iron. I should have done labs at 6 months, too, but didn't. I've always had a problem with iron and even three years post op I take a prescription iron supplement daily. ~Cheri
  2. My name is Maren and I live in Alabama. I'm 34, with a high weight of 293 and a BMI of 47 (starting). I have BCBS and am in my third month of the 6 month supervised weight loss. My doc has me doing a controlled carb diet, mostly to get me in the mindset of putting protein first and carbs last for my post-surgery lifestyle and I'm down to 278 after only a few weeks of *really* trying. Believe me, I've done the calculations and know that to be safe in terms of insurance coverage, I shouldn't get below 260. I think I'll have to add back in a few carbs over the next few months and then once I'm approved, get back on track. That's sad, considering I've been morbidly obese for about a decade, but I'll play the games just like everyone else. For a long time I've thought casually about surgery, but I haven't gotten serious until recently. I actually don't have any major health concerns yet but I've had three miscarriages (no successful pregnancies) and even though there is no clear reason why weight would have anything to do with it, my OB specialist recommended I put off any more attempts until I lose weight. My doctor (primary) and my OB-GYN think I should do the full bypass because of my weight, but I have thought a lot about it and think I prefer the band. I'll hold off final decision until I talk with my surgeon, but in the meantime I'll be preparing for the LapBand procedure. I look forward to learning from you all and journeying with you. -Maren

    Introduction

Thanks for the reply- I appreciate hearing from people with a similar issue. The morbidity/mortality comparison makes me really like the band, as does its versatility. Even though my OB says he's had patients with bypass have successful pregnancies, I just worry about the "what if I need more room" issue to provide adequate nutrition. And frankly, when I get right down to it, because of my job (college professor), I can't really easily take off at least 2 weeks for post-surgery recovery unless I want to wait another year for next summer when I don't have any classes. I don't get "vacation" or "sick days" like most people do because of the different nature of our work calendar.

    Scared of the gastric sleeve

Don't be frightened, Lala. We all get the jitters as the date approaches. I had a lot going on in my life approaching my surgery date - so I pushed it back by three weeks and went on holiday to get some sunshine and reflect. The time gave me the space I needed to weigh up all the pros and cons. On reflection, the pros dwarfed any cons I could identify. Nearly 6 months out and apart from the stall frustration - I am a very happy camper. I suggest you write yourself your own list of pros and cons and see where that takes you. You might be in for a surprise. The best of luck with whatever you decide
  5. i was denied the 1st time b/c i have a BMI of 35 and only had high blood pressure. I took it upon myself and scheduled a sleep study and have sleep apnea and had the dr submit additional paperwork the week after my denial. I called EVERY day to BCBS to check status and a week after dr submitted additional paperwork they told me that I was denied again. Said that they had no BMI info and i had no co morbitities. I argues with the rep until she looked thru the paperwork that dr sent in and she found it and resubmitted to medical review. I got a call today fromBCBS telling me that I'M APPROVED....

    GEHA Insurance

I have GEHA and had no problem with getting an approval for the band. You do have to do a 6 month Dr supervised diet. Your BMI is high enough. Mine is 55. It took them 2 week to make a decision. Hope this helps. Barbara. PS there are others that I have read about here that also have GEHA and also no problems getting an approval.

    Post sleeve

I've been sleeved for nearly a full month. Everybody's experience is different, but I did not have pain drinking Water. I did experience some nausea and it wasn't easy to drink - for me it was as if I'd had the stomach flu, and so my stomach was inflamed and sore. Mostly, day one was lots of pain and thirst - you can't drink until they test you for leaks the next day, so I was really dry and thirsty. A nurse was kind enough to give me a foam swab to moisten my mouth a bit, and I was on dilaudid for the pain. These got me through a very painful day one. But I was up and walking within 6 hours of the surgery, albeit very very slowly. Expect the first week to be just awful. It's not as bad as all that but better to over-anticipate your unpleasantness and be pleasantly surprised. After that it's a slow climb back. At almost 4 weeks, I feel very tired and still sore, but I'm nearly back to my old self.

