  1. I have got to have my band removed as it has seriously eroded. I have asked my surgeon about a revision and he says he might be able to do one to RNY or a Sleeve. Not knowing much about the Sleeve, I thought I had better look it up. I am amazed how many people on this site alone have revision to a Sleeve....something which still gives them no malabsorption. I have been dieting and struggling for 6 years with the band and now will put on even more weight waiting for the revised surgery....and the thought of restrictive only procedure just terrifies me....what if I fail this too. I would much prefer the RNY....but I look at alot of my fellow former bandsters and you all go for the Sleeve. Please explain this to me as I feel I am missing something. I know the Sleeve can be added on later to a DS but that is after weight loss stops (i.e. the initial bulk that we lose)....well I have done that and I cannot stand the thought of doing this and not losing anything. Sorry but I am so confused (and in a morphine haze) so please forgive me....I just want it all explained to me.....Does the sleeve work and is it as hard work as the band (6 years seemed like a lifetime)
  2. I couldn't get UnitedHealth care to cover my revision. I had 4 surgeons, including the Mayo clinic submit documentmentation saying if I don't have the revision, my risk of esophageal cancer and stomach cancer is at 80%, they still denied me. I'm paying out of pocket.
  3. Hello fellow bandsters/VSG'ers, I had my surgery on 1/29 in Richmond, VA. The band was removed and revised into the gastric sleeve in one surgery. The surgery itself lasted about 1 hour and fifteen minutes. I was in the hospital for a day and half and now staying in a hotel in Richmond until I can head home. I am working on liquids...and more liquids and trying to understand this new stomach, which is a lot different than my old. Can anyone tell me what your post-op (first few days after surgery) was like? I am incredibly sore in my abdomen, but have no other pain. I am off of narcotics at this point and just managing by moving (lots of walking). How long was it before the swelling in your abdomen went away? What was drinking like for the first week? I am getting fluids down but occasionally hear a gurgling noise. I imagine my stomach is still swollen and wondering where the other half (or more) went. Jennifer

    Where are my Bandsters???

Hey, I just wanted to stop by and say that after almost 2 years of struggling with my lap band and not losing weight, I have decided to undergo a revision. I'm proud of all of you who have lost weight, or met your goal weight, but also want those of you have haven't to know that you're not alone. I'm not trying to tell anyone that they should do what I've done. Just that you shouldn't feel discouraged if you're not making the same progress as others. Best to all, Juniper

    Calling all Exercise Buddies!

I am a 5 day a week at the gym girl and this was a major question I had for my doc when I made the decision to have band removed and revised to sleeve. He wants me walking from day 1 and then aerobics (cardio classes, spinning) at 3 weeks and than I can resume strength training, abs included at 4-5 weeks post-op depending on how I feel. I became an exercise fanatic during this past year with my band and I swear, that is the only reason I've lost any weight! Good luck.

    Excited and nervous

So as some of you know I started at 540 pounds October of 2015. I had surgery May 29, 2016 at 480 pounds and today (March 23, 2017) I am 303.6 pounds. I am mostly happy with my progress but am plagued with lots of extra skin. Even though I am not a year out from my surgery I met with a plastic surgeon for my stomach hang. It bothers me a lot and is pretty painful. The surgeon gave me 2 options. 1. I could wait until goal or 2. I could get have surgery to remove the hang now and have a revision later. I chose to try and have insurance cover it now and get a revision later because it bothers me so much. They submitted it to insurance and I got the call that they approved it!! My surgery date is June 5th! I'm very excited but also a bit nervous. The surgeon said mine would be the largest he has ever done and I would need at least 4 drains in for about 4 weeks. I'm also nervous that by June I might be closer to goal and it might be silly to get it now when I would have to get it again so soon. It's really hard to tell my rate of weight loss though once I get closer to goal. Overall I am excited and just wanted to share my good news with everyone!

    Goal weight

Congrats Babbs! We are pretty similar. How long did it take you to lose the weight? I am also hoping revisions chime in! It seems that we tend to lose slower!

