How Long To Start Losing Weight After Surgery?
MoonSiren replied to enixon2010's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Don't worry! It will come off of you but I hear there is a 3 week stall. I didn't have that problem myself. The only reason you lose weight is your body is burning more calories than you are consuming. -
I did at least 80 g protein a day, about 800-900 calories and I needed carbs, so 75-80 g carbs. I got them in a higher carb shake or in my snacks between meals or just with careful meal planning. This worked for me. I was a very slow loser. Six pounds a month on average, losing only two weeks a month, no matter what I did. A couple 3 week stalls, a 6 week and a 9 week. To get through stalls I just pushed forward, making sure not to graze. I was big on water, using flavor drops or fruit to flavor. It's important. I'm awful about exercise. I moved more, still do. I take stairs, I'm active. I had periods of strength training. But overall, I'm an awful role model when it comes to fitness. Good luck. Keep plugging away. Sometimes our bodies fight us on those last pounds, but they will come off if we're dedicated. Cheri

@@thbrown223 I had the infamous 3 week stall that lasted 2 weeks and then again at 3 months. I have had so many that I cannot even count. The longest one was at 8 months and lasted 5 weeks. When I say a stall, I mean NO weight lost at all during that period of time. If I lost a pound it was not a stall. There are also times when you will lose a pound then gain it back then lose it again. It is simply part of the process that we go through. During that 5 week stall I actually had to stay off the scale because it actually frustrated me. Normally I don't let the scale dictate how I feel but that time I will admit I was very frustrated. Then all of a sudden wham I will drop weight again. I stall out now after I drop 10lbs. Then I go back and forth and it all begins again.

whenever I have a good wt. loss I seem to stall a week as my body catches up. the 3 week stall was the worse. but I kept doing what I was doing knowing I was eating correctly and than the stall broke and I had a nice wt. loss. my doctor reminds me that if I have a stall for any length of time to look for hidden calories that I might be eating and not counting it enough. like in serving sizes etc. just remember basics and you will be fine

So depressed, I almost cried in Dr's office.
KristenLe replied to frozengrapes's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@@frozengrapes Try not to get discouraged. This is the time for the 3 week stall. It's important to meet your protein and fluid goals (not just close) and the scale will move. Your body is adjusting. I hope your Dr explained that and told you to stay off the scale. -
stall accompanied by constipation, is this normal?
crazyplantlady posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello! I'm gonna go ahead and start out by saying yes I know stalls happen and yes I should embrace it and be patient and stick with my program etc etc etc I'm not here to complain about it, I'm here to ask if this is normal. I am 3.5 months post-op, and have been in a stall for the last couple of weeks or so. The scale has literally not moved one bit. The last few days I have had some constipation as well, even though I have been getting all my Protein in, as well as my Water. Before this I was pretty regular. I would be able to poop every morning, whether or not it was a satisfactory poop is a different story I can't help but wonder if the random constipation is related to the stall, and if anyone else experienced this as well? Oddly enough, I did not really experience much of a 3 week stall... so I guess this is my turn! -
Why? It was placed in the "Rants and Raves" forum. If someone doesn't want to read through 7 pages (and counting) of posts, they don't have to. It is refreshing as compared to reading about "Is a 3 week stall normal", "Can I eat solid foods at 2 weeks" or any similar posts 2 or 3 hundred times. That info is already there if someone searched for it, but I am glad people post those questions. If someone doesn't want to read that for the 201st or 301st time, they don't have to.

