Dissapointment ... First Personal Training Session

You are right about the wacky trainer--run as fast as you can in the opposite direction! I have been working with a personal trainer now for more than 6 years. Initially I went to a gym and now I have a trainer in my home. Even when I had the trainer 3 hours a week, it never came close to 1000 dollars per month, not even half that! I delayed getting a new car and used the money from a car payment to cover the cost. So I was driving a 15 year old car (LOL) that was in good shape, and just 3 weeks ago got a new one. I never lost weight from the trainers though, although I became a lot more fit! I hope you can find someone you like. My trainer has learned a lot from me and has a different attitude now towards obesity than when she first got me. It has been good for both of us! I wish you the best on your journey!
  2. *Pulling my hair out*. Yesterday I went to my first personal trainer evaluation. Of course, I was quickly judged on my choice to have surgery. The trainer quickly told me that without training I would gain all my weight back within four months and have to start over. He also told me that no piece of equipment in the gym would help me if I picked to do this on my own. He would help my husband and I for $1000 PER MONTH !!!!! What a whackdoodle!!!! I am down 75lbs with less than 30 until goal. I feel discouraged and angry! I need to tone my arms and stomach but was looking for some help (apparently with the wrong person!). What did you guys do to tone up? Any help is appreciated :-)

is my weight loss too slow

what size band do you have and how many cc's are you filled with? what does your daily food intake look like? you might not be eating enough food. if that's what's happening, your body goes into starvation mode and weight loss is much slower. have you seen your surgeon lately? what does he say? are you keeing a food journal? if so, go see your nutritionist and she should be able to tell you what you're doing wrong.
  4. 1. Did your insurance pay for plastic surgery after your weight loss? 2. What hoops did you have to jump through, if any to get your insurance to cover your plastic surgery? 3. What type of plastic surgery did your insurance cover? Any other information would be great. I need to find out if my insurance will cover and need to know the right questions to ask and how to word my questions. TIA.

    Gym People

At this early in the post op game the calories are ok. I would suggest that you switch up the order of your workout. For the best fat burn you should lift weights first followed by the cardio. No food for 2 hrs before workout if you can. The idea is to not have available sugar so that you are forced to burn fat during cardio not blood sugar If you are a body builder this is backwards but for max fat burn you need to burn off stored sugar before you will start to burn fat.

So I have recently started working out with a bit more intensity. Before I was just doing cardio. So I have incorporated weight lifting into my routine as well now. So my main questions are since I am doing a lot more exercise do I need to increase my calories? Is that to much exercise at this point? Any other pointers would be great. My routine is 35 minutes on the elliptical, followed by about 20-30 minutes of weight training, followed by another 15 minutes on the elliptical I am eating between 600-800 calories a day. But usually closer to 600. My carbs stay under 20.
  8. I've seen many success stories with the gastric sleeve. Many post-op sleevers have lost at least 150 pounds. My weight is 383 and I'm 6 feet tall. My surgeon says my BMI is 54 and that I need the VSG with the duodenal switch but I'm reconsidering because there's a lot of people with my BMI that are really dropping it and are happy with the results. Are there any post-op sleevers here that are at least 5+ years out. If so, I'd like to hear your story. Thank you.

    Im so upset!!!

For many reasons, too many and long to explain, I've learned that unexpected delays in something so important often have a reason beyond our understanding at the time. Trust that your surgery will happen at the right time for you. Sometimes, the delay is what we need to prepare for the change in life that will come. Consider this time a blessing and make it worth your while. Take this time to get in better physical shape, start an exercise program, start learning about different weight loss programs and find one to fit your lifestyle. Research about this new tool you are getting. I promise there is still much you do not know. Use this website as a great tool to do that research. Find in your area others who have, or are getting, the lap-band. If you keep busy with these kinds of tasks, you will find the two-month delay will go by very quickly.

    Lap Band Here I Come

Hi sunrise,I to am waiting for my lapband, mid-December is a possible date, I have a few appts left and my paperwork will be summited to insurance. I have already been trying to change my eating habits, chewing until there is nothing left and have lost 7/8 pds. I am also going back to low carb. working in a little excercise(need more). I have informed my co-workers, and have told them not to expect drastic weight loss like a co-worker who had by-pass. This is a great site, also try obesityhelp.com. they have alot of great suggestions to prepare yourself for the great changes and challenges we will face.Welcome and good luck on your journey SCnot yet banded

    Losing Weight To Quick?

no it all depends on ur starting weight if your on the heavier side its easier to lose a lot of weight fast also during the beginning its really common to lose a lot of weight fast because your body is shocked by the changes in diet. as long as your taking your vitamins and getting your protein and water in i say enjoy the pounds melting off so easy because later come the plateaus now those are frustrating

    Losing Weight To Quick?

