    Eating at night

I think the whole "night eating is bad for you" is a myth. I've always had a problem eating at night. It is only a problem IF you are going over your calorie limit or eating the wrong kind of foods. I eat around midnight 5-7 days a week. Its usually dense meat like fish or turkey sticks. Sometimes I'll eat cucumbers with vinegar if I'm near my limit for the day. I lost 100 pounds in 5 months after surgery. Fortunately, I don't think the night eating hindered my weight loss what so ever. Now, eating starchy, carbohydrate rich food right before bed or the middle of the night is a no-no. That's how I got so big in the first place. That's not to say I don't crave a piece of cake or pie in the middle of the night. I just don't make it available in my house.

    my missing stomach

My excess stomach never did me any favors. It allowed me (with my help, of course) to over eat tremendously. It caused me to have constant hunger and cravings. It got me to 264 pounds and just below the diabetic line. Because of my weight, I was unable to do so many things, and I missed out on so many opportunities with my kids. Five years ago, a lemon sized brain tumor was found in my noggin. It's estimated that it was growing there for about ten years. They cut that out because it was affecting me in a negative way. Six years ago my gall bladder was removed due to gall stones and severe pain. I didn't hold on to any of these things because they were making me unhealthy. My stomach was no different. You would have a cancerous growth removed, I assume, or a sketchy mole. You would fix a bad heart or liver or joint. You would remove a tonsil or appendix if you had to. Why not part of your stomach if it would make you healthier? Think about it.
  3. I have a theory about stalls. I have no idea if this can be scientifically proven or not but it makes sense to me. When I was on my way up to the weight that ultimately got me to consider the sleeve, it wasn't a steady climb. I remember getting to a weight and staying there for a long time, a year or two. I remember being at the 215-217 weight for a significant period of time. I also remember when I was at the 201-203 weight. I even remember the clothes I was able to wear while at that weight. So, it seemed to make sense to me when I stalled at 216. Once I got past that and started to decline again, I figured that I would stall out again at the 202ish weight. Sure enough, that is where I am now. I figure I'll be at this weight for a while and then will start to lose again. The next stall should be at the 187-189ish weight. Anywho, just some rambling thoughts.

    A theory about stalls...

I notice pretty much the same with my weight too.. not sure if it is scientific though..

    A theory about stalls...

I sure do hope you are right! I have been stalled for several weeks and just can't seem to budge the scale no matter what I do. I am exercising at the gym 5 days a week and have lost 10 pounds of body fat in 2 months but no weight. At least I'm not gaining! Have worried that my pouch has stretched but I do still feel the restriction. I am able to eat more than I expected before I feel the restriction.

    I have failed badly

If you believe 1/2 of the Bullsh!t that the Employees tell you, then your sure to FAIL ! You need to talk to people that have been there, and done it. / People that have walked in your shoes. I have walked in your shoes do to bad aftercare. He deflated my Band, and I regained almost all my weight back. In January I tipped the scales at 328 I said this $h!t stops now. So I put myself on 1200 calories a day (it was hard !) and I began the search for a new surgeon. Fast Forward . I found one, and he excepted me. They looked at it under Fluorscope for Revision Surery. There was nothing wrong with it ???? So they put in a Acrylic in case of a leak, and filled me to my fill line. and I feel GREAT ! The Band does work ! But you have to limit yoursel on intake, and exercise. You know what is expected of you. Go to myfitnesspal.com and record all of your info there. It's FREE ! So no worry to you. You make a effort and this will work, No effort, and Bypass fails too. Make a apt. with your surgeon, and explain what's going on. If you get no satisfaction. Seek out another Dr.... I did ! ! and it worked.... You to can do this too. Were always here for help.

