    Getting down

Well you are darn right that is discouraging. But I imagine you had already lost a lot of weight with the band, no? Wondering what size boughie your doctor used and how much food you can get down. But I'm also thinking you are taking the steps to pump it up. You may need to go see a nutritionist and truly go on a diet/exercise plan to lose that last 20 lbs. I am half way through my weight loss and the lbs are much harder won now. I think for many of us we'll have to fight our bodies to get to the finish line. You are actually almost there! If you get there in a year the sleeve still would have done a good job. Hang in there!

    April 6 Surgery - STALLED!!!

I think our bodies have "set points" or different weights our body wants to be. I think I had/have five "set points". I stayed on my first one for two weeks, my second set point (stall) lasted a week and I just broke thru and lost 3 pounds in two days. Set points are hard to break thru but with our wls tool, it is much easier than before. Good Luck! https://www.prevention.com/weight-loss/a20455278/how-to-shift-your-set-point-weight/
  3. Hi guys!! Just reporting some stats for you all! HW: 240 SW: 235 CW: 216 5'4 I am 13 days post op, the weight is flying off and I'm going back to work today. Still some soreness on the left side, I also had hiatal hernia repair so my surgeon said this soreness, which feels like a runners cramp in my side could take up to a month to FULLY go away. Sometimes it's gone but then I lift something, stretch the wrong way etc and it comes back. Lol. Other than that doing pretty good. I am on purée foods and tolerating them fine. Had cottage cheese this morning. Yummy! I will post pics shortly. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Recovery time for intense workouts & Sex

Maintenance is usually .75 or 1 gram per lean body weight in lbs is how I have always figured it when lifting daily.

Recovery time for intense workouts & Sex

walking is the normal first step for the initial 2-3 weeks or so, most docs don't want you doing any lifting or abs work for six weeks - mine says 12 weeks which arguably is still too soon. One of the things that learned from orthopedics and the PT that goes with it is that our connective tissues (which would include the fascia that holds our abdomin together under the muscles) don't have nearly the blood supply as our muscles, so they heal a lot slower. We can readily find our muscle strength returning and feeling good before those connective tissues are ready to take the load, so slow and easy is the watchword. Incisional hernias are not uncommon in our post op population (though they can provide partial payment for plastics!) I started doing some light resistance machine workouts after three weeks, keeping the weights light (about half of what I had been doing) and isolating the core. The main intent was to start regaining some range of motion and just reestablishing habits. As BigViffer indicated, you are going to lose some muscle mass both from caloric deficit and the simple matter that you won't be carrying that excess weight around 24/7. But good quality protein and continued strength training can minimize that loss. Heart rate is a funny thing. After 2-3 months, a good brisk walk, just short of a jog which my knees still don't like, could barely get my rate to break 100 whereas before it would easily be in the 130-140 functional range. To get my rate up to any reasonable level I could no longer do it along the shoreline paths and had to take it to the hill trails to get the elevation change. These days my resting rate still hangs around 50 so I'm still maintaining that extra cardio capacity to feed that extra weight that I no longer have; still gets questions from doctors, too! On sex, the humorous answer is that the hospital nurses agree that you should wait until you get home. My doc's answer is when you feel like it. As long as you are comfortable with positioning, an orgasm isn't going to bother anything done by the sleeve surgery (just getting there might if you are particularly adventuresome.)

@BigViffer thanks for the reply. I carry a lot of muscle mass right now and part of my plan was light stuff not really in a CrossFit class because I know with my pride I would try to keep up. More burpees, air squats, rowing, step-ups and some pull-ups and other body weight stuff. I love the barbells which I know will be impossible for a while. I just wanted to avoid that washed out no muscle lose skin look as much as possible. BTW you look awesome! Definitely some inspiration for my future. What is your caloric intake and protein grams in maintenance mode.
  7. Guys, I need some encouragement here. I had my sleeve done on April 6, and everything went as planned. However, after losing 21 pounds in fourteen days, I have been stalled for a week! I'm seriously crashing here, because it's like all my failures in weight loss are coming back! I am following the dietician's recommendations to the letter, walking 2 miles each day. . .HELP!!!

    Help

Could it be stress- related weight gain. I've been reading whatever I can find on cortesol and gherim and they are powerful harmones that affect weight (esp. belly fat). It's probably temporary due to the surgery date and being anxious. Deep breathe, light a candle and empty your mind of your worries and fears, and quiet down your inner voice with thoughts of your future and beautiful new self! Cortsol affects us whether the stress is happy (the Christmas holidays, for example) or worrisome. Niw, if I can take my own advice! My date is a week from Thurs. on the 12th. Psyched!

