    Low Carb or not....

High protein/moderate fat is fine. Low fat is NOT key to weight loss when you are doing low carb. Why can't you eat meat? Health reasons? Personal choice? You can do low carb without meat. Google vegetarian low carb diet. Lots of ideas out there!
  2. Erin, I just tried to c/p my yesterdays logged from online, but didn't work. I've only been on pureed for two days now but my yesterday was Breakfast - protein drink (unjury), morning snack - greek yogurt, lunch - re-fried FF beans with TB of light sour cream on top, dinner - On the GO size cottage cheese. total of 60g of protein, and first day I got over 500 calories at 520. Before yesterday with starting the new stuff, I was having 2 protein shakes and the yogurt to get in the protein. Things I'm getting ready to try are vegetarian 99% fat free chili (and puree'ng it), poached eggs (not until I've done more pureed foods), soft cheese, and super soft fruits. Hope this helps!
  3. I lost 89% in the first year. And I ate carbs and vegetarian. It's a miracle!
  4. My surgeon told me that the pre-op liquid diet is to help shrink my liver. I am not sure why your surgeon requires less of you. My two weeks begins on the 26th and my surgery is on January 9th. I also see my surgeon for one more visit on the 6th. With BCBS Federal if your BMI is 40 or > you do not have to do a six month diet and while you are not required to provide 5 years worth of history either the more documentation the better is what a BCBS Federal Bariatric person told me. This is going to be the longest month of my life. I plan to keep myself so busy I have no time to think about it. My cousin and sister were so excited when I told them I was approved. I celebrated with my cousin and a good friend on Saturday at a great vegetarian restaurant in NYC and then we went to see the tree and it started to snow when we got there what perfect timing.
  5. I'm almost 3 months out and I spent yesterday from noon until 9:30 in the evening with "the foamies" and throwing up. It was actually a little scary, although I didn't have pain. I didn't eat anything new - vegetarian chili and a little bit of chicken breast. I drank from a straw in the morning, but I've used straws since surgery. I have no idea what caused this episode, but I still have them quite often. It seems like one day I'm fine eating something and the next time I have it, I get sick. I'm glad I read the previous post about making today a liquid/soft day. I never want a repeat of yesterday!

    What can possibly go wrong?

You don’t have to get all your Protein from meats. There are lots of people who are vegetarians and they get these surgeries done. It just means you have to work harder to get your protein in other ways. I can’t stand meat alone. Make a curry or stew version and cut the meat in to the sauce in shreds. Add lots of vegetables and other stuff to your meal. The first six months after surgery I used to eat lean meat and I pretty much hated life by the end.
  7. This is the quick meal I came up with. I had to use what I had available. I made some whole wheat pasta, and cooked up some onions, red bell pepper, yellow squash, and some Roma tomatoes. I put some alfredo sauace on it all and it was pretty good for a last minute thrown together dinner lol it wasn't vegan, but it was vegetarian.
  8. I really like the website veganricha.com for vegan recipes and many of them are Indian food. She has 2 cookbooks. The first is vegan Indian food. Her flavors are great and many are simple. I also like cookieandkate.com for vegetarian and vegan recipes and isachandra.com for vegan recipes.

Is there any particular reason why you're avoiding meat? Are you a vegetarian/vegan?
  10. My (current) GF is a Vegan. I've been eating (mostly) Vegan/Vegetarian the last few months and LOVE the food and lifestyle. We plan on really spending time to research quality and nutritious china free products.

    Vegetarian or Vegan VSG ?

@@ekmw, I'm currently a lacto-ovo vegetarian, but I plan on going back to vegan once I reach maintenance. If you want some info, tips or to recipe swap, just send me a PM. It doesn't seem like many of the vegetarian/vegan sub-groups are very active on here unfortunately.

