Is there usually a pre op diet?
Pixie Dust replied to marfar7's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Really?? Wow...I want to go to your doctor then! I'm supposed to lose 15 lbs prior (if I could lose weight, why would I consider something this drastic is my thought) & on a liquid diet the week prior to surgery! I really don't know how I'm going to do that. Really don't. -
I was banded 10.28.09 Is this normal?
Astrasmom replied to feliciaj's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
The hungry is called "Bandsters Hell". Try very hard not to give into it and eat only those portions that your doctor told you to eat. Try eating things higher in Protein and waiting longer to drink after you eat. Eat some white chicken in a can with a little olive oil mayo, Flaky fish (flounder, tuna, salmon), ricotta cheese, and All natural Peanut Butter. Those have helped me. As for the peeing, it's because when you lose weight it comes out as Water. It's nothing to be alarmed about. That's how your body flushes all of the toxins out of your body (toxins and fat). Also make sure that you ARE drinking at least 64oz of fluids a day. That includes your Protein Shakes. My nutritionist also allowed me to have 8oz of protein shakes 3 times a day instead of the 4oz. She said that I can have the 2 shakes and if I am really hungry, that I can have the 3 shakes. Ask your doctor. -
sleeved 2/28/13 @188 anyone else?
novam vitam replied to emilyim19's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
That's still 20 pounds! And it's not coming back... I am currently at your pre weight. (Surgery tomorrow) and I think of all the times I've lost weight before and how good I felt and of course inevitably, how defeated I felt as the pounds crept back on.... Those numbers on that scale and in your closet are just going to keep getting smaller and smaller! Be proud. If your doctor complains about that, poke him in the eye! -
I think everyone is given a liquid pain medicine of some sort. Your stomach is not able to breakdown the pill/ or the doctor does not want it to even try, for at least a week after surgery. You may be able to get something to crush up, but it is usually a nasty tasting liquid. Ask the pharmacy to add flavor. May help a little. Sleeve Date: March 28, 2013 Weight on surgery date: 281 First Goal 50lbs: July 13, 2013 (231)

First Stall, Getting Discouraged :(
aliandrews replied to mariemadeline's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hey, I had my surgery on December 7th and have lost 43 pounds. I lost 21 pounds that first month, but I did have a stall by the third week. I was annoyed. I am still losing and sometimes I go a week without losing weight. I know it is frustrating, but you are going to lose the weight. You seem to have done well so far. You just need to keep doing what you are doing. Maybe lay off the crackers. My surgeon has me on 400-600 calories until I lose 75% of my weight. I guess some doctors are different with what they want others to do. -
Tomorrow, tomorrow, I'm gonna be sleeved tomorrow!! I'm excited. Excited to get it over with. Excited about this new chapter in my life. Excited about what my life is going to look like once I lose the weight and hopefully the compulsion it's driven me to eat.

So why did we need surgery to do this?
VSGAnn2014 replied to Kindle's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I'm not long into this yet -- almost 10 months, and have already hit goal and lost 5 pounds below that now. Maintenance is new to me -- about 1-1/2 months now. For me, the difference seems to be: 1. Less hunger -- the "lot less ghrelin" factor has been a big deal for me. 2. Restriction -- that's still a big deal for me, too. As we all know, the restriction is less than it used to be. But it's quite functional at this point. 3. New habits -- boy, do I have a lot of good, new habits: eating slower, chewing longer, planning my daily menus, recording my food intake, weighing daily. I'm even grooming myself better -- brushing teeth 2X daily, doing better skin care, getting dressed every day, wearing makeup, getting my hair done on schedule, etc. 4. I can move more now -- and, boy, do I move more! Weighing 90 pounds less has made me MUCH more energetic. I simply could not move much at all a year ago. And all that moving is burning calories. I'm cleaning house, walking, exercising, gardening, shopping more, and everything else you can imagine. 5. Elevated mood. I'm not nearly as depressed as I was a year ago when I weighed 90 pounds more, I was in physical pain, I was a functional agoraphobic (I could fly cross-country, but refused to go to the local Wal-Mart). And now I'm simply not pissed, embarrassed, afraid, etc. I am so much happier. Skinnier Me = Happier Me = Skinnier Me. 6. Seeing a shrink has helped. I've never seen a shrink before, but at my PCP's urging started doing so when I started my WLS journey. He's helped me stay quite focused on the right stuff. No big trauma in my past has been uncovered. But I've explored the factors associated with my past failures in caring for myself in the past and ways I can change those patterns. That's all been very helpful. So far, for me, this has all been a dynamic dealio in that everything above seems to feed everything else. Put another way, when everything is working well, everything works well. When everything sucks, everything sucks. And according to my shrink, people who've reached goal risk regaining when they don't keep changing their goals, e.g., we lost weight -- now what? Get fitter? Leverage our new health to start our dreamed-for career? Human beings don't "stand still" very comfortably. ... anyway, those are some thoughts from my point of view. Kindle, I hope you can find some peace in all this chaos thrust upon you. I'd love to "poof" you better, but I can't find my wand right now. ;( -
Major rave for my husband. We have been together for nearly 20 years and he's witnessed my weight difficulties first hand. He's been through a million diet attempts with me. I'm a month from surgery and he's become my biggest cheerleader. The other day he said we should start saving money for all of the new skinnier clothes I'm going to need. And he said at some point I may want to get a boob lift if the girls are too saggy for me. I know this surgery scares him, but he's starting to get excited about how healthy I'm going to become and how much happier I'll be. I also think he secretly is excited that I'll want to go to Disney with him more!