    Obsessed

This site is great. Lots of people in all different stages of the sleeve, some with really great advise. I was obsessed with anything to do with my journey for the longest time. Good luck on your weight loss.
  11. I don't know if you read my post last week. After my go around with Kaiser.I not sure what do. For days I have been myself to just forget the whole thing just try again on own. Now I am starting to get my fight back on.. I am not sure which way to go, fight the under 40 BMI with my HP,HC fatty liver, or gain some weight plus put weights in clothes. What do you think is the best route? NIH Requirements for Weight Loss Surgery The National Institutes of Health (NIH), a division of the US Department of Health and Human Services, is considered one of the world's foremost medical research centers. The NIH has set patient criteria for weight loss surgery which states that eligible patients should have a BMI of 40 or higher (morbidly obese) or a BMI of at least 35 with co-morbidities (obesity related health conditions) such as diabetes, sleep apnea, heart disease, high cholesterol, or hypertension (high blood pressure) and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Eligible patients must also have attempted and failed at previous weight loss efforts and need to pass a psychiatric evaluation to be recommended for weight loss surgery.

    Surgery Buddy needed 6/24/14

I had a proximal RNY at the age of 62. I am now 10 years post op and have lost and kept off 150 lbs. We grew up in a time when you were considered fat if you were 20 pounds heavy. I was always the fat kid or fatty fatty 2by4.We were discriminated against illegally for jobs we were qualified for. Our weight histories littered with lost opportunities and careers because I did not present the slender appearance that was required by personnel managers. Those tears were long and bitter Althoh I am 10yrs out on post op personally but during the 10 years, my mouth started to revolt I started to develop very serious dental problems than were caused by dry mouth in which all my saliva stopped and my mouth go completely dry and speaking clearly was difficult. The condition can be caused by side to some prescription meds that I had to take. My Dentist could not keep up with the constant root canal s and uhh broken teeth. Suggested I have full dental implants done. The pulled all the upper teeth on Apyt?ril 1,2012. Once the swelling went down I was started we wearing full lower flash teeth that had to be gliding with copious amounts of Fixodent.During the long the recovery from the surgery which was marked with a large grape size access wedged betweenb my maxilary sinus bone on the top and smaller abcesses by the top on the upper false test. The top of the false would squeeze the access every time the teeth moved. The pain was so bad it was very hard to work to plan, book ,and ticket large group of peopletravelling to World Bank . Meetings anywhere in the world. After about 9months we decided it was time to pull the lower teeth. This was a repeat of the upper teeth. They put in the false upper teeth about 5 weeks ago and after 2 weeks the teeth fell out. They glued them back in and after 3 bites. The teeth fell out again. My Dentist is starting over on the top teeth. Why all of this...I am going to have to relearn how and what to eat. My sense of taste was basically changed. I can taker several bite of something I have really liked and after several . bits and . I stop eating it and toss it out. .For liquids I find there isl. No such thing as too much sweetener. I would put 15 sweetenurveillance packets in a coffee. I am not sure if I am a good mentor. I think we might have and interesting time. I AM VERY WORRIED THAT I WILL GAIN Weight Sorry for the typos. Is hard to hunt and peck on a Kindle

After crying in my beef burrito, I'am back.

do you have co-morbidities? If so, I would reeapeal. If not, kaiser has other really great weight loss programs you could look into. they have a medical weight management class (where to do meal supplements and so on) that is supposed to be really great. Just because they say you can't have surgery doesn't mean you can't lose weight.... it just may be in a different kind of program. Plus, if you try their other programs and your body does not respond, that gives them more reason to approve you for weight loss surgery as well.

    Sleep study ?

I had a split study done in october, the tech told me if the sensors indicated severe apnea-they would use cpap on me. They didn't end up having to. My results showed I have mild sleep apnea but my doctor wants to see if weight loss helps it before talking about needing a cpap.

    I need your support!!

Hi Fairydust. sorry that your weight loss isn't going to plan and great idea to turn to this forum for some help. I know you are intending to see a dietician but in the meantime, why not keep a food diary and post up a typical days eating so we can spot any obvious flaws in what you are eating now. I am early days with my band and am not fully restricted yet (only one fill so far) but I have steadily lost weight since my pre op diet in August I am down 52lbs. I follow the weight watchers plan as i have always lost weight with it, although pre band ended up putting it back on. I keep a daily food diary to help me keep on track. Sue
  16. I'm in Long Island and was banded at Syosset Hosp. by Dr. Geiss. My friend was banded by Dr. Ren 13 months ago and has lost well over 125 pounds and reached his goal weight of 180 pounds. Congratulations on getting the band and I hope your recovery is smooth.

