    Studies and Reports

I have two big concerns. The first is reflux/GERD. Now, I know not everyone gets it, and most people who do get it can control it with drugs. A nightmare scenerio for me would be to have a lifelong problem of uncontrolled/partially controlled reflux. What a nightmare scenerio - and a sizeable minority of sleeve patients have some degree of reflux. Anyway, there is some disturbing indication that people 3-6 years out start seeing an increase in that problem. My second big concern is leaks. I am a revision from the band, and have a higher risk of leaks. What is scary is that leaks are always bad, but some people's journey to recovery is especially hellish and long (like a year!!!). I have tried to pick an experienced surgeon and doing what I can to minimize the risk, but I had the band for a long time so have mounds of scar tisue. It is very hard to get an actual risk percentage for a revision patient, but it is more then 1%, the published rate for "virgin" sleevers, probably less then 10% rate based on what I hear. I have never seen a published study on the rate for revision patients though. In the end though, when i look at my overall situation... I realize that i am pushing 50, pre-diabetes, i have sleep apnea, i have arthritis is both knees and my feet are killing me.... if I keep this weight on I have a very very high chance of dying way too young and suffering alot from my comorbidities in the meantime. Heck, I am already suffering from joint and back (and feet!) pain. when you do the total risk assessment, for my situation, it seems like it is worth it to gamble on the sleeve and hope like heck I am in the majority that don't have major issues. I am looking forward to resuming being active in all the things I LOVE to do. It will be alot easier after i have lost 100-140 pounds.

    Post surgery follow up care

I had my RNY July 2, 2013. My Surgeon was great for surgery but...his bedside manners left sxo much to desire. He did mine and a attempted a revision from Band to RNY. His band had eroded intyo his liver so they couldn't finish the RNY. He ended up with abcesses and the DR dropped him right in the middle of everything. He was deathly sick for 10 months, 3 of which he doesn't even remember. I had Strictures (kind of like scar tissue) so I needed him to do 4 ENDOSCOPES with 3 dialations. He called us "THE PROBLEM CHILDREN"!!! So I fired him. I went to another Bariatric Center they performed my last endo with a dialation. Haven't had any more problems. Hubby eventually went to Mexico for his WLS. They don't offer aftercare either. (BAD CHOICE) Our PCP's are doing the extra bloodwork that is needed and then I have them fax it to the new Bariatric Center so if we have a problem they catch it. I have a list odf what they need to check so I don't need to travel 5 hours unless needed, Good Luck in your journey. Keep is posted on your progress.
  3. I got my band in 2006 and lost well over 100 pounds. My plan was, if the band didn't work for me, I would revise to the RNY. Now I have gained some of the weight back due to (unrelated health issues) an over fill, dilated pouch etc. When I decided on the band back then, it was purely financial, I was self-pay and had it done in Mexico. Had I been able to, I probably would have opted for the RNY because my BMI was over 60, however I was not willing to have that done in Mexico and the cost in the US was too high. Now I also am considering revising to the sleeve if I can't get my band to keep working for me. It is a tool and you do have to change your lifestyle period. Even with the RNY and the Sleeve they all involve a long-term commitment to changing your lifestyle or they won't work for you either.
  4. I started out with a band at 269 lbs, got down to 170 and am currently back up to 200. I'm starting the process of revising to the band but I'll only ("only" lol) have 50 or 60 lbs to lose. I'm reading everyone's amazing stories of weight loss with the sleeve but I'm wondering what I should be hoping for (trying to avoid the word 'expect') as far as weight loss. From what I was told with the band, the less you need to lose the slower it goes and I'm hoping it won't be TOOOOOOO slow. I'm doing the zombie 5K in november and I gotta get back to my jogging weight!
  5. Hi - I have had lap band surgery twice. 2005 and a revision and hieatal hernia repair in 2008. I always seem to form a pouch so I can eat as much as I want without any restriction. Then I go get an adjustment and the pouch dissolves, does anyone else have this problem. I use to be able to eat and then stop when I felt restriction, not any longer

    Band issues, curious.

