No, I don't want no SCALE
NightPilgrim replied to NightPilgrim's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I knew this was going to happen... So after this discussion, I bought my scale. Was happy to discover 11 pounds lost in 11 days since surgery which blew my mind. Then the next day, another 2.5 pounds lost overnight. Wow but clearly unsustainable. Then today, (so much for only weekly weighing) I find I've gained 0.5 pounds since yesterday!! I know its only half a pound but suddenly am thinking...did I do something wrong? is this a flag? I'm 13 days out from surgery. I'm still only on full liquids and my diet is broth, soup (not cream soup, just regular ole veg soup), greek yogurt, some unsweetened apple sauce, 1 protein shake, and yesterday I also had 3x of these bariatric pal store protein products (1 soup , 1 fruit drink, 1 hot chocolate). Oh and a sh*t ton of water. Thats the only thing I did differently to the other days when maybe I only had 1 or 2 of the store bought protein products. I thought they would be helpful in getting protein in and staving off hunger... Realize that I now sound like the nutso saying this over half a pound... but the whole point of going down the scale route was to "listen to my body" to stay on track. Now I just want to make sure I understand what it's telling me. I keep repeating to myself... "This is a marathon not a sprint. Marathon not a sprint." -
Yogurt options pre-op
MelShea replied to BlessedMomma's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I don't like chunky fruit or slimey fruit in my yogurts so greek has been hard for me. So far the only one I like is the Yoplait 100 calorie protein greek yogurt. That's going to get boring fast. -

If it is because the texture is too thick, you can add just a bit of water and stir it well. It turns out to be just like regular yogurt consistency. Sent from my SM-G900T using BariatricPal mobile app -

I didn't like Greek yogurt either, until I did what my support group suggested. I got plain Greek yogurt with the lowest sugar content, also got sugar free Jam. I mix a spoon full of the jam into the yogurt, then I add a spoon or two of splenda (it wasn't sweet enough for me with just the jam). Once mixed, it taste like any other non-Greek (regular) yogurt. Very low in carbs, because you minimize the sugar. My group also suggested another Greek yogurt flavor by also getting plain and adding a spoon full of creamy low sugar peanut butter. It adds protein and also limits the sugar. Also, if it isn't sweet enough you can add splenda. At work, and at home I keep a the big baking bag of splenda (store the splenda in a tupperware container). EDIT: The added sweetness masks the tart associated with Greek yogurt. -

I used to hate Greek but have come to love it now. The Oikos Triple Zeros are really good. Chobani makes some great ones as well. You may want to consider some of the Greek whipped yogurts. Dannon has one that is only 80 calories (they call it their Light & Fit Greek Mousse). -

I don't like it either, due to the texture, but I did like the triple oikos Greek yogurt, by Dannon maybe??, ok. It was better than any others, if you stick with Greek -
I'm allowed to have yogurt during my preop diet. The nutritionist recommended Greek yogurt, I purchased it but can not stomach the taste! Did anyone eat regular low fat yogurt? If so what brand?

I've used a little tumeric and cumin in my plain yogurt & I've used the tumeric in my scrambled egg. I like both Indian and Middle Eastern flavors though.

Had my surgery May 1st as well. When I eat something like jello or yogurt I can feel when it hits my stomach. Same with my meds I have to swallow. I did feel a little pain in my back on day 2 (don't remember most of day 1. Ended up in ICU and have only bits and pieces of memory until after 5pm). Since I've been home the main pain I experience is from my incisions. Especially the largest one. The heating pad has been a life saver. It's like it calms my angry muscles so I can sleep a little longer. And helps the has pains. I haven't had many yet but I'm sure they're coming. My only other problem is constipation. No BM since Saturday so I'm starting to feel a bit uncomfortable in that sense. Hope that pain improves and if it concerns you, just call your surgeon and ask. Mine told me that if I feel any pains that I don't think are normal for this to call them right away.

