  1. I just had my two week post op apt Wednesday and asked the same questions. My surgeon told me cardio is fine now but core workouts like Pilates, TRX, barre should be at least 4-6 weeks out. I'll be going back to my weekly Pilates at 6 weeks out, starting back with a one on one with my instructor before going back to my group class. At our bariatric support group on Thursday, this also came up. The bariatric nurse from our local hospital was there and she said it is imperative that we get protein in before and after our workouts. I'm a little freaked out to go back to orange theory bc I can't seem to get all my water in and those workouts make me want to down water like crazy. I was thinking taking a protein water to orange theory with me. I think I may start walking my 3 mile loop for a couple weeks first and then hitting orange theory. I'll be three weeks out tomorrow and am definitely feeling like I'm not moving enough. 5'7 HW: 256 SW: 248 CW: 235 At 2 week post op GW: 150 Fantasy GW: 135 Sleeved 8/7
  2. I also feel your pain. I am 2 months post op and have had only 1 fill. I manage to keep my self full by drinking lots of water and eating high protien foods. There are some special bariatric diet foods out there (not sold at normal stores though) that are very filling. www.bariatricchoice.com This might be helpful if you can find a local person who sells it. I go for my second fill in January and can't wait! Good luck and it's a bumpy road but it'll pass...

    Anyone regret WLS and why?

It's amazing how much better I feel while I eat. For a minute there before I started taking it I literally thought to myself "all enjoyment of eating has pretty much vanished". Now it's back and I feel renewed. I was depressed for a few weeks about it, wondering why I did this to myself. It sucks to be tethered to a drug forever but I'll take it. Prilosec is one of the most effective, safe drugs out there. Especially when you take it with a probiotic since PPI's usually disrupt your good bacteria in your stomach.
  4. My favorite chew has been the Bariatric Advantage calcium chew. I eat 6 a day, but do split them up as to have 2 per major meal time. Be careful not to take them with iron because calcium and iron, when taken together, cancel out the benefits of each. The Kirkland chews are yummy, but they are also made of calcium carbonate rather than calcium citrate. Calcium carbonate is not absorbed as well and most doctors recommend taking calcium citrate. This is a shame because calcium carbonates from Costco (Kirkland) taste really good and are far less expensive considering the amount of chews required by WLS patients. I order my chews from a supplier on Amazon and this is really convenient as it comes right to my door. I believe I purchase a new order every week or 1.5 week. It adds up, but is a small price to pay considering the many benefits of being healthy.

    Lost all motivation

I'm so sorry that happened. And I know how much hurtful words from your spouse can really shake one at their core. Could you find a marriage counselor who does online video calls? I think therapy is the only viable option to get to the root of what's going on. Or maybe a bariatric surgery support group for partners. Someone had mentioned that he may feel threatened by your weight loss. That is not an uncommon problem; especially if the partner is insecure. Maybe try to build up his security. Men normally respond to verbal praise. For example, in the first few weeks after my surgery, my husband was a very grumpy person to be around. When I commented on it, he blew up and said how overwhelmed he felt with work, taking care of a large portion of the home responsibilities, that it's been all about me and my recovery, and a few other things. I took some time to process, and in the right timing, I thanked him for all he's doing and told him that it did not go unnoticed. I reassured him and built him back up. Since then, things have been going really well. Your therapist may have some other ideas.
  6. I am sorry that you are having so much trouble with your insurance company. Do you have the coverage on your insurance policy to have bariatric surgery? If not, there is no amount of comorbidities that will make it happen. If this is the case then you would have to be a self pay as I was. If you do have the coverage and your surgeon's office isn't willing to help then you need to seriously get a different doctor. That is the start of a surgeon's office that I wouldn't want to deal with. Look around for a different doctor and see if they are willing to work with you. If you have the coverage don't stop looking! Best of wishes!!
  7. Thanks to those who responded kindly and respectfully. I should have been more clear: I was not looking for medical advice here, but rather to know if different plans allowed different things. The bariatric community seems to be a large one and there are always differences in plans. My question was if this was one where everyone agreed or were there some of you out there who had a different approach given by your doctors before approaching my dr/nut with my question. Obviously I'd never dream of harming myself by not following medical orders. But reading these responses I see there is no point in even giving them a call, bec there seems to be a unanimous approach to this in the greater community. Thanks, all.

    Mexico Vs. The US

Hi Brandy, I was initially going to go to MX, but I read about my surgeon (Dr. Kirshenbaum) on here. I had to fly from NC to Denver, CO, but in the end it was worth it. He's in your price range. I just weighed my options and had I not found him I'm pretty sure I would have gone to MX. Dr. K's website is Lap Band Surgery in Denver Colorado | Lap Band Surgeon in Denver | Gastric Band Surgery Denver | Bariatric Surgery and there is a huge thread in the Doctor's room. Good luck w/your decision.

