    Weight loss pre-op

I've been on the liquid only diet for 10 days now. I've lost about 7 lbs.

    Hypothyroidism to hyperthyroidism from weightloss

I am glad to see this post. I lost my weight and was just yesterday diagnosed with hyperthyroidism. Picking up my meds today. Any advice you can offer me would be great. I am within 10 pounds of goal and trying to take the last 10 off. Hyper doesn't seem to be helping me any.

    Staples

I can't say for bypass, (I had the SADI laproscopic) but I imagine healing is similar. I had my post-op and staples out at 10 days. One of the areas where a port was opened back up a bit after they were pulled so we just did steri-strips for another few days. The rest were well healed.

    Staples

@@Band07 @aelovelady Each surgeon is different I had staples used to close the port sites (external). Just like I had staples when I had both C-Sections. @Allenby I think at 22 days you may run the risk of the skin healing to the staples. I would definitely call and ask to have them out sooner. Most of mine sutures were healed by the 10 day mark (my appt was moved up because the doc had a schedule change) they were intially going to be removed at 13 days. I would think by 15 you would be well healed. As for scarring there is a product called Mederma that works pretty well on reducing the appearance of scars. You can start applying it once the staples are out and the wound is completely closed. It takes a few months (2x/day) but it does work. I used it following a knee surgery I had years ago and I'm currently using it on my scars and my daughter's scar under her chin.

    Smoking...

Hi there, You need to find a way, try nicotine batches or nicotine chewing gum. It's very essential to stop the smocking a couple at least 10 days before your operation. when you smoke, all the cilia in your lungs becomes inactive, therefore leading to accumulation of all the dirt and sputum in your lungs. During the operation, you will receive a medication that will dry up all your secretions in your body (saliva and Sputum), so after the operation will feel like having cement inside of your lungs, you'll be coughing trying to expectorate the sputum. So the easiest way to prevent this is STOP SMOKING. Couple of days after you stop, you're cilia will become functional again, and will start cleaning up the lungs, and you'll be going to your operation more in ease. Try also to secure a couple of days before your operation an incentive spirometer, a respiratory device that you will be using much after you go to your room. Getting it before the operations, will allow your lungs to expand, loose all the secretions you have in the lungs, and spiting it out. Good luck

    Eating Disorders and WLS

Wow, I just read some of these and it feels like how I was years ago. I went to a eating disorder clinic for bulimia which I conquered the bulimia only to end up trading it for binge eating which is not good (trading another bad habit for another) either and it seems I should go back but can't because I am in the process of doing the health insurance thing all over again. So I seriously hope to get through everything and be a much happier and healthier me, I think this life change is a good one but a very stressful one. The last time I was super skinny was between 10-11 and ever since then I would yo yo between pants sizes. I feel the effect of bulimia really bad, I started when I was 9 years old and been on and off of bulimia ever since and just conquered it recently (2014). I just want to get rid of my binge eating for good and just eat healthier and stop doing this bad stuff to myself. Okay, that's all I have to say.
  8. I for one have had way more success using the models of 'behavioral modification' of my 'Sport Eating' habit AKA overeating/eating till full/etc, than the wide variety of other approaches over the decades. From 60s era meds & later counseling/hypnosis/more meds, always weighed more each year than the year before. Graduated high school 1963 at 269. Topped at 373 before ever hearing of WLS. Last week I was within 10# of that, thanks to Lap Band & the various efforts via tips/comments/discussion/education here. I'm certain there's a component of 'eating disorders' if not an entire hotel with multiple rooms & hallways as I've stumbled down many varieties attributable to such. I also am convinced some substances, such as high fructose corn syrup, creates some kind of mental/emotional debility that triggers a massive binge of overeating, like hives or an asthma attack for someone with that kind of issue. In the end, whatever I may label my eating situation, I find WHEN 'eating behavior' is controlled by rational process, I have success and move toward my goal.