    Health Issues and exercise

Yep. When I started this journey at 287lbs, I was pretty much bed-ridden. Terrible shape. So I started a super low cal, low fat, low carb diet. And started walking in my house for 5 minutes at a time. Some days it was all I could do to make 5 minutes for the day. But slowly, the weight came off and my endurance increased. It is not easy. But it does get better. Losing the weight, having the surgery, getting to normal weight, I exercise for 60 minutes a day about 6 days a week. I still walk. And then I do core exercises at home 2 days a week in addition to that. My pain has gone from a 7-9 down to a very manageable 3-4.

how much u loose 1st week?

Personally speaking, I know I was up 5 whole pounds after I came home from surgery. I weighed myself the next day, and I couldn't believe a 5lb GAIN. I didn't start losing some of that until yesterday, my third day post op, and even then, it was only a little over a pound. I'm still above my pre op weight at 4 days post op. Now, as a nurse, I know they pumped at least 3 liters of IV fluids in me, that I saw. Who knows how much the anesthesiologist gave me during my surgery on top of that. Pair the extra Fluid with swelling/bloating from the surgery (hello gas!) and it's not surprising. Don't get discouraged! We all knew going into this that it's a slow process and we wouldn't drop weight like the GB folks. Keep your eye on the prize my dear!

    Hyperthyroidism

i have been HYPO thyroid since I was 16 (i am 44 now)... since surgery a year ago my level has been decreasing ....its down to 0.6 as of Monday lowest it's been in YEARS! ....(it has been up to 30.2 in previous years) and I am stable on my medication which is the lowest dose in 30 years! My dr told me just yesterday that she wanted to watch it close in the next 6-8 months because if my weight goes down more I may have to stop the meds....so I dont get hyperthyroid.

    2 weeks post op

I'm 10 days post op and I'm starving... I'm hoping once I get my first few fills this will subside... Also does anyone with polycystic ovaries still have a hard time losing the weight? That was always my problem and the medication that was given to me for this is also suppose to help lose weight becuz of the insulin resistance but this medication has awful side effects and I hate taking it... Ugh I hope there's light at the end of my tunnel.....

  24. Hi Where do you want to be in 1 year from now? When I had weight loss surgery, I had no idea how long it was going to take me to lose weight; I was older than most of you and everyone l drops their weight at different speeds. Most all of us ladies know that men lose much faster than we do. For me it took me about 14 months to lose 105 pounds. I was thrilled it only took me that long. I know when I started this journey like the rest of you I wanted it to just melt off of me. As first it felt like it was, but I knew that would slow down and it did. What I want you to do it take it in small steps. Set you goals by weeks or by a month, and DO NOT put yourself down if you don’t reach that goal. Remember we are all individuals. I had a walking buddy and she was good to keep me motivated and when she was down I did the same for her. She had sleeve surgery with Dr. Aceves about 6 months after I had mine. I was honored when she asked me to go with her for her surgery. Mix things up, become creative with your food ideas. I actually have become a much better cook now that I am healthy and at my goal weight, but that didn’t happen overnight. I started searching out recipes that I could incorporate in my lifestyle and something that taste great and that my husband and I both would eat. Find the Protein that you like and find 50 different ways to cook with it and watch your carbs. chicken happens to be a protein that I use the most. Those sneaky carbs have a way of messing up your weight loss. If you are eating carbs make them WHOLE GRAIN carbs, not whole wheat—the key word is Whole Grain. Summer is coming along find some great salads and put your protein in along with a little fresh fruit—like strawberries and then make the salad your entire meal. Watch the dressing that you are using. I learned to NOT put the dressing on my salad, but dip my forks into the dressing and with every bite I always get dressing. So look at the calendar and put a goal in your mind where you would like to be one year from today. Some will be there and some will not. Don’t overwhelm yourself with too big of a goal. I also used to like to look at catalog or magazines that had beautiful clothes that I wanted to be able to buy when I reached my goal. Looking at these beautiful clothes kept me from eating too. Do what works best for you. I will admit I have bought a lot of new clothes once I reached my goal. If you haven’t picked your doctor yet I would like to tell you the Dr. Aceves is the very best that you can have for your surgery. If you have any questions about him, I am more than happy to answer anything you would like to know. I wanted the best I could have and after a lot of research and talking to people on these boards, I knew he was the one.:attention: I wish you great success, remember do this one day at a time. If you had a bad day the good news is that day ends and you can start all over the next day. Hugs,:cheer2: Suzanne Sleeved 10/210/2008