  10. Vitamins, minerals and other dietary supplements are important for staying healthy when you’re a bariatric surgery patient. Not every patient receives the same advice and some patients don’t know the best options. This forum is a great place to let everyone know which bariatric supplements YOU take. Can you please take a few minutes to share which dietary supplements you take? Thanks for spreading the word! 1. Do you take a bariatric daily multivitamin/mineral supplement? Which brand and formulation specifically? For example, you might take Centrum for Women or One a Day Women’s Active Metabolism. 2. Which bariatric vitamins and minerals do you take each day? What is the brand and formulation of each? For example, you might take Puritan’s Pride Calcium Magnesium Vitamin D or Nature Made Iron 65 mg (ferrous sulfate). 3. Which other supplements (including herbals) do you take, and what brands are they? For example, you might take Nordic Naturals Ultimate Omegas fish oil.
  11. I bought comprehensive Bariatric multivitamins from Health Foods Unlimited, they taste ok and met the nutritional guidelines the nutritionist gave me.
  12. I am so disappointed - the bariatric coordinator told me when we spoke two weeks ago that she had everything and was going to submit for approval from my insurance company that day. I called today just to double check and see if any progress had been made with the approval. When I called today I got the other bariatric coordinator who told me that they had not even submitted! She looked at my file and said that indeed everything was set to be submitted and she wasn't sure why it had not been submitted already. She is going to submit tomorrow and now I will begin the waiting game all over again. This isn't the first time this girl has dropped the ball either.... My husband called the office because I was so upset and they weren't super nice to him although I heard the conversation and he was calm and not hostile or rude at all. I'm afraid they will now purposely delay it longer. Has anyone ever switched doctors at this point? Would they give all my information to another's doctors office? Any advice is appreciated!!!

    OMG! I'm FREAKING out!

You're on the right track for calming down. Support groups, either here on-line or in person are great for letting us voice our anxiety, which all of have if we allow ourselves to admit it. I went to a support group meeting at my Hospital three days before my surgery (they have a weekly meeting for a bariatric patients) and it did wonders for me just letting me talk to others getting ready and those that were figuring out their new lives. I wish you nothing but good luck with your surgery, and many, many good healthy years to come...
  14. Yes, I frequently either feel like fattest person in the room except for when I go to bariatric meetings then I'm the skinny B who doesn't belong. I was told by a bbw that I am her after & why was I perusing wls. Yea... Still got 100# to lose. I'd be you in 5 years w/ 150 to lose if I hadn't done this now. I decided it was someone elses turn to be the fattest person in the room/ in the family etc. I'm tured of being the fat friend/fat cousin/ fat school mate etc. allons-y
  15. My one experience with the ER after surgery (4 days after) I learned they don't know a lot about bariatric patients. While I was in the ER I called my surgeon and told him where I was and what was going on. He contacted a pulmonologist who he knew was in the hospital that day to come see me. He also added a test or two to the ones the ER doctor ordered to make sure the problems I was having weren't related to the surgery. I agree with the poster above -- raise some hell with as many doctors as you need until you get some help. You shouldn't have to be suffering.

    Long Island Doctors Wanted

I used Dr. Ahmad from Mather. First, it a bariatric center of excellence. Second, I checked his background, no lawsuits, no leaks, etc. He and his wife are very nice people. When you are going through the approval process, you need to pick someone close because doing the pre-op is like a part-time job. I would recommend him, although I think his practice is expanding so much, there is office waits & clerical errors (like same last name, apt confusion.) But, his surgical background and how many times he has done this far surpasses any of those other things.

    Waiting To Exhale...

First I would call insurance company myself to find out all the steps for yourself. If you contract a popular bariatric surgeons office they will guide you through everything. They are allot of help. You won't know the requirements until you call. Sounds like your pcp don't know what he is talking about. Go from there, might not take as long as you think. Good luck to you.

  21. My dietician told me to stay away from those protein "shots" as well. Same reasoning - the collagen protein is not absorbed as well. I'm almost 2 weeks out, and I've been using Premier premade (Costco) and lots of different kinds of protein powders to mix with milk and/or water. My favorites so far are the Syntrax Nectar packets - all kinds of fruit flavors that go really well with water and ice. Much lighter texture than some of the others, plus they're a great break from vanilla and chocolate. I order mine as a sample pack from BJ's Bariatrics - that way you can choose the flavors you want. They have quick shipping, too. Hope this helps.
  22. I have been using Bariatric Advantage High Protein Meal Replacement Banana, Orange Cream & Iced Latte and there pretty good not super sweat and mix pretty well.
  23. Well, I have been on this site since my PCP referred me to the Bariatric Clinic at Loyola University in August. My day has FINALLY come. I have to be at surgery intake at 5:30 in the morning 12/23/2013. I am the first surgery of the day. Doctor said I will probably be discharged on Tuesday evening or Christmas morning. My insurance - BCBS Federal generously pre-approved up to five days! Hopefully, I won't need them. So far on the pre-op diet and 7 days of liquid diet, I have lost 27 pounds. I can't wait for this time next year to see how different my health and life will be. Happy holidays to all of you......see you on the other side. So, cover me...I'm going in.
  24. I am so sorry to read your story and I so commiserate with you. My story was no where near the same as far as specifics but similar in that I think a lot of the bariatric surgeons and their staff (people associated with the bariatric practice) treat us as cattle to be fed through the chutes. I think they handle so many more people than a regular surgical practice does that we are just nameless, faceless cattle. As an example, my doctor thought when I went in for my post-op visit that I was there for my pre-op visit. Partially, this is the medical practice anymore, but specifically it is true in this type practice. No wonder you or any of us feel like we are "boiling." Anyone does when they feel they have no power in a situation and that is certainly where you are right now -- no power to effect a change in the situation, no power to effect a change in her and the way she does things, and no power to change the way the doctors do things as you and the rest of us are just one of MANY who will put up with most anything to get the surgery. And, let's not even talk about the insurance companies . . . . . My thoughts are with you and I certainly hope things work out for a quick, positive resolution to this situation. Keep us all posted.
  25. Can anyone tell me if they submitted for the bariatric choice vitamins for low income? If so, about how long before you received your shipment. My doc sent off today and surgery date is Oct 5th. Would like to be sure I have vitamins on hand.