    Just had surgery on 12/15

I'm telling you!! Tomorrow is a week post op, I can't even start a full liquid diet until day 10, and won't start soft foods until day 15. [emoji30] It's always so interesting to see how different doctors have different plans... I'm not physically hungry, but mentally I feel like I'm struggling with all the liquids.. Sent from my Pixel 4 XL using BariatricPal mobile app
  10. .I wasn't insinuating that anyone stop using MFP...I still use it and LOVE it. It just tells me little white lies at times when it says that I will be a specific weight in 5 weeks if I keep it up....hehe! There are many parts of this journey that really make us wonder about our choice!!! hair loss and working so hard for what seems to be NOTHING really stink. Just keep reminding yourself it is the ultimate goal that will make it all worthwhile. I was convinced that I would be some "poster-child" for WLS...wrong. Everything started off great....20 pounds lost pre-op and 50 more pounds lost in 3 months post-op. Then.....everything changed. At first, my weight loss just slowed down and then halted. I was doing everything right. I was using MFP (which was apparantly lieing to me, because I was not losing what I was told), doing over 60 minutes of cardio a day, eating right, taking my vitamins!!! It look me nearly 3 months to lose another 10 pounds...crazy! I just recently started to have some steady weight loss again, so there is some hope. My hair loss has halted. Try to concentrate on your ultimate goal, stay positive and remember why you did this in the first place. Best of luck to you!! LOL! I thought I was the only one who was going to be a poster child for WLS! I'm using MFP too - should I stop?
  11. Today I stepped on the scale and it showed I lost some weight. Instead of being excited my mind instantly thought okay I can eat this fatty food for lunch. WHAT! My mind instantly wanted to cheat all because the scale was whispering, you lost some more weight. It is like wrestling with the devil. I won't reach my goals if I eat every time the scale shows I'm down--I will just yo yo. Repeating to myself--Be Strong and Ignore the Scale. Had lapband surgery 10/12/16

Scared of transition to soft food

Thanks for all of the replies. I did talk to Amy - MacMadam's and my dietician. She suggested scrambled eggs, homemade pureed chicken Soup, Danon Light Yoghurt, and Trader Joe's Greek Yoghurt. She said its okay to stay on liquids for a while longer too. Besides not knowing if soft food might get stuck, I am also having diarrhea. (Sorry to mention something unpleasant.) I was partially lactose intolerant before surgery. Amy said this is not uncommon even if you aren't lactose intolerant for the first month after surgery. About half of the stuff I bought has "milk Protein concentrate" in it which is only 80% milk protein. The rest is lactose, fat, and other milk stuff. Oh Boy! "whey protein isolate" is 90% whey protein. In getting to the isolate step they purposely try to remove the lactose and fat. So even though they can't call it lactose free, it has very little. The "whey protein isolate" products would be the Syntrax nectar. Not my favorite, but a couple of flavors are palatable. I prefer not to go to soy protein because soy protein has a nasty taste to me. I guess I will try some yoghurt tonight :001_tt2: since the Lactobacillus have taken care of the lactose for me. I can't complain too much: I've lost 19 pounds in 2 weeks! Best wishes,

Elton John to Toys in the Attic at age 14

I desperately love Aerosmith too. I was 15 and my mom and dad got me the greatest hits cd to go with my new cd player (was a big deal 10 years ago). Steven Tyler spoke to me and I've been in this love affair ever since, can I say it was one particular song? I doubt it, as soon as I type one in, I will think of another. I have lost boyfriends because they couldn't handle my devotion for Aerosmith (it's a five-guy band, intimidating for a lesser man, i suppose). Anyways, my now-husband was a then-supporter of my infatuation. Since I have been married, my love for Aerosmith has evolved enough to allow other bands and men in, Johnny Cash, anyone? But it took a good manly husband's "whatever floats your boat" attitude. I love Eric with all my heart now, but Steven will always be my first crush.

    Post -Op time off work?

I planned to go back 10 days (calendar days) after surgery. I am pretty hardy usually but the surgery, adjusting to eating, and need for afternoon naps made it too hard. I went back at 18 days and felt like that was soon enough. It was nice to take a little time to adjust to my new life with out a lot of onlookers. I have had very few if any bumps in the road. I am at 12 weeks.
  15. @costalchick don't even listen to the Debbie downers they have no idea what we go through on a daily basis. And people who even tell me "oh I heard this or oh I heard that " do to even know what it feels like to be overweight and have knee pain. That's why I pick and choose who I want to tell. I am super nervous having second thoughts but I spoke to a friend of my cousins who had the surgery 10 years ago and said it was the best thing she did and even though her family was supportive she said they made her write a goodbye letter to her son!! She's laughing about it now. She Said second guessing your decision is normal and she had the same thoughts but everything will turn our ok. So I am keeping positive and focused on my liquids until the next 6 days I want this day to come and pass quickly and be done and over with already. One thing I am nervous and anxious is if my dr will actually do the rny.. Since I have a band he needs to remove he has to see how much scar tissue I have. So he said if I have too much he will just remove my band and let my stomach heal for 6 months ... But I am keeping my fingers crossed because I want this done at once I don't want to have to go through all this nervousness again. Even though he doesn't sound too positive I know it is better to under promise than over promise so I am keeping positive. Good luck to you and keep me posted !!

