  1. I’m losing quite a bit of hair and I’m 10 weeks post op. Has anybody here gotten extensions to help with hair volume? How did it work out?

    Carbonated Beer

Sleeve here and I have had no issues with carbonated drinks of any kind since a few weeks after my surgery (I had champagne at christmas last year with my surgeon's blessing). I just burp up the gas immediately but I can have a few swigs of beer or diet cola etc. before that happens, and then I'm ready for another few, LOL. Must be one of those things that varies from person to person as well as depending on the procedure you've had.

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

Hi D&S, lovely to see you again and glad to hear you've done so well! Think I'm also done losing - at 147 for a few weeks, going up and down the same pound or two. Very very happy too. I can't afford any skin removal surgery so I just have to content myself with my body's appearance. Definitely much better than it looked 15 months ago!

    Weight loss stalling?

Definitely a stall and they are annoying. I think I've hit one every 3 months. I get off the scale for a week, really look at my food journal to see where I am with protein and water intake, and maybe change up my exercise. I've gotten pissed with myself because the scale did not budge for three weeks but in the meantime, I had dropped a full dress size because I built muscle from adding weight lifting. To shift your mind and relax your body, I recommend yoga for stress and relaxation. Namaste.

    Eating too fast!

I am about 12 weeks out from the sleeve. I have more variety and fewer restrictions. However, I have noticed I stopped eating slowly. I still use a baby spoon to keep my bites small but stopped timing my bites 1 minute apart like suggested by my team. I think I stopped because I was tired of my food being cold after a few nibbles. Also, I would stop eating not because I was full but because it took so long... I'm a busy mom of 4 kiddos. So I really picked up the pace. I've noticed it's easier to overeat due to delayed hunger signals but I still have never vomited or been in pain. My full signal seems to be pressure in my stomach/chest area.. almost the same signal I had if I overdid it at a buffet before surgery. However this feeling only lasts about 20 mins now versus hours before surgery. My question is why do we eat slow? Is it just to avoid delayed hunger signals? What are the cons of not slowing down? I'm still pre-weighing my food so I know I'm not eating more than I would if I ate slow. Could I have stretched my sleeve already? I do consistently have the stuffed feeling after eating the last few weeks. Sent from my SM-S115DL using BariatricPal mobile app

    Outpatient Gastric Bypass

I had the rny bypass and was in agony afterwards. Stayed 3 night in hospital but also in Australia. Ask the clinic if they have links to a medical facilities if you find yourself in difficulties. This is major surgery. Cant be too cautious.
  8. Metamucil is fibre so having that 3 times a day is where the poop is coming from lol. You won't be able to take Metamucil after surgery as it swells in your tummy ,so can I suggest cloudy pear juice to keep things moving

    November 2022 Surgery Buddies

Officially 11 weeks, so excited for my upcoming 3 month appointment, I know the Doc goes over important info for going forward and expectations. Yesterday was a day that I was having lots of head hunger, my hormones are going nuts having a period every 12 to 14 days, I'm not going to weight myself until the day before my appointment since I tend to get swollen ankles when having pms. I guess having multiple periods is better than going 8+ months without one [emoji57] Sent from my SM-G960U1 using BariatricPal mobile app

    Tips for pre-op diet?

I didn't feel the need to be near the bathroom my bowel movements were the same, and I may have peed once or twice more than usual. I did not feel hungry, I was having 3 shakes a day and chicken breast with brocoli or cucumber for dinner. The first day was easy, the second was hard, but then it became a habit since I had my dinner ready and would look forward to it. Also, when I got wild thoughts, I kept thinking if I did not do it correctly something could happen during surgery, that kept me in line especially when I had to cook for dinner parties, didn't even taste the food lol Sent from my SM-G960U1 using BariatricPal mobile app

    Dental issues?

Not sure how the surgery affects teeth down the line, but understand your frustation, I have been having similar issues since puberty. My mom has dentures from her early 20s, and I have 3 implants from when I turn 18, had a bridge, braces, some chains attached to my braces (I know lol), had to get 2 bone grafts because my jaw bone was not enough and had to eventually get a gum graft because of my receding gums, multiple root canals, etc. Not sure if you have insurance or not, I do not but have Dental Plans, it reduces your dentist fee up to 80% and you pay about $90 per year. You can use this to cover the fee or the portion your insurance does not cover. Good luck Sent from my SM-G960U1 using BariatricPal mobile app

    Outpatient Gastric Bypass

My sister had her bypass in Boston and she was kept for 2 days. I had mine near Boston and was kept for 3 days due to pain management issues. I can't imagine what it would have been like having it as outpatient.

    Dental issues?

Who has had major dental issues since having surgery? I swear I'm about to jump off a cliff. This June will mark 7 years since my sleeve. I would say probably about year 3-4, I started having multiple cavaties. The more time went on, the more I got. I've had them all filled in over time to the point where MOST of my teeth are complete "fillings". The dentist said there's really not much of my teeth left, they are mostly made up of fillings. I'm nos to the point where the teeth are just starting to break. I broke one about 4-5 months ago on a Hershey Kiss (no nuts in it) and 2 days ago, another broke on a chicken tender. The dentist has gone over with me my options..............eventually dentures, partials or implants. GREAT! When I went yesterday to have her look at the one that broke we discussed again my options. I told her I was just about done with my teeth and to pull them all. UGH!!!! The thing is though...............she said in order for me to get partials, I need "anchor teeth" to hook the partials onto. Well, I don't have ANY good teeth anymore to even do that. She said the teeth that would be the "anchor teeth" are completely fillings and would eventually break. She said I could do root canals then cap them but she said those could eventually break as well. Which now leaves me with implants. But I hear those are EXPENSIVE!!! If you've been in the same boat as me, what has been your experience? Did you end up having all your teeth removed and get dentures? Partials? Implants? How painful was your experience? How did your new teeth look? Any pros/cons? I'm only 51. I never thought I'd get to this point.

