  1. Thats where i currently find myself post surgery trying different shakes and not having a lot of luck. I have tried gnc unflavored not bad but i keep getting a severe aftertaste. Tried premier mix it is okay but not for everyday the already mixed were too chalky and thick. The one i really liked was genepro but that one has alot of controversey behind it and i am not sure i want to bet my health on it. So ultimately it is syntrax tried alot flavors and found some that are tolerable. Plus they have lots of flavors that i can interchange through the week. I actually liked the grapefruit and road side lemonade the best but there was nothing wrong with the other flavors either. As for unflavored fixing to try the unjury medical grade hmm we shall see. first post-- protein question

I second Atkins Lift. They're delicious. I couldn't stomach Premier Protein or GENEPRO (it's not completely flavorless, you can still taste something being added). ---------- Surgery date- 11/8/16 HW- 249 SW- 235 CW-198

    Unflavored Protein

@@SKrae430 Welcome! I love @@unjury! It's my Protein of choice. I've only recently started using the unflavored more frequently and have found success with adding one serving (24 grams) to my strawberry lemonade (sugar-free drink mix with Water to taste). I mixed a serving of lemonade with about a half serving of strawberry with 20 ounces of water, 1 serving of unflavored @@UNJURY, shake well, serve over ice. It is not a Meal Replacement this afternoon, just a beverage to keep me from doing something stupid When I choose to use a shake as a meal replacement, I always use a full serving of whichever flavor I'm using. vanilla is the flavor I buy and use most often. This morning I made an iced latte at work with 8 oz. skim milk, 1 serving unflavored @@UNJURY, 2 oz. espresso, sweetened to taste and a couple of pumps of SF Torani Vanilla and Caramel syrup. Because the whey protein can clump if mixed with liquids hotter than 140 deg., I tend not to use it in hot beverages. The @@UNJURY dietitians are a huge help anytime I have a question about using their product in different things. Most recently, I inquired about adding it to some oatmeal (which I rarely eat, just had a taste for it one cold morning). They have a lot of recipes available on the @@UNJURY website and you can call the dietitians anytime during regular hours. Because I want to start using protein in my morning coffee, I'm going to try the GENEPRO unflavored for that purpose only. One of the other BP members told me how they incorporate it so as to avoid the clumping issue. I hope it works for me. I prefer drinking my coffee hot in the morning rather than an iced coffee beverage. One word of advice if you haven't already done this, I recommend actually weighing the scoopful of powder in grams on a food scale rather than depending on just scooping it out; you will get a more accurate serving size each time as the powder can pack down. Be sure to weigh the scoop empty first and zero out the scale, fill scoop and weigh again. I hope I've answered your question in all of this rambling If you've got any good recipes or suggestions, please share!

    Protein

Premier Protein is way to sweet for me. I also use GENEPRO and there has been much debate about the 30 grams. I'm sure by now if it weren't correct there would be consumer complaints to verify and adjust the claim. Do the research as I've seen the 15 gram claim before and don't think that is accurate. I like it cause I can mix it in everything even if just add 1/2 scoop to things like yogurt that already has 15 grams of protein to get to 30. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

The need to eat until stuffed

Thanks for the info, Jerome at unjury...I'm well aware of the 'concerns' about Genepro. Your product unfortunately makes me vomit, so I've found something else that works. I'm losing weight and my labs have been stellar.
  7. hi Mrs SugarBabe and ShelterDog64 I don't generally comment on competitive products but we believe that the GENEPRO marketing is potentially misleading. This is what was said on the message board used by bariatric dietitians back in the fall (things might have changed since then): one RD said: ----------------- "....I never heard of this product, but I am highly skeptical. When I first looked at their website I couldn't wrap my head around a 15g serving having 30g of Protein without defying the laws of physics. ..." and this is what one of the RDs here at UNJURY® Protein posted back then: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "...Using information available on the Musclegen Research website (shopmusclegen.com/protein?product_id=172), reviewed today, September 1, 2016, my calculations reveal that the nutrition label of this product may be misleading. One container of GenePro is 11.8 ounces, or 334 grams. There are 30 servings per container, and the label indicates that one serving provides 30 grams of protein. Therefore, 1 container should provide 900 grams of protein. You may check my calculations to ensure they are correct using the link provided. If your calculations are equivalent to mine, do you believe it’s possible for 334 grams of powder to contain 900 grams of protein?..." If you have more questions about this, you can call the UNJURY® Protein toll free number and ask for Jerome. I hope this is helpful. Jerome at UNJURY® Protein

@@MrsSugarbabe I couldn't stand the smell of flavored Protein powders within a few weeks of my surgery, so I've been using the GENEPRO since July. My labs have been great!

