Halfway through pre-op liquid diet-some thoughts.
Butch Luce posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Today is the 7th day of my pre-op liquid diet. Maybe my thoughts may help others. First, I'm proud to say I did not cheat. I was tempted a few times when I was around prepared food such as at a meeting I attended. Fortunately the meal was at the end of the meeting so I made an excuse and went home. Also, I did not go to Lions Club which has a buffet meal during the meeting. I followed my Drs. guidelines religiously. Generally I would have a Protein shake with almond milk or skim milk for Breakfast, then a half cup of Greek yogurt for a mid morning snack, then a premier Protein Shake and another half cup of yogurt at lunch, then drink an Isopure in the afternoon, 32 oz of cold Water in the late afternoon and early evening, then broth for supper. Supper was what I looked forward to all day because it was hot-my hot meal for the day. I alternated among chicken, vegetable, beef broth and then a couple of times had canned tomato Soup with powdered protein added. I usually did not add protein to the broths. I kept track of my "meals and snacks" and ranged from a low of 83 gr. Protein to a high of 164 gr. For calories I ranged from a low of 445 to a high of 978. I tried to hit 60-80gr. Protein and 700-900 calories/ day. I highly recommend keeping track of everything so you can compare meals/days. It has worked for me. As everyone says, the first 2-3 days are the toughest then I sort of got used to it and fell into a routine. Finally, I am retired so it is much easier for me to control things-I know it would be much more difficult if I were still working. Feel free to ask questions. Good luck! What does is mean to "feel" a restriction?
the best me replied to fiveholts714's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I can "test" my restriction by eating a large spoonful of yogurt, not a tablespoon...but heaping, and I'll swallow it with very little squishing in my mouth. If I "feel" it kind of stop at the band before it goes down, I know I'm restricted. If it hurts, I'm too tight. If it just goes on down and I feel nothing, I'm too loose. Restriction has to do with how much pressure it takes your stomach to push the food past the band. If your stomach has to work so hard it pushes the food back up into the esophogus, it hurts! and it's not healthy. Eating shouldn't hurt. But good restriction will keep you not too hungry, able to make it to the next meal or healthy snack without grazing, and unable to eat tons at a sitting. I get a little burp during a meal, it's time to slow down and wrap it up. My meal is done! And I feel satisfied. Wow! -
If it is working, then why change it? However, our bodies do flourish with variety, especially with veggies and fruits. These are foods that provide our body with protective nutrients we need. Also, maybe venture out with some shrimp, scallops, beans, eggs? Getting your protein from food is ideal (vs. protein shakes/bars) once you can eat anything. I assume you are past the restrictive phase. I make my own "protein shake" with baby spinach, plain nonfat greek yogurt, 1/2 cup frozen cherries, 1/4 cup guava juice and sugar free torani syrup. Simply divine - a bit more carbs yes but full of many good things for the body and the protein!

Well, I did take one dosage of a liquid anti-diarrheal product and it has help greatly. No more surprises! Thanks so much for your ideas and inputs. Guess my system was just in shock. Feeling a lot better and just 1 more day until in can begin to eat sliders. I don't think yogurt and mashed potatoes will ever taste better!
-
Weird I haven't had any problems with junk food. A first for me. I also don't have any problems with chicken if not really dry. Sliders for me are things like shakes, yogurt and cottage cheese because the don't keep me satisfied and I am hungry an hour later. I will say some crackers seem to be sliders too.

What else besides protein shakes on 6 days post op?
BLERDgirl replied to nugirl402's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Your nutritionist should have given you a list of acceptable food. Eggs were not on my list until I was on purees. My first 2 weeks were full liquids. Protein shakes, cream soups, broth, water, diluted juice, greek yogurt were all acceptable. If you are unsure, you should call your nutritionist and review acceptable foods. Yes the protein shakes will get tedious, but it's only temporary. following your medical team's advice is important in the healing of your new tummy. -
Has anyone stretched their pouch??
MissBS replied to 1HANNA's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Got my band a week ago today. Been on clear liquids for this week. Get to move to liquids (creamy soups and yogurt in addition to the clear liquids), for a week starting tomorrow, then a week of soft foods (mushies) and then week 4 is when I start eating regular foods. A week of clear liquids has been rough, but I did it. Can't wait to have some soup tomorrow. Good luck to you!!! Becky -
I personally have removed the high-carb, high sugar treats from the house and replaced them with sugar free pudding and popcicles. I would personally like to nominate Blue Bunny for an award. They make the most fabulous splenda sweetened low/no fat yogurt, and their SF Ice cream bars are the best in the universe. It's hardly like a diet when you can slurp the occassional creamy sugar free treat. Good Luck.

New here! 1 week post op
JamieLogical replied to bmontiville's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I had to experiment with various protein drinks post-op, because my tastes for them definitely changed and some were less pleasant than others for my new sleeve. The ones I ended up drinking were EAS AdventEDGE Carb Control, which I bought at Walmart and Target. Another thing you can try to do is add unflavored whey protein powder to your soups and yogurts. Just be careful when adding it to soup. If the soup is too hot, it can cause the powder to curdle. -
Everyone is different. Based on the experiences of others I have read I'd say your experience is normal. I am 3 & 1/2 weeks post op and I can eat about 2 oz of soft food per meal. I get in around 550-600 cal a day. Honestly I wish I couldn't eat so much so maybe I could move past this slump (refuse to call it a stall] I have! As for Protein, can you get unflavored protein and add it to Soups? I started doing this. I also have my daily shake, some meat and greek yogurt. I try to hit 70 grams a day as a goal. All of this is based on my guidelines. The fluids are important too so you don't get dehydrated.

