  1. This is interesting, I had a revision from lap band to RNY on December 6, 2017 and I am waking up the same way. I hadn’t thought nothing about it. [emoji102]

    Lapband To Sleeve Success Stories

Generally if you suffer from severe acid reflux (GERD), RNY gastric bypass is the best choice because the sleeve can make the condition worse. We had one individual in our bariatric surgery support group that had a revision from lap-band to gastric bypass. His band started to wear into his stomach and that was a life threatening condition so he had to have it removed. Generally speaking he was happy with the revision. In his case there was a lot of scar tissue because of the lap band, so when they did the revision, his pouch was smaller than most. This meant that the volume of food he could consume at any time was less than normal. He compensated by eating more meals per day and he was fine with that.
  3. I had my band year ago probably 8 and my revision on Oct 9th this year, the band never really worked until I started to have partial esophageal paralysis. Once that happened I was fast tracked for the removal and revision. I am on week 10 and down 58 pounds more than I ever lost with the band and the only thing that has caused an issue was the pain on my left side it would hit mostly at night for the first 5 or so nights it was pretty damn bad and I would have to take my pain med to sleep. After that it has been pretty smooth sailing. Good luck

    Gastric Bypass Surgery Monday! Nervous

Had my revision from lap band to Bypass yesterday December 18. Now I’m headed home.

    Severe GERD

I just had the sleeve surgery on 11/28 & already have such bad GERD that even with taking 40 mg of protonix & 60 mg of ranitidine I'm still miserable. I'm unable to eat and am LUCKY to get in a protein shake & 20 oz of water. This has been going on for 4 days. I'm seeing my surgeon's PA today so am hoping to figure things out. If nothing improves and my only option is to have a sleeve to bypass revision, what is the surgery/recovery like?
  6. I don't think I've ever heard of a bypass to sleeve revision. I do hear of the other way around (sleeve to bypass), but that's usually because of problems with GERD. And yes - I've heard of bypass to DS, but like the poster above said, it's a very complicated surgery that very few surgeons are trained/qualified to do.

    Hospital discharge today!

Hi all I had my broken gastric band out and revision to RNY on Thursday 16th (4 days ago). Due out of hospital on 23rd, but I am being discharged today as it has gone so well! Why so long? My surgeon only does this by open surgery. Compared to the band, it has been a breeze! Good pain management, and I have had no nausea at all. Lots of sleeping, 1/2 watching tv. Day 2 (Friday) ice chips Day 3 Water, 30ml an hour, and clear broth for dinner Day 4 Water, 60ml an hour in the morning, Apple juice 90ml afternoon. Day 5 1tspn yoghurt for Breakfast, two tsp puréed fish for lunch. Once I go, it is back to liquids for a week, but we all know the purée passes through fine. I feel mighty! (Oh yes - thanks to whoever warned me - once you start passing wind, you are not good to know! Hope that stink subsides quickly, or I will suffocate alone in my wee hotel room!) so now the journey begins...

    Buddies Group - Surgery Dec 4 to 15, 2017

You have been through so much! Whew! !i just realized how to comment on your responses and comments :/! Technology challenges. Sounds Like you have a big heart. Joel O was good today and I reset my thinking and have had a better mindset and day. This is definitely an adjustment and the Lapband revision is why I’ve been so adamant since my removal this past August.. my stomach wasn’t too bad., the longer I wait things are going backwards:(... I am a low BMI 30 ... now Feeling Good and healthy .. physicaly and mentally are our common threads .. not everyone gets the challenges and low or high BMI ers shouldn’t judge.. just support each other through this journey .. My hopes for you and all of us to hear the good bad and kindness we all need. I am a bit nervous band to sleeve.. I followed the program on the sleeve but this seems scary that it is permanently even though I was in the lapband for the long haul. I didn’t want it out! I didn’t know you get staples removed ??? My preop is three days liquid .. one clear. Starting now the dates changed to 28.. so I’ll enjoy the holidays a little bit .. Some food and drinks wise ., definitely am not over doing it! Not worth it .. i wonderif this is very different than the Lapband? A good decision? My husband thinks just stay as I am .. why take this risk..? Is there a lot of pain? Do you ever feel normal again.. I’ve lived with the band for 6 years and didn’t mind it must if the time. Well keep us all in the loop on your recovery. Thank you!
  9. I havent had it done personally, but ive been in on many sleeve to bypass revisions. And honestly its not much different than somebody having a bypass for the first time. With a sleeve basically part of the bypass is already done, so it should in theory be easier for a surgeon to do a bypass on a patiet with a preexisting sleeve. The fact that youre so lean should probably make it even easier. I on the other hand dont know much about the strictures and stenosis and cant help you there. But I would imagine your experience will be very similar to anyone having a bypass, with the exception that youre gonna get a lot of confused looks because youre pretty lean

