    Regained after GS

This seems like sensible advice. With respect to some people giving advice that are still only 5 or 6 months post-op (like me), telling someone that is 7 years post op to drop down to 800 calories a day is not good advice and it's not reasonable. It's easy to say that when you have lots of restriction. I am 5 months out and I couldn't live on 800 calories at this point--no f--ing way!!! I am eating at least 1500 a day, but I am eating healthy and I am working out 2 hours a day. It's working well for me and I am pretty much where I want to be in terms of weight and health. However, I know that if I am not careful I could end up back where I was before surgery and I would want to get back to where I am now by any means necessary. As for the pouch reset, I guess it can't hurt. However, there's no evidence that the so-called "pouch reset" actually does anything to reset your "pouch"--which we don't even have since that is a RNY thing. Also, to say it's OP's fault for not following the guidelines after 7 years is very unfair. Sh!t happens!!! 7 years is a long time and any of us can end up in OP's position. The fact is the VSG is great, but it's not enough for everyone. There are other procedures that may be better for OP and that's for her and her doctor to discuss. Revision exists because a high percentage of bariatric patients regain for lots of different reasons.
  2. This is a really solid article I came across today. It feels pretty universal that by about month 7-ish, our experience with our tool starts to shift and become a bit more challenging--for a variety of reasons. And one thing I certainly noticed was the larger capacity. Yikes! It's enough to send fear down my spine. This article is by the OAC (Obesity Action Coalition) and just very very good information for all of you struggling! https://www.obesityaction.org/community/article-library/bariatric-surgery-what-to-eat-when-the-honeymoon-wears-off/?fbclid=IwAR3nOMFaPpF2bt33btVcOt2E1wg2ImQbm_xKQFyLogCMNK7A2gi2SWlmJSo Has you honeymoon period started to wain or has it ended? Can you pinpoint at what month that happened?

    ❤ MAY 2019 CHALLENGE❤

#21. Visited my PCP yesterday, partly check-up, partly to discuss my I felt rotten treatment by those NP at OSU last Wednesday. He agrees I have not gone "wacky woo" so don't have To go out beating bushes to find a psychologist with Bariatric experience, thought it sounded dumb to be told to go bother my County Mental Health organization, shoot I'm not any risk to anyone else, and myself if I cakeep from starving to death because I'm not much interested in eating, hard to build up desire when you know 7 out of 10 times Precious Pouch is going to Reflux Puke it right back up! I've made a listofthings she WILL accept, if I don't stray too far from That, we get along fine. Just had a cup of decaf Tetley tea, a little stevia in it, life is bitter enough to go without some sort of sweetening to it! He says my latest ❤ scan turned out wonderful well, except for my murmer which must be functional because nothing abnormal showed up. Pointed out I have lost 37 pound since LateFebruary/ Early March. Surprised but pleased with that amount, going to give me a consult with local gastroenterologist, got some minor blips I think should be checked out, if I can't get past those obstructionist 2 N.P. to get to Dr Needleman, my surgeon, or Dr Noria, his Junior Partner, who does ALL my endoscopies, I will ask Bennie Upchurch MD here in town, should be callling today with an appointment time, if they don't within the next couple hours I will call them myself. Squeaky Wheels get greased sooner than ones that stay in one place. So in a way I am making lists, one of questions to ask him, one to use when I report in to Roy, my dietician, and another to ask Valerie, the senior NP at Needleman's office, rather his right- hand woman, mucho smarter than Thing#1,and Thing#2 that I encountered last week! Drat their little warped minds! Will it do any good? IDK but what do I have to lose by doing it?
  5. Hello! I am a 2x kidney transplant recipient, the latest transplant being done November 2016. My kidney and I have been stable with a creatinine of around 1.4. About 6 months before the transplant I had a Nissen Fundoplication (GERD surgery) because of a hiatal hernia and it got to the point that drinking water hurt my stomach severely. The NF worked and the GERD went away until earlier this year. Now the GERD is back with a vengeance because I have ANOTHER hiatal hernia! My bariatric surgeon has recommended I have a RnY gastric bypass to get rid of the GERD permanently and possibly lower my blood pressure and cholesterol which are currently controlled by medications. I am a regular runner and weightlifter, but I am perpetually about 30-40 lbs overweight with a BMI of 35, and lately I have been having a lot of pain in my lower back, hips and lower legs. So, he thinks its a good idea for weight loss for me as well. Are there any transplant recipients here that had a gastric bypass AFTER transplantation? How did you fare? Any regrets? Any problems?
  6. Hey is there anyone else out there who Can't eat an Whole Protein bar at one sitting, have break it down into 3 pieces, is 160-190 calories at a time too much for my Bariatric baby pouch to handle? I don't want to risk any more chances to Puke myself empty!

