  1. Hi all! About to have my final appointment with the doctor before setting the surgery date. I talked to the pt advocate this morning about what it would cost to have a revision (in case something happened) or to clear up an infection (like a port infection). She said it would be about $6000 for the surgeon! I also asked if I would have to pay up front (I am self pay) before anything was done. She said that I would most likely have to pay up front. So, here are my questions: 1) If I get an infection, isn't it wrong that I have to pay up front before they will fix it?, 2) What does it typically cost someone to have a revision?, 3) If you have a gastric sleeve instead, will your insurance cover any costs associated with problems after it?, 4) so if I end up needing to get re-banded - do I have to pay another huge chunk of money up front to do it?!?! Also, right as I was getting ready to hang up the phone, she went over what my out-of-pocket costs for the band were. She mentioned all the doctors fees, facility fees etc, but then said that it would cover post care for up to three months. Originally, I was told it was a year! Was I hallucinating?!?! Is 3 months normal? I was feeling so much better about my decision, now I'm back to wondering what the heck I am doing! HELP!:frown:

Pouch on top of sleeve ?

I have the same thing. In fact my doc says that every band to sleeve revision he's done results in a pouch above the sleeve. He told me that when he does the sleeve it looks normal, but because that upper tissue is stretchy from over dialation with the band, it makes a pouch. That makes it really important to measure out your food as it is easy to eat too much and when the food proceeds down the sleeve it could really stretch out over time.

    *~Finally got a computer at home~*

Kim, Answer to your first ? A Port Revision is when your port becomes disconnected. I had to have my port removed and a new one put in a different site and reconnected. This does not happen very much anymore because the company that makes the band has fixed the problem. Now your second ? .80cc's is less that 2cc's. Hence the higher the # the tighter the restriction. To me it seems that you would have to get more cc's to get better restriction. But since I had my revision being at .80cc is just like being at 2cc's for me. That is what is great about the band. It can be ajusted to fit your needs. XOXO~Teresa
  4. Hi there Is there anybody out there that has had a band to sleeve revision in Guadalajara with Dr's Osuna, lopez or Diaz? I would really appreciate any feedback. Many thanks!
  5. I had lapband surgery in July of 2013. I had lost 180 pounds prior to surgery. At first things went pretty good, than they started taking away all the foods I had eaten to successfully lose 180 pounds!!! OMG if it isn't broke don't fix it! Thus I quit losing about a year ago, even though I work out and count every calorie that goes in my mouth! My trainer feels I'm not getting enough to eat. My band is considered a failure even though it has not slipped. However I have other problems. Now I have decided to have it removed and revised to the sleeve. Family does not support my decision. I turn 60 on Friday and my weight issues have me very upset. I guess I just need some input from others who have already done this. What can I expect, I need to lose another 50 than skin surgery and from there on to maintain. Just need some reassurance I guess. Thank you for listening.
  6. Morning all. Has anyone had any luck getting a refund from MBC after complications? I was a band to Sleeve revision and immediately developed a stricture. I was unable to eat for 2 months, was hospitalized immediately after after returning home, sent home with an NG tube, and have started the process of dilations. All 3 surgeons I've seen of the US said the standard of care would have been to stop after removing my band and seeing what bad shape my stomach was in(full of scar tissue, adhesions and ulcers) and not proceeded to Sleeve. It's so upsetting that all these problems could have been avoided! I'm trying to talk to the business office now to get some kind of refund. It has cost me over $5000 since I've been home from these complications. I understand sometimes things happen but there is also bad judgement and greed at play. Drs are to "First do no harm" Mexico or US a Drs first responsibility is to do what best for his patients. Just so frustrated.
  7. I hate my sleeve and am going in for a Rny in June coz my sleeve dose not work right. 6 months 35lbs that's it almost 7 months now. No weight loss in 12 weeks no inches lost in 14 weeks. The sleeve has a 20% chance of failure rate Check out The high revision rate for the sleeve I wish I would have before I got it.

    I Got Unfilled Today...

I 've had the same problem since Oct when I had my revision due to sliappage. I finally am back at 5 cc and seem to be okay, unless I eat something I should not. I am loosing again, and that is my main thing, as I had gained about 10 lbs between OCt and Jan. Good luck to us all , Karen
  9. Yeah, I thought about that too but I went ahead and had the revision done. I was very attached to my band. I thought exactly what you posted when I thought of a revision surgery. I know someone who had the bypass around the same time as my band, and now they are twice as heavy. I initially went in for a fill since I've been traveling, working and moving, I hadn't seen a fill doctor for a couple of years since I was still doing well and losing with the level of Fluid I had. So when I finally made an appointment with my current bariatric center, just to check my fluid level, and maybe get more added, they suggested the revision, and an unfill right then due to an enlarged esophagus (Too tight again, 2nd time for me). Gasp! I wasn't a happy camper because I knew I was going to gain some weight back once they unfill me. No way, I just want a fill please. Um, no can do... Either rest my band for months again and get refilled & struggle to find that sweet spot again or rest my band and get a revision. That's why I opted for the revision so I wouldn't go through the weight gain-weight loss cycle again since I had a habit of being too tight. I was still working to get to goal again after my first enlarged esophagus episode. I almost didn't go through with it. I'm happy with the results, the physical sensation that I get from the sleeve vs the band when I eat, as well as the weight loss results so far. I'm 24 days post-op and I'm down 22 lbs, and it's been relatively easy staying on program. Haven't thrown up or slimed yet. I guess from the band all these years, I know when to stop. That familiar pressure in the back of our throat... Stop or else. ^^ But, having said that, It is all very new to me though so check back in a few months lol. Since you're at goal, does your doctor still want you to have a revision, do you have issues with your band? Either way, hope it works out for you.

