6 months out and now having gallbladder removed!
Berry78 replied to jayepea's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Jay..you sound like you are being too hard on yourself. Fruit, yogurt, nuts.. sounds like wholesome food maybe the gallbladder has been holding you back. I'm actually curious whether high, moderate, or low fat is beneficial for the gallbladder. So many people that lose weight have problems, but I wonder whether it's the low fat diets that people frequently use that create problems, or whether dietary fat intake has no bearing and that it is some other mechanism at work... -
Well I'm through all the pre-cert stuff. Had my Pysch eval - guess I'm not crazy and Nutritional eval. Took about a week for my insurance to approve. Over all from first call to office took about a month to get the that point. Then had my consult with the doc and surgery date is July 12th. Have a pre surgery thing on June 12th that includes upper GI - Labs and Pre surgery class. I have to do a two week liquid diet (which include cottage cheese and yogurt - seems weird) before surgery with the day before being all clear liquids plus that lovely magnesium stuff the night before too. yuck. So glad things are flowing along. Still nervous and working on new life habits. The whole drinking things I'm find the hardest. Just never had to THINK about not drinking. ugh... Any Hoo - Just posting the progress. Oh - does anyone know how to change stuff in our profiles? Can't figure it out for nothing. Thanks again GrInS

I like the taste, but as we know it is very individual. Week 3 I can have fruit and I plan on taking one of theses shakes, some frozen strawberries, and vanilla yogurt and throwing it in my Ninja for a delicious protein shake/ smoothie 😊 -
6+ Months Postop - How Many Ounces Firm Protein Each Meal?
Diana_in_Philly replied to erniesmom863's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Trust your tummy, but, especially if you are exercising heavily, try to get some more protein in - even if its throwing in a shake. Last night I was at my fencing club for 2 hours and burned about 1,000 calories. I had consumed about 600 calories before going during the course of the day and ate a protein bar as I drove home to boost things. Today I will concentrate more on protein as well. Had a nice shake for breakfast and will have some yogurt pretty soon! -
6 months out and now having gallbladder removed!
jayepea replied to jayepea's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My diet has been **** to be honest. I'm not a big meat eater and I have to force myself to eat meat for protein. I've recently gotten over my aversion to protein shakes, so I've incorporated those back into my diet, as well as protein bars. But I do eat a lot almonds, fruit, eggs, Greek yogurt. Eating protein first has been very, very difficult for me. I've lost about 37 pounds since December and while I'm happy about it, my surgeon and I agree that i should have lost more by now. However I went in with a lower BMI and I'm at 174 right now. He doesn't think I should go lower than 160-155. I was approved for surgery because of very high triglycerides for years, documented diets that did not work for years, and a family history that has been dying by 50 of a heart attack. So happy with my decision to get the surgery, but I'm to blame for not sticking with the right nutrition. -

I'm pretty sure it went down. I'm having issues with the stuck in the throat feeling. Before I was hungry in the mornings, but today I am not. I am wondering if maybe it just didn't digest very well, or at all. Sitting in my little stomach. So I'm drinking just water right now. I am sticking to just water and protein shakes, drinkable yogurt today. -

Well good morning ya'll. I feel gross. I thought maybe 8 hours of sleep would make me feel way better after the bean episode last night. Nope. I'm feeling like I've got them stuck in my throat still. I'm going to hold off on them for a bit, along with anything else in its consistency. I've got my drinkable yogurts now. I'll add creamy soups too; no chunks. Even though my plan allows for so much now, I think it much wiser to listen to my body. It's not ready. -

Ok. So the overnight oatmeal was a fail-taste/texture wise. Threw it out. Then I dipped a spoon in some unsweetened applesauce about three times. Just didn't care for it. Went to the grocery store and didn't want to buy anything to eat. So I bought drinkable yogurt. It's pretty good. I'm almost afraid, ALMOST but not really, that I won't ever chew again. I kind of like drinking everything. Haha! -
I was so off track both mentally and physically. The day after surgery I weighed in at 267. Dropped to 232 then back up to 235.4. I was questioning if my stomach was stretched out and if that's why I felt like I ate more than I should or was now feeling hungry all the time. Was it my stomach or my old habits? I do not want to fail this journey!! I'm tired of being obese and buying plus size clothes. I started being more active whether going to gym or walking at home. I try to do something at least 5 or more days a week. When I sit down to eat I try and listen to my stomach not my brain. I still eat rice and pasta but very rarely. I hate protein shakes and yogurt but found a Greek yogurt that's tolerable so I mix my protein powder in it so I can get more protein. Today I'm only down to 230 but I am not letting that bring me down. I haven't been this weight in probably 20 years. My original weight was 330 lbs I wore a tight 4x. It was miserable and I am halfway to where I want to be. I don't want to be skinny just healthy a size 12 will be good enough for me. Just to be under 200 would be amazing!! We can do this !!!

