Armygirl, are u on total liquids? Im allowed yogurt, cottage cheese and veggies and soups. All fat free. If u want sum ideas to mix it up lmk. I also do the three protein shakes a day -
I'm four months out and just started eating cereal with milk on occasion. I try to get at least 10-15 grams of protein at breakfast, and cereal just didn't fit with that plan until now. I eat Kashi Go Lean which has 13 grams of protein per cup (though I usually only have 1/2-2/3 cup at a time with the same amount of skim milk). I let it sit for a few minutes so it is not so crunchy. It is also good when added to non-fat, vanilla or plain greek yogurt.

I had the Gastric Sleeve procedure done almost a month ago. I've had no issues with the Full Liquid Diet stage, but when it came to transitioning to purees, it felt as though my stomach wasn't happy. It was suggested that it could have been the foods I was eating (too acidic, diary, etc) or that they weren't pureed enough. Other suggestions were that I wasn't eating slow enough. But sometimes, as soon as I took one bite my stomach would immediately start gurgling or I'd get the instant pain of acid reflux/heartburn. I am supposed to start "Soft Solids" on Saturday, but I fear with the trouble I faced with the purees...that I might need an extra week. I've had no issues with eating yogurt, jello, pudding, or soup (which is what I've tried to stick with since I know how my body will react). But with anything else I've tried, it is either the immediate gurgling or acid reflux/heartburn feeling. Is this something commonly experienced or something I should inform my doctor about? Kay_G_B

What was the first food you ate when allowed soft foods?
FatPharm replied to FatPharm's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I did keto for a long time pre-op and even before I thought about bariatric surgery. My program is different, I guess, in that we don't do purees or full liquids and move onto soft foods like cottage cheese and yogurt, etc. on day 10. We are allowed chicken salad, even. She said to start with Greek yogurt, which I did. -
What was the first food you ate when allowed soft foods?

I want refried beans badly. I'm allowed to start my soft foods today. Will have Greek yogurt for breakfast. Not really wanting that for all 3 "meals," I don't think. -

I was advised by the nutritionist to start with Greek yogurt. My program doesn't do purees at all. Just clear liquid/protein shakes straight to stage 2 soft food with 3 "meals" a day. What was you first soft food and how did you do with it? Did it go down well? -

I'm 2+ years out. I've lost 95% of my excess weight. I have not had plastics - which would account for that last 5%. I eat a high protein, low carb diet and exercise 7 days a week. I eat roughly 1500 calories a day. I exercise at least 1 hour each day. A typical day is: Morning - coffee - black, greek yogurt (Skyr Icelandic provisions), 2 tablespoons of granola Mid morning - protein shake (1 cup fairlife skim milk, 1 scoop protein, handful frozen fruit in blender) Lunch - 3-5 ounces of chicken/turkey/beef, 2 cups of green salad mix, 1 tablespoon balsamic dressing mid afternoon - 2-3 ounces cheddar or other hard cheese Dinner - 3-5 ounces meat, salad or green veg and 1/4 c of a starch. I have had to increase my carbs to about 110 g daily due to my exercise load. I fence (en garde) 6-8 hours a week, do Cross Fit 3 hours a week and pilates and strength training another 1-3 hours a week. I eat about 110 g protein daily. I eat protein first. I drink close to a gallon of water a day. If I want a glass of wine or a cocktail, I have one. At my high point, I was over 300. I now sit around 152 with 29% bodyfat. I can deadlift 250 pounds and squat 235. I'm nationally ranked as a fencer in my age group. How well you do it up to you and your commitment to it. I've gone from a size 24 to a size 6. -
Please Help Me, I Think I'm The Only One That Has Failed This Surgery
Supersweetums replied to loveit1222's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Most greek yogurts have fairly equal protein levels. I eat a 2% fat one, you can also get 0% and you can get higher. The key is to stay away from the flavored ones. Typically, they are sweetened with sugar and higher in calories and carbs. I buy plain and sweeten it myself with sugar free syrups (torani, davinci) and a little liquid stevia. You are early out, take this time to learn new ways of eating. I am a firm believer that if you do not change anything, you will not be successful in the long term. However, you have to make changes you can live with for a lifetime. Good Luck! -
Young Gastric Bypass Patients