    12 Year Old Gets Lapband

My 11 year old wouldn't have a clue what a proper portion size is, nor what a calorie really is, or how it breaks down in his body. It's my job as his parent to give him what he needs to fuel his body for the day. What we *have* taught him is that to grow up strong and healthy, he has to eat his veggies, Pasta and Protein (we are vegetarian) and NOT drink fizzy crap. We have taught him that he has to move his body every day (for example, walking to school, or the shop to do the shopping, or to the library rather than driving) A great way to set kids up for obesity, and eating disorders is to put too much pressure on them to be thin. And by forcing a *child* to comprehend the workings of a calorie, how to burn excess energy off, and all that sort of thing, we are setting our kids up for paranoia and failure. Children are children for a reason. At 8, 9,10, 11, or even 12 years old they are still children, and still need their parents to guide them. Children can be incredibly mature, and still be a child. Society treats children like mini adults, and it's not right. They are children. As for the school lunch thing... Well, the simple solution to school lunches is to send along a healthy lunch. Not just give the kid money and expect that they will make the healthy choice. Because children do not have the reasoning power to understand that a packet of chips, and a can of coke are a crap choice, and will leave them feeling like garbage half way through the day, but the salad sandwich and skim milk will keep them feeling fantastic, fuel their brain and help them have a better day at school. That is why the parents should ultimately responsible for what the child eats. I am not attacking, just trying to explain my point of view.
  13. What a great idea:-) I've lost 61lb. Sleeved 19th May. I have 28lb to go to my goal. This has taken me from a UK size 22 (US 26) to a UK 16 (US 12) I am so happy with my results. I aim to get to goal early 2016. No complications but fairly chronic reflux. Managed with medication but may need to look at surgical options moving forward. What I love: Freedom to move and play with my kids easily Buying new clothes! Not feeling like the fat friend My husband's respect for doing this What is hard: Getting Protein in has been a hard battle, especially being vegetarian The reflux hair loss I haven't overcome my eating demons and will need help once the sleeve loses its magic ways All in all I have absolutely no regrets! I did in the first few weeks but I'm a new woman now
  14. I have to say too that I was afraid by not telling many people that I wouldn't have a big enough support system. But I have found that the PAs at my surgeons' office and my RD (especially my RD!) have been amazing. My RD is a vegetarian like me so she really understands. I doubt she has ever struggled with her weight but I think that she truly understands my journey. She goes out of her way to email me little ideas and recipes here and there and she is so supportive.

    scared/embarrassed/unsure

I am vegetarian AND do not tolerate gluten, whey or lactose - so you can imagine how daunting this whole thing was for me!! But I have never been healthier and never had a better diet in my life - and I am 100% satisfied with what I eat. Mandatory nutrition counseling was a part of my bariatric program, as it should be for everyone. I spend at least an hour a month with my nutritionist, which is a lot more than most folks have to, but I need her, and she totally gets it! She has suggested many new foods and combinations. Hidden gluten was causing my skin condition (boils, blistering, peeling, redness cracking etc) and it is almost 100% cleared up now - I have little minor flare-ups once every 6 weeks or so, but nothing like the full-time misery I had before. Believe me, the band is 100% friendly to a gluten-free diet! I could not eat bread even if I wanted to (yes, I have tried, more than once!) but potatoes are no problem. I am on modified carbs - almost 100% from fresh fruits and vegies - and I manage to net between 40 and 60 grams a day. I also easily get at least 60 grams of Protein a day, and that's no Protein shakes cause I can't tolerate whey. I do use a lot of soy milk (soy slender to be exact) and sometimes a soy Protein powder, but rarely - extra protein is stored as fat just like extra carbs would be. Actually, having a restricted diet sort of helps explain why you are eating funny if you don't want folks to know about your band. I told only those I had to before, but when you lose 1/2 your body weight in a year, people are going to notice! I am now a walking billboard for the lap-band and for the healthy lifestyle that goes with it. No one can argue my results! You are the perfect candidate. the lose/regain cycle is common to almost all bandsters. Look at this as a weight maintenance surgery: you have to lose weight to get your band, then as you lose each 10 lbs more, they tighten it up to "lock in" your loss. It's the perfect tool! Best of luck ~ Riley
  16. im trying to give up meat i have been mostly meat free for 2 weeks its not as hard as i thought..any recipes would be great i feel lighter and more regular..i hope i dont fall off the wagon with thanksgiving coming up

    NEWBIE:Scared to Get Lapband

I am in Matawan NJ, exit 120! ;-p I am looking into going to a support group as we speak. Actually two, because I am checking out two different surgeons. Dr. Chau and Dr. Mehta. I am afraid of the surgery, I am afraid I won't wake up or have complication and dying is not worth it and it sounds strange, but the thought of having something foregn inside me, wrapped around my stomach is a little scary. What scares me is what it will be like afterwards. i don't really know. I don't want to get the band and then freak out about what I have done because I was not prepared for the changes. For example, I bolt down my food, I don't know how to eat slowly. I have read things about people eating broccoli and almost fainting from the spasms, etc.. I am a vegetarian too by the way. It frightens me that I could not chew well enough and have to go to the ER because of it.