Weight has slightly creeped up, whats up?
Daydra replied to robocop12's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The 3 week stall.....If you just had surgery and your weight loss has already stalled, read THIS I lifted this link from Butterthebean's signature (thanks for the lend!) If the link doesn't work, look for one of his posts and it's there. I think you're right on the BMR calc. That lines up pretty close to where I'm usually at, and I wear a Bodymedia Fit, so I know how many calories I've burned each day. I don't believe that you have been on a very low calorie diet long enough to have had any major effect on your metabolism, though, our bodies do learn to do the work we ask it to do as efficiently as possible (with the least calorie expenditure). This is one of my biggest fears. I don't want to get down to goal weight and be forced into a 900 cal/day diet for the rest of my life to prevent gain. I want to be able to be healthy, train, and race, and not being a small girl, that's gonna take calories to provide the kind of energy I will need. All that being said, sometimes the math takes a hiatus and doesn't line up for periods of time. I've been running an average of 1800cal daily deficit and over the last 10 days, I've only lost about 2 pounds, but according to the math, it should have been more like 5. We're going to have periods of time that are like that, but an 8 pound gain? I don't know, but that sounds like there's something else going on. I've never had a problem with sugar either, but most, if not all, of the surgeons recommend eliminating, or severely limiting sugar. I don't intend to go so far as to eliminate it, but I will reduce it significantly. I have to be honest, though. I haven't done a ton of research as to exactly what it does to the body, other than the effects on blood sugar, which can in turn create cravings. The good news about cutting sugar, though, is that many people will go through a short withdrawal phase, and then the cravings disappear, so it's a habit that is *relatively* easy to kick. Also, some people have allergies to sugar. Our bodies response to it might not be noticeable when we are heavy, but might be after surgery and we are trying to squeeze every pound of loss that we can. Yeah, all calories are not equivalent when you consider the different effects the macronutrients play in nutrition, and about a zillion other variables that are only partially understood so far. They're really only all the same if you look at it from a purely physical standpoint and not a biological one. One Calorie provides the energy released from food that is equivalent to the energy required to increase the temperature of 1 kilogram of Water by 1 degree at 1 atmosphere of pressure. Doesn't really tell you a lot about how it interacts with the body... Yikes... going too far again... I think the most important thing for you to figure out is exactly what's causing you to gravitate toward selecting the sugary drinks instead of what you know to be healthier options. If you can address that part of the equation, you've got half the battle licked right there. Good luck! Keep working toward the goal! -

2 Weeks out and Suddenly nauseous - CANT STAND LIQUIDS!
sasicas replied to erinawol's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Most people stall around 3 weeks, just do a search of 3 week stall and you will be amazed at how many posts there are. Also dehydration can make you feel extremely nauseous so you might need to get rehydrated by iv, many people deal with that too. Personally I don't think you need to worry so much about the protein shakes, get in what you can, try adding protein to jello or pudding too to get some additional protein in but your body will be fine. I have not been able to tolerate protein drinks since surgery and I did liquids for 2 weeks pre-op and about 7 weeks post op due to complications yet my labs at 3 months were fine. The MOST important thing is staying hydrated. Try different temps of water, some deal better with hot, some with cold, some with room temp, also many people use CrystalLite (sp?) to change it up some. -
I need to vent...4 weeks out and very stalled
Babbs replied to LisaLou30's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It's so frustrating, isn't it? I was expecting one the first few weeks because I had read so much about "The Dreaded 3 Week Stall". What I WASN'T expecting were several more after that, including a long ugly one I'm in the middle of right now. If you are following your program, drinking lots if water, and getting some exercise, it will pass. Doesn't make it any less infuriating though, does it?? -
My first stall started after 4.5 weeks, and my worst one started after about 2 months and lasted 3 weeks. Stalls happen to everyone. Telling you that probably won't erase your anxiety though... I remember my really long stall after 2 months was at exactly my lowest adult weight, where I had stalled out for nearly a year when trying to lose weight "normally" in my 20s. All I could think was that I must have reached the lowest I could ever get, so why did I bother to get my insides cut open? But I kept at it, and after losing almost nothing in my 3rd month, I lost 12 lbs in my 4th month. Just keep trucking on! As long as you don't use it as an excuse to ruin your diet, the weight loss will return!