    8 Week Stats

I'm at 8 weeks tomorrow. I went with my hubby to his appointment today for 6 weeks, so I got weighed too. I have lost 48 pounds :-D Hubby at 6 weeks has lost 37. We're both feeling great! My BMI has gone down 7 full points in 8 weeks. My official 2 months is still a week away so with any luck I'll drop those 2 lbs to make a nice even 50 lb loss for my first 2 months :confused1: I will have official update photos and measurements at that time! Also ~ someone wants to do a news story about us! I guess they do stories on my surgeon's patients from time to time and they inquired about us since we are a couple who did this together, and got the sleeve which is still so rare. We agreed and I gave my phone number so hopefully I will hear soon about the details. We might get a little TV spot! Most importantly, everyone there today was very receptive to all of our opinions about how the program can be improved for sleevers. The director of the hospital program, and the nutritionist teaching the class today both spend time with us taking notes because they are going through a huge revision process right now since they are starting to get more sleeve patients and they know the program needs to be improved. Hopefully our suggestions will help those who come after us.

    What Would You Do?

My story is so like yours, I am scheduled for a revision next wednesday. My band will be removed at the same time. (I am having some other non related issues that may put my surgery off but i am still certain I will have it eventually.) My Doc is very experienced so the revision is not a concern of his. I too have diabetes (very uncontrolled) losing 30 to 40 pounds and gaining it back and forth with the band never had any effect on the diabetes, That is my biggest reason for doing the RNY now. I should have done it in the first place, seven years ago, but I thought it was so drastic and that I didn't have that much to lose. But I had the co morbidities and should have went that route. So as I sit here waiting to here if an ovary acting up will delay my surgery and still on the pre op diet, I just wait. I was scheduled for revision on Nov 7, Doc came in right before I was to be wheeled back and said my blood sugars were too high. I was devastated. So rescheduled for Dec 5 and now this stomach pain that has had me in pain and doing scans and ultrasounds and having to find a GYN doc (haven't seen one of those in 20+ years) to either be cleared for surgery or possibly need the ovary removed. Something tells me I may have an operation just not the one I was hoping for just yet. I too am 57. And really want to have a life.

    Coughing with meals

I saw my surgeon yesterday who thinks something is wrong with my port. The office coordinator will send the information to my insurance company for revision Approval. I've lost 2 lbs over the weekend bc it hurts when I eat solids. I've been doing Isopure and jello with injury and injury chicken soup. I hope the approval comes back soon.

    What Would You Do?

Thanks Kristy. I was thinking to find a surgeon thats been in bariatric surgery longer than my new surgeon. No disrespect to him, but he is fairly new and has yet to do a revision.

    What Would You Do?

Go for RNY. I had my revision done in april. Totally worth it!! good luck!
  13. Had a hiccup last night which underlined an old problem I’m yet to properly solve. Fell out with my teen over exam revision. Her cycle of panicked ‘I can’t do this! But I have to do this! No you can’t help!’ pushed me over the edge to some totally inappropriate teen-like door slamming. I came back and apologised (I had made her cry, partly because the shock broke the tension, though it was totally the wrong thing to do), but not before I found and ate a packet of crisps (chips to the US crew). Stewed about my abject lack of will power, felt the ‘I may as well give up’ vibe creeping in, but told hubby and logged it and was still under 800 for the day. Made a point of looking at the nutrition break down and yep, 7.5g fat and 13.4g carbs in that 25g bag. But, in the grand scheme, I can balance that out in a day and I’ve also proven that I can come back from a couple of diversions on holiday to being totally in track, so this doesn’t have to be a slippery slope. My imagination is both my biggest asset and my biggest enemy because I can imagine small problems into insurmountable long-term barriers. Instead, thanks to the mindfulness about hunger and nutrition this injected, I am breaking down problems into manageable steps for today and tomorrow. Less failures and punishments. More blips and corrections. The emotional triggers need a whole heck of a lot more work though!
  14. Today, for the first time in 24 years, I weigh < 200 lbs! I am a band to bypass revision patient. Surgery was 3/23/15 and including the 15 I lost right before surgery, I'm down 60 lbs. It was quite emotional for me, but very uplifting too. I'm off my b/p meds and working out 5-6 days a week. I feel GREAT and this bypass is the best the decision ever! thanks for listening to me Celebrate

    Tears of joy-Onederland!

So totally happy for you! Still waiting for my appeal to be overturned so I can have the revision from band to bypass. I'm so discouraged! Hate the waiting! Had to hire Walter Lindstrom to handle my appeal with UHC. Don't know how much longer I can go on!!!