Wow a lot has happened since your last post but it seems like things are moving in the right direction. I know I had the saline removed for about a month before the band was removed and there was still GERD pain and restriction. So hopefully you will know what is going on in there after your procedure tomorrow. That's wonderful that your endoscopy will be covered. Please let us know how that goes. I didn't have mine performed until after my band was removed so it sounds like they're doing something right! You're not the only one who is going through this or has gone through this after having smooth sailing for a while with the band and then suddenly "major comps". I'm sure there are plenty who can share their stories with you. I had no intention of revising to any other surgery but hadn't done as well as you had with your band. My 20 yo daughter had RNY done less than a year after my lap band and lost 150 lbs and after I put on a few lbs after my removal I started thinking maybe there was something out there that would help someone like "me" who seemed hopeless especially where the band was concerned. Anyway 8 months later I revised with the RNY. I hope things go well for you and that you are covered by insurance but that they fix the problem so that you will be healthy again. It can be a scary thing to be in a situation like this and there are a lot of people here to support you and wish you well! Good luck and keep us posted on how things go, Nancy.
  7. I finally had the information meeting with my prospective surgeon last Friday. I had really been looking forward to it - but left feeling deflated. I told him I was worried about not being able to walk with my rheumatoid arthritis if I can't take ibuprofen. He never answered me regarding that issue - just said the need for other RA meds would decrease. I also think I will need a lot of support after the surgery because I think it will be very difficult psychologically. He never mentioned a support group so I asked if they had one "yes, we do," was the only response - no additional information whatsoever. In general, I felt like he didn't really address my concerns, I got the feeling there would not be much after care. I have decided to get a consultation with another surgeon. I know that the one I went to is very talented surgically, but after the surgery I don't think he'll really be there. There was another patient there who wanted to schedule a band to sleeve revision and the Dr. told him he looked familiar - the patient said "you did my lap band and I saw you referred me for an EGD last month." Kind of felt like we were just warm bodies sitting there. Maybe I'm wrong- maybe that's how all surgeons are and I am just making excuses for my fear and second thoughts. My mom went with me and kept saying she was afraid I would become an alcoholic if I wasn't able to eat junk food, and that I would be even more unhappy being thin with sagging skin than being fat. I appreciate your thoughts
  8. Personally, I went with the sleeve because I did not like the idea of my intestines being re routed. Also, from what I read, there seems to be less complications, less need for vitamins long term, less issues with malabsorbtion and dumping. Also, with the sleeve, you can be revised to the by pass, or Dudial Switch at a later time if you feel it is not effective enough. I would discuss and research the pros and cons of both surgeries, and see what your surgeon suggests and why, but I am pretty sure most all of us here will be just a little more biased toward the sleeve Good luck on your journey whatever you choose!
  9. Anyone have the same problem and what did you do. First ".i will be self pay for revision from band to sleeve. I've heard most have to have a stress test before surgery. My problem is I have a torn cartridge in my knee and can't cycle or walk enough for a stress test....to do a medical stress test the cost is about 3-5k. I CAN'T afford that plus the surgery! I'm trying to find a solution so I can have the surgery. I'm looking for a surgeon in the DFW Texas area. I've heard good things about Dr. Manuel Castro and he specializes in revisions. Anyone with feedback on Dr. Castro or stress test problem? I haven't talked to Dr. Castro yet so I don't know if he requires the stress test....ohh and I'm over 50. Thank you for answering.
  10. Yes i am converting to RNY on april 16th i am taking all the meds i cant sleep with so many pillows but was able to sleep for a few hours in my chase lounge last night i will def try the benedryl tonight and as far as food ive barely been eating at all ive had toast with cream cheese and thats it for the past 2 days today im going to try just liquids only ...its just so frustrating because ive never had this problem and now 2 weeks before surgery im gonna go through hell ...im also worried now when i have the surgery im gonna cough like i am and hurt my new stomach right after surgery ....how long did it take to clear up after the revision?
  11. I am positive I am missing something here, lol. I registered at BariatricPal 7 years ago when I was getting a lap band. I am getting ready for revision to gastric bypass, but every time I try to search for something I get defaulted to the lap band forums. Is there a way to set preference? You would think I had never been on a forum before. Sheesh!
  12. I am one of the lucky bandsters where everything that could go wrong, went wrong! I got the band when I was 20 yrs old. Surgeon was horrible, had to have a port revision surgery when I was 21. Had the go around with fills... didn't have any for months when they thought they had, to overfilling me and taking everything out of my band. I had my band-sleeve conversion two weeks ago and I had so much scar tissue on my stomach and liver from the placement of the band that they couldn't do the sleeve because of the swelling. After 3 surgeries with the lapband I am finally going to have the sleeve on August 26! I am so happy and excited! I am 25 now and know this is just going to make my life so much better in the long run! My surgeon said the pain from my removal surgery is going to be pretty equivalent to the sleeve, but I'm not sure I buy it lol. How was everyone's pain level? Any advice for after surgery?

    Michigan?

Hi, I live in Detroit and my surgery is tomorrow morning. I'm having a revision from a band to a sleeve. Sent from my SM-T820 using BariatricPal mobile app
  14. I had surgery on 7/27. I had the lap band since 2002, so I was revised to the sleeve. My journey has been pretty smooth! I think having experience with the band help me with handling the sleeve. It is so important to eat slow and chew a lot. I find that if I have no distractions it is easier to concentrate and to make sure I'm not mindless eating. I have been weighing myself every morning, which I don't recommend :-) it drives you insane :-). Let me know if you have any questions, I would be happy to help if I can!
  15. I don't think the sleeve is to drastic. I had a revision on the 10th and the best thing that I could have done. The band is not forever and I believe that many over the years have complications and need it removed and it is also high maintenance. The sleeve is for life and no maintenance. Don't get me wrong it is a lifechanging surgery so you need to be prepared but in the long run the weight loss will overcome any obstacles.