    December 2018 Sleevers!

I am glad you guys have updated. My weight loss at this point has been so so slow and I have been so worried that I have done something wrong? From what I am reading it seems to be the norm? I do need to get better on track though as my bariatric doctor wants me to be at 180 in July or they will give me some medication to help me lose more as the goal is to do a incisional hernia repair at my belly button without mesh and that's the weight they would like me at. With the weight loss and having this fist size hernia it doesn't look like I have lost as my belly lump looks so gross. So guys thanks for updating and normalizing things for the rest of us! I am not able to do weight training per I can't pick up more then 25 lbs per hernia and then I am still recovering from a a shoulder surgery and not allowed to pick up anything over 10 lbs with that arm and so all these limitations on exercise is not helping. I am walking almost everyday. My biggest problem is my saboteurs and the carbs they keep trying to temp me with as I have learned carbs go down real easy on the sleeve.
  8. I saw her every month for six months. And I couldn't miss a month or the insurance 6-month clock would reset to zero. So don't miss an appointment, even if you have a gain! I also took a seminar. And now post-op, I still see her every month because she facilitates the local support group I attend. I love her. She is so real and down to earth and provides a touchstone and accountability for me. And she works within my comfort zone for foods. I encourage you to find a bariatric RD whom you trust and with whom you can build a solid "forever" relationship with!
  9. I only met mine at the preoperative class I was required to take. She does come to the monthly bariatric support group too but I don't see her on a one to one basis.
  10. Oh and I misspoke about the weight loss timing, it was 8.5 months not years. And I have the Basal Metabolism of a Sick Sea Snail, your get v up and go just went over the years. My body left to it's own devices , and many years I did that, liked Me FAT, saw nothin wrong with me looking like Bip The Michelin Mans Twin Sister. Hey Frustr8, we have been steady friends over 70+ yearrs, these are your Retirement years, retire from living, stay say in that Easy Chair with a Bag of Snack Food. So I had to do an "End-Around" maneuver worthy of the NFL, to get past its defenses. Oh as I tried to lose some pre-surg weight, I opted for cleaner healthier changes but I was throwing down frequent feedings, Body didn't suspect a thing, and I had been seeking a Bariatric Solution for over 3 tears,so Body thought this was a phase I was going through, got quite a shock when I had my RNY last September, got its revenge by structuring my pouch and giving me jejunal ulcers. Well I have been in this fight since last October, it should resolve by late summer, been on anti- nausea meds(Zofran) a strong PPI(Dexilent) and an ulcer-healer (Carafate) along with all my other meds,Magnesium , prenatal vitamin(because it does have iron, folate and all those vitamin goodies)Wellbutrin ( to keep my depression at a mild state) liquid calcium citrate, brand name Wellesse, get it at Wal-Mart, Additional Vitamin D, I live in Ohio and don't often get outside, some meds make me sun- sensitive, and at very best summer I burn, blister and peel, by August or Labor Day I may have a pale tan, best you can hope for a Celtic heritage with Strawberry Blonde hair, okay okay Red-Gold, and I take an additional iron pill called Ferrocite, it's ferrous fumerate, an iron salt even my pouch and intestine can assimilate. But I had to have an Iron INFUSION in March because I was that anemic. But I am hopeful my next labs are better, if not another one in June before my next endoscopy, this EGJ should tell the story, if no better or just the same --surgical intervention is coming , don't know exactly what, but I was told that after my last one in April. My guess is removal of ulcer-ridden section of small intestine, and then re-anastomosis aka rejoining back together healthier tissue. I Am very certain, they won't do anything to Precious Pouch, she looks pretty sweet to the "scopers" thought I was patent, that means open enough that food can pass through and into the s.I., might have been okay that day, but she has tightened up again, still on protein shakes, highly pureed things, she does not like meat, Greek yogurt or cottage cheese, makes for a tedious time, but I still have Soup, broths,no-calorie fluids, And although I am so special I stink, I am. relatively health, clinic says I look good, I still believe I look like roadkill, lovely roadkill, but there I be. Have lost my Hubba-heiny, legs are more shapely, my garbage gut skin is loose and bumpy, I have a scrawny neck like a turtle, the high cheekbones from the Native tribe Daddy's family denies, look in my scrapbooks, every generation it looks stronger, My great-great grandfather was a dead ringer for Iron Eyes Cody the actor, if you were nearly as old as me you would know he was the Indian who stood crying at the polluted things we have done to Mother Earth in the name of progress. Actually asked Aunt Minnie, Daddy's sister, she drew up to her full 5ft4in and announced "We Never Discuss That!" well Yipes can't blame a girl for asking. Do you have Wikipedia on your Smartphone or computer? Go to Peoria Indian tribe or people, the lady pictured there is the spitting image of Aunt Minnie! Yes I look Celtic, fair, taller than even my uncles, but they are dark- haired, mostly straight, few of them now have permanents, medium complections, over heard a discussion of the older generatio one day. Relative#1 Are you sure she's ours? She sure don't look like us! Relative#2 Well Cliff says she's his, maybe she favors that mother of hers. Only thing I can figure out. But Karma is a broad with a warped sense of humor, except for being another color scheme, now that I have lost so much weight I am the spitting image of my Paternal Grandmother, high cheekbones and all. Probably she and my own Mama are both whirling in their graves, luckily 30 miles apart, They did not get along all that well! So who or what I look like at my goal of 175? That just remains to be seen. Hang around a while if you like, I have someone tell me how paste a picture on here, maybe I will get the courage to try that!