    Outpatient Gastric Bypass

I would ask if they do the barium swallow test the next day and where do you have to go for it? I had my surgery two weeks ago and the standard in Australia is min. Two nights stay so the idea of outpatient is weird to me but your surgeon and hospital would be professionals! :)

    Carbonated Beer

im not a beer drinker, but i have sparkling water all the time (like maybe 5-6 litres a week). been drinking it regularly since about 2 months post op. funny enough, i never drank it pre-op. i was a diet coke addict back then. and no issues drinking it with me...but i may get burpy if i drink it too fast. p.s. i am a liquor drinker and have no real issues other than i get affected pretty fast (but i also sober up pretty fast as well) trial and error will tell you what u can handle...just try to take it slow...you wont know how much is too much until you do. good luck! ❤️

    Gas pain

I had gastric bypass in March last year. For about 3 or 4 months, I have had ridiculous gas pain and discomfort. I thought it was from making bad food choices so I went back to eating the right stuff. It doesn’t matter what I eat or even if I eat, there is still unbelievable gas. I don’t drink anything carbonated, no coffee or tea, don’t use straws. It doesn’t matter if I exercise or not. Does anyone else have this problem? I had CT scans for a kidney stone problem, the only thing they found was some swollen abdominal lymph nodes and the stones.

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

SO frustrating when you did so well up to that FMO! I am also good on weekdays, lax at weekends and I also drink alcohol at weekends but I'm maintaining at this point. Could you go back to something more like your post op diet? Protein first (so important I find) fruit and veg next, carbs a very last last? And track track track - you know it works. Focus on the 3 months you have to lose some more before that check up. I wish you the very best of luck 💪

The GERD is better for the most part. I just stopped the Protonix after 3 months and I’m okay unless I’m having one of those “attacks “

    Broken rib

Around October last year I fractured my tibial plateau badly, along with damage to my ACL, PCL and meniscus and was bed-ridden in a locked leg brace for seven weeks. I was over a year post-op at the time, so weight loss was way slower and the chances of me snacking over my calorie limit was high, particularly with the boredom of forced bed rest. Still dropped two kilograms over that time, despite thinking that I was for sure going to put a bit back on. At ten weeks, your surgery will still be at its strongest, so if you stick to the plan you'll be fine. Sore, but fine. (I also broke a rib just before Christmas. I'm apparently collecting broken bones now 🙃)
  21. im 4+ years out. I only followed the "dont drink 30 mins BEFORE meals" rule like the first 3 months. I discovered that drinking right up to the moment i put solids into my mouth had zero effect on me. so yeah. BUT...the "don't drink 30 mins AFTER you eat" rule, i still follow religiously. if I dont follow this rule, i will 10 times out of 10 feel super-uncomfortably full. And 7 times out of 10 i will eventually barf. Dumping: Im a sleeve and unfortunately, a dumper. If i have too much sugar (esp on an empty stomach) i will get some sort of symptom(s) within 20 mins. As in: heart racing, lethargy, lower stomach cramps, diarrhea, vomiting, or just passing out. I could get one, some or all symptoms at once. *shudder* P.S. when the diarrhea and vomiting come together, its the WORST. luckily haven't had one of these particular episodes in years, but the memory is still branded on my brain. *double shudder*

    Carbonated Beer

It's going to be very dependent on how your body tolerates carbonation--I am 16 mos post op and in maintenance, and I still don't tolerate things like diet soda or seltzer very well unless I allow them to go flat first, but everyone is different and you can see even within this thread that different plans and individuals have different rules. I do drink occasionally (2-3 times a month, and I didn't start until I was 6 mos post op as recommended by my surgeon). It's usually some sort of spirits on the rocks, sometimes mixed with some sugar-free mixer (Ocean Spray diet juice is a GREAT mixer and only has one carb and 5 calories in 8 oz). A really good non-carbonated summer drink is iced tea with the spirit of your choice (I really like peach-flavored whiskey in it, but a fruity vodka or something would be nice).

    Russian Roulette

I had my sleeve revised to RNY 11/10/22 due to GERD. I stayed on fluids/purées/soft foods advancing very slowly. I didn’t start solid foods until end of December (about 6 weeks). Since then I feel like I’m playing Russian Roulette every time I eat. Sometimes I eat and feel fine without pain or restriction. Other times I will eat the same exact thing, same amount and be doubled over in pain until 4-8 hours later when I finally throw up and the food comes up not even partially digested. Every time I freak that I have an obstruction. Nutritionists say it’s too much fiber or too much fat, but it’s not necessarily associated with diarrhea and why, then, can I tolerate it sometimes and others not? Surgeon is sending me in for an upper GI barium study next week. I’m so stressed that I have stretched my pouch somehow but I can sometimes eat far more volume without issue compared to some of these episodes. Has anyone else experienced this? TMI, I’m also noticing pale colored stools but the pain is on the left, not on the right with my gallbladder. He said my gallbladder looked fine during surgery. I just need this to work so I feel better and can get on with my life.

No energy 5 days post op sleev

I remember that first week was a total wipe out for me. I didn't and couldn't do anything other than take naps and sit in the recliner. My kids were wondering if they needed to take me to the doctor. After about the second week I was feeling a lot better. Listen to your body and don't try to do too much. You'll be up and moving around in no time.