Sleeve, Cholecystitis, Regret!
1poundatatime replied to Chris Lee's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You've lots 22 lbs in a month! That is fantastic! You should be pleased and proud of your progress! With the additional surgery, it's bound to take you longer to start feeling yourself again. You've had a rough go of it, but it's going to getting better from here on out. Honestly, at 6 weeks out, I feel completely back to normal - except I can't eat very much lol As for protein replacements, I agree they get old fast! I got to a point where the thought of drinking them made me feel sick. However, your protein intake is so incredibly important! How are you doing on your protein targets? (and fluid for that matter, dehydration will make you feel terrible too). If you aren't reaching them, are you at least getting closer every day? Aim for progress. When I quit the protein powders, I had to be extra diligent about what I chose to eat. Literally every single bit needs to be as nutritious as possible. Cottage cheese and greek yogurt were my go-to snacks. Moist scrambled egg, tuna salad, avocado (for the good fats) made up most meals. Refried beans with a bit of melted cheese were nice. Hang in there. It gets better -
Dental Health after Sleeve Surgery
Berry78 replied to aquarius1234's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
OMG, thanks for the belly laugh! I needed that! But, everything you say is true! I just read an article yesterday that said about 1/3 of female bariatric patients, and 2/3 of male patients don't even consume the RDA of protein. That # is something like 46g for women and 60g for men. I was dumbfounded, but maybe I shouldn't have been. A bariatric surgeon was speaking at a support group I attended. I mentioned I couldn't stomach the protein shakes the 2nd week out of surgery, but I got my 70g of protein in anyway. His jaw dropped and he exclaimed "HOW?!". So funny.. Liquid yogurt, milk, broth, kefir. (The kefir has 40 grams in a 16oz bottle). My vitamins also have 10g. No problemo! Of course if someone couldn't tolerate dairy, that is a whole different story. And yes, I did get plenty of carbs, but that early out I don't think it is a problem. The body is trying to heal, and it can't do that if it is starving. As my diet advances, I've been shifting the macros. -
Unrealistic expectations?
OutsideMatchInside replied to New Me 31317's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
@New Me 31317 Drop the yogurt and the cottage cheese. Not enough protein, and too many milk carbs. Have another shake mid morning. I caution you against adding any nut butters back into your diet. When you are healing they are relatively harmless, but long term they are super calorie dense, easy to snack on and match or exceed carbs to protein. Bad long term choice. Whole nut when you we cleared for them are a better option. Protein shakes count as fluids. I would have a shake for breakfast, one for a mid morning snack, lunch meat or whatever for lunch, another shake in the afternoon, and whatever for dinner. -
Unrealistic expectations?
New Me 31317 replied to New Me 31317's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Thank you. I have considered the fact that I might need more calories but I am not sure how to fit it in! On my drive to work, I have a protein shake. Around nine I have some yogurt. The lunch time I have some sliced turkey and around three I have a piece of cheese. And then for dinner I have some lean protein (no more than 2 ounces) Not sure I can get any more than that....also I'm not sure what else to eat, I've been pretty much stuck on yogurt cottage cheese lunch meat and tuna. -
April Sleevers, What Changes Have You Noticed?
Sleeved3.29.17 replied to tlh4life's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was sleeved March 29, 2017. I've lost 31 pounds since my preop diet started March 18th. Surgery day I was already down 12 though, so I have lost 19 since surgery. I lost a pound a day every day for the first 2 weeks and then kinda hit a stall where I lose a pound every few days or not at all. I went to the gym after two weeks and I felt like ever since I started working out, my fat is turning into muscle and I'm not losing weight. I can't complain because I am on the furthest hole in my belts though! LOL. I tried on my favorite skinny jeans that I haven't worn in about 8 months, so when they fit, I smiled. I feel the opposite as you all because I've been sleeping more than ever lately. I'll go to bed at 10:30 rather than my usual 1am and still wake up at the same time. I wonder if that'll get back to normal? I'm officially off short term restrictions which is nice but I still eat a mix: cottage cheese, yogurt, mashed potatoes, and as much meat as I can. I miss the idea of a sandwich sometimes, but not enough to let it bring me down. The only thing I am disappointed in is that I can barely drink water and I love water. It's the hardest part. -
So, I'm curious. After surgery, when do you generally see the weight loss start up? 1 week after? 2 weeks? I'm not sure if I'm not losing because of barely getting nutrients in, the fact that there's probably still IV fluids in me or if it's the swelling. All I'm eating are broth, Jello and popsicles. I did eat a little bit of Greek yogurt today and drank a little medicine cup full of a Protein shake.

What do you eat? In semi solid phase?
JupiterinVirgo replied to midia's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Yogurt, cottage cheese, smashed avocado, I also was drinking a lot of tea with raw honey and cinnamon. Raw honey is so healthy for you even though it has sugar. I still use raw honey with cinnamon anytime my stomach is acting up and it seems to do the trick! At three weeks I was also eating soft tuna, soft scrambled eggs, and generally anything high protein that was very moist and did not upset my stomach. -
A "food" that has no fat, no protein, and no carbs? What is this, the Genepro of mayo's? Honestly it does not sound like food at all. They are either liars or they are making a batch of chemicals and calling it a condiment. I don't usually get worked up about "fake foods", but even I would avoid that. My personal experience has been that plain greek yogurt is the easiest substitute for mayo. I can make a ranch dip out of it, tuna or chicken salad... heck I have replaced sour cream and mayo both with plain yogurt. That being said, if you are really craving honest to goodness mayo, I say try your hand at making your own. It's a lot easier than you think. Though once you see that it is just eggs and oil, it may not be as appealing.