The need to eat until stuffed

@@ShelterDog64 -- Thank you for that helpful information! I think I'll order some GENEPRO tonight. Even at 2+ years post-op, it doesn't take much to fill me up so I want to make the most of everything I take in. Unflavored Protein powder is my newest best friend; before that it was vanilla

The need to eat until stuffed

@ShelterDog64 -- You mentioned earlier using unflavored GENEPRO in your morning coffee -- do you have to keep the temperature of the coffee at a certain temp to keep the Genepro from clumping? My morning coffee alone fills me up, but has no Protein so I'm wanting to kill two birds with one stone, so to speak, and I've seen that several folks use Genepro in their coffee. I just want to be sure before I order a tub of it. I use @@unjury Protein Powder to supplement my daily protein intake and love it, but it will clump if the Water temp is above 140 deg. (chicken Soup flavor). I make my own latte in the afternoon and have switched from hot to iced so I can use the unflavored @@UNJURY in the latte. This is working well so far, however, sometimes I want a hot latte in the afternoon. Thanks for any suggestions!

    Protein

I would be a little cautious when choosing Genepro. They claim that a serving is the "equivalent of" 30 grams of protein, because you are supposed to absorb their protein better than regular whey isolate. However, there have been no independent studies proving their claim yet. So, I would err on the side of caution and still only count it as 15 grams of protein towards my daily protein target. Better to end up getting more protein than you might need than finding out you've only been getting half as much as you thought.
  12. Unflavored. I was told GENEPRO from one of my nutritionists, but I've also heard isopure was good too. Sent from my SM-G928V using the BariatricPal App

The need to eat until stuffed

@@bleonhardt It doesn't change it at all, at least to my palate. I use cream in my coffee, so I mix the scoop of GENEPRO with the coffee cream, then mix that into my coffee. It's really helped me and made my weight loss more successful!
  15. It's almost ALL about self-control at where you and I are post-operatively! You're not meeting your protein goals, which is devastating to weight loss and feeling satiated by your food. I've not done the best job during the holidays, and I'm in a 3 week long stall right now. I know it's because I'm not keeping my carbs down and my protein up, and I'm not tracking every bite I put into my mouth. You should be losing more/more consistently than you are, maybe a re-start with Protein shakes and then advancing yourself through the different stages to reset your diet would be helpful. And you don't mention using any Protein powder...I still have to use it to get my protein grams high enough. On a normal day, I use GENEPRO unflavored in my morning coffee, so I start off with 20-30 grams of protein in a 12 ounce mug of coffee, with monkfruit sweetener and cream. Some days I have a container of plain yogurt with a little low-carb granola mid-morning, or cottage cheese with a tablespoon of pureed fruit stirred in. Lunch, I eat a cheese stick and a couple of slices of deli turkey. I have a handful of almonds or half an apple with Peanut Butter for an afternoon snack, then 3-4 ounces of my family's dinner protein and around 1/4 cup of vegetables. And I almost always have a sugar-free popsicle before dinner. That typical day gets me about 850 cals, 95 grams protein and 50 grams of carbs, with only 21 of them being sugars. I lose when I'm eating like that...80 lbs since the end of June. You've got the tool in place, you just need to commit to using it correctly, find ways to distract yourself when you're hungry (exercise, clean house, work, garden...whatever works) and get back on track. There's literally no reason for you to NOT be successful! Go get it, you CAN do this!! Does the genpro change the consistency of your coffee at all? I can not wait until I have a taste for coffee again lol but think that is a great idea to meet protein goals! Just can not do a consistency change as I won't enjoy it! Liver Shrink diet