Too much liquid 5 days Post Op?

I think everyone has a different threshold for discomfort. My surgery was a week ago. I've been trying for the last 10 hours to drink my three 4 oz Protein shakes and my 64 oz of Fluid. I have 8 more ozs to go. I cannot take two sips back to back or my stomach will spasm. I cannot take a large swallow. It takes me 1 hour to get that damn 4 oz of protein down. Not everyone spasms. I do. The doctor said it will go away. I can say that I honestly do not want to eat or drink one bite because it is uncomfortable. However, I am a wimp. I don't tolerate pain very well. You all might just have a higher pain threshold than me and can tolerate more fluids. I wouldn't worry about it at all. Good luck!
  18. I WISH I would feel less restriction and I'm 9+ months out!!! I don't get what my problem is- Last night I ate small slices of steak, and after about 3 maybe 4 ounces I thought I was going to possibly rupture my esophagus-the pain was horrible and my mouth filled up with saliva like right before one is about to vomit. I was really shaken by the experience which lasted about 15 minutes then, thank God, subsided. Today, I could hardly eat even soft warm cereal (had to throw out half of it) Later I had a teaspoon of tuna, followed by 2 tortilla chips, chewed well and then a Greek blueberry yogurt. Three quarters of the way through the yogurt I felt like my esophagus would explode and I stood up in pain. How much longer can I take this? I'm 10 lbs away from goal (135)-at this rate I'll keep losing weight!!! I'm so freaked out about this already. By now I would figure I'd be able to at LEAST feel comfortable eating small portions but instead even the small stuff is giving me pain. WHEN DOES It get BETTER? My bougie is a 40 for goodness sake!

Murphy can take his damn law and shove it

I wanna hear about the next disaster. I wanna hear all about the visit of your ghastly in-laws. You realise that this hideous sequence of horrors could be spun into gold, it could be engineered into an absolutely hilarious movie script. Should you do this and find yourself beyond stinking rich, think of Green and remember to toss her a certain percentage of your wealth. I am thinking of something around 10%, eh.

  22. An update-- My second appointment with the dietitian went well. She had me start using the My Fitness Pal app again, and I lost about 10 pounds in the month between appointments. (Then I got cocky and started "saying goodbye" to foods... now I'm back on track) After seeing the psychologist again, she talked with the therapist I'd started seeing on a weekly basis and decided to clear me for surgery. I plan to continue therapy for as long as it takes to get my head in a good place--and I will probably keep going occasionally after that to keep myself in check. I'm really happy with the therapist I'm working with--I've been to others, and I never felt like they got to the root of my problems like she has been able to do. I have some really deep-seated issues with perfectionism, all-or-nothing thinking, being hyper-critical of myself--things that have ironically lead to, among other problems, my obesity. Anyway, I got through all the other testing--bloodwork, EKG, chest x-ray--and got just insurance approval today. My surgery date is June 15th! Really excited but also starting to freak out!
  23. Hello everyone. I haven't posted for a while. I hope you are all doing okay. I am at the stage post op where I can have all textures of foods. Problem is I don't really have a specific plan to follow, and it is difficult to stick to the diet when there aren't specific instructions. I've found that now that I can eat, I want to eat everything. Being hungry for the 3 weeks ppre-op, and then the past 4 weeks post op was difficult, and I think now that I am able to eat anything, I want EVERYTHING. I did not do well during the mushies stage, and in fact, I had a lot of high calorie puddings and yogurts. I was so hungry and after feeling deprived, my brain kept telling me that it was okay to eat. Anyway, I need to get recommitted and get started losing weight. It has been 10 days now since my 2nd surgery (unrelated but I have 6 inch incision in my abdomen and a 2.5 inch one in my back, and the recovery hasn't been easy). 2 surgeries within a month was a bit much for me and I haven't had the energy to fight through the dieting. So, I need to get completely back on track. What kinds of menus are you guys having. I need suggestions. Thanks, Cindy

    1 Year Post VSG!

I had my sleve surgery December 10, 2013. When I had my surgery I weighed 445 lbs. as of today 3/11/15 I weigh 282. I am shooting for goal weight of 200 lbs. So have about 82 more to go. Have stalled and not really losing anymore. Any suggestions?