Thanks guys, I feel better about the calorie count now! Maybe I will try to sub a few more of the carbs for fat--virtually none of the carbs are coming from starches, some of it is produce, but the biggest offender is dairy Some nuts where I might've had cheese or yogurt would take care of that!

I too threw out my "overnight oats" ...it definitely didn't soak up the protein and make it soft. I had two tiny spoons and decided it was enough. Next time I'll just cook the oats and then add the premier protein afterwards. I've tried to make "protein cake" out of the powder stuff before...nasty too. Glad the yogurt was good for you. -

Do you just drink it like water or can you also mix it with other things like coffee and yogurt? If it tastes good I may just use it as my water and forgo mixing extra protein into other things. I am going to go and try to find it today. -
Hey everyone!!! So I know it's not unusual to go through stalls but I feel as if this one is my LONGEST. I've been at a stall for about 3 weeks now ! I'm sticking to my plan where I eat high protein and low carbs. Eating about 3-4oz of protein for my meals 3x a day and for snack will usually be a fruit or yogurt. Is it too much food? I try and get at least 30 minutes of cardio everyday as well. A little background of myself...day of surgery 345...3rd month check up was 287 and current weight is 252...I wanted to at least be at 245 when I see my surgeon which is on 6/23 PLEASE HELP lol any advice would be great!

Ok so I mixed half a scoop of powdered protein with my 4oz of yogurt. OMG it was gross. 😝 It was supposed to be unflavored, but definitely not! So I ended up throwing it away . I will have to try the powder in something else. I did managemto get 3oz of the plain low fat vanilla yogurt down. It felt and tasted heavenly to me after a week of nothing but clear liquids. I am finding it hard to wait 30 minutes to start drinking again. I have to keep reminding myself. I lost 8 pounds this first week. I am happy with that. I was fully prepared for a smaller number so I was pleasantly surprised. My dh went back to work today so I am here alone just me and my little pooch Tink. I am a little lost as to what to do. I know what I should be doing I have a list of things to get accomplished, but I just seem to be lacking motivation today. It is raining outside so maybe that is contributing to my lazy mood. I hope everyone is having a good Monday morning 😃 -
What are you substituting for the comfort that food brings?
Pam_2-06-2017 replied to Sosewsue61's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I find beneficial substitutes. I always journal my food so I don't exceed 1000 calls a day and 25 carbs but include some fun substitutes. Caramel Premier Protein shake =. Coffee creamer Plain yogurt = Sour cream Homemade Almond crackers = dipping chips Avocado/tomato/lemon juice/sea salt = guacamole The more creative I get the more fun it becomes to replace my bad favorites with good. If my hunger is in my head then no substitute will replace the real thing. After having a healthy alternative and I still am not satisfied then I know it is in my head and I use distraction. I do stained glass and always have a project in the works or I'll go for a walk. I think it is important to face that head on, challenge it and win. Nutritional hunger should be satisfied after having a good snack. At first this is stinkin hard to do. It gets easier as new, good habits are formed. Good luck! -
I had this happen after a few days post op. It didn't happen every time but sometimes when I had my yogurt or protein shakes they had this weird rotten egg/sulfur taste. Sometimes it would even just be one or two bites would have that taste. It doesn't happen with everything thankfully. I'm onto the soft food stage so I've been blending the protein with ice and haven't had yogurt as often and haven't noticed the taste again. Hopefully yours goes back to normal soon!