I wouldn't worry about it. I've lost 116 pounds in 6 months and I'm doing just fine despite how quickly I've lost the weight so far.

    Gym routine help please

While weight training will help strengthen and rebuild muscle (we lose muscle mass with weight loss), there is not much that can be done with loose skin. Muscle can fill it out somewhat, but once that skin is stretched, it generally doesn't come back. Many people who undergo WLS will consider plastic surgery to deal with loose skin. With that said, as many posters have stated, a personal trainer can help with establishing a routine for you based on your goals.

    Stall 7 weeks out

I am going thru the same thing. I am 2 months out and i havent lost weight in like 3 weeks, im eating ok, drinking water, excercising as well. Everyone tells me i lost but i dont know....
  16. So when I saw the new dietitian a couple weeks ago she gave me some great ideas about what different Proteins I could try. The first was a Protein from GNC called AMP. i found a small-ish resealable bag and chose Strawberry!!! i hate that most of my proteins aren't available in strawberry so i'm excited about this option. The second option is a drink from Atkins called LIFT. 21g protein per bottle! Not really a shake, more of a vitamin-Water type drink. I FOUND THEM AT MY WAL-MART ON CLEARANCE!!! for $7 a pack. normally they are 9.99-11.99 from what i can find online. so i just got one, but let me know if you are a fan, because i'll pick up more. Isopure is the devil to me. Somebody on these boards once told me that 'isopure tastes like cat ass' and seriously, they are right. i can't stand that stuff. Next- online things. I am a huge fan of youtube and love to watch inspirational videos there, plus old episodes of Fat Doctor. One thing that i fell upon when looking at lifting/bodybuilding videos was a great couple called Fit Couple Cooks. They do meal prep. Absolutely GENIUS!! love their prep videos. they weigh EVERYTHING. and all the recipes are basic-stuff you would have. shrimp with cauliflower rice and veg. butter chicken. chicken fajitas, beef and veg. lasagna. ALL great stuff. they portion and give you tips for storage/freezing. they each have had a significant weight loss journey and he is a registered dietitian so they are pretty knowledgeable. the best part, most of the meals cost about $3-5 per serving so they are very cost friendly. That's it from me. getting late. have a great start of week!

    Is This Normal??

Yes it is. You have been on a preop diet and probably lost some weight and it can take time for your body to catch up. Plus after surgery you tend to retain more fluid etc. And it takes a lot of weight loss before you start noticing a difference in clothes. Don't panic. Just keep doing what you should be doing and the weight will come off. You didn't gain it overnight and the same is true for losing it.

    Advice needed pleeeeease!!!!

I was almost denied because of depression. I failed my first psych evaluation. I had started taking Effexor, an anti-depressant, about 4 weeks prior to that evaluation. Typically, it takes 6 weeks before the Effexor is stabalized in the bloodstream enough to see the full effects. So the psychologist told me I could re-take the test after two more weeks. My test showed that I was still depressed but it was under control now. Severe depression, in remission was his notation on my approval. I think that many of us have weight related complications, both physically and mentally, which need to be under control in order for the surgery and following journey to be a success. Giving up food and the extreme lifestyle change that happens with weightloss can be overwhelming. And if we are already teetering on the edge, well... they don't want to push us over. Talk to your doctor about getting some medical help with the depression and find out if you can be evaluated after you've had time for it to really begin working in your body. Best of luck to you in your journey. Sincerely,
  19. Wow; gorgeous! Did all of your weight go from your stomach to your chest? hee

    Finally!

I was beginning to stress because I came out of the hospital and lost 20 lbs by my 2 week visit and then seemed to be stuck for 2 weeks. I would get on the scale and it would say 220.2 or 219.8 or something like that for two whole weeks. I wasn't too stressed because my 1X stretch pants seem to be about to fall off and I put on a pair of Medium stretch pants and they fit just right (although they are probably already stretched out from last I was able to wear them and gained weight - but of course the 1X is probably stretched out to 2X. And I've been able to move the seat of my car forward almost all the way and since I'm short it's made it a whole lot easier to reach the clutch. Well, imagine my surprise when I got up and got on the scale and it said 215.4. That's 25 lbs from the beginning of the 2 week preop diet to one month post-op on Wednesday. I guess it does pay to be patient and to keep going on the plan.