I suspect that while you were in the hospital, you had an I.V. hooked to you. This pumped fluids into your body. As a result you probably left the hospital weighing more then when you first entered. It takes a few days for you to shed this added weight and get back to your pre-surgery weight. So give it a little time.

First of all, take a deep breath and calm down. I had my bypass on August 19th and I have suffered from severe clinical depression for 55 years (I will be 61 on Oct 3rd). I have been back to the hospital 2 times for severe UTI and gained weight with all those fluids they pumped into me both times. You WILL lose this weight. It's only been 6 days. Your body is still in shock and will be for some months to come. You WILL lose weight. In 5 weeks i have lost 30 lbs. Are you seeing a therapist to help you through? I've been seeing one for the last 6 months to help me through this process. Plus, I have image problems I need to get through (I have lost 60 lbs pre-op and post-op, yet in my mind i see no difference ... just a very fat woman). But I am getting better. Depression makes this journey so much harder, but we CAN get through it. Stay POSITIVE! Stay COMMITTED! Get your weight taken and take measurements. I may not see any difference in my body, but I know in my mind I have lost 20+ inches, and that keeps me going. I have started fitting into the clothes I have outgrown and that keeps me going. Other people notice a difference and that keeps me going. Give yourself some time, hon. You didn't get where you are all at once and it won't disappear all at once. Be patient. Drinking the shakes you can't help but lose weight. When you get further down the road you can start exercising, which not only helps with weight loss but helps you feel better, too. If there is anything I can do or if you ever want anyone to talk to, give me a shout. We Libra's gotta stick together!! (((BIG HUG)))

So why did we need surgery to do this?
Andrew0929 replied to Kindle's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I've been at goal for about 8 months and holding steady. However, I'm snacking more and taking in more carbs yet I'm not gaining. I work out 6 days/week and log all food. At 2200/2300 calories I'm still not gaining. Don't want to push my luck on this but it seems like my metabolism has changed since the surgery, in addition to the much-needed restriction. -
So why did we need surgery to do this?
OKCPirate replied to Kindle's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
There are tons of reasons why this works for 80% of those who do it and why behavior modification alone works for less than 8%...Two big ones Biological reason: Long term obesity changes the body. It creates systems to support the fat that end up killing you. Insulin spikes, extra coritisol, creating less testosterone. All these cascade into a nearly unwinnable war against weight. Behavioral habits: We all have them. food is soothing. It was a way of dealing with stress. It is in our memories of good times. The surgery changes the hormones, allowing weight loss to happen. It is a tool to help us break behavioral habits. It is only a tool. You still have to eat the right stuff and move. But it is a great tool. -
I was banded on May 1st and hit my first plateau on May 11th. I was sssssooooooo disappointed. But the good news is, after three weeks of a plateau, I finally started losing again. I lost 6 lbs last week. I read on another post that you should concentrate on your Water and Protein and boy did it make a difference. I was very sincere about documenting my food and water intake making sure to get between 60 and 80 grams of protein everyday. I noticed that I was eating more calories by watching the protein but the weight just flew right off. That's my new plan, FOCUS, FOCUS, FOCUS on protein and water. To date I have lost 18.5 lbs and can't wait to weight again soon. Good luck to all.

Good for you!! Lingerie is my biggest weakness. Like some women are into designer shoes, I've been known to blow small fortunes on lingerie. When I was fat, it was in an effort to compensate for the flaws and I really got into corsets and suspenders. Now that I've lost weight, I can get all the pretty bra and knicker sets again (AND more corsets and suspenders coz I just LOVE those!!). I've spent WAY too much on lingerie in the last couple of months. I did have a try at buying from Target because I was so excited to finally fit into their bra sizes, but I have to say, I don't like their quality. I ended up back at my favourite lingerie shop, Silk Elegance, last week and managed to spend $850  over 2 days there!! OMG, can you say addiction?? :scared2: I did get some seriously sexy outfits though and have to say that the boyfriend's reaction to them made it all worth it!