    Port Infection

He hates the band and is weary of all the complications he's been seeing lately. He's had to remove a lot lately. He's also concerned about this spontaneous infection and says that the band could be encouraging it. He says a film grows on the band and bacteria can grow on it. I've also been on 4 different antibiotics and none of them seem to be working. This is the first major issue I've had with it. I wanted a revision to sleeve but my insurance says my BMI of 20 doesn't qualify me for more bariatric surgery.

    Port Infection

@@Aurelia interesting. Sorry this has happened to you but glad there is no erosion. Should make healing much quicker. Why did he decide to remove the whole band and not just the port? Let us know how you get on, best wishes for a speedy recovery, do you plan to revise to another surgery type?
  18. :smile1: I am scheduled for my Upper GI on Friday ....(I so dread this -- but I will force myself to drink extra Water after - because the barium sticks to my small intestines like cement) My appointment with my Band Doc is on Thursday 7/8. I am getting my PCP letter and I will write a letter -- so all will be ready for my 7/8 appointment I am optimistic - but realistic but the good news is my insurance pays for a revision - so I am keeping my fingers crossed that he agrees my band problems warrant a revision at this time. How are the other AETNA insurance - revisions gals going with their process? Donna -- with a pain in the a** Lapband (2007) lost 80 - hoping for a revision to the Sleeve to loose the next 100 (w/o the pain and misery of the band)
  19. I'm here in Mexicali awaiting my revision from band to sleeve tomorrow morning with Dr. Aceves. Any anxious and nervous feelings I had have pretty much vanished once I got here. Everyone is awesome. Can't wait.

    Sacramento?

Hi all my doctor was dr. Donald Waldrep (SALSA) in Roseville ,CA. Hospital affiliation is Sutter Medical Center in Roseville. I had me lapband with him 31/2 years ago and revision to RNY on 6/17/13 ,he is a great bariatric surgeon, his staff is also amazing they know how to get the ball rolling for you!!! Roseville is in Sacramento just north .
  21. I finally feel good. Since I was a revision from a vbg to vsg, it took them 4 hours to do my surgery on Wednesday. I had a lot of scar tissue plus a conversion from a vbg to vsg is not always easy and usually they end up doing a by pass, so i feel very fortunate. They finally did the UGI this morning and no leaks and out went that nasty NG tube. Yay. Had my first meal and no issues there either. I will be staying here till Sunday and I'm ok with that. Wondering how the others are doing.

    New here.

I am also new here but have read many posts for a while and this is my first posting. I am asking my insurance company to pay for a revision surgery due to weight regain and complications from a 10 year old gastric bypass. I have regained most of my weight loss after much hard work to lose the weight and I have an unhappy ulcer and a hiatal hernia. I had no care after surgery as my wls center closed down soon after my operation. If I get a second chance I will feel very fortunate and take care of my eating and behavioral issues this time. Karen

    Band to sleeve acid reflux?

I am so sorry about all of your problems! I am ready to kiss my band good-bye to from endless complications. I haven't had reflux problems, but I would like to know if anyone has had problems with this after revision. Good luck and I hope healing is in your near future.
  24. I was always under the impression that a revision was going to result in more pain then the original band surgery. NOT at all true for me. This has been a lot easier and everything at 5 is going great.....I'm having such little trouble at this point, I'm beginning to worry that something terrible willl happen to me, just to punish me. I'm on Clear liquids for another 10 days......this is the worst part. Dr. Aceves wanted me on on clears until day 15 after my surgery, due to a lot of scar tissue from the band. I have my band and I'm planning my special tribute video farewell for it next week. I will post it on youtube. I'm thinking a small ceremony with a creamation at the end!!!!!!!!!! I'm sure the lapband people will be horrified.
  25. Glad to hear you're dong so well Karen. :car: I'm so happy that you can eat a lot more normally yet still have a weight loss tool that works for you! I just had an esophogram done... as my original surgeon thought an undiagnosed slip might be the reason for all my re-fill problems. Well, the Band looks picture-perfect... and as a bonus, they informed me that my subclavian artery is abnormal in that it goes behind/in front of (can't remember which) my esophogus. Nothing to be worried about... just a nice to know. So... this all means that in mid-October I'll be heading out to see if I can be refilled. We'll see. If not, it's revision time sometime next year.