    revision approved!

I am having a revision too, seeing my surgeon next week to discuss final details and plans. I SO never thought I would ever need a revision. I've had regain, but this revision is more for the severe GERD that never resolved after my VSG. So i'm moving to RNY. I'm happy to get the GERD out of my life, as i'm popping Prevacid like M&Ms, taking 3-4 in a 24 hour period most days. Obviously i'm happy to have another part of the tool to help with my regain too, but I also feel a bit defeated having to accept this as part of my battle. I could not get the regain off myself and that feels a bit like failure. BUT........onward to better things. I am for some reason, SCARED TO DEATH to have a revision. I am much more stable-health wise- than I was with my VSG but for some reason I feel like this is SO much more involved. Ironically, my surgeon told me that the whole process shouldn't take him more than 30-45 minutes.

    Hospital

Ok now I have my surgery date which is June 3 however I paid my doctor the $221.27 for whatever I had to pay I can’t remember. Now today the hospital called and informed me that I have to pay 2,821.00 on the date of my surgery or I can’t have it. I told that lady why in the hell would I just not receive this information some people don’t have that type of money. She said we will only accept half and we will bill you for the rest ok but still I don’t have $1400. This is crazy because I should have known this information way before now. When I had the sleeve my doctor had the hospital to tell me what I would have to pay out of pocket and they put me on a three month payment plan before I had my surgery. I actually thought that I wouldn’t have to pay since it was deem medical reason for the revision to bypass. My insurance company said that I hadn’t met my in network out of pocket deductible which is $5,500 some of these insurance companies are complete riff off.

    Hypothyroidism

I was on the very low end with my T4 levels pre-op with my band, and with my sleeve revision. My revision surgeon said it might resolve on it's own after I lost weight. At my 3 month follow-up, my thyroid levels were right in the middle of the "normal". I just had my labs pulled yesterday, and will get the results Monday. They did an extensive thyroid panel so I'll share the results when I get them on Monday.
  13. Has anyone have the 2 step revision process: 1st surgery band removed & then had to wait 6 weeks to the RNY? How fast was your recovery from having the band removed? I am in the process of trying to be approved to have my band removed and revised to RNY. I had the band placed back in 2013 & thought I was going the conservative route ... Ugh!! If I could go back in time & tell have myself not to do it, I would. I hate this damn thing ... Long story short, it has slipped and it is unfilled. I switched surgeons due to insurance purposes (and well, I didn't feel like my last surgeon listened to my concerns) ... He does a 2 step revision. He wants to remove the band, see how bad the scar tissue is & let that heal. Then go back in 6 weeks and revise.
  14. Hello, I just had my plication surgery on 8/9/13. I already have and have had a lap band for several years. Unfortunately I was not successful in keeping the 90 lbs I lost off with just my lap band plus I developed a hiatal hernia. So my wonderful doctor suggested the lap band revision along with the plication. I was in a deep dark place and decided to go for it once again. My band did not need to be replaced it was in perfect order and no slippage. So he repaired my hernia and did the plication. I felt great after right after surgery! I started walking that very night after surgery because I wanted to go home the next day. There was no rest to be had in that hospital. My band is totally open and will not have a fill for a long while. That gives my hernia time to heal. I have lost 13lbs in the first 2 weeks. I have slowed down now that I am starting my soft foods. Now its time to start my exercising which is my most dreaded part of the day. So I have started with walking and bike riding. I have to say the post surgery is a little more severe this time for me. I took a week off from work. I have returned to work but my main issue is the main incision or (hole) just below the breast bone is taking a long time to heal. The skin and area around the incision is very very sensitive and I almost cant stand my clothes touching that area. I find I can only wear my bra for half the day then its on to a sports bra. Other than that problem I am doing well. My food intake is much less and of course I am trying to do mostly Protein along with some smoothies. I am scared because I thought I would have lost more weight by now but I guess my body is adjusting? And I have not been the best about exercising yet. But I am hopeful and trying to fill myself with a positive attitude. Did any of you find using a nutritionist helpful? I guess that is enough about me....I look forward to finding encouragement on exercising from your posts and looking for good recipes. Thanks for reading and sending any positive thoughts and prayers my way.