yep - it meets all the recommendations of the American Society of Bariatric & Metabolic Surgeons (ASBMS). I have to take it twice a day, though (some bariatric formulated ones you only have to take once a day, I think...)

    ***Qustions for Sleevers***

I would love your feedback. Please give the date you had surgery and State or country you had the procedure done: June 2014 Idaho Questions for sleeves: Do you feel you were given enough information on this procedure pre op and post op? I had my pre op seminar. They were excellent in going over all the type of surgeries. The positives and down sides of each. My surgeon and I went over which surgeries would fit my medical issues best. Did they explain that you will still feel real and head hunger with any surgery procedure? Or tell you hunger go’s away? I was told real and head hunger would still happen. That it would be less than pre op. Did they give you clear instructions on how to work your plan? Yes, I had a pre op class, instructions in writing sent home, one on ones with my dietitian in the first months. Cooking class and a behavior change class. Was the psych evaluation just a hoop to jump through? Would you have benefited doing more therapy before surgery? It was just a hoop. Not much depth in the questions. It honestly felt like a step to release the surgeon from liability. I did some weight loss related counseling during the process it was helpful. Were your follow up appointments with your surgeons and dietician helpful? No I was weighed and told I was doing great and sent on my way. Three appointments the first year and one every year to track success rates. I stopped going my third year. Did you understand that you can gain weight back? Did they help with a list of instructions and things to do and not to do and to contact them if you had any issues? Yes, I was given the information that this is a tool and I had to do the work. If you had regained or other issues, did you contact your team and were they helpful? I contacted them about some diet issues. They were not helpful. They did not know how to address someone who had a higher fitness level. They would not go off the bariatric cookie cutter instructions. The result was I was not healthy, I burnt muscle and my blood sugar was low (type one diabetic)

    December 2018 Sleevers!

Hey guys. Just checking in on my fellow December 2018 sleavers. I am chugging along on my weight loss journey. I am down. I was a low BMI patient so I lost most of my excess weight in the first 2.5 months post-op. Since the end of March, it's been slow going with the scale. I have only lost about 7 pounds since March 7, but I did lose about 1.5% off my body fat 1.5" off my waist since. I am pretty happy with where things are at the moment. I would like to lose another 5-10 pounds--but that would only be to give me a little cushion against regain (maybe?). I still have a healthy appetite, but nothing like I did before surgery. That said, I probably eat more than most bariatric patients at this point--but I am very careful about what I eat. I don't cheat at all--not even a little bit. Yesterday was a tough challenge. My daughter had her 8th birthday party yesterday and we served pizza and an ice cream cake from cold stone creamery (dark chocolate fudge and salted caramel ice cream with angel food cake. I realize that it's very easy to fall off the wagon--it's how ended up starting to regain after every diet I was on before in my life. I can't have "just a little bite of this" or "a taste of that". Sure, I could a few times, but one little bite can become just a little piece and escalates from there. Even though I am thin and in really good shape right now, I am never going to be a "thin person" like someone that is naturally thin his/her whole life. The potential for me to become heavy again is always going to be there. So, I am going to always have to be that much stricter with my diet and exercise. So, I came up with a plan to deal with my daughter's party. First, I made sure to eat before her party something healthy (salad with grilled chicken and bolthouse low carb/low cal dressing) and I promised myself a yummy snack after the party (pumpkin seeds, pecans and a piece of ChocZero dark chocolate (very yummy)). It may not be as exciting as ice cream cake, but it's still yummy to me. I was able to get through the party without taking even the tiniest bite of anything. You have to have a plan and stick with it to make this process successful. As an added bonus, I felt no guilt today.