my band was put in on 5/20/08

well i dont live in the area but I know I saw your post and wanted to respond I got banded on Aug 21st of 08 and have only lost 14 lbs so far but with my pre op I am around a 30 lb weight loss so far. I have experienced the hunger pains and I am still in the no real food stage or at least no solids so I defenitely feel your pain, some things I do to keep my mind off the hunger and to quiet it down a bit is drink water or chocolate soy milk mainly just put liquids in and that tends to help out I also just try to keep myself busy hoping I dont realize how hungry I am. Good luck I know its not exactly what ya were looking for for an answer but I just wanted to drop ya a line let ya know dont get discouraged and 40lbs is alot so keep up the good work and focus on how much weight you have lost so far without the lap band ya probably wouldnt have lost so much. So keep working out at the gym and loesing that weight you seem to be doing a geat job so far

    SEVERE reflux at night

After not seeing the clinic for about 9months , I wanted to get in before the holidays for a little tweak. I had been plateaued, but comfortable. But knew I was able to eat too much. The same thing happened to me, after a 1cc fill by the PA. Identical!!! I have been in at least three times now for unfills and I am still having issues with heartburn and reflux. It's very frustrating!! It is very scary to wake up and have vomit in your mouth/throat!! This has stopped, but the heartburn continues. Someone wrote to eat slower, which I do need to still work on, so I am going to consciously give this a try. I hate to go back for another unfill, so I am trying to really look at my habits:no eating after supper seems to help MOST of the time, but not always, what I am eating,CHEWING!!!! I am really bad at this too. I have started exercising again. I had gotten lazy. This really does make a difference!! On the upside, I have lost weight!!
  23. There is a band to sleeve revision forum here that you might want to check out. I think there are some people that have been successful in achieving weight loss with the band. They work hard at it and use it as a tool. One of the many problems is, I think, that the weight eventually comes back (as it did with me), and the band really isn't meant to be a permanent implement in your body. After a while, it has to be removed or replaced, and so many things can go wrong from hiatal hernias to erosion, scar tissue, and ulcers. My band and port was being strangled by scar tissue and was causing me pain. I wanted it to come out desparately anyway when I realized I had band-induced bulimia. I don't think you will find a lot of people here at this forum cheering on the use on the band, but if you want another perceptive, there is another forum that you could ask on: http://www.lapbandtalk.com/ I think the sensation of hunger varies from individual to individual. It is true that the hormone grehlin is removed when 85% of your stomach is removed; however, that is only one of about a hundred or more hormones that regulate hunger. I feel hunger when I haven't eaten in a while. I'm only two and a half weeks out from surgery, but I would say that the sensation of hunger is greatly reduced, and I think that will be a mostly permanent condition. I think the sleeve is a much more permanent solution for weight loss compared to the band, and it also has a much longer history of success than the band has. I still enjoy food, and I am satiated after my incredibly small meal:-) I had a small slice of pizza last night with chicken sauage on top, and it was delicious, followed by a sugar free pudding.

    Changes In Other Behaviors?

I am another person that started wearing brighter clothing once the weight started coming off. I always did like dark clothing, but with such extreme weight gain over the years, I pretty much HID behind it all as a way to hopefully not be noticed as much. It is funny though in that through the years, I didn't really consider that aspect of it until the weight loss started. I HATED pink in my old life, I had a cousin joke that she would be having me wearing pink in no time and I told her NO NO WAY. Guess who now wears pink in addition to every other color out there now? lol... Times sure do change. I care about my makeup now as well, didn't really care to even bother with it much in the past. Now I make sure I at least throw on some base makeup and powder if I am going out of the house, more makeup if I am headed out to eat or to visit someone or to Doctors, etc. And I always make sure to keep up with keeping my hair dyed now too, I hate when my greys start coming in and never really worried about it much before. I also have been picking up some newer, prettier jewelry, plus I inherited a whole armoire completely full of pretty pieces from an Aunt that sadly passed last year and I have been wearing her things as well. Not that I am particularly vain now, at least I hope I haven't become overly vain. But I do care about looking like a vibrant woman again, and that feels wonderful. Add to this the fact that I feel more assertive than I have in YEARS, I gained a backbone.

    considering gastric sleeve

Sleeve Gastrectomy is an awesome “tool” that has helped me lose weight and not starve!!! I’m an overwater as well but having the Sleeve prevents me from doing that because 1. The hormone Ghrelin that makes you hungry doesn’t exist or is greatly subdued due to a smaller stomach pouch. 2. If you try to eat more than 2-3 ounces of food at a meal you will be extremely uncomfortable! Like pain! 3. You can only hold small meals but you eat 3-4 so you graze and don’t get hungry at all. Remember though, this is a life style change! If you don’t have the desire to make changes necessary to be healthy and at a healthy weight, you won’t be successful and can get heavy again.