    Revision sleeve to bypass

My insurance covers revision as long as it's medically necessary. So like the other gal said if you can prove that it's medically necessary to cure your GERD it won't matter what your BMI is because they'll look at it as a procedure not a weight loss surgery. I'm getting a revision to the bypass because of complications from my sleeve. They approved it in less than a day. And I'm only 167 pounds Sent from my SM-N950U using BariatricPal mobile app

    Gastric Bypass Surgery Monday! Nervous

My surgery is Monday too.. I'm a revision from sleeve to bypass due to some complications I had from my vsg I in July. I'm scheduled for 7:30 Monday morning. Good luck to you! I hear the recoveries are similar so I can tell you that the first couple of days are kind of hard because you can't drink, and you're in pain from the gas pain in your chest so just take a hot pad and make sure you relax and use your pain medicine Sent from my SM-N950U using BariatricPal mobile app
  12. I'm looking for some information on those who have had a revision from sleeve to bypass. I'm 5 months post-op from my vsg surgery and my stomach has severe stenosis and two strictures along with gastroparesis. They are unable to treat it with dilation so I'm going in on Monday to have a revision. I just don't know what to expect. Is there anyone out there with any advice? 13. It does happen, with any of the WLS procedures, though with somewhat differing rates. Revising from the bypass to the sleeve is possible (talk to your surgeon!) though the results are unlikely to be all that good as they are both similar in their overall power. As with most revisions, the second surgery tends to yield less, and slower, loss. The key to any of them is to understand why the weight has come back and get a handle on that, as one can eat around any of these procedures. There are some bypass specific procedures that are sometimes done in an attempt to correct some problems - band over bypass or different stoma tightening techniques, but they overall don't seem to have a very good success record. The best approach that I have seen is to revise it to a duodenal switch, as that procedure offers better regain resistance than the others, but that's a very complex procedure for which only a very few surgeons are qualified (like maybe half a dozen or so). From what I have seen over the years, is that 30 lb or so regain is fairly easily lost again over some months by getting back to dietary basics and cutting out whatever junk has crept back into the diet. 50lb regain or so seems to be more of a 50/50 thing as to whether one can pull it back with diet or have to revise.
  14. Also, the following link takes you to a YouTube vlog made by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Michigan, who mentions the '1 golden shot' nature of revisional surgery. http://drmatthewweiner.com/bariatric-surgery-revisions-will-they-help-or-not/

    Revision sleeve to bypass

I am not an expert with insurance requirements. I suspect they might resist approval unless there is an underlying condition that needs to be corrected by revision. In your case the condition might be constant heartburn. This condition might be GERD. The sleeve will generally make this condition worse and that may be the logic for a revision.
  16. Never thought that I would be staring over but here I am. I had the gastric sleeve, hiatal hernia repair and gallbladder removal done in January 2013. Got down to 159 from 225 (I'm 5'3.5"). I never hit goal of 140. Fast forward to 2015, I started to slowly gain weight, and then I got pregnant and gain more weight. As of today, I'm up to 210. I am considering a revision to the ds or rny. I'm dealing with issues such as: pcos, prediabetic, constant heartburn, back and hip pain, decrease in energy, etc. I just want a better quality of life. I have my first NUT appointment and psychological evaluation on 1/11. Who has had a revision with a low bmi? What was your process like? Was you able to be approved through insurance? Lapband Complication-Needs Removed