Optisource post bariatric surgery chewables from Walgreens. Also biotin, B-12, Calcium citrate, D3. I like the Optisource. Some people say that are chalky, but I don't get that sensation. I tried the well known brand of chewable multi and calcium - like little caramel squares, but they were too sweet, too flavorful, and way too much like candy. It really triggered a desire for sweets which was dangerous for me. I have not had my 6 month blood draw yet, however, so that will really tell the story about how good my vitamins are (and my diet).

I take fusion - try a different flavor maybe?- i have tropical which is okay adn mixed berry which is mehhh--but they're not that bad. I use the chewy calcium by bariatric advantage. I also tried procare capsule and took it mid day and got so sick....so I will switch to those in a few weeks and try them at night.

All the chewables I tried were nasty. I was taking ProCare Now capsules - you only need 1 and if I take it at bedtime with a small snack the nausea is minimal. I'm about out of ProCare and I'm switching to Bariatric Pal One because of the better pricing. I take my chewy calciums at breakfast lunch and dinner.

What to have at home after surgery?

only my opinion, I would use a scale in your first months. After you learn portion sizes, calories/macros, and real food plan, you can rely less on a scale. My fitnesspal or baritastic. Food logging has been eye opening and the best tool to get me to goal and maintaining. There are bariatric websites for recipes. Freeze leftovers in small portions for easy quick meals.

    Anyone else use flinstones vitamins?

Flintstones are still recommended by some bariatric surgeons, but they aren't the best option. The American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgeons does not recommend multivitamins that are formulated for children. Those formulated specifically for bariatric patients are a good choice, but if you want a standard, readily available vitamin, a lot of bariatric patients have good luck with Centrum (or a generic equivalent), too. Any multi that meets the ASMBS requirements is fine: https://asmbs.org/app/uploads/2008/09/ASMBS-Nutritional-Guidelines-2016-Update.pdf

Made Eggplant Parm tonight, yeah the Good Kind, by the time it was done Tomkitten had fallen asleep, my pouch hasn't felt well since last Wednesday, tried to call my Bariatric Clinic , I had been vomiting repeatedly, only to be told I needed Mental Health consulting, still cannot understand why she was taking such a cruel attitude, made me feel like I had gone wacky-woo or something. Seeing my primary care tomorrow afternoon, maybe I need to see our new local gastroenterologist if. those nurses have such a poor opinion of me. I am not making things up and I sure am not making myself vomit for attention. Truthfully I am Tired of not keeping things down. So the whole casserole is going into the fridge now that it is well cooled down. Maybe tomorrow he will eat some.
  22. I had always heard that flinstone vitamins are not the best for bariatric folks. I take an intranasel b12 once a week, 2 multivitamins a day, 2 calcium a day, 2 biotin (for hair loss) a day, and 1 iron (2 hours away from the calcium). If you get your bloodwork done and everything looks good, keep doing what you’re doing. Always listen to your doctor and don’t skip your vitamins!

    Weight gain after surgery

Bariatric Pal Store has a grouping of vitamins just for Bypassers. I usually have prescription and purchase the rest at Wally World.
  24. FluffySaysForkIt!

    Anyone else use flinstones vitamins?

Flintstones vitamins are not really optimal for bariatric patients. Try looking in the store here on this site or online for vitamins formulated for people who have had weight loss surgery. Some are once a day, some are two or more- depending on the formula. You will also need calcium citrate for sure and possibly others depending on the vitamin you select and your own personal needs. Talk to your surgeon for specifics on your case. Good Luck!

    Insurance Approval

I have BCBS of IL with my school district as a high school teacher. There was no insurance requirement to wait any set number of months. However, my program requires 3 months of visits with surgeon, nutritionist, other dr releases, and medical exams. I started this process in Feburary with the bariatric seminar and have my final appointment on June 2. I have been scheduled for surgery either June 26 or July 2, depending on insurance approval.