I'm 3 weeks post op now, in the puréed stage of my diet. I will kind of be honest with regards to boredom of foods. You need to prepare yourself to be bored with food after the first few weeks of surgery. You will only be able to eat a few things, and you are lucky if those are things you enjoy eating. During this time, try finding liquids you enjoy and plan on eating those for days at a time. During the first 2 weeks there aren't many options. I found eating the broth from a Vietnamese restaurant was way better than broth from a box or can. I had planned on Jello after surgery because I enjoy it, but even the sugar free caused me to have dumping. The Protein shakes were too thick and didn't settle well on my stomach so I chose GENEPRO as a protein replacement because it's unflavored and can be mixed in anything. Try to prepare for boredom because I wasn't and it hit me hard. I'm doing as little carbs as possible (keto diet) so I cut all carbs from my diet during my liver shrink diet. I had tons of grilled chicken and veggies, spinach and chicken salads (chick filet has amazing salads), lean beef kabobs, and tuna salad. I also tried many egg dishes because that's my go to protein with avocado for breakfasts. If I craved carbs I would eat protein. I don't know why but it helped. Also jello with whip cream was amazing before surgery when I could still eat it. I've not craved carbs or Coke one time since surgery and I think it's because I already went through those struggles during pre-op. Good luck and I hope that helps some. When does appetite return?

Ive tried a lot of Protein shakes, they are hard to drink. Ive been using GENEPRO and just putting it in my Water. first post-- protein question

At 4 days post-op, really focus on getting your Fluid volume in vs Protein grams. You'll be okay for a while with less protein as long as you're getting close to your Water goal. Going forward, I second getting some unflavored Protein powder. There are many brands, I'm a GENEPRO fan but there are other brands that others have had good luck with. Find one, because once you get to pureed/soft foods, that powdered protein will be the key to your success. I put it in cottage cheese, refried Beans, yogurt, pudding...anything soft and moist. I'm over 6 months post-op and I still put a scoop in my coffee every morning. Good luck!

  21. I have been using GENEPRO in my coffee in the mornings also. I do follow the mix with a fork using room temp Water then add to hot liquid route. I also warm my coffee with the Genepro in the microwave as i like it hotter than it comes out of the Keurig. I haven't had any clumping issues. 22. I started with GENEPRO i was extatic over it then the reports of it claiming more Protein than it actually contains started coming out and that they are getting sued. I stopped because i am a newbie and did not want my protein to be low because of it. But i see where others have tried it and come out okay i dont know i am on the fence with this stuff but i really want to go back to it sonce it was the only one i could really stomach Sent from my SM-G920P using the BariatricPal App
  23. I use to follow the manufacturer direction of mixing GENEPRO with hot liquid at the bottom and mixing genpro with cold on top and/or directly into cooked foods. I did read here someone mixed it with a little Water first (thank you to whomever that was). So I have been using this method now for the past couple of months with success every time. I believer that mixing it with room temperature water first is best. Once I was cleared for coffee, about 2 months post op, I've started my day with genepro mixed in my coffee. That starts my day off with 30 grams. I now put in my genepro and blend with a fork and a little bit of tap water, just enough to mix it (I don't want to dilute it too much), then I add my coffee. At that point it doesn't matter how hot my coffee is. Before this method, if the coffee was too hot it would not blend the Genepro and I'd have little bits of it that would clump and be disgusting and at the price of Genepro, I'd hate tossing that cup. I'm not sure I'd meet my Protein goal if not for supplementing still (5+ months out) with my morning Genepro. I don't notice any change in taste of my coffee. You can probably use this method for Soups and such. Just remember they do not advise microwaving Genepro. I know many aren't sold on this supplement; but I keep reading some newbie post ops complaining they aren't getting their protein in and just wanted to share my mixing tips if you do use it.

Not a fan of the shakes

I gave up shakes early on. Surgery was November 9th. I now get all my Protein from food. I couldn't tolerate the shakes anymore. I keep trying but instantly they make me nauseous, I get chills like I'm going to throw up and diarrhea. I can tolerate GENEPRO protein if I add it to something but most days I don't need it. 25. I notice you don't say anything about drinking water. Next time you want to reach for a snack, take a drink of water instead. If you don't like plain water, add some Crystal Light. I like the Crystal Light Pure that has Truvia (stevia). It's not overly sweet and there are good flavors available. Sometimes I will mix a scoop of Genepro protein powder in a bottle of water with the Crystal Light. It's a good way to get in 30 grams of protein, 16+ oz of water and avoid eating something you really don't need. My nutritionist and doctor both stress drinking at least 64 oz of liquid every day (water, tea, milk, soup, etc.).