Feeling paranoid about feeling hungry
darnlochnessmonster posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Today I am 6 days post-op. For the previous 5 days I haven't had any real desire to eat or drink anything. No real appeal in eating, and in some cases, thinking about foods made me feel a little queasy. Today - I feel hungry. I had a 5.3oz yogurt for breakfast (took about 90 minutes to eat, I think from about 7:30 to 9am). It is not just after 10:30 and my tummy and mouth say "eat!" Logically, I know that I have only consumed 120 calories today and I need to continue to eat and sip small amounts to heal but a part of me is thinking "This is how it starts all over again. You're hungry all the time. You won't stop eating. You'll gain every ounce back and THIS WAS FOR NOTHING." This paranoia is compounded by the fact that I had, what I believe, was my first case of extremely mild dumping syndrome. I had been having trouble finding any drinks appealing and thought a very watered down bit of pineapple juice would do the trick - I was right. I had about 1/2 cup pineapple juice to 2 cups water over the course of a few hours. FOr those who don't know, a serving of pineapple juice can exceed 30 grams of sugar. I expect I may have had about 10. I've now become obsessed with the idea that my pineapple juice has reawakened the sugar demon and all is lost. I know that sounds incredibly dramatic, but I've noticed over the last few days that these kinds of fears keep sprouting up. I can't shake this fear that this isn't a fresh start, just a pit stop on the same ol', same ol. Ugh. Anyone else dealing with similar feelings? How did you cope? -
Ambien, insomnia, sleep eating
beezy8 replied to TheBearguy8's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Don't be afraid. Take it as it comes. It is a slow process, healing and learning the new way of living and eating. You sound prepared. I, too, need Ambien for chronic insomnia, and occasionally have sleep eating. I'm 17 months post-op, and have had a few episodes, but not done anything extreme. Something about Ambien makes some of us "hungry". Have safe foods in your kitchen. Try to have those tempters gone. I find that taking less than a whole dose keeps the sleep-eating at bay most of the time. For me, it is a fine balance between enough med to sleep, and not so much to cause me to eat. I keep protein bars bedside. Early on, you might want to keep a protein shake ready in the fridge. Sometimes having protein before bed helps, me, too. Yogurt, cheese sticks, peanut butter, chicken (later as you can eat it). You will find what you like. Food still tastes good, so meals are enjoyable - just eat the right size and follow your plan. The plan is for a good reason, you will have foods added regularly, based on what the experts have learned by studying those who have gone before us. Use your nutritionist and team, they are there for you. Have a great journey. It gets better every day. I had my surgery 12/31/16, at age 70. Lost almost 1/3 of my body weight, over 60 pounds! I have a few pounds to get to my goal weight, but I'm so much healthier and fitter than before, I'm happy. -
Everything I drink makes my stomach hurt.
darnlochnessmonster replied to JRK81's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I've been getting what I would call "pre-headaches", that feeling of almost-wooziness where you know it could turn into pain. I've learned that's my sign I'm not eating/drinking enough. The first day or two I managed to have 2 protein shakes each day, maybe a glass of Crystal light. DEFINITELY not enough. In the next few days it would be more like 1 shake, 1 yogurt, 1 juice. I'm still struggling really, really hard to get enough nutrients to avoid the "pass out" feeling. Maybe this is happening for you too? Do you think you're getting enough fluids? -
3 Days Post-Op, My Experience
Finding_Stacy replied to darnlochnessmonster's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My pureed plan is whatever what was on the hospital menu for pureed diets that they gave me. For instance, they have scrambled eggs on the menu, so even though it's not a pureed food it's allowable. I try to eat a scrambled egg every morning but usually can only eat a quarter of it. I've been eating a 1/4 cup of Oikos vanilla greek yogurt (in the black container). I have the sugar free popsicles and sugar free pudding but haven't really eaten them. I've been getting in a shake and a half everyday of the premier protein shakes, but it's work. On surgery day I was 362, and today, I am 345.0 exactly. That's 17 pounds in one week! 32 pounds since 4/15. Mind boggling. For the first time I have little ankles and my feet aren't swollen. My body is finally able to heal itself and it's happening for me and for you -
Thanks for the support guys! I made it to 10 days with the assistance of a teeny spoonful of low fat greek yogurt when I was feeling at my most miserable. Feeling pleased that I pretty much stuck to the instructions and know that it has helped with my mindset for the future. Full liquids is going to feel like a total luxury now!