Oh gosh .. PROTEIN.... Ugh! I hated HATED the protein. I was always being told I needed to get more protein in all the time. I struggled with that the whole time. I ate a lot of the same things... Scrambled egg, canned chicken, canned tuna, cream soups, refried beans, yogurt, I would make fruit smoothies with yogurt and put in protein powder... I sadly really never found any kind of protein shake I liked. They all taste terrible to me. ... I HOPE you have better luck than me. Since I was horrible with getting in all the protein I needed I lost a TON of hair when I hit my 3 months out. I had thin hair anyway.. So be careful. Just do your very best. This is my hair when I lost most of it... TERRIBLE .... Luckily it did grow back. -
anyone having feeling of regret after surgery
cajunsweetheart007 replied to toy27's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I will be 8 mths. post surgery on the 27th and I'm down 96 pounds. I am in a 12/14 depending on the cut and manufacturer. There are days when I can eat more than others. I don't snack a lot between meals. I have learned to read labels. I eat a lot of the Greek yogurt 90 cal. and the protein shakes 120 cal. I also rarely eat anything fried. I try to stick to green leafy vegetables, berries and fruit. My back doesn't hurt anymore and I have two ruptured disk. It's hard to swallow all the vitamin supplements, but I just suck it up and do it. I need them and that's that. I don't miss the bread, and I don't crave sweets. It's just trying to find a variety of food I can eat. One thing is for sure when I go to lunch with my co workers I am always taking the majority of the food home to my husband or to eat for dinner. I am looking at loosing another 36 pounds. I have days when I'm down, but the majority of the days are good and getting better as time goes on. You just half to remember that a piece of your body was taken out of you, and it's like having a loss. Also loosing the weight in and of its self is a loss. You had an excuse to hide behind (the weight). As you loose your weight you loose the ability to hide behind it. It's like your out there exposed. I liken it to a person who has been stripped of all their clothing, and they are standing in a room naked. Loosing this much weight is like being naked, your vulnerable, and looking for something to comfort you. That something use to be food. You have to find something that can replace the food, that doesn't have a negative connotation. -

You can make healthy choices with the food that is available stick to the fruit, and veggie tray for meats go for the chicken or lean turkey. You are the one that wants to make the changes! Ok there is nothing good about McDonalds, no matter what you choose! It is very difficult to get into a routine but you have to do it, buy some yogurt or boil some eggs for Breakfast, lunch deli meat like chicken and turkey with some green veggies and then dinner rotissery chicken again with some green veggies. Will you be crabby yes because you are detoxifying your body! So your fiancee will have to deal with it. Next you seem to be committed to do right so you will have to make some sacrifice, will you slide back and have something you shouldn't yes of course your human, just dust yourself off and get back on! You have to do this, you want to do this so you must do this. Come in here ask questions and vent that is what we are here for! We have also been where you are so we understand looking at that fountain chocolate and cake and crab cakes and well I better stop . Anyway just concentrate on the end result! Good luck! My nutritionist said that they usually recommend 70, but since I'm tall (5'10"), I have to shoot for 80 as well. I agree... it's hard! I try to choose cooking ingredients with the highest quantity of protein: chicken stock instead of broth, Greek yogurt instead of mayonnaise, milk instead of Water in Protein shakes, etc. I also eat a lot of protein-ey Snacks - cottage cheese, cheese sticks, Greek yogurt, Kozy Shack has a 100-cal pudding snack that has 5g of protein (and is very yummy)! I make it my goal to get to 80 every day without having to resort to shakes or supplements. Most days I succeed, but just barely! Good luck!

Liquids Post Op 5 Days
edpsych78 replied to Gelica's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yes, jncvt123, each day is different. Today I'm having a lot of cramping so I've had to cut back on the oatmeal, applesauce, yogurt, etc. and focus on the protein and liquids. The gas has been horrible today, too. Gas-x strips and lots of walking are helping. Last night watching TV with my family I was feeling hungry but realized it wasn't physical hunger...head hunger instead. That's a new thing for me so I'll be working on that for a while I'm sure. Hang in there -we've got this!!!!! -

Starting the process
Creekimp13 replied to Tysheena84's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
For me, eliminating all processed sugars and white flour...had an immediate impact on my weight loss. I lost like crazy just doing these two things. I still ate a ton of carbs, but I ate good whole carbs with dietary fiber...beans, potatos, chickpeas, nuts, whole grains, whole fruits and veggies....and stayed away from white bread, processed foods, stuff with added sugar and no fiber like juices and jellies. I also eliminated processed products with fats, fried stuff, and fatty meats. Learned to put low fat plain yogurt and salt and pepper on my baked potatoes....replaced butter and animal fat in cooking with extra virgin olive oil. Everyone has a different diet they prefer...I tend to follow Mediterannian or Mayo Clinic diet. Getting your steps is brilliant and will get your metabolism going like crazy. I started at 5000 steps a day and gradually increased in little baby steps to 12,000 a day. I get 20,000 some days now because I really enjoy walking and being active...but most days are 10 to 12,000 now. Being active will help you so much. Best wishes! You got this! -
Being a nurse with crazy hours
Starwarsandcupcakes replied to ynotiniowa's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Hey! I’m not a nurse but a monitor tech and work 12’s. Your best bet is loads of little things starting out- Greek yogurts, eggs and cheese, string cheese, taco meat, chili, etc. condiment or mini lunch containers are great. Take the time and walk away from the floor! You and your health are just as important as your patient. After all you’ve taken the steps to get to where you are now, don’t let others derail you by being unprepared for success when you come back. Also, water bottle at the hydration station and a phone timer to schedule breaks. -
I have mine set at 50/30/20 and avoid sugar like the plague. And heed her words on avoiding no or low fat products outside of dairy...that's usually a sugar trap, as she stated. If you are trying to save calories and focus on Protein, I hope you like fish! I don't eat beef. I eat some chicken (usually canned for chicken salads), a ton of fish (especially salmon) and a ton of broccoli, brussel sprouts and asparagus. Cottage cheese (Walmart full fat large curd is so yummy), light string cheese, yogurt (Walmart light), Isopure drinks and Premium Protein Drinks are all staples every day. I have a million bariatric recipes, but I am personally a repetitive eater....I eat the same things all the time. It's just easier that way and I always have a cheat (within reason, of course) on Sundays...mixing up the caloric intake to keep my metabolism guessing.

