  1. I was sleeved 10/29 @ 3:00pm. Let me say two weeks prior to surgery I was placed on protein drinks for two weeks. Let me also say I have done everything by the book. My pre op weight 351 surgery date weighed 347 (I know not much lost). Surgery went extremely well, removed a herna, stayed in hospital two days, could have gone the day after, I figured I would stay one more night no problem. My doc requires you to stay on protein drink 2 1/2 weeks after surgery. No big deal not hungry anyway, no pain, peeing not frequent but i know my kidney is working no pain meds, sip sip sip I go, walking and drinking 64oz of water ( last three days) feeling good. I began to notice swelling around ankles and thighes when i go to bed they go down. Well today 11/7 is my first post op doc appt I get on scale "GAINED 13lbs". OK I say to self how could u gain 13 lbs without eating, even before surgery I did not accomplish that and I was eating food. So my doc is saying how great I look etc etc. Then he said how much did u loose? I said NONE I GAIN. Then I said are u sure you did the procedure?? He said yes. He said that I had a lot of fluids during surgery and I keep drinking. So he gave me 10 days of water pills, he also made me get a blood test to check my kidney. I see him again on 11/30. I had tell this story I had not heard it before. I don't weight myself so I had no idea how much I gain, my ankles swelling would happen sometime prior to surgery (not enough to call it normal) . So I was not upset about the weight, because I followed the rules. I know my kidneys are fine and the water pills will remove the excess water. I said thank you God if I had to have a complication, i am glad it was this. Just wanted to share, I feel great and all will be well to b continued. Stay tune for 11/30 update. Give your thoughts.

    Can't quite figure this out.

Our bodies and these bands are unusual things, let me tell you! I have been working out like a fiend since January, and monitoring my diet closely (still eat no-no's every once in a while). But I mean like HEAVY workouts! 40mins of extreme cardio, then I do 15-20 mins on the rowing machine, then weights, abs, then swim laps for 20-25mins. I do this religiously 4X a week and have since Jan. 1st. The scale has gone up and down 4lbs both ways, but as of today, I am EXACTLY the same weight as I was January first. For those that plateau for a week or two, consider my sad situation..lol. I STILL keep doing just what I've been doing because I know my body will eventually "figure it out." I have not lost significant inches either and have kept track of that since day 1. What I did lose is MAJOR body fat My BMI has gone down by over 4pts since January first! My clothes fit looser (which I don't understand since no significant inches lost) and I feel STRONG and my body is noticeably more muscular. However, that DAM scale messes with my head daily!! Bottom line is, this process and our bodies act and react in unusual ways...just keep doing what you're suppose to, and eventually (I say this at 10 weeks waiting) it will give us the visual results we SO desire!! Congrats on your weight loss!!

    Depressed Help!

I had my band for 4 years after having issues and problems( toxic silicone syndrome) my doctor suggested I remove it and revise to gastric sleeve. The day of surgery I backed out on the sleeve because it's irreversible and I was afraid I would have the same symptoms of the band. I removed the band 3 weeks ago and can't eat much I have been in liquids and mostly protein diet. I keep getting stuck with regular food. I lost around 13 pounds. But I have been so depressed and been having panic attacks with anxiety attacks. Don't know why this is happening it just comes on uncontrollably. My body is reacting so weird. Had this happened to anyone? If so, please give me insight will it go away or what's causing this?

    We are OUTTA HERE!!!