Standing Still almost 2 weeks...weight loss stall
Arts137 replied to Numenow's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Just keep on keeping on!!! You'll see a LOT of discussion of the "3 week stall" -
So I have been stalling lately for 2-3 weeks at a time and only lost 2 pounds in 2 months. Surgery was 4/26 lost 45lbs total. I'm 4 months out and feel I should have lost a lot more. At my 3 month check up they said I was on track but I don't feel like I am. Honestly it's so hard days to even get all my Protein and Water in. I was just wondering if anyone else had long stalls like me. I have only found couple days to 2-3 weeks stalls at the most. Sent from my iPhone

Weight gain 3 weeks post-op?!?
BigTXChris replied to PoohSoup0803's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It's called the 3 week stall search the forum for it several people go through it. It should pass soon. Good luck! -
Yup, staying off the scale will keep your sanity! I of course never follow that plan but have learned not to get all e cited when the scale doesn't move. My longest stall was 28 days and yes, you will have many along the way. In the first week you are still dealing with all the fluids they pumped into your body before surgery. Give it another week and you should see progress. Anyone here of the 3 week stall? Sometimes it comes at 3 weeks, sometimes a week of two later but almost everyone has one. This is your body adjusting. You will have many stalls along the way. I don't call them stalls unless they last longer than a week and I don't lose anything during that week. You have to remember your weight fluctuates all the time, that is why you should weigh at the same time of day and the same circumstances every time you weigh. I weigh first thing in the am right around the same time every morning. Also, don't use the scale as your only barometer for success. You should be considering how you feel, how your clothes fit and measuring as well. Remember, you did not become obese overnight and you will not get thin and healthy overnight either. I personally use my clothing to assess my real progress. Good luck everyone! You are all doing great!

I can understand the uninterest in food as I went through that but set my phone alarm every three hours to eat something and forced myself no matter how small the meal/snack was. Your body has gone through a huge shock and along with that your head has too. Do you have a therapist you can talk to? You don't have your stats showing so I don't know if you are starting from a lower BMI so can't comment about the weight however you are on week three with the infamous 3 week stall. So pack the scales away, keep to the programme and check in another week, hard to do but will stop the head f**ks. Have you spoken to your NUT about starting other foods? Best of luck and congrats on the surgery! Hang on in there, it'll get better

1 month after post op loss
Sassygirl06 replied to FRED1977's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I lost 18 pounds my first month. Then I hit a stall and didn't lose for a month. After that I normally lost about 8-10 pounds a month for the next 6-7 months. Everyone is different, so it is hard to compare, however most people do hit the dreaded 3 week stall, so be mentally prepared for it to come. Good luck to you! I hope your reach all of your goals! -
PCOS seems to slow down the loss, unfortunately. I’m there. In a 3-week stall right now.

How much were you exercising at 4 wks out?
Globetrotter replied to Globetrotter's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
So this is the 3 week stall ... it happens near the 3rd week, and seems to last 3 weeks! Yuck. Well here is what I have available to me: The Gym: treadmill, elliptical, bicycle, free weights. PS - it is 125 degrees here, all day. The Food:boiled chicken, baked fish, canned tuna, deli meats, meatloaf, boiled veggies, manufactured shredded cheese, steak, swissed steak. Everything else is deep fried or pure carb or both. The location: Iraq. US army fob. So I get a to-go box every couple of days and load it up with the likeliest Protein foods, put it in my little refrdgerator, and nibble from it for days. One cup serving of the meatloaf has 33 grams of protein but that's 8 ounces! It would take me 2 and a half hours to eat that. I will admit that I could go to the gym super early in the morning, I really could. Yet every single morning that I wake up at that time, I feel soooo warm and cosy and relaxed in bed that I just don't bring myself to do it. My work day is already 12 hours long at best, doing more than that seems monumental. Plus I was really hoping to lose some weight before hitting the gym, at this size it is painful and laborious to attempt gym work. -
Congrats! You look awesome. And I love your 3 week stall post. It got me through!

I don't know about the 3 week stall, but I had a 4 month stall that went for 15 or 16 days UGH! Chin up you will drop soon!!!