    Questioning everything

I'm also a dieting "pro". My bmi was 35. This has made it a million times easier to lose weight without hunger pains or needing to cheat or anything I'm only roughly 6 months out but I went from 5'10 245 to 166 in that time period. By the end of May I'll be the lightest I've been since I was a teenager. Could I have lost the weight, yes totally I've done it before (although soon I'll be in uncharted waters). Could I have kept it off? Almost certainly not. And would I constantly have been hungry miserable and forced to cheat or turn to weight loss products probably. The surgery has turned my cycle of horrible yoyoing into something long term and sustainable while allowing me to enjoy my quality of life instead of being miserable and hungry.
  8. I'm coming up on my 2-year bandiversary and have fallen off the wagon. I've been on a rollercoaster for the past year, and have been eating around my band and gaining and losing, gaining and losing...you get the idea. I've finally gotten myself back on track this week, but could use someone to hold myself accountable to. I've lost 154 pound so far (I had lost 162, but had a gain around my wedding last month) and have about 40 more to go. Close by or far away, doesn't matter! (I'm in central PA). Thanks!

    Slow Losses

I have knee issues too so I can sympathize. Have you thought about going to a physical therapist? Mine was great and showed me all kinds of exercise I could do even with my bum knee. Riding the bike is a GREAT one but you really need the PT to show you the right way to do it. Dependiing on what the issue is, they can also give you strengthening exercises to do at home and/or on the equipment at the gym. Also, water aerobics are great and you can modify if there's anything hard on the knees (I tell my instructor and she gives me ideas to modify, but really as long as you keep moving you're good). Also, what about gentle walking? Hang in there--your weight loss is GREAT for 2 months even if it does slow down a bit. Make sure you are getting plenty of water and protein.
  10. In doing pre-op research, I read about everyone's "goal weight" and am wondering how it's determined? Is it simply the likely end weight based on VSG statistical weight loss averages? Is it your own goal weight? Does the doctor help to determine? The bottom line is that I would like a goal weight that is really achievable. THANKS!

    How Is "goal Weight" Determined?

I set my goal weight at 200 pounds. Well Actually, I'd like to be 190. I'm 5'5" so that's still obese but considering that I've been very obese since childhood and my highest weight is 360 pounds, I felt like 200 was realistic... but 190 is achievable with more effort. During my late 20s I made a very sincere push to lose weight... I stuck with it for a long time but couldn't get below 230.

    How Is "goal Weight" Determined?

My surgeon never gave me a goal weight. She told me to stop when I was down to 160 lbs. I kept going and am now between 144 to 147lbs and that is my personal goal as well....... I love my skinniness.....

    How Is "goal Weight" Determined?

I was told something similar by one of the surgeons I considered. He told me that he measured success if someone had lost 50% of their excess weight. My actual surgeon did not discuss a goal weight with me, but I was sleeved in Mexico and have no intentions on following up with him.

    How Is "goal Weight" Determined?

I think the doctor sets a weight that is more beneficially to them to show success rates. My doctor said 180. I said 170. I am 165...ON his scale I am probably 162. I believe you should set a goal of 5 pounds for every inch over 5 feet tall...so if you are 5'5" then your goal should be 125. That is aggressive, but possible if you work hard in the first year to cut those calories and work out. I am 5'11" and set my goal for 170 because the doctor said 180. If I set my goal based on this I would be 155. I would love to be 155. I am guessing that if I have skin removal surgery I probably would be fairly close to 155

    Getting nervous!

April marks my 5th month of a 6 month medically monitored weight loss plan that was required by surgery. I’ve done everything else that the surgeon required and now I’m just waiting. I’m starting to get nervous about whether or not my insurance will approve me for the surgery...or that I will have gained weight and not be able to get approved for the surgery. According to my PCP and my surgeon, I meet all of the requirements for the surgery and I’m down 7lbs. from my starting weight but I’m struggling to lose anymore. I can’t seem to help stressing out about it all. What do you do to get out of your own head and not stress? Any words of encouragement are welcome!

