    Taking Care Of Myself

LouiseC i think its great that you are taking better care of yourself , treating yourself better, feeling good - just for you nice that Facebook friends are giving you encouragement with their heartfelt compliments, always nice to hear. i don't know how common it is for WLS patients to start taking better care of themselves. when anybody does their "grooming" better, it shows that you care for yourself more, and feel better about yourself too - so with WLS i could understand this happening in this case you've had WLS, lost a lot of weight, (or anyone at anytime of their journey) you are looking great, you just want that good feeling from inside to show on the outside too you don't need WLS for this change to occur - this happens to "normal" people too btw your new picture does look great keep up the great work kathy
  3. I've had 4 fills and am definitely feeling restriction, but am just not losing weight. After this last fill, I thought for sure that I would see the scale heading downward, but it's not. I find that I eat a couple bites and feel the pressure of the restriction. If I feel "stuck", I get up and walk around a little bit, and I usually feel better in a couple of mins. Then I sit back down, eat slower, chew more, and can finish my meal. I know I am eating much less than I ever did before, but am not seeing the results on the scale. I am still seeing my nutritionist and she says that I'm only supposed to be able to eat a cup of food. I'm pretty sure that I'm eating more than that, but I don't feel full from the band, it just slows me down. Should I feel full? I'm wondering if I should get another fill. I am afraid to, because I don't want to get sick. I do not drink with my meals. I forgot a couple times and took a sip with my meal and ended up heading for the bathroom. Do you think I am "eating around the band" as they say?
  4. I feel the same, I do have to take a couple of sips of a drink during a meal, or things get stuck. My doctor always bugs me about exercise but I am not able to at this time so losing weight is even harder.

When did you stop losing weight?

A few things.... you are lucky that you haven't had to work really hard so far...haha. I had to push push push, eat low carb etc to get to a normal BMI. People around you will always think you are "too skinny" but eventually they forget what you used to look like and they won't see it that way anymore. Excess skin looks like fat. You can get thin as a rail and still have excess skin. I was at a healthy weight even a bit heavier than goal, I consider the remaining "vanity pounds" and each person has to decide what is worth it to them - lower weight might be harder to maintain.

    Not loosing weight :(

Also, I'd tell you just walk but that's a given and the weight lost and all you'll probably enjoy that so much more, please, I don't know how bad that injury is, I want to help a bit if it can: ... http://beta.active.com/fitness/articles/the-best-and-worst-exercises-for-bad-knees ,, I got that searching it on the net, I've trouble to and it makes pure sense that when the joint is surrounded by muscle it works best and pain is a controllable issue better you use give and take you know best for how much you can do..

    Not loosing weight :(

Have you tried cortisone shot for the knee? I had to have that last week as I couldn't get the swelling under control and it worked like magic! In my regular vitamin rotation I take Turmeric supplements by New Chapter to control inflammation (I have Rheumatoid arthritis) and for the most part this a enough to keep joints under control. Also If your knee started acting up did you up what you take for pain or did you start taking something for pain because pain meds can stall weight loss. Make sure you're getting more than 60g protein, and up your water- that helped me. Good luck and try to keep your chin up, your weight will move

    5 day pouch test

I've done some research and from what I have read a lot of WLS patients use this 5 day pouch test to get back on track if they get hooked back on bad eating habits. From what I read, it's 2 days of liquids, high Protein shakes/drinks, broth and etc. Then 2 days of soft Proteins, then day 5 solid protein. I haven't had to do this pouch test, but I could see the benefits doing it down the road if I get way off track and stop losing, or start gaining weight from eating the wrong foods.

    Pregnancy?

Im 10 months post op and 7 months pregnant. Besides the slow down of the weight loss process you can expect the pregnancy symptons which can be confused with the symptons of the surgery.

    GERD Help - Water

While on my weight loss journey, I've been learning to drink water. I discovered that I really liked higher alkaline water, so I kept drinking it and started wondering if there was a reason I preferred it. Then, I read this article http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22844861. Now, that I think about it, my GERD isn't nearly as bad when I'm drinking pH8+ water. Has anyone experienced this? Also, maybe it might help someone having lapband GERD issues. That's the reason I'm having revision surgery.
  16. ok so i have like 13 days remaining for my surgery and 6lbs to go, and today i ate a big fat hamburger, i feel so bad, but i just felt like it is my last big meal! but i am scared not to loose the weight. I went to my pre-op class on monday and it seems like everybody has a hard time with the last 5 lbs.
  17. My decision was based on largely irrational fear of the bypass. I suffered mightly with the band and I dreaded something permanent that would make me vomit alot and often without predictability. Tighter in the morning, certain foods especially Proteins, fiberous veggies and rice often triggered vomiting. I had watched a reality show about a very big (800#?) man who was bitter about the bypass and vomited ALOT. What I recognize now is that he was not over his food addiction and ate too fast/too much. So I choose the sleeve 4 years ago and am quite pleased! I am half my former size and maintaining a normal weight/size. I would do it again in a heartbeat (so far no complications!), and a lucky member of the majority that don't have reflux. However, I would advise a smart person to be open and research both. Like, read research abstracts. Ask opinions of people who are years post op. Ask your surgeon for his reasons behind whatever he recommended. Go to support groups, heavily biased toward newer post op, but another perspective. BTW, they have their biases too. First surgeon I went to recommended bypass for me since I failed with the band and was high BMI. I didn't question him but was not comfortable with the bypass. I went to one of the support groups, and all the patients were bypass. I realized that this surgeon strongly advocated bypass, so I wound up switching surgeons/clinics. There were other reasons (hated his NUT) and it truly worked out for the best.