Hi i am looking to buy an unflavored protein to put into things after surgery like, broth, pudding, yogurt, crystal light. ..etc. I know many people have tried many proteins and I am trying to find out what unflavored protein you prefer??!

How much can you eat 1/6/12 months post-surgery?
mismatched replied to Barry W's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm one month out and my daily eating looks like this: 2-3 light muscle milks @ 20g Protein each 1 Greek yogurt (breakfast) 1 small banana or some turkey and cheese (lunch) 2-4 ounces of family dinner, eating protein first My plan doesn't involve limiting carbs but as I start tolerating more foods, I'll cut out the banana and scale back on the yogurt. -
Sorry two premier shakes have 320 cals, stupid phone. Anyway. Based on calories its seems like if you would rather substitue a yogurt for another shake you could probably do that. However cottage cheese or yogurt are giving you certain nutrients etc. Post op I choose low fat cottage cheese with either pinapple or herbs added.

Well now that I have been given the OK to start eating different foods if I can tolerate them, I am having trouble finding different meal plans. I want to plan out my meals for work but I have been finding a hard time finding diet plans and meal ideas for post surgery. Anybody have any suggestions on meal plans or maybe apps or websites with ideas. Thanks guys FYI right now i eat a lot of tuna (im almost sick of it), I eat hummus, I drink my Protein, I will sometimes eat Soup. for some reason my body doesnt like yogurt and it doesnt like eggs anymore.
-
No meal/diet plan here. Just got my Protein in first and then added in veggies, fruit and whole grains as I could tolerate. Always just ate whatever looked and tasted good.....chicken, crab, burger, pork loin, steak, ham, sausage, bacon, elk, eggs, fish, cheese, Greek yogurt, spinach, squash, green Beans, beets, avocados, mushrooms, tofu, beans, Peanut Butter, Brussel sprouts, carrots, cauliflower, apples, pineapple, bananas, melons, tomatoes, lentils, Kashi Go Lean, Bob's 10grain hot Cereal,.... Check out the nutrition subforum on here for ideas. World according to eggface and bariatric foodie are both websites with good recipes.

These additional items are on my list and I'm less than one week post-op, so they may be ok for you: Greek Yogurt (has more Protein than regular yogurt. Get a flavored one). Grits (thinned with milk or water) oatmeal or Cream of Wheat (sugar free, thinned with milk or water) Sent from my iPhone

Healthy living after Band surgery
pink dahlia replied to statebabe40's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
All of the above advice is excellent, the only thing I would add is to keep a few healthy snacks with you at all times. This kept me from eating something I shouldnt be eating even if it was only a few bites. I was not a perfect eater, and still aren't , but having healthy snacks when out Im out is always a good option. Depending on what stage you're at, yogurt, a protein drink, cottage cheese, nuts, raw veggies, fruit slices are some favorites. Good luck !! -
Congrats on your progress! I sure hope you get to feeling you can change your member name someday With complications, your body has really been hit hard. May take a little longer to recoup. Are you eating/snacking/drinking enough? I found early on that I had a lot more energy if I added some carbs to my protein smoothies and snack list. I ate more carby proteins like beans, blended bananas or peaches or berries and skim milk with my protein drink, and added oatmeal to my Greek yogurt, etc. Also make sure you are taking your vitamins, including a separate D3 and sublingual (or injectable) B12. Does your doc do 6 month bloodwork to check iron and vitamin levels? These things could definitely make you tired if low.

Get yourself a bottle (or 10) of sugar free coffee flavorings. and a Container of 0%-2% Plain Greek Yogurt. Use the coffee flavor syrups to flavor your yogurt.

I really hate greek yogurt, I tried and tried to like it because of the Protein, but yuk!! I am so excited!!!! I bought some yesterday Dannon Okios fruit on the bottom, it is DELISH!!! I think it is just sweet enough that it takes that DRY taste out of it. I got the strawberry and the blueberry kind. I am in love!! Kelly

I haven't had a fill since January and I still feel restricted. I cannot tolerate any meat, processed meat, fish or any bread product whatsoever. I am down to 157 but I haven't lost even a pound in an entire month! I do not eat sugary Desserts either. I can pretty much eat fruit, vegetables, yogurt, Beans, eggs and sometimes salads. Some days I cannot eat until noon! So....my question is this. Exactly how many calories am I supposed to be consuming now? I'm not eating junk food, sodas, coffee drinks, etc so how come I'm not loosing! Yes, I exercise. I'm still restricted - even cottage cheese is hard to swallow sometimes! Anyone got an idea for me?? Thanks!!

I had my surgery on 7/1, I am eating about 1/2 -3/4 of food a day. Plus getting between 60 and 80 grams of Protein per day. Here is what I usually eat. 1 greek yogurt/ 1/2 cream of cream of wheat 1 glass of V8 lunch egg drop Soup dinner 3oz of grilled grouper (mushy) 1 tomato slice (no skin just the center ( chewed until mushy consistency) pinch of feta cheese Last night I was starving so I had about 1/2 c of refried Beans with a pinch of cheese, 1 t of guacamole. My calories range between 600-800 per day. There is a list of mushy foods that really helped me at the grocery store. What I am worried about am I eating too much.. I feel no restriction at all, I am finally feeling what a lot of people on here are feeling. I eat when I am satisfied and not to full. I was so worried about everything and my doctor told me " stop worrying and live you life" So that is what I have been doing. I have stopped the Protein drinks (I know a bad idea, but I am still getting the protein I need daily.) My question is do you think I should be doing anything different? Or is there any suggestions? I still have had no bread, Pasta, crackers anything crunchy, no sweets, and no potatoes. Like I am not a schedule person. So like it is 5pm and I have eaten cream of wheat and a cheese stick. Of course Water. I have been only been eating when hungry. Thanks in advance!!