Newbie Question - What is PB & Sliming?

Did you find any fellow vegetarians? I know of a couple on another board...
  19. Okay,, so I know this has been talked about repeatedly but I need to share with people who truly know where I am coming from.... The past two weeks my 7 siblings have been visiting from elsewhere at my dads who lives next to me.. We haven't all been together since "02" and were long overdue. We had a great time going to the fair, doing some work on my dads house, visiting and eating. I went out of my way to make food that was health friendly because we have a variety of eating issues amongst us,, vegetarian, chrons, heart disease, morbid obesity you name it one of us has had it. I am the official cook and love it, but wish I was good at anything but after seeing the family photos that were taken. I was mortified and it really has been devastating to me. I wish I could crop me out of all of them... The worst thing is there ended up being an open discussion about my pending Lap Band Surgery. I have talked with everyone about it except one sister because she worries and I don't want her to until I have a date... Most of them have been supportive, but totally uneducated and have no idea what its all about. One SIL had gone to a seminar and just can't imagine only eating a cup or less of food per meal for the rest of her life. Shes in her late 60's and is comfortable with herself. I on the other hand have two young children and a lot of years to look forward to,, if I get healthy!! I am working at losing right now and am struggling daily to stay on track. The nutrionist would like me to eat 1500 cals a day until 2 weeks before surgery, and I am sticking pretty close to that but it isn't easy. I am currently having some back issues and excercise is out of the question for at least the next few days. So,, after seeing these pictures with me looking soooo horrid I doubt anyone is going to question why I want to have lap band, and if they do I will email them to them. I don't even want to imagine what my husband is going to say, I hope he doesn't see them. With any luck I should have my surgery in November, hopefully before Thanksgiving so I don't have to cook,, we can do something else!! It seems the closer I get to surgery the more desperate I am to have it. I have certainly been in denial for a long time about myself and owning up is killing my spirit. I just keep telling myself that during this time of self realization I am gaining the strength and willpower I will need to succeed and lose all my weight.. I will not sit for another photo until the day before my surgery!!!

    Change of heart

Yup, I even tried hypnotism. What I found is that I'm a giggler and couldn't stop laughing at the guy. His "calm/sexy" voice was really corny and hilarious. Yes, it is freaky!! My story is similiar to many above...for 2 years my Dr wouldn't approve me for surgery (recommend/refer me to the program). During that time and under her supervision I did the Hcg, pills, gluten-free, vegetarian, etc. You name it I tried it. Finally after 2 years I told her that I was either going to drop her or leave with a referral. She submitted the referral during that visit. It took another year to finally have surgery but during the WLS program I kept thinking couldn't I just lose this on my own. I kept going even though I had my doubts. What you're feeling is absolutely normal. I'm glad I kept going. I knew deep down, this was my best option to get the weight off and keep it off. I haven't looked back since.

    August Band Crew!!!!!

Speaking of cravings... I have been thinking none stop about fried pickles from Razzoo's.(They are to die for) I have also been wanting bacon. The thing is I have been a vegetarian for 18 years. What is up with that?

    Vegetables after weight loss surgery

Not true. I'm a vegetarian. Easily 75% of what I eat contains fiber. I have been eating them since day 1. When I was all liquid I would make a bean Soup. I also added a bit of spinach to my Protein drinks and Soups. As for vegetables try what you like. Just allow time to see if you body reacts negatively before adding anything else new. I have been enjoying small green salads since 6 weeks out. As for grains, I don't eat white rice, but I have had brown rice and quinoa with no issues. I have never had constipation or diarrhea. I had my first BM 3 days after coming home from the hospital and I've been regular ever since.

my banana flavored protein drink, protein pudding like 3 spoonfuls. church when I came home it was vegetarian soup. I had been so busy the day before that I went down for a nap, 4 hours later.................... hubby had make chicken stir fried veggies/pastas. My throat was still hurting from the night before (I think the smoke from casino didn't help) so I pretty much just chewed the flavor out the food and then spit it out. evening dessert is applesauce.