    Band Getting Removed on 11/30

My doc has been extremely conservative with fills. That's good and bad. The good is that I've only been overfilled a couple of times in the past 3 years. The bad is that I have sometimes seen him as often as every 3 or 4 weeks trying to get it right. That's a whole lot of punctures to the port. I had unrelated surgery last summer and had to have all restriction removed. I've finally been able to have 2 fills and nothing seems to get me back to a point where I am losing weight. I'm seriously tired of the whole routine. So I've been thinking about either just having it removed or getting revision to a sleeve. That seems very drastic, but I've regained nearly all the weight I originally lost and the weight I lost due to the other surgery. So I've been reading the revision stuff and it sounded like maybe you were getting to the point where you might have to do something drastic too. I'm really glad that your doctor has been able to give you some relief! Hang in there.

    Anyone Sleeved August 14

I was sleeved on August 14 th but I had a revision from band to sleeve.
  18. I am 5 weeks out from surgery doing great! I had revision from a lap band to bypass. I am so glad to be free from the band after 9 years! I also have a high tolerance to pain so once I was home I did just fine. I needed no pain meds after week 2 and then I was just taking hydro codone at night. I have lost 30 lbs! Go for it! I was worth it!

    Pre Op Diet Question

Your liver sits on top of your stomach, so the surgeon needs to prop it up out of the way to get to your stomach. The smaller it is the less likely your liver will get damaged in surgery and it also provides more room to access the stomach and work properly - and quickly. Surgery is safer overall because of all this when the liver is smaller. I've heard stories of people waking up from surgery without the actual bariatric procedure being done because the patient's liver was too large to safely go ahead. After my two surgeries (lap band and revision) the first thing I asked after waking up was how my liver was because I was so worried about it. Both times I was told that my liver was perfect. I will stick to my pre-op diet again this time for the same reason. I want to do everything within my power to ensure a safe, complication-free surgery.
  20. x-ray chic, good luck with your surgery, I believe I am done with any thoughts of revision for myself but everyone has to make up their own mind. As I said so far my daughter has been successful at weight loss due to her RNY but it hasn't been an easy road without potholes. Right now I'm focusing on not dieting and being healthy and we'll see if I can get my band removed sometime in the future. Take care and good luck with your surgery, Nancy (brandyII & Nanook)

    Lap band to sleeve

@@shannon cruz acid reflux bad- take the band out and do the sleeve. i love, love, love my sleeve don't wanna burst your bubble but i was told that already having heartburn/acid reflux - this problem will usually continue or get worse just being honest from what i've heard someone on the board started off with the lapband - revision to sleeve - finally gastric RN y finally her heartburn is gone maybe your situation is different, if doc thinks sleeve is the way to go, great i would double check about the heartburn situation - since yours is so bad whatever your choice on which WLS - will be right for you good luck kathy
  22. Will I have 7 incisions one about 3 inches long Had a drain tube I had the lapband for one year And had problems with it So Jan 22,2013 had revision surgery so my new Me started that day!!! Doing well tired weak but getting better each day Still trying to get my liquids in ( harder with this Surgery) than with lapband but this revision surgery was more complicated So being 50 yrs old this April I guess that's another reason I'm slow But next week I think going to try aqua aerobics And go back to my tanning (it makes you feel better) Hope everyone is well!' God Bless
  23. As a band to bypass revision I think you are definitely making the right choice. I could tell you so much about the years of misery with my band and damage done by it. Feel free to message me if you want details.
  24. I don't know about others, but I chose VSG because; 1. It's a permanent change and you can eventually eat normal foods 2. Higher and quicker weight loss 3. Felt the LBS had way more complications than the VSG, which could cause increased follow up surgeries. 4. Did lots of research on both and my surgeon who I know from a previous hernia surgery recommended it for me. I don't look much at the mortality rates, they are very low comparatively and are a risk in any surgery. Recommend you look at the Lap Band revision category on this site. You may get a little more insight on why people are choosing the VSG
  25. Today is my first day of the 2 week pre-op diet leading up to my surgery on December 12th in Puerto Vallarta. I had a chocolate unjury shake for Breakfast, baked fish and veggies for lunch and I'll have a strawberry Unjury shake for supper. And tons of Water of course but I always drink a lot of water. I'm already quite hungry, but I'm still going strong. Lol. I'm open to any advice to help the 2 weeks a little easier. This is a revision (band to sleeve) surgery so I should be used to the pre-op diet but nothing prepares my tummy for the drop in calories. I hope everyone else is doing well on their diets. Kelly