    Introducing myself

The surgery may be science, but the art of eating, post-surgery, isn't one size fits all as I have learned. I had the bypass and a hiatal hernia repair on June 6 and have been expanding my permissible diet within the general guidelines. I find that the hardest thing is the the line between full and over-doing it, particularly with new post surgery foods. I had one instance of "foamies" that caused me great discomfort- I wish I could have puked and gotten it over with; instead, I suffered gastric distress for hours, and eventually fell asleep sitting on the living room couch. You should talk to your nutritionist - sometimes, it seems, it is the food itself; sometimes, perhaps eating too much, too quickly. I'm finding the line between full and overfull to the point of distress to be a pretty fine one and easy to cross. The "frothing/foamies" gave me religion in the sense that I'm more careful about what I put into my gullet, how much and how quickly. This is a significant operation that changes a lot of your physiology- the volume and nature of the food you can accept and the degree to which you can explore new food options (within the guardrails) that don't make you sick. My take, also as a new post op patient, is that you have to take it slowly, be deliberate and work with the surgeons' staff and nutrionist to help you on your way. Nobody said it would be easy, but the rewards start to come pretty quickly. For me, just a little more than a couple months out, I have far more mobility, I'm not focused on the scale but more on my physical capabilities. I go see the surgeon for a follow up next week. My blood work looks pretty good, it has improved already. One other thing: I can still enjoy the sensation of eating good food, but that's subordinate to my main mission to remedy the problems that necessitated the surgery--not just weight loss, but Barrett's. The bypass pretty much eliminated GERD, which was huge. The weight loss is coming a long nicely and I'm deferring to the surgeon's team for advice.
  19. I had my Gastric Bypass in 2012 with Dr. Joseph Naim, MD, FACS at the Center for Surgical Treatment of Obesity in Long Beach, CA. He was trained by Dr Fobi who was at one time called Hollywood’s weight loss surgeon and considered the weight loss doctor to the stars, (Dr Fobi performed the Fobi Pouch Gastric Bypass got Jennifer Holiday, Etta James, and Roseanne Barr to name a few.) A little about me: I had my Fobi Pouch procedure, which is a variation of the Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass, because I was well over 300 pounds and was facing needing a third lower back surgery. It was not advisable for me to get the third back surgery because 1) I was morbidly obese so there were health concerns especially with anesthesia and 2) The recovery from the procedure typically contributed to a substantial increase in my weight because I couldn’t really exercise enough for it to be beneficial without potentially/inevitably compromising the new back fusion. Dr. Naim is very direct and business like. He is a very proficient surgeon and the surgical procedure he performed on me went off without a hitch. I had problems adjusting initially and in that area Dr. Naim isn’t a very patient, hand holding type of doctor. But if you want a well performed Fobi Pouch procedure and have access to a support group, (especially if you know you need lots of advise and encouragement,) Then Dr Naim is your man.

    Hi! I'm new here.

Hello! Congrats on your decision to take control of your weight and your life! There is so much knowledge and experience on these boards, take advantage of it!!
  21. Hey there ladies, I'm 1 year 5 mths out from surgery. I am 25 weeks pregnant as of tomorrow and have only gained 10 lbs so far. My doctor put a weight limit of 15 lbs. for the entire pregnancy because I'm still overweight. I have not had any of my fills removed, my surgeon says only if you have difficulty keeping food or water down will you need to have any removed. So far so good as far as that goes. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I can keep my fills throughout my pregnancy. Good luck with your pregnancy. Hope all is well.

    7 wks pregnant - over 40 Yikes

Congrats! I am 5 weeks pregnant with my second. I am really excited. I was scheduled for a removal and replacement last Thursday but found out I am pregnant -- I am so happy but concerned about the band. I have a dilated esphogas and a hiatal hernia -- it is going to be a long pregnancy! I had my first son a year out -- I had a slight unfill and no issues. (Hard to relose the weight you gain so be careful!) Rachel
  23. OMG Catherine! You look great! Your weight loss has totally inspried me. I am 2 days post op and feel relatively good. Thank you so much for your words of encouragement! I know I can do this! -D.
  24. Here I am! Yep....I am part of the SPIVAK FAN CLUB! Last fill was this last spring, and glad to say I am nowhere filled near the limit of my band AND am below goal weight now.
  25. yes your nerves tend to get the best of you at times. This was the best decision i have ever made. I started my family eating healthier prior to my surgery so it would not be sucha shock to them as well. I have really enjoyed finding new recipes for my family and also enjoying activities with them again. Best decision i have ever made and look forward to losing more weight. Good Luck and God Bless!