How long you gonna be gone? I am leaving for a beach house tomorrow too but I'll be back on Monday. Might take my lap top but doubt there is any internet access there. See ya, next week all, Teresa
  5. For those who haven't been following my story............... I was diagnosed with an eroded band in November of 2011 and had it removed in March of 2012. I had to wait for six months before revising to the gastric sleeve as my surgeon wanted to wait for me to heal completely and do medical tests before confirming that I would be a good candidate for the sleeve. I have complete those tests and he was satisfied that I could have the sleeve. We also found that I had developed another hiatal hernia (the first one was repaired when I had my lap band surgery). My predetermination request for the sleeve surgery was denied. They stated that I needed to complete a six month weight loss program in order for them to consider my request. I asked my surgeon's insurance coordinator to appeal based on the reasoning that this was a repeat surgery for a lap band that had medically failed me and that I shouldn't have to complete the six month medically supervised weight loss program. She filed an appeal but no where in the letter did it address the six month weight loss program so of course they denied me again stating that we still hadn't submitted the records they had requested. Frustrated beyond belief, I took the initiative to write my own appeal letter. I used language from the BCBS-AL bariatric policy regarding repeat surgeries and their rationale for requiring the six month weight loss program and explained how I had met that rationale just by having a lap band for four years and that my waiting for six months before revising to another surgery was not conducive to improving my health. I just got off the phone with BCBS-AL and they have approved my surgery!!!!!! I am actually shocked that I succeeded in my appeal. I fully expected them to deny me and had already started the medically supervised six month weight loss program in preparation for that denial (and have lost 10 lbs over a six week period which is nice). I'm excited, relieved and nervous! I've been through this before so I don't know why but I am. I was very successful with my lap band (losing 94 lbs). I remember how wonderful it felt to be thin and feel good about myself and how I looked and not to be in pain anymore from carrying around all this extra weight (yes I packed the pounds back on after my band was removed). I can't wait to be there again! Yeah me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Low Carb Hell

Even for die hard carbaholics like me, I found my carb intake dropped by probably 2/3 effortlessly and I've never missed it. I used to the an advocate of the four serves of wholegrains a day, plenty of starchy fibrous veg and three serves of fruit a day. I was FAT. That would probably have more to do with the amount of sugar and fat I consumed on top of those healthy foods, but the overall balance was wrong. Now I do eat wholegrains, cant function without a little, but its ONE serve of wholegrain Cereal or maybe a slice of bread in a day, usually only one piece of fruit too. The rest is lean Protein, vegetables and a few little treats (like a glass of wine) on top. I cant eat any more than that and I dont miss the foods I used to eat in abundance. I didnt even set out to go lower carb, it just happens naturally. But what you're doing now, cold turkey and so extreme, that's really hard. I agree with your cardiologist, the South Beach approach is much gentler and probably healthier as well. I guess you've got to find out whether this is how your doctor wants you to eat forever, personally, although we've just had such a huge thread on breaking rules, I would do precisely what I'm told post op for the transition onto solids but after that, I wouldnt follow a way of eating so extreme, I'd not really limit fruit and things like tomatoes, I'd eat some wholegrains and I wouldnt freak over things like croutons in Soup. And I just dont get the point in cutting out so called "unhealthy" foods and then loading up on Protein shakes full of artificial sweetener. That's just plain nuts, its swapping one poison for another. I think you'll probably find your groove, but post surgery if you dont have restriction it will likely be one of the hardest things you've ever done, you just have to grit your teeth and get on with it and if you do slip, get right back on that wagon.
  7. It has been a long road but, I am finally getting sleeved. I was scheduled for April 20th of last year but a family tragedy the night before prevented me from going through with it. ( I did a two week liquid diet too!) I am starting my SECOND liquid diet Wednesday and am looking for anyone that wants to stay in touch during the journey.

    Excited

I am three weeks out and 30lbs down. I expect a stall at any point in time now. How long will a stall last for? What do I do when it does happen? Megan
  9. I took off one week. I'm a teacher. I felt better each day so you may think differently once Tuesday rolls around. I was definitely tired in the evenings the first week I went back to work. I'm 3 weeks post op now and feel good.
  10. I'm a teacher and have put in for a two week leave. My administration was totally fine with that and I just have to submit the required paperwork. I then will be back for one week (can we say LOTS of showing educational movies) and then will be home again for Spring Break. good luck =)
  11. My surgeon upfront said to take two weeks off, no matter what kind of job you had. This is for recovering from the surgery as well as adjusting to your new eating habits before adding work back into the routine. I have arranged for two weeks off following my surgery in March. I have a desk job, but I want that time to adjust food-wise too.
  12. My doctor told me to eat an Atkins diet for the 2 weeks prior to surgery. It helps to shrink the liver which is important because it is on top of the stomach. I have been having a shake when I feel like it to experiment with them. Doctor's office recommends Nectar brand mixed with 8oz. unsweetened soy or almond milk(1-2 carbs). Today I bought some sugar free Torani coffee syrups and mixed up a vanilla shake with salted caramel flavoring. It was yummy!

    How do I veggies?