How Would I Know If My Sleeve Had A Leak?
Tdh80 replied to itsmeloca's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
2 years later and I still am having problems from my leak. After a year and a half of complaining about constantly throwing up and being told I was scared of food or I was eating too much (half of a yogurt container) or it was my head, I was sent for a CT scan with contrast which showed I had a superior mesenteric thrombosis which developed right around the same time as my surgery. They can tell this by how much larger the smaller two veins have become carrying the extra blood. I was put in Coumadin for 5 months with labs drawn almost everyday the entire time to have another CT scan at the 5 month mark to show no changes, it was ruled chronic and it is an occlusion. That 1st CT scan also showed what looked like a stricture in my sleeve. An egd showed it is not a stricture, it is a distal angulation, 90 degrees ive been told. Food, especially anything solid, gets in that angle and sits until I basically throw it up which I hate doing. From where the food sits in the angled part at the bottom of my stomach, the top part of my sleeve is severely enlarged. I'm not concerned about that, I want to be able to eat. I have had a few balloon dilation in an effort to widen the angle out so food does not have such an angle to pass over with no success. If I want to be fixed, I need another surgery my stomach will be sewn up the middle, pulled sideways at the angle, and sewed back sideways at that part instead of up and down. I'm very scared of that as it may have to be open surgery add the location of it and if it has to be converted to gastric bypass, it is more risky as I had a jtube in my intestines and that bowel would have to be resectioned before it could be reattached. My other opinions have told me that over stapling the suture line causes pressure to build which causes a leak, the stomach acid that had gotten into my abdomen causes severe trauma which resulted in the smv thrombosis, the pressure build up and distress in the stomach can affect the shape of the sleeve causing mine to form at angle. Make sure you are checked for everything that could possibly be wrong before you go home. -
3 week out.. Wondering mind....
Teachamy replied to tiffany81's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
No, no dumping. Sliming, yes, but no dump. And yes, sadly perhaps, you will be able to eat chips and frozen yogurt without any problems. (other than self-sabotage) -
You don't say whether or not you're hungry. That's the sign of needing a fill...or possibly just not eating what your body needs. A few ideas though... Your meal should allow you to be hunger free for about 4 hours. If it doesn't, perhaps a small protein snack mid-meal would help (an ounce of cheese, hardboiled egg, etc.) . Yogurt or Protein Drink is fine for Breakfast if it gets you through the morning. lunch and dinner, according to my surgeon, should be 3 oz of protein, 1/2 cup of vegies and 1/4 cup of starch (maybe and only if I'm still hungry). Record everything you put into your mouth in something like fitday.com. You'd be surprised how fast the calories add up with cheese and Soups. Once you know for sure how many calories you're eating, then you'll be better able to figure out why your weight loss has slowed. Don't expect major losses. One person I know only lost 3/4 of a lb per week. I only lose 1 lb per week and that's only if I stick to a 1200 calorie diet. Have enough days at 1600 calories and I don't lose anything. A lot will depend on your own metabolism. Some people see a faster weight loss when they exercise. That hasn't been my experience, although I do feel better. .

Surgery is getting closer.
Hiraeth replied to Kaylaseibert's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Why are you nervous? Are you nervous about the surgery, the diet, or both? The surgery was easier than I expected. My only challenges were the gas pains that lasted for almost 2 days and getting in enough liquid. My pre-op diet lasted for one week and was actually pretty easy. I didn't really feel miserable like some people say they felt. I made sure to drink at least 3 Protein shakes a day and eat about 2-3 light and fit yogurts a day. Also, drink plenty of fluids to keep yourself fuller longer. Good luck! -
I am 19 months post op, and I have to say the last couple of months have been extremely difficult food wise. I am pretty much ALWAYS feeling hungry and I am losing the battle on the nighttime munching and eating! The feeling is really acute at night when I am supposed to be going to bed, I try drinking water and waiting but that isn't working anymore. When I do cave and give in to the feeling I do try to stick with a high protein food and something that is healthy, yogurt or cheese and fruit, sometimes though this isn't enough. I just don't know what to do. I've had my labs done recently and they all came back normal except for my vitamin D (extremely deficient), and my para-thyroid hormone had dropped some but I am no where near deficient for that. I am just frustrated and stressing out about this. In the last few months I have regained about five pounds, which I know is normal but is not what I want to be doing. Does anyone have any tips or suggestions for how to beat the late night hunger monster?