    Please help....

i have been started on mushy food.... i had surgery alittle over 2 weeks ago.... and my stomach hurts.... not where the band it but the bigger part of my stomach hurts.... usually when i eat it hurts more!!!! is this normal or????
  9. It worked for me! I never had the band, but unless I was taking phentermine, I was a bottomless pit. I could eat and eat and eat until I was stuffed and then crave more food 30 minutes later. Even when I did WWs, Atkins, South Beach, etc. food was constantly on my mind. Phentermine was the only thing that really turned that off for me until sleeve surgery. Now I hate being full. I think about food, but I don't crave it. I crave certain things from time to time, but it's a"I'd love to eat some..." not a "I **MUST** eat something..." I am three years out and I am thankful for this change every day.

Hi Laura...I love dogs too. Congratulations on getting banded. How did you like your first fill? I have had two so far. They didn't do my third fill because I lost 14 pounds in a month. I have been struggling the last 2 weeks though as the scale hasn't moved. I am going to a support group on the 29th. That's a shame yours is so far away. Having a band really does require support! Message me if you'd like To chat.
  11. Andrea Are you full after you eat a WW meal?? When you say breadstick are you talking about the ones that are like pretzels or the kind from olive garden (real bread) how much salad did you eat and what kind of dressing. How may calories are you consuming in a day?? For me personally - I want to eat more than 1/4 or 1/2 cup per meal - IMHO eating only 1/2 cup 3 x day is not healthy. This is a lifetime lifestyle change in our eating - its the combination of eating healthy (low fat - low sugar) and the restriction the band provides by making you feel fuller on a smaller quantity of food and adding exercise into your life. Weight loss is all about calories in vs calories burned - if you are consuming more than you are burning then the weight isn't going to come off. You say cuz you have done so well in the last 9 days that you ate 2 breadstick & salad - was this a reward for doing so good. There are theories out that that your body goes into starvation mode if you don't get enough calories - I am not a nutritionist or scientist - so I can't debate that - but for me if I vary my calories - say 950 today and 1100 tomorrow and 1000 the next day - I do ok. I keep a food diary and track my calories and Protein grams and log my exercise - again which has been a very big part in my success too. I have been truly bless cuz I have had a lost every week since I started this journey (well except for 1 and I didn't gain stay even) Suggest - write down what you are eating - the amounts and calories and then total them every night - do that for a week and go back to exercising and see if it helps get the ball rolling again. Good Luck..
  12. my third fill was last tuesday and my doctor said my band was tight. for the first week i barely ate. i didnt lose any weight though. in the past 3 days i can eat more but i am trying to keep the intake low. i havent been as hungry lately so im assuming its working better than before. this is the point right. i can still eat a whole weight watchers meal though. should i be able to eat this much? because ive done so well for the past 9 days i had 2 breadsticks and a salad tonight. i couldnt believe that my stomach could handle 2 breadsticks. i was worried at first because the first week of being adjusted this time my stomach ached on and off for days straight but now its back to feeling pretty normal. i need to really focus on my calorie intake and keep up on the exercising. i havent exercised in 9 days. i just wish i could hit the 40lb mark im so close. when is it going to start coming off again? should i go back on the strict diet that we were on in the beginning stages? andrea

    My broken system

You are likely in a stall due to not getting enough calories to sustain your level of activity. If you can't increase your calorie intake, because you still just physically can't eat enough, then try reducing your activity some. I wouldn't advocate that as a long-term solution though, since decreasing activity can lead to muscle loss. You need to find the right balance of calorie intake and activity to where you are in that sweet spot of losing steadily, but not sending your body into "starvation mode".