Your pretty early out so eating much of anything is tough. Most vets say it takes 6 months to fully heal. Right now protein is essential so it's a primary eat. To eat a veggie requires planning. Once I really wanted some kale chips with my dinner. I made sure to drink two premium protein shakes early so I was sure to have my protein before I even started my meal with kale. I ate my kale first:-) Now that I have a little time and healing in, I can eat a bit more than I could at 4 weeks. I still eat my protein first but can fit in a little green veggie. Your vitamins are essential and I would figure out a way to get them down. I did chewables and gummies for quite a while. I still do my biotin in gummie form cause they taste so good:-). Maybe blend them in with your shake or find a chewable that tastes good. Check with your nut. Mine gave me a handful of samples to try. You will be surprised to learn that most food addicts are malnourished. There was little true nourishment in the foods that I was eating. The fact that my body is getting good, dense protein probably makes it pretty happy. Take care

    June 12 - Dr Cunneen

Wow. I am now around 1 month post op and at 208.1. heaviest was 245 around 6 weeks ago. 228 day of surgery. This has really been an incredible journey so far. Mostly I am just more tired than normal. I am looking forward to that part being better. First day was awful, and it got better after that.

    really?

It has been three weeks since I was banded, how my life has changed - I am down 15 pounds - I am happy - I just hope the weight continues to come off. I have changed eating habits - ok - so i didn't follow the recommended diet - But I am still doing good - Dr. didn't yell at me when I told him that i was eating already. He said I was doing so well he wasn't going to fill. I go back in a month. I still have these fears of all the times I was on Weight Watchers - where the weight starts to come off - then slowly comes back - This really has to work.
  16. Lot's of people have a stall at the 3 week point, so I think that is what is going on in your case, so just stick with the plan and you will be fine. Your NUT has probably given you three numbers to focus on. 1) Ounces of Fluid per day 2) Grams of Protein per day 3) Total calories per day As long as you are sticking by those numbers, it doesn't really matter how the calories are distributed. I would encourage you to always reach your protein goal. I think you should probably aim for 80 grams of protein instead of 60. Are you drinking Protein Shakes? There are also tons of threads on here about alternatives to protein shakes if you aren't drinking them. As far as other calories are concerned, they can come from protein, fat, or carbs. If you have a certain level of protein intake, and if you want to keep your calories the same then if you cut carbs then you must increase fat. There is nothing to be concerned about here. Remember that my fitness pal is a general website, not one geared specifically to people who have had weight loss surgery. I'm glad that you've made the decision to cut back on your carbs. As long as you are meeting your three targets (fluids, protein, and total calories) then don't worry about your fat consumption. To answer your specific question,I try to get 800 - 1000 calories per day. If I consume 125 grams of protein in a day, that's 500 calories. The other 500 have to come from the remaining groups. In my case I generally consume 20 - 30 grams of carbs per day, so the rest will come from fat. 30 grams of carbs is 120 calories, which means that I will consume 380 calories of fat, or 42 grams of fat per day.
  17. I've lost at pretty much the same rate since banding, though it's slowing down considerably now that I reach goal. It was very difficult, but I ate as if I had restriction even when I didn't. I know that doesn't work for everyone. It took me three fills to begin to feel restriction. After that, things got way easier. They have gotten progressively easier since. Well, except for the natural slowdown that has occurred as I've gotten nearer to goal. I have consistently eaten 2-5 oz. lean Protein and 1/2-1 cup nonstarchy veggies for my meals. I use 1-2 protein supplements/day. I journal on Fitday, and aim for 800-900 calories, 80-100 g protein, and <50 g net carb/day (primarily from veggie and legume sources.) I do not eat sugar, or use caffeine any more (important for appetite control, for me). I make sure I get adequate heart-healthy fat (supplementing with omega-3s). I take a good bariatric Multivitamin (and supplemented with zinc and Biotin during the hair loss phase), and take Co Q-10 daily, too. I exercise daily, at least once. For me, each of these components is important. It doesn't mean I don't occasionally indulge, but 99% of the time, I achieve what I set out to do. It's worth it, weight-wise. But mostly, I just FEEL a bazillion times better. Your mileage may vary--not everyone needs to follow the same regimen for success. This is just what works for me.