Gained weight!
Nancy Rivers replied to Nancy Rivers's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thanks Tiffykins. Yeah, I'm sure it will come off, but I never expected to see a gain. A stall, yes, but gain no. Oh well... -
I can relate, I gained 2 or 3# around that same time frame too and it came off within the week. Be patient and keep doing what your doing.
-
Gawd. I'm still losing the Water weight I gained from IV fluids and now I'm expecting to stall 2-3 weeks out? That will give me 1 week of losing this month. I feel cheated out of my 1st month of significant loss. So not fair. <petulant foot stomp>

Oh Lord :/ That's my whole reasoning for wanting a revision is that for the life of me I can't loose anything after getting the liquid out I've gained 15lbs and now that I have liquid put back in I can't even loose the 15lbs I gained!! apart from having some minor issues with my bad. Firecrackers...how we doing?
Heather~ Sweetdreams replied to Bemabound's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hey Tracy! I think a lot of people have stalls, and then there are a few of us that just keep on trucking. I am super glad I am in the latter group, except, I'm having skin issues already, and I still have 80 pounds to goal. I started out at 310, and hit 250 on Saturday! I'm thrilled with my weight loss, but not so much about the loose skin. Keep your chin up, you're doing great!!! -
glynda.... Look for wasabubblebutt, she went to him about a year ago and is doing fantastic... she met her goal weight in 10 months and goes back to him for her fills.... Good luck to you.....

Thanks for the well wishes! @Staci, I am in Castle med ctr on Oahu. Please try not to worry too much, the nurses are here to help you & will manage your pain. It's a very distant memory for me already. @sherry sounds like u r doing great! I have no doubt all the fluids have added temp weight but that's cool; I won't weigh for a week. Dr came & said all is well. I did 1 oz water & now working on 1 oz broth. It is relish! Onward!

15 LBS FROM GOAL/SLOWER LOSER/NEW BOOBS!
DEZ1975 posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hi Everyone! Just wanted to check back in at 9 months post op to say life is FABULOUS! I had my sleeve in Aug 2012 and had a complication free experience. Aside from occasional nausea, I haven't experienced any real negative side effects. I work out 5 times a week with weights and cardio. I had a breast reduction and lift on Friday and I can't believe how amazing I feel. I started my journey at 5'6" 235 lbs. I'm now 160, with a goal weight of 145. I've attached updated pics, although they are pre breast reduction. So, now I look and feel slimmer. Anyhow, just wanted to share a positive, complication free experience. Dr. Mueller in San Diego is excellent! Good luck everyone! Oh and take your vitamins!! -
I had my surgery in April of '09 and have gotten down to 149 pounds (which according to my doctor, because of my frame and muscle mass, 150 was supposed to be rock bottom). Anyway, my husband and I had no problem conceiving our first child (he was quite a surprise actually!) yet we've been trying since September for our second with no such luck yet. I'm trying to be patient, but don't want our kids too far apart in age either, you know? We've been tracking ovulation and while I have an atypical cycle (25 days with an 11 or 12 day luteal phase) I didn't think we would have any problems. I won't know for certain until Monday, but I have a feeling this month won't be it either. So long story short, how many people have had difficulty conceiving a second child after surgery? Is it the weight loss? Cycle change? I just turned 30 so I doubt it is age. Thanks for your input!

Well you already answered your own question about doing it on your own.. " I do not trust myself to be able to lose 100 plus lbs. on my own." So now it's all about loose skin and "easy way out" There is nothing easy about this. Anybody that has gone through this surgery will tell you this. This is a tool to HELP you lose weight but it will not do all the work. Loose skin? Well what looks better smaller and a little loose or keeping the fat to keep it somewhat taut? I had this surgery to get healthy not win any modeling contests. My hope was to get off meds and I said I'd be happy to look ok in clothes. Yes I've got loose skin.. Meh... I'm not on high blood pressure meds I HAD planter fasciitis not anymore So you need to do what's good for your health, know that though you won't look perfect, You will be healthier happier and mobile Isn't that what's important?

I have United, they are a pain. Keep working on the insurance approval and follow exactly what they want. I started at 370, did my 6 months in which I was definitely expected to lose (modified South Beach Diet for 4 months then I ate like it was my last meal! I stayed at about 310 for last couple months.) My surgery was Dec. 10 lost about 37 since then, My goal is to be under my college weight of 227. I am at 269 this morning when I stepped on my home scale before getting dressed. United wants you to prove to them that you are serious about losing weight and that you will keep at it. They require you to go to Diet Dr. or equivalent every month. It was a great way to get used to bariatric foods. I found I could eat plain nonfat greek yogurt with Peanut Butter powder, fresh fruit, or even diet maple syrup mixed in. I learned how to eat 60 grams Protein a day and to follow a tight diet while walking a bunch. I was worried about losing too much, but that is unlikely. My Dr. told me that if I started losing too much she'd put me on a Golden Corral diet for awhile. I also think United wants people to re-consider if they are doing really well on their own diets and NOT get WLS.