  15. I'm 5 weeks out and have a severe burning sensation in my esophagus/ throat is this normal?...and remedies?
  16. I have been drinking shakes everyday for about 2 weeks and today I have noticed being bloated. Is this common from the shakes? I dont use milk but buy the slim-fast or special K ones pre-made. I also have lost of gas regularly.
  17. I had gastric sleeve surgery March 18th this year. Today is 7 weeks post-op. I'm missing pilates. When can I resistance train again? I did light pilates yesterday and slept 11 hours last night.. is it too soon?
  18. i haven't had surgery so i probably don't know what i'm talking about, but maybe your stomach is still quite swollen and tender at this stage? plus you had hernia repair which might be tender too. last year i had two surgeries (not in my abdomen) and i was on oxycodone every four hours for a week!
  19. I am two weeks out (surg 8/25) and upon my one week post op my Dr. told me I was not taking in enough protein so instead of following the diet on the paper that recommended 4oz of (tea, protein shake, broth, etc) each hour on the hour, that I should be sipping on my protein shake or isopure juice all day with little sips at a time (as if you are drinking something really hot). I changed the way I was doing it and I feel more full during the day and a bit stronger since I am now getting closer to the recommended protein amount. I just started adding in Chobani yogurt (1/2 for lunch and 1/2 for dinner) and it fills me up nicely. First adjustment in another 5 weeks. Just hope the fullness continues as I graduate next week into the purree part. I just keep looking at the goal line and know that any suffering I may do will all be worth it in the end!!!
  20. I am in the same boat as you. Funny that Janet has posted here before I had the chance to. She is such an inspiration to me and such a wonderful friend of mine. It shouldn't surprise me that she is here cheering you on. I have just recently decided to get back on the bandwagon. For one reason or another, too many to go into right now, I'm starting again too. I originally lost 70 pounds. Have gained back 25 of that. It's time to get back to the program and do what I had decided to do in Dec. 07. My husband and I decided that this was the year we were both going to change our lives for good. We began taking charge almost 2 weeks ago. Here's what we did to get back in the groove. 1. We began with the 4 days of liquids. For me, to quit irratating my band, for him to shrink his stomach back to normal size so he wasn't always hungry. 2. We continued with the 5 day pouch test. 3. Now we are continuing with the divided plate idea, 1/2 Protein, 1/3 veggie, the rest a starch. To be honest, we often leave off the starch. If it isn't there, it can't be tempting. I also went through and threw out all the junk in the house. It was tough but I threw out quite a bit from the fridge and the freezers. We also joined the Blue Cross Blue Shield challenge. It will keep us accountable for the next 12 weeks. See if BCBS has a challenge going in your state. Ours was open to anyone no matter if you were a customer or not. There are lots of those out there, so see if you can find something. Other than that, it's just back to the basics. I'm here to tell you it is possible. Last week I lost 3 pounds, this week I'm on track to lose the same. My hubby lost 9. Don't think it can't be done. Find that gumption that we had when we started this process and tap into that strength you know is there. It IS there because you lost 50 pounds by using it. Good luck! And keep posting here!
  21. After staring at the same number for two weeks, the scale finally moved. Hooray! I always love to see this, even if it's not much, because a new number on the scale, no matter how small, usually means I broke through a plateau. There's hope yet

First Fill Monday, What Should I Expect?

I had my first fill a couple of weeks ago. It went really well. I was so nervous before hand, She had me lay back with my hands about my head. She felt for the port, and said it was easy to find . She injected a little bit of numbing meds, then inserted the needle. I won't lie, for me I definitely felt the needle going in, it didn't really hurt, but felt lots of pressure. she put in 3cc, band was empty at surgery. Then she had me sit up, with the needle still in that was weird, but it didn't hurt. I had to drink some water. Since it gurgled a little going down she took about 0.5cc. after that it went down fine. laid back down and she removed the needle. I was on full liquids for 2 days, then mushies for a day, then advanced my diet as tolerated. Felt a difference the first couple of days, no pain, but more pressure in my chest when I was eating or drinking. That went away. now I don't feel much different, unless I eat to fast. Hopefully iy will go as smoothly for you.
  23. Things are getting better and I weighed in today and I have lost 11 pounds in 8 days. What a big positive piece of reinforcement after a challenging first week after surgery. Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App
  24. I am 7 weeks post op and i have been eating just about what ever I want to since week 4. That is healty stuff. But it seems that I am hungry like every 2 to 3 hours. I feel like im eating all the time now. I cant eat large amounts like before my surgery. And suggestions on what I may need to do.
  25. Got this tip off of a Health Newsletter today...I wonder IF this would help us? I'm going to try it...it's Acupressure! If you've overdone it at the buffet table, here's a trick to ease the discomfort: Take a wire hairbrush or a metal comb, and start brushing or combing the backs of your hands. Brush gently but firmly enough to feel some tingly pressure (though not so hard as to injure your skin, of course). After three or four minutes, you should notice relief from that sluggish feeling you get after eating a big, heavy meal.