    Calories

Wow that sounds really good for your little tummy.......The most important thing to work on is getting your fluid intake in. Your protein drinks are also counted as liquids at this early out. When I was 2 weeks out, I was getting about 300 calories in, and most of it was from my protein shakes.
  20. Hello everyone! I'm not typically one to participate in forums, but this is pretty important so I need to get advice from others that have had the same procedure. I've decided with my surgeon to do the Sleeve procedure next month since I travel often for business and it is tough to fit follow up visits on my calendar. I'm a little freaked out by the fact that I will be on a liquid diet for 4-6 weeks. I'm also concerned about the pain post-surgery. Any suggestions or advice?
  21. Once again, Star is right on the money!! You will always have a tool to help you control your portions, but what makes up those portions is up to you. My weakness is cheetos, so I control that urge by allowing myself a single-serving bag of them once a month. That's what works for me. Other than that, I don't keep them in the house. For me, the first six months were rocket-like as far as weight loss. I dropped weight like crazy. At about 7 months out, I hit a plateau, which was a weight that I stayed at for nearly 10 years on my way up the scale. My weight loss, in pounds, slowed way down. BUT, once the weight loss slowed down, I started shape-shifting. I can almost watch my body change from week to week, and my measurements and clothes sizes reinforce that. I started in a 24/26 and I'm now in a 14/16. I'd be in a smaller size pants, but I have a bit of a tummy still. One thing that really affects how fast I lose pounds is that I got really serious about exercise. I have muscle and definition in places I didn't know I could have muscle and definition before. I had a body fat analysis at my doctor's office recently and it shows that I am within .01% of the amount of muscle I should have in my body for my height, even though my BMI is still in the obese category. That means that I am converting fat to muscle with exercise and that I've managed to protect my heart muscle from significant damage from rapid weight loss. That was a major worry of mine. My pulmonologist is also thrilled with my improved cardio fitness. The sleeve is a tool, but if you work it right, you'll be able to reach goal and to reach goal in a healthy manner. After all, it's not just about the pounds; it's also about enjoying your life and all of the newfound abilities that come with weight loss. If you're not sure what I'm referring to, please visit the "powder Room" and "Man Room" forums here on VST! Good luck on your journey!!
  22. When I had my surgery I did the entire thing by myself. I stayed in the hospital for the required three days, I drove my butt to the hospital and home from the hospital and then I took care of myself 100% when I got home. If you don't have kids that need a parent around, you really don't need your husband. If you're leery about driving yourself home, you can have a friend pick you up from the hospital and take you home. Physically you do not need anyone to do this surgery, although I imagine emotionally having your husband there would be nice. If I was you I would tell my husband to stay with his mother and do exactly what I did, except maybe with the exclusion of having a friend drive you home. If you want surgery, get surgery and get it on the date you have planned. Imagine how awesome your husband will think you are when he finds out you are fully capable of handling this entirely on your own...I bet he comes running right home to you and you don't have to play the needy card once.

    Scared!!!

I had my surgery in April of 2006. I had my gallbladder out in October of 2006, and a hysterectomy in March of 2007. In that time I lost 86lbs. I have not lost any weight since November of 2007. I have been complaining to my doctor since that time. He just kept giving me fills. I usually feel the restriction for about 2-3 weeks then I lose it. I also told my doctor this. He responded with joining a support group (thats why I'm on this site-by the way its been very helpful reading about all of you-THANKS) My doctor also said to go to a nutrictionist-which I did. Still no weight loss and NO restriction. I can eat a whole sandwhich ,2-3 slices of pizza, I can eat all day long, like before the surgery, I've already gained 10lbs. back. I have an appointment with my Doctor on April 4th. He is going to pull my fills out (I have 3.8 in a 4CC band) to see how much is in there and then he said we will take it from there. But I have to admit I am terrified!! Has anyone lost their restriction? Talk to me please! Is this as good as it gets for me-Am I done with the band-I am still about 100lbs over weight.:confused::crying::confused:

    Pills

You won't have any problems with small pills, even right after surgery. I moved back to non-gummy Vitamins about 12 weeks out and have done fine. What I don't do any more is take several pills at a time (I used to gulp down a Vitamin, allergy and PPI at one time). Sent from my iPad using VST
  25. I am going back to college soon as a sophomore, living in the dorms. I am an RA on campus and have my own room. I will have three weeks after surgery to recover and get back to everyday living at school. BUT we are not allowed to have our own microwave, stove, oven, etc. it is going to be incredibly hard for me to make the healthy foods I am supposed to be eating. What am I supposed to do?! Does anyone else have/had this problem? What did you do? I am very afraid I will be stuck and not have the option I would at home. please help!