    Can Fills Be Dangerous????

the port could be flipped if the surgeon didn't suture it on. Mine was not sutured initially and it flipped. I had to have a port revision surgery to have it flipped back and at that point he sewed it to my abdominal wall. It also could have moved if it isn't sewed. Mine moved from my upper rib cage to nearly my belly button.
  16. I had gastric bypass 29 years ago. A lot of scare tissue. It had tone revised 10 years ago. So this brings me to Monday's surgery. The surgery time was 5 Hours. They replace all the old mesh and liced the scare tissue. A very Big surgery. This was my last chance to have a bad put in. All went great. Very sore and 9 holes. It was worth every bit of the pain I had it done at Columbia Pres in NYC. Dr Marks Bessler, he is my hero. Two days later I am on pain Med and clear broth 2oz every 20 mins. Two Baristric advantage shakes a day for a week. For today I am working the band. One day at a time. Good Luck Bill

    Lap Band vs Sleeve

I can only tell you my story and I have had both. The band for me was AWFUL. AWFUL! I can't believe I lived with it for 5 years. I had port pain for 5 years it never went away. Sure sometimes I couldn't feel it but many many times years later at night I could feel it and it was sore. The other nightmare about the band is that if you eat one bite of something that doesn't go thru you are in trouble. So for example an innocent piece of broccoli? You experience pain and being to slime and can only hope it will come back up. This happened to me at restaurants, people's houses, during birthday dinners with my family. I missed so much in the bathroom praying that little piece of whatever would come up. It's not if you overeat it's if it goes down wrong. Slider foods? Have fun with that bc you can drink a mcdonalds shake and eat crackers or cookies and you can eat a lot of them. Lastly I never lost any weight. Maybe 20lbs in the beginning. But that's it! You can eat slider foods so much more easily with the band and you probably will if you have the experiences I did with the healthier foods not going down. If it was choice for me to eat crackers that were guaranteed to not give me a problem I would choose that over a salad with chicken because who needs that kind of work? Fast forward 5 years and I finally revised to a sleeve in January. My only regret is that I didn't start here and wasted so much time suffering with the band. I'm down 100 lbs in a size 10 jeans and I feel amazing. I can eat small amounts of whatever I want however I have become a much healthier eater. For example we are tailgating tomorrow and I made a ton of food today and a huge veggie tray that I will munch on. With the band I would have planned on chips and salsa so I didn't end up in the bathroom for the entire game. As far as keeping the weight off no tool will do that for you. This is a long and difficult journey. My weight loss is slowing down now dramatically and I have to start thinking about maintenance and it's scary. However the past 9 months have been preparing me and I feel optimistic that I will be able to continue eating healthy and since I am unable to binge on anything I really think I'm gonna make it. I know there are some people that have been successful with the band and maybe they will tell you differently that it works and go for it but it absolutely did not work for me it worked against me. The sleeve is a dream and I'm so so so happy I did it! Good luck! Band to sleeve revision surgery 1/16/17 HW: 283 CW: 183 GW: 160
  18. Hi there. From everything I read your first was sleeve w\ Sadi is going to be wonderful. I’m a revision surgery, so unfortunately I can’t tell you much. My experience is slow, BMS are bad with a lot of simple carbs, but I’m thankful for the opportunity
  19. Was for revision surgery or an initial WLS? Its been a week and I haven't heard anything. ...It's getting a lil nerve wrecking!

9 years out and still going!

Hi there, glad to hear you're doing well and congrats on all those steps!! I converted from band to bypass on oct 3, 2016. My band slipped and cause almost daily vomiting, eventually the only thing I could eat were sliders. I lived like that for two years. Gain all the weight back slowly. My revision surgery was the best thing I ever did. Almost all the regained weight is off in just 6 months. And of course no vomiting and stick foods. Personally I think bypass is a better tool then the band even when my band was working - just my opinion. Happy belated St. Pat's to you!

9 years out and still going!

Same here. MGB works so much better than the band for me (though in 2001 nobody even talked about MGB here in Germany). I wish I hadn't postponed revision for so long. Seems like I'm not the only one though.

    weight loss with sleeve

Hi everyone I have hit a three month stall. I loose a kilo a month and it's frustrating in starting to consider revising to rny. Help I think I hv lost restriction. What else can I do
  23. I had my lap band removed a month ago today and will have my sleeve surgery on March 10th. I did great the first year and a half with my band and lost 80 lbs until my port was punctured after unfilling and refilling for a hysterectomy. Needless to say I hit a wall and couldn't lose and gained 50 lbs back. I ate minimal amounts and had restriction but couldn't lose. Will I be successful with sleeve or should I go rny? How has everyone else done with losing weight after revision from band to sleeve?
  24. Hi all. Just curious and wondered if anyone had similar experience that could offer input. I have Anthem BC/BS Ohio. I have a leak and surgeon wants to do a port replacement. Insurance said they needed a letter of medical necessity and that was sent last week. Anyone have the same situation and if so, how long did it take to get approval. According to Anthem's website and the rep I spoke with, this is covered under my plan. Thanks for the input!