I made it home. I think the plane travel tired me out more than my 2.5 mile walk yesterday. My fluid intake is a little down today so I am trying to make up a little tonight. Tomorrow I get to start on protein shakes and yogurt. I can't believe how happy I am about that. I have noticed that I can Handel larger sips now as long the liquid is not cold. I am drinking my water at room temp. I also prefer flavored water now and I never used to. Have any of you been adding unflavored powdered protein to your coffee or yogurt or broths? I bought some and I would like to try and boost some stuff to get my protein up. I am not sure if I just take. Scoop and mix it up? -
Just the beginning
nomorefattypatty replied to BabyFat23's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Six months seems like such a long time but with all the nutrition lessons you go through it takes that much time to learn everything, before I knew it my last appointment came pretty quickly and I thought six months was never going to happen. I stuck with the program and now have my surgery date of June 21st, my pre-op is on June 8th and now it seems like forever til I get my surgery done. So now I've said goodbye to alot of foods, added protein to even my yogurt, amongst other things and I am now enjoying being fat for the last month I will ever have to ever again, so I'm not stressing that my stomach shows through my shirt because I know it's not gonna be long. I took the past six months trying to say goodbye to bad food habits, and learning how to add better ones. I'm still having trouble with soda, and I still hate water but I'm getting it together and not stressing because six months is over and I only have one month left and I will read bariatric pal forever, sometimes it's a great help and sometimes people ignore you on here which is very rude. Just know that six months goes by so quickly, I was 238 pounds for about ten years and I'm down to 207, but I fluctuate all the time and decided to get some real help. Everyone in my family is against it and won't even go to the surgery with me, thank god for good girlfriend besties, I'm 55 and I am ready I don't care how much pain or the fact that I can never eat as much as I used to I just want my body back, good luck on your journeys I will keep you posted. Two week liquid diet troubles
Black911 replied to Okie75's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@Okie75. Sorry you're having a hard time on the liquid diet. It sounds like you're not getting enough protein. My surgery is scheduled for next Tuesday, May 30th. I started liquid diet on May 16th ( 6th day) and it's been amazingly easy. I'm drinking at least 5 shakes and eating Sugar Free snacks (e.g., pudding, Jell-O) or Dannon Light/ Fit Yogurt. I start drinking 6:30AM and end about 9:00PM. If I get hungry, I eat a Jell-O. As of yesterday, I'm down 7lbs. I'm drinking the Premier Protein (30g) or Atkins (15g). Good luck!! The top 5 foods that patients mistake for being high in protein
Bariatric Surgery Nutrition posted a magazine article in Food & Nutrition
1. Hummus. Despite being made from chickpeas, the average store bought hummus has only 1 gram of protein per tablespoon. Instead, opt for homemade hummus, homemade black bean dip or homemade Tzatziki (made with Greek yogurt) as dips for your veggies. All of these dips are significantly higher in protein when made at home compared to their store-bought counterparts. 2. Chicken broth. Surprisingly, the average store bought chicken broth has only 1-3 grams of protein per cup. For this reason, your bariatric team likely recommended you choose higher protein soups immediately after surgery (ex. milk based soups or pureed legume soups). Instead, opt for more filling thicker soups, such as a curried lentil soup, a roasted red pepper black bean soup or a hearty chili. 3. Cream cheese. Despite ‘cheese’ being in its name, the average store bought cream cheese has only 1 gram of protein per tablespoon. Instead, opt for ricotta cheese (with a sprinkle of sunflower seeds and a drizzle of honey!) or peanut butter on your morning toast. 4. Quinoa. Quinoa is a filling grain product not because of its protein content, but more because of its fibre content. While quinoa is the only grain listed as a ‘complete’ protein, it only has 2 grams of protein per ¼ cup of cooked quinoa. Always top your quinoa with a true protein source such as meat, fish, legumes, tofu or tempeh to make your meal truly balanced. Quinoa should not be the main event! 5. Almond/Cashew/Rice/Coconut milk. Despite these beverages having ‘milk’ in their name, these alternative milks contain on average a measly 1 gram of protein per cup. Instead, opt for cow milk or soy milk when you are looking to add an extra splash of protein to your cereals, oatmeal or smoothies. Moral of the story? Don’t let misleading product names or sneaky advertising fool you! Get the facts. Always double check the nutrition facts tables on the back of your foods to learn the full story. - Monica & Lisa -