    Asthma and weight loss

My pulmonary doctor told me that since I was carrying too much weight on my chest that it couldn't expand properly and that is why my peak flow is quite low and I am quite short of breath. Is there anybody out there that as been banded awhile and had this particular circumstance? I really had a asthma problem after the anesthesia - had to start taking breathing treatments for a couple of weeks. How long did it take to see an improvement in your asthma? Thanks, Kerry

Struggling - Banded 8-22-08, eating too much!!!

:frown:I'm struggling with the soft food diet. I am eating way too much food. I can easily eat over a cup of food and don't feel the restrictions as I did last week. My weight loss has actually stopped and I gained 2 pounds. It's been only 15 days since my operation.

Pre/post op VSG photos of skin

What you can expect is going to depend on a number of factors such as how much you have to lose, how long you've been overweight, how old you are, skin type, body type, and probably a bunch of other genetic factors. What isn't a factor tho, is the sleeve. You could look at before and after photos regardless of the method of weightloss to see what you might be able to expect. Just try to find someone who started at a similar weight as you, ended at a goal weight similar to yours, is roughly the same age and has a similar body type.
  19. Hi Shannon, I have to say your story could be mine. I am married with two great kids. Have been on every diet, lose weight but can't keep it off. My husband loves me no matter what, but I had to do this for me first and formost, then for my family, to enjoy them again. I was banded on May 13th, and I have to say it has only been a month, but it so far was the best thing I have done. I have lost 20pds so far, and I feel great. I am not hungery all the time, it is amazing how my portion sizes changed and I am satisfied. I did not have to do a pre-op diet, and the liqued diet after was not that bad for me. Any time we make a major change in our life it is going to be scary and unsettling, but hang in there, and stick with the program. The band is just a tool, you still need to work at it. Your mind will still crave the things you wanted before now you have to change your thinking, and ask do I really need that. You will do great, have faith in yourself. Best of luck!

    Weird..

The woman weighs over 1,000 lbs and she blames it on a thyroid problem. Insane. No thyroid problem made you gain 800+ lbs.

    Working out

Actually I use a polar heart rate monitor and watch that I input my age, weight etc so it is accurate ... I haven't reached out to my dr yet since today was my first day back in the gym but I intend to call tomorrow. I just didn't want to eat too little and it hurt me.

  23. Hi Scylla. I am a little over 2 weeks post op and have lost 7 lbs. I know exactly how you feel! I was on a 1200 calorie diet beginning in November and then the 2 week liquid diet pre op. I lost 51 lbs. pre op and I truly believe that the people who are losing massive amounts in the first few weeks are losing Water weight, which we have already lost. My doctor told me not to worry, as long as I am losing. I <3 him! By the way, I put away my scale and am now only going to weigh once a week. I'm trusting the process and trying not to compare myself to others, as hard as that is at times! Good luck!!
  24. I know a lot of Dr recommend to not weigh yourself at all in the first month. It has to do with Fluid retention. I also believe your coordinator is spot on about comparing yourself to others. Some folks may have been on different diets than you, so there is going to be variance there. If you just keep following the guidelines as closely as you can, you will lose weight. And as has been mentioned, your body will hit plateaus. It is a good thing as your body has the ability to go into starvation mode. That is a normal, healthy response. It will pass as you continue to follow the guidelines.
  25. I'm curious if you guys have all been tracking your weight weekly since your surgery. I've been keeping a spreadsheet where I track my weight every Monday morning (my surgery was on a Monday) and I find it fascinating to see the differences in how much weight I've lost each week, even though I'm only 4 weeks out so far. I would LOVE to see some of your stats if you are willing to share them so I can see how much variance there is in the week-to-week losses further out from surgery than I am. So, if you have been tracking your weight weekly, please post all the weekly stats here! Here's mine so far: Surgery: 235.6 Week 1: 228.6 (-7.0) Week 2: 228.2 (-0.4) Week 3: 224.4 (-3.8) Week 4: 221.8 (-2.6) Looking forward to seeing yours!