I’m a band to SIPS DS revision (8/8/17) I did not have Barrett’s but I was getting terrible reflux with my band. I was also getting stuck on water! I’m so glad to have my torture band removed. It is so nice eating solid food without struggle. I had also gained all my weight back plus some. Since my revision though, I’ve passed my lowest band weight. And definitely couldn’t be happier. Good luck, I hope your next journey goes smoothly!

    Disappearing lapbanders

I have been doing a lot of research; it seems that their is a recent publication by The Journal of the American Medical Association ("JAMA") discouraging lap band surgery, but is in favor of the "sleeve". I've read the article several times, but still didn't really agree with their stance. My lap band DID slip in May 2016 and I had to have a "revision" surgery to put my lap band back in place. Honestly, I don't have any regrets about the surgery and I would certainly do it again. Good luck to you "newbies" ***smiles***
  20. Wow that's amazing! Yeah I'm already fighting weight gain but it's so hard because since I no where have no fluid in my band everything goes through and I'm hungry all the time!! I have to control myself...especiallly since I'm able to eat EVERYTHING with no restriction. I just want this out and revised to be 100% on track with my weight loss goals. Being hungry all the time I still terrible! I really hope I have similar success as you have had!!!

    December Surgery Dates

I am scheduled for revision from Band to Bypass on December 18th. I need to be at the hospital at 9am.
  22. I had my band to sleeve revision in two stages, 3 months apart. I did gain a little weight between the surgeries -- about 5lbs. You do need to keep an eye on things, especially after years and years of not being able to eat normal food (hello, bread and veggies) but gaining weight isn't inevitable. in retrospect, i was really glad to have the 3 month period between surgeries to really get my head in the game for the sleeve surgery. it is harder for revision patients to lose weight with the sleeve (not impossible, just harder due to our pouch usually being slighly bigger than a virgin sleever due to scar tissue). use the time to start and exercise routine, learn to meal prep and track what you are eating, etc. for context: i lost around 60lbs (ended up around 175) with the band and gained it all back within a year. from year 1 until year 9, i gained another 35lbs. i'm just shy of 9 months post-op with the sleeve, down just shy of 130 lbs and within 6lbs of my goal. My BMI this AM was 25.1 -- just .1% until I hit a "normal" weight.

    Buddies Group - Surgery Dec 4 to 15, 2017

Thanks for your input.. I have been going back and forth. You have a good point. I don’t have family here so that will be easier. Just don’t want to bail .Are you or .. Anyone a revision to Lapband ?
  24. Hi, I am from Australia and had a sleeve done in 2011. I then had revision surgery in June and had the SADI or I am guessing the “mini bypass” it’s the loop but with only one join if that makes sense? Anyhow, it is very new here and I was only the 3rd patient my surgeon had performed this particular surgery on. I have healed well and lost weight but I am struggling with constant bloating, excessive gas and abdominal pain. Has anyone else had this problem? I have tried somac plus degas medications, ibs medication etc but it just keeps reoccurring. Help, I have just started dating again and this is going to be an issue so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks 🙏

    #2 after Loop DS

I was revised from the Lap-Band to the traditional DS on June 9, 2017, and so far I've lost 57 pounds. As long as I keep my calories to around 1100 a day and make protein a priority, I lose. So far, I haven't had a stall, although my weight loss has been slow at about 1.5 pounds a week. I know other DS patients have lost up to 3-4 pounds a week, but that hasn't been my story. You are only a few weeks post-op, so your body is getting used to all of the changes. Give it time. Log your food. Drink lots of water. The malabsorption component of the DS is very powerful, so I am confident in time your losing will pick up. I log my food on My Fitness Pal and it helps me to keep my eating in check.
